Jason and Paul welcome artist, activist, and Dead Pioneers vocalist Gregg Deal to the show to discuss how his punk band operates at the intersection of indigenous activism and punk rock. Gregg unapologetically details the blind spots many white Americans have about U.S. history, how the band came together, and what its intentions are on their latest record, Po$t American. I recently sat down with Joseph Arthur — Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, painter, poet, and one of the first artists signed to Peter Gabriel's Real World Records — for what is, without a doubt, one of the most profound conversations I've had on Creative Mood.Over a career spanning more than two decades, Joseph Arthur has released over twenty critically acclaimed albums, earned a Grammy nomination for his work with Peter Gabriel, and collaborated with some of the most respected artists in music, including Ben Harper, Peter Buck of R.E.M., Dhani Harrison, and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam. An early favorite of Brian Eno, who helped launch his career on Real World Records, Joseph has continued to forge deep artistic connections — including a lasting creative relationship with Gabriel — building a body of work that pulses with raw humanity, unfiltered emotion, and an undeniable spiritual force.Introduced years ago to his music through the unforgettable « Honey and the Moon, » I always sensed there was a rare spirit behind the songs — fearless, unfiltered, and deeply alive. When our mutual friend Amélie Chopinet — who booked his current tour — put us in touch, I knew this would be a special meeting.Joseph is, by far, the most soulful and accomplished musician I've had the honor of welcoming to the podcast — a potent blend of artistic mastery, raw honesty, and spiritual depth. In the first half of our conversation, we explore the spiritual and emotional landscape that defines where he stands today: forgiveness, overcoming public and personal trials, dismantling the ego, aging, and finding meaning beyond survival. Joseph opens up with striking vulnerability about being, as he says, "canceled," and the grace and inner work it took to move beyond it without bitterness — with a deeper faith in himself. The second half dives into his music — past, present, and future — including an intimate look at his creative process, his approach to live music and the relentless drive that keeps his art flourishing. This episode is a tribute to the beauty of endurance, truth, and the indestructible fire of real artists. On a more personal note, I have to say: this meeting was a major moment for me — both as an artist and on a human level. Having an artist of Joseph's caliber on Creative Mood is a huge validation for what I'm building with this podcast. But beyond that, the timing felt almost fated. So much of what Joseph shared — spiritually, emotionally, and artistically — resonated deeply with where I am in my own life right now. Our conversation touched on the very struggles, questions, and transformations I'm currently living through, making this exchange feel all the more meaningful and alive.Thank you Joseph for making the time. First, Renée catches up with actress Maggie Baird (aka the mother of Billie Eilish and Finneas) from Support + Feed. If that organization sounds familiar, it's because Support + Feed joined us on the 2024 North American M72 run of shows, spreading the word about their work changing the food equity system through education around a plant-based diet. Next, Renée and Steff enjoy an in-depth chat with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament, who discusses his non-profit organization, Montana Pool Service. On the 58th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, Brad Rusthoven from the Slamfest Podcast, review the 1990 debut album from Mother Love Bone, "Apple." Mother Love Bone has legendary status amongst grunge fans. The band was formed in Seattle from another legendary early grunge band, Green River. The band was led by charismatic frontman and main songwriter, Andrew Wood. Guitarist Stone Gossard of Green River and latter Pearl Jam on rhythm and lead guitar and Bruce Fairweather on lead and rhythm guitar as well. Jeff Ament previously of Green River and later of Pearl Jam fame on bass and Greg Gilmore on drums. The album was a mixture of alt rock, glam metal and future grunge. Hard hitting lyrics which also showed a lighter and more fun side of the "Seattle Sound." Mother Love Bone was one of the earliest Seattle bands to be destined for greatness with their debut album coming on a major label. However, Andrew Wood's death from heroin overdose on March 19, 1990 was tragic end of this upcoming band. The album was released a few months later on July 19, 1990. A tribute album/band, Temple Of The Dog further created the legend of Mother Love Bone as did the breakout of Pearl Jam shortly thereafter. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. "Sunday Morning" previews some of the season's new productions across the country. Since their debut nearly 35 years ago, Pearl Jam has been one of the world's most popular and influential rock groups. They've produced 12 studio albums (including their latest, "Dark Matter"), while also fighting with their label, refusing to make videos, and suing Ticketmaster. In a rare interview, lead singer Eddie Vedder and bassist Jeff Ament talk with correspondent Anthony Mason about success, friendship, creativity, and giving back to their loyal fans. Demi Moore was a troubled member of the "Brat Pack," who overcame esteem issues and became the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, starring in such films as "Indecent Proposal," "Charlie's Angels" and "Striptease." Her latest, "The Substance," is about an aging TV star who finds a sinister potion that can give her a younger, more perfect version of herself, but at a horrifying price. Moore, now 61, talks with correspondent Tracy Smith about how she had suffered to comply with the entertainment industry's toxic expectations of beauty for female actresses; and how today she is trying to focus on what really brings her joy. We're getting you prepped up for Pearl Jam's second North American leg of the Dark Matter tour by once again featuring shows in the locations that they'll be playing. First up is a hometown show for Mr. Jeff Ament as we cover the Missoula show from 1995. This is the beginning of the Vitalogy era and is the send off show before they embarked on a trip through the Pacific Rim. As always with this era, this show is all about Jack Irons leading the charge. His time in the band was still in its infancy, but you can see the direction that the band wanted to go with him. While the brand new Vitalogy songs were squarely in the forefront, it pushed aside songs from Ten that had been extremely popular only three years prior. There's only two songs from Ten in this show (feel free to include State Of Love And Trust from the time period) and the way those songs were attacked was in a way to trying something different to make them feel fresh. Porch was lifted from it's normal closing role to the fifth spot in the set that saw it's typically iconic live solo abridged, Even Flow experimented with a new intro and pieces of the song that strayed from the radio version, and SOLAT is a completely different monster that they did not continue moving forward with. This show also has killer versions of Spin The Black Circle, Immortality and one of three full versions of W.M.A. that Jack has played on. Also, we have a song that's a Live On 4 Legs first at this show! Javier's segment will focus on that incredibly insane version of W.M.A. and we invite one half of the Hallucinogenic Recipe podcast, Patrick Boegel, to break down the circulation of the bootleg tape from this show. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament are two of the Seattle scene's most foundational musicians from the 80's and 90's. Stone and Jeff started playing together in 1984 as members of Green River, which eventually dissolved, leading singer Mark Arm to form Mudhoney. Later, Jeff played bass and Stone played guitar in Mother Love Bone until their lead singer Andrew Wood died of an overdose just days before their major label debut in March of 1990. Reeling from Andy's death, Jeff and Stone started recording with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell on a side project called Temple Of The Dog that featured vocals from a then unknown singer from San Diego named Eddie Vedder. Later that year, Jeff and Stone asked Eddie to join their new band with guitarist Mike McCready. As Pearl Jam, they released their debut album Ten in August of ‘91—the album went 13 times platinum and charted on Billboard for nearly five years. Since then, Pearl Jam have released 11 more albums and built a die-hard fan base thanks in part to their outstanding live shows. Last week they released their latest album, Dark Matter, which was produced by Andrew Watt, who's recently worked with Miley Cyrus, Iggy Pop, Post Malone and Ozzy Osborne. On today's episode Leah Rose talks to Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament about how Andrew Watt's encyclopedic knowledge of Pearl Jam helped inspire some of their best performances to date. Stone and Jeff also open up about the inner-workings of their professional relationship, and Stone remembers the first time he met Eddie Vedder, who marked the occasion by passing him a hand-written poem. Pearl Jam was on a special run as the season turned to spring in March of 1992. They were headlining small club shows in Europe, clicking well together on stage and getting incredible reactions from the crowd who knew the catalog. While we have looked into some of the highly praised Netherlands shows from this run (Den Haag, Utrecht), this episode touches up on a show that is a bit forgotten about from Eindhoven. Being the 20th show on a rigorous touring schedule, being on the road can kind of catch up with you after a while. After canceling a show two days prior to give Ed vocal rest, he came into this show without the normal zip on his fastball. Songs that are usually known for high-octane intensity were a bit laboring on Ed's voice. We'll talk about that, and how the setlist likely needed rearranging to try and capture momentum, but we'll also talk about some of the major issues that they were having with crowds at the time. During this version of Alive, there are multiple moments of commotion - a guys loses his "spectacles" and stage divers are carelessly jumping on and off the stage whilst kicking people in the head and stepping all over the band's gear. We'll focus on a message from an irate Jeff Ament, who had just about enough of the shenanigans happening at the time. Also, we had some new sound bytes revealed from Dark Matter this week! We re-recorded our original opening segment that was about it being a little bit too quiet with a month to go until the release date because we got snippets of both Something Special and Running within the days between our recording schedule. We'll talk about what we hear from those songs, and we'll break down Stone Gossard's interview with Jonathan Cohen for SPIN.com. Universe: “Super Fuzz or Big Muff?”Mudhoney: “Both!”What else would you expect from a band that titled their mischievously visceral '88 debut EP after both pedals (Superfuzz Bigmuff)?Formed in the late '80s by guitarists Mark Arm and Steve Turner after the dissolution of their band Green River (which included future Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam cofounders Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard), Mudhoney long ago solidified themselves as the Seattle scene's big brothers and tightest pack. Through their 11 LPs, five EPs, and six live albums, Mudhoney has routinely diversified and further defined their eccentric brand of raucous, aggressive, unfiltered rock 'n' roll. Possibly more impressive than the band's wide influence and devoted authenticity is the foursome's bond. Drummer Dan Peters and bassist Matt Lukin (also a founding member of the Melvins) were the rhythmic bedrock for Arm and Turner's exploding-M-80 tones since the beginning. (Arm and Turner have been friends since high school and have been playing off each other since then.) But Lukin left the band in 2001 because tour life became too much, and Guy Maddison has been thundering ever since. To see a group's career that's pushing past 35 years and only have one member swap is as inspirational as it is baffling. How?!“We like each other a lot. We get along. We love what we're doing,” remarks Arm. “Why stop, even if no one gives a shit?”Friendship matters to Arm and Turner, but gear isn't a concern unless it points them in one direction—east. More specifically, toward Detroit, Michigan. And even more specifically, to the Stooges. Both namecheck the livewire band and their raw power several times in our Rig Rundown. However, in a 2018 interview with Premier Guitar, they acknowledged regenerating sounds that echo influences from Neil Young and the Byrds to Devo and the Dead Kennedys. But after chasing “I-Wanna-Be-Your-Dog” sizzle, what else leads them to the gear they use? Has that mentality changed since the late '80s?“If you think about the aesthetics of where we come from—garage punk, and punk rock in general—a lot of it was made with cheap gear, and a lot of it was reclaiming gear that guitarists had kind of dismissed as garbage. Like the Mustang. That was my ultimate guitar back when I was a kid, but it was poo-pooed when I finally got one. I could get them for $150. The Danelectro and Silvertone amps were kind of high-rated garbage when we were getting into them. We based a lot of our sound on cheap gear, so it makes sense to me that I still buy the cheap gear,” concluded Turner. They're still pragmatic about their setups, preferring equipment that's familiar and reliable. Where they chase the dragon is in stompboxes. Turner trusts the Big Muff (his favorite iteration is from the mid-'80s), while Arm's torrid tone burns with a Super Fuzz clone. However, both have additional hot-sauce stompboxes and other effects on their pedalboards that are being auditioned trial by fire.Hours before Mudhoney's headlining set at Nashville's Basement East, Arm and Turner brought PG's Chris Kies onstage to catalog their setups. Turner started the party by talking about a pair of guitars—his battle-tested late-'60s Guild Starfire IV and a recently-acquired Fender Gold...

For the 35th anniversary of Mudhoney's first 12-inch record, SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Mark Arm met Steve Turner at a show in Seattle, they became fast friends and began playing in multiple bands together. They started Green River with Jeff Ament and Alex Shumway and eventually added Stone Gossard on second guitar. Tensions over the musical direction of the band eventually caused Green River to dissolve with Ament and Gossard going on to form Mother Love Bone and Arm and Turner deciding to form Mudhoney. With Mudhoney, they had a vision for fuzz drenched guitars and blending 60s garage with punk rock. They eventually added Dan Peters on drums and Matt Lukin on bass and had their first practice on New Year's Day in 1988. Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop offered to pay for some studio time with Jack Endino so he could hear the material they were working on. From those sessions, they released the "Touch Me I'm Sick" single in the summer of 1988. At that point, they went back into the studio with Jack Endino to work on the songs that would become SUPERFUZZ BIGMUFF. In this episode, Mark Arm describes his approach of “vocalizing” rather than singing, and how playing guitar with this band changed how he thought about song arrangements. Steve Turner talks about his discovery of vintage fuzz boxes and how they informed the Mudhoney sound at a time when fuzz pedals were out of fashion. From the early days of Sub Pop to rocking baby blue 60s guitars to Dan Peters' unique drum patterns to Matt Lukin's relief of playing simple songs to Sonic Youth knighting them as the next big thing to a pivotal moment in Seattle music, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

For the next installment of our series looking back at the Diamond selling albums of the 1990s, we're revisiting the 1991 debut album Ten by Pearl Jam. Though it wasn't an immediate smash upon release, Ten built success on the back of singles like "Alive," "Evenflow," and "Jeremy" with heavy support from radio and MTV. Though the band pulled the plug on videos from then until their 1998 album Yield, demand for the band didn't diminish, as the follow-up Vs. became one of the bestselling debut weeks in music history. But Pearl Jam was not without their detractors, criticizing everything from Eddie Vedder's singing style to album production choices, lyrical content, their credibility as "Seattle band," dismissed as nothing more than classic rock, and more. Much has been said and written over the two-plus decades since its release, so is there really much more to explore? Yes, there is. Like, was Jeff Ament's bass playing the secret sauce that drove the Pearl Jam engine? Is the derided reverb-tinged production actually what makes the album special? And in the world of Gen Z and Alpha sporting Nirvana t-shirts, is Pearl Jam relevant to anyone under forty? Or have they become the new Grateful Dead?   Songs In This Episode Intro - Evenflow 28:49 - Once 38:35 - Yellow Ledbetter 45:07 - Footsteps 45:47 - Times of Trouble (Temple Of The Dog) 55:18 - Alive 1:14:59 - Black (Live, Dissident Single) Outro - Release   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. This episode has been a long time coming. On its 10th anniversary, we are covering an absolute classic Pearl Jam show from Hartford, Connecticut in 2013. Randy has talked a lot about this show in the past, and this episode will be a platform for him to share his memories of his experience, and perhaps get up on a soapbox a little bit. This show is living proof that this small city in Connecticut is one of the best Pearl Jam crowds you can find. We'll talk about that extensively throughout the episode, but what you'll witness is every time the crowd cheers, Ed is completely beside himself. One massive standing ovation after Last Exit perfectly set the tone for what this night would end up being. While the crowd certainly is the #1 theme, it does share the #1 spot with the other important theme from this show. Less than a year after the fatal tragedy happened at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, CT, this was Ed's first moment to be able to react publicly to what had took place. After meeting with fathers of kids who were killed earlier that day, he gave an impassioned speech standing up for gun control and pleading the crowd to continue being loud about it. Songs like Long Road and Come Back reflect the mood of this theme. Another theme that derives from Hartford shows is over one song that has connected the band to the city since 2010. What was once an OTOTO (one time, one time only) performance was now being brought back for a second time - the Van Halen rocker Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. This song will set up a bit of a contentious discussion in this episode about the idea of them playing it. On one side you'll hear praise for the band giving this city some special love for making it a theme, on the other side you'll notice pushback for covering a band they have no business covering. And if you enjoy that conversation, you'll probably love the segue into Got Some as well. Gear Guru segments this week will focus on Lighting Bolt era songs Let The Records Play and Yellow Moon, as well as a little Jeff Ament talk focusing on his fretless bass from Alone. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys who've been friends a long time, but recently formed a new project together. Oh, and one of them happens to be the bassist in a little band called Pearl Jam: It's Jeff Ament and John Wicks. Now Jeff Ament you've surely heard of, since he's a founding member of one of rock's biggest and most reliable acts, Pearl Jam, who've been going strong and steady since the early 1990s. That band released their latest album, Gigaton, right when the pandemic first hit us, so it scuttled some touring plans, but Pearl Jam is back out on the road this fall. Ament has always been a musical seeker beyond his main gig, though, experimenting both with solo records and side projects over the years. He's also an accomplished visual artist. Not only is Ament the hand behind Pearl Jam's iconic stickman logo, but he's also an incredible painter and poster artist. John Wicks is an accomplished drummer probably best known as a founding member of the band Fitz & The Tantrums, though he's also loaned his skills to the likes of Bruno Mars and Cee Lo Green. He teamed up with his old friend Ament to make the music for a TV series called Under the Banner of Heaven, and then the pandemic allowed them time to start an entirely new project that they've dubbed Deaf Charlie. Their debut album under the name is called Catastrophic Metamorphic, and it's a weird, fun, occasionally dark set of psychedelic pop that's also fully engaging. Ament sings lead on most of the songs, which is new for him. Check out “We are Doing It” right here. The chat you're about to hear took place the day after Deaf Charlie's first rehearsal as a full band; even though Wicks and Ament never really intended to play these songs live, plans changed and they'll be making their live debut at the Ohana Festival in early October. Both of these guys live in Montana now, and they chat about Ament's upbringing in small town Big Sandy, Wicks' recent job as a professor at the University of Montana, how originality is often discovered through mistakes, and the unparalleled joy of finding yourself inside the music—or other art—that you're making. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Jeff Ament and John Wicks for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. Jeff Ament plays bass in Pearl Jam and is a founding member of the band. He's also been an avid skateboarding since he was a teenager. He's self-financed the construction of over 27 skate parks across his home state of Montana. It's a source of immense gratification for him, and he often visits these parks in person to sweep the concrete, skate with the kids, and witness firsthand the impact that he's made. This week we sit down to chat about his new band Deaf Charlie, his experience traveling with Pearl Jam vs a side project, and why he's going on a 1200 mile skateboarding mission with kids that he met at one of his skateparks. Plus, find out who Jeff gives his Plug of The Week to. Have any comments, feedback or suggestions for upcoming guests? We'd love to hear from you. Continuing onward with our big summer series, this episode focuses on the second night of Pearl Jam's Mansfield Experiment. With the first night under their belt and the crowd coming into the show aware of the premise, the excitement was at an all-time high. While night 1 was a great introduction to the idea, this show's crowd is up for all of the surprises and answers when called upon for the big call and response moments. While there may be no acoustic set like night 3, the energy at this show was palpable, even though Ed came off a bit grumpy due to a lack of sleep the night prior. Although there were a few rarities spliced in to the night before, this show featured a few songs that you almost never heard at Pearl Jam shows during that era. The most eye opening one was Low Light. Of course Low Light has become a common staple of Pearl Jam sets in recent history, but coming into this show it had only been played one other time at the 2001 Bridge School show. We'll spend time breaking down how this turned into a classic song over time, and some of the pieces that aren't found in recent versions. Other big performances that we'll dive into are Release, Animal, Insignificance, Love Boat Captain, Rival, Rearviewmirror and amazing crowd responses on both Alive and Baba O'Riley. Once again, thank you to everyone who sent in their stories. We'll read another batch of them in the episode. And our Gear Guru segments will focus on the emergence of Low Light, the 2003 rendition of I Am A Patriot and a Jeff Ament driven Rearviewmirror. Alpine Valley has been a staple of the Pearl Jam touring route going all the way back to Lollapalooza in 1992. In the seven instances in which they've played there, there's no lack of unforgettable shows and unforgettable moments. A few of the shows even have monikers that they go by such as PJ20, when they played there for their 20th anniversary, and the Ice Bowl in 2000 where they played a full show in freezing cold weather. In this episode, we're gonna go back to 25 years ago where they played their first headlining gig in East Troy. To help us tell the story, we've enlisted our Patron Aaron Redmon who requested this show. This was very early in Matt Cameron's tenure with the band, and there are some things that we'll hear out of Matt that show that he was still getting adjusted to being on tour with them. Songs like Do The Evolution and Brain Of J feature a harder edge than we're accustomed to today. This show will feature technical difficulties, botched lyrics and early indications that certain songs were ready to become massive crowd friendly moments. The two big moments to look out for are Black with a highly intense We Belong Together tag and Alive with an improv within the solo. With Alpine Valley being such a historic venue, we asked you to share your favorite moments from seeing shows there, which we'll share during our question of the week segment. And our Gear Guru segments this week will feature Mike's clean guitar sound on Even Flow, well deserved love for Jeff Ament and a tag of Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun at the end of Yellow Ledbetter.
