EK On the Go

Drift through alleyways, inlets and ancestral memory with Deena Taylor—Navy veteran, podcast host and lifelong Bremerton resident—as she unveils the hidden stories shaping this salt-stained corner of the Pacific Northwest. Deena, creator of Bremelore, peels back the layers of a maritime town sculpted by shipyards, superstition and the deep pull of Puget Sound. With wit and reverence, she conjures the ghosts, rumors and quiet legends that give Bremerton its soul—challenging what outsiders think they know. In this episode of Power of Place, we journey from childhood bowling alleys and Navy base neighborhoods to shadowy tunnels beneath the city—some mythical, some real. Deena shares chilling tales passed down by her Irish grandmother and introduces us to “Shrimpy,” a long-forgotten cryptid uncovered in a vintage science fiction zine. She even recounts the true story of a man who raised a lion in his backyard. We also meet iconic figures who passed through this unlikely harbor—Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood, music legend Quincy Jones and even L. Ron Hubbard, whose brief stint in Bremerton left strange echoes of its own. Part hometown love letter, part ghost-lit walking tour, and part invitation to look again—this episode reveals how the most meaningful places are often the most misunderstood. "I always felt slightly out of place in all of my travels. I did not feel like I belonged on that beach in San Diego. I did not feel like I belonged in the city in Washington DC. The place where I felt like I belonged was…where I get to go home and see my family. And that was truly where I felt like I belonged." ~Deena Taylor

Fast forward a few decades and Drew's son Arlo asked "Bear King" (the name he calls Bob) to tell him a "wind story." That prompted Bob to create this podcast series, drawing on the arc of the adventure books he loved as a kid and continuing the tradition of naming characters loosely on children's names. Grandsons Arlo is "Loar" and Oren is "Roen." Grandnieces Aurora, Delaney and Allessandra are featured, too. They visit neighborhoods where family members live. Before he retired from the TriMet transit agency, Bob oversaw the architectural design of the Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People over the Willamette River. He also managed the agency's alternative energy projects. Today, Bob lives in a Portland high-rise "sky cave" condo tower by the river, bridge and Ross Island. Mother Love Bone has legendary status amongst grunge fans. The band was formed in Seattle from another legendary early grunge band, Green River. The band was led by charismatic frontman and main songwriter, Andrew Wood. Guitarist Stone Gossard of Green River and latter Pearl Jam on rhythm and lead guitar and Bruce Fairweather on lead and rhythm guitar as well. Jeff Ament previously of Green River and later of Pearl Jam fame on bass and Greg Gilmore on drums. The album was a mixture of alt rock, glam metal and future grunge. Hard hitting lyrics which also showed a lighter and more fun side of the "Seattle Sound." Mother Love Bone was one of the earliest Seattle bands to be destined for greatness with their debut album coming on a major label. However, Andrew Wood's death from heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 was tragic end of this upcoming band. The album was released a few months later on July 19, 1990. A tribute album/band, Temple Of The Dog further created the legend of Mother Love Bone as did the breakout of Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. 1992 - June: Rage Against the Machine "Rage Against the Machine"

What the Riff?!?

Rage Against the Machine recorded their eponymously named debut album in May-June of 1992 and released it in November 1992.  The Los Angeles-based group consisted of Zack de la Rocha on vocals, Tom Morello on guitar, Tim Commerford on bass, and Brad Wilk on drums.  The group was known for their anti-establishment and politically charged lyrics.  Rage Against the Machine combined a lot of genres of music into a single hard-hitting sound.  The influence of hard rock and metal is clear, and elements of rap, funk, hip hop, and punk rock are clearly infused into the sound. This group was not just political in nature, every song is laced with revolutionary rants.  The group draws inspiration from mondern revolutionary groups such as the IRA and the Black Panthers, and is highly critical of the policies of the United States, both foreign and domestic.  RATM's debut album is largely based on their demo tape released a year before, which contained seven of the ten songs appearing on the album.  That demo tape was recorded prior to the group's first live show, and was used as a means to build awareness of the group in the days before their signing with Epic Records. The album was a quick critical success and a slower commercial success.  The group began to really take off on the strength of the single "Killing In the Name," and after their performance at the Lollapaloosa festival in mid 1993.Lynch brings us this high energy album in this week's podcast. BombtrackThe opening track starts with a strong guitar riff, and deals with themes of social injustice and resistance against oppression.    Bullet In the HeadMedia manipulation and control of information are the issues dealt with in this track, which became a staple of the band's live shows.  "Just victims of the in-house drive-by / They say jump, you say how high."Wake UpThis song will be familiar to fans of the 1999 film "The Matrix," as it is used at the conclusion when Neo calls the Matrix announcing he will reveal their existence.  They lyrics are a critique of racism, the CIA and government corruption.Killing In the NameThe big single from the album addresses police brutality and institutional racism.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Face to Face by Siouxie & the Banshees (from the motion picture “”)This movie based on the Stephen King novel starring James Caan and Kathy Bates would win Bates an Oscar for Best Actress. STAFF PICKS:Empress of Pop by Insane JaneWayne starts the staff picks with an underrated local Georgia band.  This song is a screed against Sinead O'Conner.  Insane Jane produced two albums, the first called "Each Finger," and the second (which contains this song) entitled "Green Little Pill."Let's Get Rocked by Def LeppardDuring a time when hard rock was on the downswing, it is nice to hear a solid rocker which would have been at home on any of Def Leppard's 80's albums.  Rob's staff pick shows that there was still some solid rock music going on in the midst of the grunge movement.57 Channels (and Nothin' On) by Bruce SpringsteenBruce features a Springsteen song which reflects the proliferation of cable television, but not necessarily good content on the tube.  While Springsteen considers this sone a bit of a "playful misfire," the song did go to number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Mainstream Rock charts.Would? by Alice In ChainsLynch closes out the staff picks with a song written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.  The lyrics deal with the aftermath of rehab and the uncertainty of the future. NOVELTY TRACK:Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray CyrusLong before his daughter began her career in "Hannah Montana," Billy Ray Cyrus was all over the charts with this cheesy country song. They gained a Billboard 200 top 10 hit in 1993 with their self-titled debut album, released by Maverick Records. An early document of a nascent Seattle scene that would be national news within five years, the comp features several bands that had yet to put out any recorded music, including Melvins, Soundgarden, and Andrew Wood's first band, Malfunkshun, plus tracks from Green River, Skin Yard, and the biggest band in the scene at the time, the U-Men. Kim Thayil of Soundgarden joins the show to talk about how the compilation came about and how this six-band compilation serves as a cultural artifact of the foundation of the Seattle alternative scene. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament are two of the Seattle scene's most foundational musicians from the 80's and 90's. Stone and Jeff started playing together in 1984 as members of Green River, which eventually dissolved, leading singer Mark Arm to form Mudhoney. Later, Jeff played bass and Stone played guitar in Mother Love Bone until their lead singer Andrew Wood died of an overdose just days before their major label debut in March of 1990. Reeling from Andy's death, Jeff and Stone started recording with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell on a side project called Temple Of The Dog that featured vocals from a then unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder. Later that year, Jeff and Stone asked Eddie to join their new band with guitarist Mike McCready. As Pearl Jam, they released their debut album Ten in August of ‘91—the album went 13 times platinum and charted on Billboard for nearly five years. Since then, Pearl Jam have released 11 more albums and built a die-hard fan base thanks in part to their outstanding live shows. Last week they released their latest album, Dark Matter, which was produced by Andrew Watt, who's recently worked with Miley Cyrus, Iggy Pop, Post Malone and Ozzy Osborne. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about how Andrew Watt's encyclopedic knowledge of Pearl Jam helped inspire some of their best performances to date. Stone and Jeff also open up about the inner-workings of their professional relationship, and Stone remembers the first time he met Eddie Vedder, who marked the occasion by passing him a hand-written poem. We are celebrating the adjacencies to a true rock n' roll icon: ALICE COOPER. Not much to say about the man, the myth, the legend. Capn'n Content suggested that we focus our listening to the gunslinger guitarists that have supported the Coop throughout his long career. So, that's what we are doing! Enjoy.New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about an artist that many of you know in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of the side projects that the guitarists who've supported him over his 50+ years have. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Hollywood Vampires - “The Boogieman Surprise” from Rise (2019)Billion Dollar Babies - “Too Young” from Battle Axe (1977)Electric Angels - “Dangerous Drug” from Electric Angels (1990)Lou Reed - “Vicious” from Lou Reed Live (1975)Kane Roberts - “Rock Doll” from Kane Robers (1987)Tokyo Police Club - “Little Sister (feat. People have been interested in wine growing and quality vintages since the Roman times, but as the climate warms, what does this mean for the future of wine growers in the UK (and beyond)?   Andrew Wood, from the Department of Biology, has been studying the records of wine critics, which reveal much more than whether the bottle is a good vintage or not. The vintage can tell scientists what the growing conditions were like for the grapes in a given year – was it hot or cold? Was there flooding or drought? Was light more intense?   As the UK experiences more ‘BBQ summers', we may see new grape varieties flourishing, producing new flavours of wine. But it's not good news for all vineyards. Find out why in our latest podcast!

The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Michael F. He co-authored Crooked Brooklyn: Taking Down Corrupt Judges, Dirty Politicians, Killers and Body Snatchers in Brooklyn. This details some of the more salacious cases of Vecchione's career - including Racist Suspect Michael Mastromarino. This White dentist was a Master Deceiver and mastermind of a body parts smuggling ring. In addition to helping to convict Mastromarino, Vecchione co-authored Behind the Murder Curtain: Special Agent Bruce Sackman Hunts Doctors and Nurses Who Kill Our Veterans. About half of this text is devoted to the infamous Michael Swango. This book focuses on Swango murdering and lying at the New York state veteran's hospital. Swango killed (or tried to kill) a number of patients there - including privileged black male veteran Andrew Wood, who survived the attack. Vecchione told us he thinks many of Swango's victims were classified as black. He also classified the conduct of numerous White health care executives and hospital officials as “lazy” for not properly vetting. Swango. Gus thinks this is equivalent to White people being “ignorant” about the System of White Supremacy. #MasterDeceivers #LicenseToKill #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

This week, the Imbalanced Boys explore the birth and life (so far) of Pearl Jam. They were formed by Seattle stalwarts after the death of Andrew Wood, the singer for Mother Love Bone. The episode includes a brief discussion of Wood's death, as Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament moved on and found an incredible Rock & Roll life. The boys discuss the arrival of Eddie Vedder, and the various drummers who've been in the fold, as part of the overall history of this living legend of a band! Unlike many subjects here on the podcast, this band is still going, at their own pace, in their own way. And we follow... It's always a shock when we hear that a rock star has died...but when the news about Chris Cornell came out on May 18, 2017, it was extra-jarring... The overall impression was that he was a guy who had it good...he'd been a central fixture of the grunge era as the front man of Soundgarden...there was an totally unexpected hit with the Temple of the Dog project...then a solid three-album run with Audioslave... His solo recordings were hit-and-miss, but given everything else he'd done, fans gave him a pass when he stumbled... Then came the Soundgarden reunion, which began in 2010 and ran for almost eight years...there was a new album—“King Animal” in 2012—and sold out tours...there were also plans for a second post-reunion record for which Chris had already recorded some vocal takes... But then he gone by his own hand in that hotel room in Detroit...another member of the grunge brigade, joining Kurt Cobain, Andrew Wood, and Layne Staley...and it's possible that Chris' fate had a fatal effect on his good friend, Chester Bennington, who took his own life two months later... Chris may be gone but we're still talking about him, still listening to his music, still marveling at that voice...as with all great artists, the fascination continues... Let's take a dive into Chris' world with ten interesting things about the man that you may not know... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What the Riff?!?
1993 - July: Candlebox “Candlebox”

What the Riff?!?

Candlebox had a seemingly immediate success with their self-titled debut album in July 1993.  The group had formed in November of 1990, with lead singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado as the founding members.  They performed in clubs around Seattle, a musical mecca at the time that benefitted from the grunge movement, and released an EP that got the attention of the new Maverick Records.  Maverick would sign Candlebox, and the group would be the studio's successful act.  While grunge was still king in Seattle and on the air waves at the time, Candlebox does not neatly fit into that category.  Some of the band's work has a grunge feel, but it tends towards a more mainstream hard rock sound in general.  The debut album Candlebox would peak at number 7 on the Billboard album charts, and would see a number of singles hit both the radio and video charts.  The strength of their songs would land them as openers for Rush and Metallica, and they would be headlining their own tours by the end of 1994.Despite the rapid success, the popularity of Candlebox was a slower burn at the time.  The album did not enter the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart until August of 1994, and initial reviews were mixed.  However, the album would remain on the chart for 104 weeks, and would be certified 4x platinum in the United States.Candlebox would release three albums with Maverick Records before running into disputes, and they disbanded in 2000.  A revised lineup would reappear in 2006, and a new album would be released in 2007.  As of this podcast Candlebox has released seven albums and is still performing today.Rob brings us this debut album for this week's podcast. YouThe second single was inspired by the time that lead singer Kevin Martin gave up drug dependency.  He had seen Midnight Oil in concert and dedicated himself to becoming a rock singer.  The single peaked at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts.  The song in 6/8 time alternates between a heavy rock feel on the chorus and a softer portion in the verses.Don't YouThis song leads off the album, and is a deeper cut that was not released as a single.  It really rocks from the start.  “And I could break your heart down as I tell you that you've burned out.  Don't you?  You want to let it go, yeah - you want to let it go, yeah.”RainAnother deeper cut with a very bluesy feel at the start that continues for several minutes before picking up the pace.  The lyrics are about a woman leaving the singer, and the regret the singer feels at the loss.  About three minutes in, it changes to a more rocking jazz section with a staccato scat meter in the lyrics.Far BehindThe third single would be the big hit from the album.  Their most commercially successful song went to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the Album Rock chart.  It was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, a singer from the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.  The lyrics are written from the perspective of the drug that killed him.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Saturday Night by Ned's Atomic Dustbin (from the motion picture “So I Married an Axe Murderer”)  The Mike Myers dark comedy featured this cover of the Bay City Rollers' song on its soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:Long Day In the Universe by Darling Buds Wayne opens up the staff picks with a deeper cut, and one that also appeared on the soundtrack to “So I Married an Axe Murderer.”  The Darling Buds are from South Wales, forming in 1986 and disbanding in 1993.  Andrew Lewis, the lead singer, tells about a woman that misses her man so much she can't wait for him to come home. Dream All Day by The Posies  Bruce's staff pick is another Seattle band.  This song hit number 4 on the Modern Rocks Chart and number 17 on the Mainstream Rocks chart.  Band members and songwriters Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow wrote this about dreaming of accomplishing things that the singer either can't or won't achieve. Have I Told You Lately by Rod Stewart Rock legend Rod Stewart begins his crooner phase with this cover of the Van Morrison classic from 1989.  Lynch brings this staff pick which hit number 5 on the US and UK charts.  Morrison originally wrote these lyrics inspired by spirituality and religious conviction.   Zooropa by U2Rob reminds us just how big U2 was at the time with his staff pick.   The “Zoo TV Tour” was a huge production, highlighting the commercialism of the time.  “Be a winner, eat to get slimmer.”  This song takes the form of a suite of three movements.  The album of the same name was produced by Brian Eno. COMEDY TRACK:Achy Breaky Song by “Weird” Al Yankovic We close out today's podcast with Weird Al's parody of the Billy Ray Cyrus country hit which was constantly played at the time.
