“We're in this time when the earth is activating this awakening, we're part of the immune system of the earth. So then, what do the kids need to hear? Do they need to hear the battles of the Civil War, the names of the Egyptian pharaohs, the capitals of the States? Or do they need to hear that they're magical beings, threaded to a living earth? That's what they need to hear everyday from us adults, and we need to give them the evidence for that.”This week, we are joined by Paul Astin and Jenny Griffiths, the co-founders of Manzanita School & Institute, a nature-based school in Southern California. Founded in 2014, Manzanita challenges educational paradigms and nurtures the whole child through its unique indoor-outdoor curriculum blending rigorous academics, land stewardship (including a working organic farm), and the study of local ecology on its 21-acre campus and the protected lands that surround it. This is an incredibly inspiring conversation that you won't want to miss. Jon, Aidan, and Sarah were all moved to tears on multiple occasions. We discuss the genesis of the school, what they believe the role of teachers is in helping students at different stages, what the latest research says about the role nature connection plays in education, and how we help students create and reinforce an empowering narrative about themselves and the role they have to play as members of our society and stewards of the earth.About Paul & JennyDr. Paul Astin, Ed.D. and Jenny Griffiths, M.A., are longtime educators and Topangans who founded Manzanita in 2014 with the intention to create a new and meaningful alternative to the existing education system—one that honors the unique community and landscape of the Santa Monica Mountains, while preparing students to become independent thinkers and confident, embodied leaders in a rapidly changing world.Dr. Paul has worked in education for over 30 years. He has been a teacher and administrator in both public and private schools, as well as the founder of a health-education nonprofit and a jazz pianist. He has a BA degree in Prehistoric Studies, a bilingual and bicultural teaching credential, an MA in Latin American Studies, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UCLA, where his dissertation focusing on adolescent development and middle school reform won the Dissertation of the Year Award in the Educational Leadership Program.Jenny has a master's degree in Art Education and has taught art and organized community art events for more than two decades. She has also designed and delivered courses for mothers in building mother-daughter groups, a project supporting networks of mentors for adolescent girls. She now oversees the Seeds (K-2) early childhood program at Manzanita. Jenny has also received training in leading council and has been leading our parent council group at Manzanita since 2014. They continue to be inspired and humbled by the Manzanita community, and their dedication to educating the next generation of thoughtful and effective leaders and creators.Learn more about Manzanita School & Institute herehttps://manzanitaschool.org/Visit Living Connection 1st for more information about our work in nature connection and people connection.

The UK's National Parks are designated as the country's leading landscapes but differ from National Parks in other countries in remaining largely in private ownership and having residents living within them. This episode of Inside Out, from Countryside Mobility, explores the enduring appeal and challenges faced by these 'living landscapes'. We travel from one of the most visited, the Lake District, to one of the most undiscovered, Exmoor, also exploring how accesss for visitors is improving. In a two part interview, Dan James from Exmoor National Park Authority shares the inspiration that the Park has brought to many, introduces us to bolving (you'll see Dan as 'The Classic' at 2:29), explains how he works to help a thriving economy in keeping with the landscape and introduces their latest walking initiative - Exmoor Explorer Walks. More information on Photo Trails here.  Julia Walker from Lake District Mobility tells us her personal story of the inspiration behind the charity which is helping locals and visitors to access some of the National Park's most beautiful locations and the progress being made to improve access in Cumbria more generally. She also talks about how they are now helping another National Park, the North York Moors, to offer the same Tramper (all-terrain mobility scooter) hire service. Finally, we travel to the edge of the Cotswolds to discover an initiative encouraging locals and visitors to Return to the Hill. Project Officer, Jenny Griffiths from Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust introduces us to the iconic Robinswood Hill with its panoramic views across the city and countryside and the work she is doing to connect more people to its beauty. “The biggest lie told in tech is that you that you need to be a coder. I think that being able to understand the user experience behind tech, being able to articulate technology, and being able to get other people excited about it, is what you really need to run a good company,” says Jenny Griffiths MBE, founder of Snap Vision. Jenny is the founder and CEO of Snap Vision, a visual search company that works with the biggest names in fashion and publishing. Jenny She has been featured on the World's Top 50 Women in Tech by Forbes lists. She was appointed MBE for Services to Innovation in 2015, and in 2019 was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering's Silver Medal for contributions to UK engineering.   The grass is always greener on the other side. Investors tell technical founders that they’re missing business skills, and non-technical founders that they need tech skills. Snap Vision began as a consumer product, and while the Snap Vision app remains active, the company’s main business is B2B. Entrepreneurs often start consumer products, but pivot to servicing businesses, because digital marketing costs are so high. Jenny took a course in management from London Business School, to help her grow as a leader. Unlike employees, entrepreneurs need to invest in their own learning, because they do not benefit from an employer’s training program.   Check out Snap Vision here and say hi to Jenny on Twitter   To sign up to The 4 Biggest Mistakes Non-Technical Founders Make & How To Avoid Them register here.

Way back when the iPod Touch was (briefly) the cutting edge of mobile technology, Jenny Griffiths spotted an opportunity to use images to search the web. She combined this with a love of fashion to create a pioneering engine which powers searches for high street fashion giants such as ASOS, TopShop and Gap. She started out wanting to be an artist - but became a computer scientist, pioneer of machine learning and computer vision, and was awarded an MBE for her services to digital innovation in the fashion industry. In this episode of Women Tech Charge, Jenny talks to Anne-Marie about her journey to STEM success, and why she's started speaking her mind on the issues that matter.Follow Jenny Griffiths on Twitter @JennySnapTech and @SnapFashionAnne-Marie Imafidon is on twitter @aimafidon and Instagram @notyouraverageamiFor more from the Evening Standard visit www.standard.co.ukOn Twitter: @eveningstandardOn Facebook: https://en-gb.facebook.com/eveningstandard/Ask your smart speaker to 'play the news from the Evening Standard' See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
