Abstract: Visual search models have long emphasised that task-relevant items must be prioritized for optimal performance. While it is known that search efficiency also benefits from active distractor inhibition, the underlying neuronal mechanisms are debated. Here, we used MEG in combination with Rapid Invisible Frequency Tagging (RIFT) to understand the neural correlates of feature-guided visual search. RIFT served as a continuous read-out of the neuronal excitability to the search stimuli and revealed evidence for target boosting and distractor suppression in early visual cortex. These findings were complemented by an increase in occipital alpha power predicting faster responses and higher hit rates, as well as reduced RIFT responses to all stimuli, regardless of their task-relevance. We propose that alpha oscillations in early visual regions implement a blanket inhibition that reduces neuronal excitability to both target and distractor features. As the excitability of neurons encoding the target features is boosted, these neurons overcome the inhibition, facilitating guidance towards task-relevant stimuli. Our results provide novel insights on a mechanism in early visual regions that supports selective attention through inhibition. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.14.548976v1?rss=1 Authors: Bouwkamp, F. G., de Lange, F., Spaak, E. Abstract: The human visual system is equipped to rapidly and implicitly learn and exploit the statistical regularities in our environment. Within visual search, contextual cueing demonstrates how implicit knowledge of scenes can improve search performance. This is commonly interpreted as spatial context in the scenes becoming predictive of the target location, which leads to a more efficient guidance of attention during search. However, what drives this enhanced guidance is unknown. First, it is unclear whether improved attentional guidance is enabled by target enhancement or distractor suppression. Second, it is unknown whether the entire scene (global context) or more local drives this phenomenon. In the present MEG experiment, we leveraged Rapid Invisible Frequency Tagging (RIFT) to answer these two outstanding questions. We found that the improved performance when searching implicitly familiar scenes was accompanied by a stronger neural representation of the target stimulus, at the cost specifically of those distractors directly surrounding the target. Crucially, this biasing of local attentional competition was behaviorally relevant when searching familiar scenes, indicating that it is the local, and not global, spatial context that is modulated, culminating in a search advantage for familiar scenes. Taken together, we conclude that implicitly learned spatial predictive context improves how we search our environment by sharpening the attentional field. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.27.525832v1?rss=1 Authors: Abbaszadeh, M., Panjehpour, A., Alemohammad, S. M. A., Ghavampour, A., Ghazizadeh, A. Abstract: Recent evidence shows that long-term object value association can lead to efficient visual search. However, the neural mechanism of this value pop-out has yet to be understood. Given the known role of the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) in visual search and value memory, we recorded its single-unit activity (n=526) in two macaque monkeys while they engaged in the value-driven search. Monkeys had to determine whether a high-value target was present within a variable number of low-value objects. Interestingly, differential neural firing, as well as gamma-band power, indicated the presence of a target within ~150ms of display onset. This differential activity was negatively correlated with search time and became less display size-dependent for more efficient searches. On the other hand, neural firing and its variability were higher in inefficient searches. These findings reveal the neural code within vlPFC for rapid detection of valuable targets, which can be crucial for animals faced with competition. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.21.521409v1?rss=1 Authors: van Moorselaar, D., Huang, C., Theeuwes, J. Abstract: Although in many cases salient stimuli capture attention involuntarily, it has been proposed recently that under certain conditions the bottom-up signal generated by such stimuli can be proactively suppressed. In support of this signal suppression hypothesis, ERP studies have demonstrated that salient stimuli that do not capture attention elicit a distractor positivity (PD), a putative neural index of suppression. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear that regularities across preceding search episodes have a large influence on attentional selection. Yet to date, studies in support of the signal suppression hypothesis have largely ignored the role of selection history on the processing of distractors. The current study addressed this issue by examining how electrophysiological markers of attentional selection (N2pc) and suppression (PD) elicited by targets and distractors respectively were modulated when the search target randomly varied instead of being fixed across trials. Results showed that while target selection was unaffected by this manipulation, both in terms of manual response times, as well as in terms of the N2pc component, the PD component was reliably attenuated when the target features varied randomly across trials. This result demonstrates that the distractor PD, which is typically considered the marker of selective distractor processing cannot unequivocally be attributed to suppression only, as it also, at least in part, reflects the upweighting of target features. Abstract: The nature of eye movements during visual search has been widely studied in psychology and neuroscience. Virtual reality (VR) paradigms provide an opportunity to test whether computational models of search can predict naturalistic search behavior. However, existing ideal observer models are constrained by strong assumptions about the structure of the world, rendering them impractical for modeling the complexity of environments that can be studied in VR. To address these limitations, we frame naturalistic visual search as a problem of allocating limited cognitive resources, formalized as a meta-level Markov decision process (meta-MDP) over a representation of the environment encoded by a deep neural network. We train reinforcement learning agents to solve the meta-MDP, showing that the agents' optimal policy converges to a classic ideal observer model of search developed for simplified environments. We compare the learned policy with human gaze data from a visual search experiment conducted in VR, finding a qualitative and quantitative correspondence between model predictions and human behavior. Our results suggest that gaze behavior in naturalistic visual search is consistent with rational allocation of limited cognitive resources. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.02.514808v1?rss=1 Authors: Qiu, Z., Xia, H., Becker, S., Hamblin-Frohman, Z., Pegna, A. J. Abstract: It has been repeatedly claimed that emotional faces capture attention readily, and that they are processed without awareness. Yet some observations cast doubt on these assertions. Part of the problem may lie in the experimental paradigms employed. Here, we used a free viewing visual search task and simultaneously recorded electroencephalography and eye-movements. Fixation-related potentials were computed for fearful and neutral facial expressions, and the electrical response compared when participants were aware or unaware of the fixated stimulus. We showed that the P300 increased across repeated fixations on the unseen targets, culminating in a conscious report, likely reflecting evidence accumulation. Awareness of the stimulus was associated with electrical changes emerging at around 130 ms, with emotions of the stimulus being dissociated only after awareness had arisen. These results suggest that the earliest electrical correlate of awareness emerges at around 130 ms in visual search and that emotion processing requires visual awareness. Visual search is just a new way of searching for products on the internet by using an image, rather than the traditional method of typing keywords. For instance, if you saw a new Nike Jordan shoe with a specific colour on a social media platform, but don't know exactly how to describe it in words, you can visual search and find the related matching product by uploading the screenshot. In this case, the visual search saves a lot of time and offers quick results. Visual search has been around for many years and was built into social media and e-commerce platforms like Snapchat and Amazon. But it is gaining popularity now. According to a survey by an artificial intelligence company a few years ago, 62 per cent of Gen Z and millennial consumers sought visual search capabilities more than any other technology. Alphabet chief Sundar Pichai said people are using Google Lens to conduct visual searches more than 8 billion times a month. There are over 600 million visual searches on Pinterest every month. A successful visual search engine requires machines to not only detect, but also recognise specific objects in the image to understand what the customer actually wants, and this is where the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning helps. This technology is mostly employed by e-commerce players to improve the shopping experience of consumers. In India, Flipkart and Meesho have employed visual search technology. For categories such as fashion, jewellery, home decor, and beauty products, images play a key role in influencing decisions and add a lot of convenience for customers. For the last few years, the visual search market has also made big strides in other various fields too such as aviation, forestry, automotive OEMs and electronics. There are also use cases in security screening, baggage scanning and navigation systems. The global visual search market is projected to surpass $14,727 million by 2023, growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 9 per cent.
Citing elusive consensus and possible discrimination against developing economies prompted India to stay out of the trade pillar of the United States-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, or IPEF. Given that India is currently negotiating trade deals with the UK, Canada and EU, is the IPEF decision a step in the wrong direction? Also, what does this mean for India's ambition to become a larger player in global trade? Staying with international trade, India is one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables. But it has long been struggling to ramp-up its exports -- where smaller countries like Thailand are way ahead. India is the world's second largest rice producer followed by China. But last week, the government imposed export duties on various grades of rice. Analysts expect that this protectionist measure will harm the profitability of rice-mill companies in the near-term. However, healthy rice harvest and sound fundamentals are expected to override negative sentiments in the long- haul. Did you know that you can click a photo on any item and search similar products on the web? People are using visual search over 8 billion times a month. Find out more in this episode of the podcast.
