Bonus feature - British wolverines? Our first guest Darren was asked to despatch a troublesome fox in south Wales in 1998. In the snowy conditions he actually saw a puma though his gun sights – he re-lives the high emotions on the winter hillside as bright green eyeshine stared back.  Rick and Darren also consider the prospects of a big cat  being trapped, and they discuss an event in 2011, when the police and the Home Office verified a plaster cast as from a puma-like big cat.For our second guest we return to Exmoor Zoo, meeting owner Danny Reynolds. He briefs us on the new female black leopard, Bagheera. She is a lively three year old, who enjoys playful stalking of the visitors and keepers.Exmoor Zoo also hosts two wolverines, last known in Britain 8,000 years ago, or has this podcast found that they are back somehow?  We discuss some footage which might hold the clues, with some extracted stills on the Big Cat Conversations website. Danny and Rick discuss the traits of wolverines, a big type of mustelid, both in the wild and at the zoo. Words of the week:  talon   &   Gulo gulo26 March 2025

Tonight, we'll read the opening to “Lorna Doone, a Romance of Exmoor”, a novel published in 1869 and written by English author Richard Doodridge Blackmore. Snoozecast first read this one back in 2020. This book is based on a group of historical characters set in the late 17th century. John Ridd is the son of a farmer who is murdered by a member of the Doone clan. The Doone's were once noble but now outlaws. John falls in love with a girl named Lorna who turns out to be from this very clan he loathes.   The backdrop of "Lorna Doone" is the rugged and isolated region of Exmoor in England. This setting plays a crucial role in the novel, influencing the characters' lives and shaping the plot's dramatic events. Blackmore's vivid descriptions of the landscape transport readers to a world of windswept moors, treacherous bogs, and hidden valleys, adding a layer of atmosphere and suspense to the narrative. Lorna Doone is also a brand of rectangular shortbread cookies you may find in the grocery store today. Introduced in 1912, it was possibly named after the main character in tonight's episode, but no record exists as to the exact motivation behind the name. The association with the romantic and adventurous heroine of the classic novel likely added a touch of allure and nostalgia to the cookie brand, which originated from an Irish-American bakery in Chicago, Illinois. read by -V- Learn more about your ad choices.

The Second Sleep by Robert Harris is the choice for this month's Church Times Book Club. On the podcast this week, Susan Gray, who has written this month's Book Club essay, is in conversation with Sarah Meyrick. Robert Harris's dystopian thriller is set in the 15th century, but, although medieval in tone and atmosphere, the date is misleading, as it is set 800 years in the future, because time has been restarted at the year 666. All traces of modern life, such as electricity and decimal currency, have disappeared. And the country is gripped by religious fundamentalism. The story begins with the young priest, Christopher Fairfax, arriving on horseback in a remote village in Exmoor to conduct the funeral of his predecessor, who met a mysterious death. Over the next six days, the young priest's faith is tested as he uncovers the chilling truth. The Second Sleep is published by Cornerstone at £9.99 (Church Times Bookshop £8.99). https://chbookshop.hymnsam.co.uk/books/9781787460966/second-sleep?vc=CT207 Susan Gray writes about the arts and entertainment for The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Times, and the Daily Mail. The Denbigh Moors, or Mynydd Hiraethog, lie in north Wales. At its highest point, it's higher than Exmoor. The moors are a wild, desolate place, home to various types of wildlife. Yet if you believe the tales, they're also a place of ghosts and the Tylwyth Teg. A Roman Centurion apparently stalks the moors, and a ruin slowly disintegrates into the landscape. Welcome to episode 26 of the Nurtured by Nature podcast, today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by the wonderful Helen Neave of Make it Wild.Large Landscape level Rewilding projects are gaining momentum across the UK & Europe, but Make It Wild are taking a slightly different approach, demonstrating Rewilding is possible & scalable for those with less land. Helen's amazing journey provides those of us that care about nature with inspiration & many reasons to be hopeful. We explore how her own concern about the biodiversity crisis, lead to her family deciding they were determined to do something to make a difference. From this humble beginning an incredible ecosystem has evolved encompassing trees, meadows, wetlands & equally importantly local communities, their army of volunteers & numerous other passionate people supporting them in a multitude of ways, that has created an explosion in biodiversity. In just over 10 years, they've demonstrated how nature can bounce back, to the extent 1 of their sites has now been designated a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation. As a beautiful reminder that change doesn't have to be complicated, Helen offers this simple wisdom to guide us all: “Love Nature & She'll Love You Back”!Learn more about Helen & Make It WildHelen, a retired consultant surgeon, has always been passionate about nature. As she & her husband, Chris, learnt more about the challenges facing nature, they decided they must do their bit to help & in 2011 they bought 26 acres as a family project to ‘give back to nature'.  They planted thousands of trees, sowed wild flower seeds, dug ponds & installed habitat boxes. The resulting explosion in biodiversity was stunning and inspired the couple to set up their business ‘Make it Wild' in 2017. With the mission statement “It's not our aim to protect nature, it's our purpose” the business exists to support biodiversity.  Make it Wild now looks after 9 sites in North Yorkshire, UK, totalling over 400 acres, all managed entirely for nature. They've planted 60,000 trees, restored wildflower meadows & wetland, protected ancient woodland, & rewilded uplands, helped by their conservation grazing team of Belted Galloway cows & Exmoor ponies. They offer a range of nature sponsorship and dedication opportunities to businesses and individuals; carbon offsetting through tree planting; woodland wellbeing activities, and an eco-friendly holiday cottage.  In February 2023 Make it Wild were awarded the Sustainability Award in the Hambleton Business Awards, and in September 2023 Helen and Chris were proud and excited to win a BBC Make a Difference Award for their work with Make it Wild.Website: www.makeitwild.co.ukInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/makeitwildukFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/makeitwilderTikTok: @make.it.wildStay at Make It Wild in their eco-friendly holiday cottage: https://www.makeitwild.co.uk/heather-lThank you for being a part of this journey with me, please Subscribe to make sure you don't miss our future episodes, and share with your friends to help these messages ripple out across the world. But that's not all – brace yourselves for some accounts of the supernatural, as we venture into the mysteries that enshroud the Great Western Railway's past. So, whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking a nostalgic journey through picturesque landscapes, hop aboard our railway time machine as we uncover stories that have been preserved along this true country branch line of the old Great Western Railway. All aboard for a captivating expedition into the heart of railway heritage! My Special Guest is Robin Wichard Robin Wichard has worked as a teacher of history for over 30 years and now retired works in various capacities on the West Somerset Railway - Britain's longest preserved heritage railway. He has written a number of books from school resource books to texts on Victorian Photography and Re-living the 1940s. The West Somerset Railway Dating back to its construction, this railway behemoth carved its path through the picturesque countryside, connecting ten unique stations across a twenty-mile scenic journey. The legacy of historic steam locomotives, charming coaches, and steadfast wagons comes alive, echoing tales of an era long past. The intricate architecture of these stations, each a testament to a rich industrial heritage, traverse through the Quantock hills, Exmoor, and idyllic villages nestled in leafy lanes offering glimpses into unspoiled landscapes. Behold the breathtaking vistas of the Bristol Channel and distant South-Wales, with the confident spires of churches and the imposing presence of Dunster Castle. Isambard Brunel At the centre of the Great Western Railway's history is the visionary figure of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. A turning point came when a collective of West Somerset landowners sought Brunel's expertise to transform a concept into reality – the West Somerset Railway, a link connecting Watchet, a historic harbor town, to the region and beyond. The area's wealth of quarries necessitated a means of efficient transportation, and though a railway already existed in the form of the West Somerset Mineral Line, the connection to the Bristol and Exeter Railway was seen as vital. The railway eventually opened in 1862, three years after Brunel's passing. His indelible influence endures in the heritage line that stands today, the longest of its kind in England. In this episode, you will be able to:  1. Uncover some of the history, significance and social impact that the West Somerset Railway had. 2. Explore aspects of life on the railway and in the communities nearby. 3. Discover some of the paranormal reports and ghost lore attached to the line. 4. Examine the role the railway played during WWII and hear more about an upcoming immersive event. As a new King is crowned, Vernon Harwood looks at the role Charles III has played in shaping and supporting farming in the UK. From his first major speech on the environment as a young Prince of Wales in 1970, to his unconventional and often criticised organic farming methods in the 1980s, he continues to be concerned about the future for upland farmers and the profitability of small family businesses. We hear insights from the King's former Farm Manager in Gloucestershire, the Cumberland Bed-and-Breakfast owners who formed a lasting friendship with the monarch and the fifth-generation Exmoor farmer who sees first-hand the impact the Prince's Countryside Fund has on isolated communities. For decades Charles was a passionate and sometimes forthright voice supporting everything from traditional country crafts to Britain's native farm breeds. But with new responsibilities as sovereign, what now for the man dubbed ‘Britain's most famous farmer'? Today we speak with Dale Cunningham, who is the patient and personal man responsible for training the equine portion of the patrol.  Second, we have Officer Emily Herbpst, who rides a mustang and is a small but mighty person who I have the feeling “don't take no guff off a bartender.”  (Thank you, Mr. McMurtry). We got to meet them and their horses Ollie and Maverick at this year's National Western Stock Show in Denver. They were very gracious with their time to speak with us about the horses and Mounted Patrol unit.  One of the most important things that these units do is what we saw them doing in spades at the National Western this year.  They are incredibly effective goodwill ambassadors.  They make the whole idea of the police department approachable.  Young people and old, English speaking or Spanish or German, whether someone is from the city or a rural area – you name it, we saw all types of people come up and hold a hand up to the equine officers for a sniff.  They were thronged.  And with the horses there, people kind of forgot to be so reserved in front of the officers, who were all there in full gear with holstered gun and taser and pepper spray and bullet proof vests.  In many towns, policing used to be more about the guy that keeps an eye on the community, but is a part of the community, walking about doing rounds on patrol.  The officer in small towns often knew not only where you lived, but was likely to take you home to your mother for punishment if you gave him cause.  How did we ever get away from all of that?  It's kind of sad, really.  The police are supposed to be here as members of our communities, but often times all we hear about is the bad stuff. Nicky Button was born in Gloucester and grew up in Worcester. Having a very happy childhood. Nicky was always last to be picked for any teams at school and was the most uncoordinated and non sporty child being told to go and swim after a term of tennis when she still hadn't hit a ball. Her teens and twenties removed around horses and children , whilst she ran a yard starting and schooling young horses and teaching people to ride alongside being a foster mother.  In 2000 with an eight year old daughter she moved to Surrey where she spotted a group of people kayaking on a local canal, she went along to the club and heard only two parts of the sentence, Wednesday nights are adults only, whitewater training and we go to the pub afterwards. Six months later she was staring at her first White water river in Wales. Several swims later and at the end of the river she was hooked.  The kayaking totally changed her life and she soon realised that whilst she certainly wasn't the most proficient, she had found her tribe. Through the kayaking she was invited to help on set on Midsummer Murders and the rest as they say is history, she retrained learning swift water and rope rescue, working at heights and confined spaces, with fire and setting up stunts and rigging. There then followed some incredible years where she felt that she was being paid to have the best time in life.  In 2013 after going away skiing she returned and was unable to see her daughter across the room. Four months later she'd had her driving license removed which knocked onto no job and then no home. Her life felt as though it was falling apart.  She moved to South Devon and stormed along the South West Coast path. A few years on and she was part of walking groups for people with Visual Impairment and encouraging people to get out walking.  On moving to Worcester in 2021 she met an amazing group of strangers who became friends, a trip up Ben Nevis was followed by entering her first Ultra challenge a 50km over Exmoor. When she completed that she looked for her next challenge.  During lockdown she'd dreamed she'd walked from Scotland to Devon, she decided to make this a reality and so Nicky's most marvellous ridiculous adventure was born. On the 13th of March, 2002, something mysterious was found in Exmoor. It had been a chilly, windy, Wednesday morning, when a park ranger began his rounds of the Moorland national park. He soon came across a pile of bin bags that had been thrown close to the road. This wasn't unusual however, as people would often dump rubbish, and sometimes even animal remains along this stretch. The ranger got to his job of clearing up the bags and assumed they were the remains of some kind of pet. After completing his rounds, he proceeded to the Devon and Somerset, Stag Hounds Kennels, where the bones were going to be safely incinerated. Steve our guest has spent half a lifetime investigating big cat reports in southern England – he takes us through key events in Oxfordshire in recent years, including the search for a puma body, the secrets of the Charlbury panther, and a big cat caught in a cage trap which then went missing. We learn about his time volunteering at a big cat sanctuary in Colorado, and hear how he links with his local police contacts. His own sightings include watching a black panther emerge with a friend, who just minutes earlier had mocked Steve's interest in the topic.   Word of the week:   misidentification25 March 2023

Wild bison return to the UK after 6,000 years

In the searing heat of an August day in southeast England, Orsk the bison is grinding his hoof into the ground.A cloud of dust rises to encircle him as he urinates onto the sand, kicks it around a bit and tumbles the floor, rolling around and covering himself in his own scent. His reason is romance. Just meters away in the woods are three female bison, and since their arrival, Orsk has been regularly scenting to advertise himself as a potential suitor. That time, sadly, may never come.Orsk is a habituated bison, and lives in an enclosure in West Blean and Thornton Woods, an 800-hectare forest by Canterbury. Last month, three females were released into the ancient woodland, becoming the first wild bison to roam the UK in over 6,000 years. These wild bison have been brought in as ecosystem engineers, to restore wilderness to a woodland formerly used as a timber plantation. Orsk the bison is grinding his hoof into the ground in a wild area of southeast England. Credit: Richard Kemeny/The World They will thrash around the forest, eating bark and killing trees, eating and dispersing seeds, creating new habitats for other species and generally, transforming a monoculture forest into a rewilded one.“Already, you can see that they are moving through the forest, doing exactly the sort of thing we had been really hoping that they would do,” said Paul Whitfield, director general of the Wildwood Trust. The bison use their huge bulk to fell certain trees with great ease. This creates space for them to move, while also letting in light that will change the consistency of the woodland and provide new habitats for other animals to thrive in.“Where there were literally trees growing right next to each other, there's now quite a wide pathway that they're using on a regular basis,” Whitfield said.  Wild bison have been brought in as ecosystem engineers, to restore wilderness to a woodland formerly used as a timber plantation in southeast England. Credit: Richard Kemeny/The World The dust baths, complete with urine and dung, fertilize and enrich the soil, breathing new life into the ground and helping with the establishment of key funghi populations.Bison also rub their thick fur against trees, which tears the bark of certain trees in a ring. This can eventually kill the trees, yet leaves them upright, creating standing deadwood, an important habitat for a whole range of insects, as well as birds like the lesser-spotted woodpecker.“Probably the best way to describe it is what the bison will do is create food webs,” said Whitfield. “So, they create lots and lots of niches and space for other species to move in.”The hope is that these animals will not only diversify and improve local ecology but transform the woods into a more complex state, able to sequester more carbon from the atmosphere.Aside from helping to mitigate some of the impacts of climate change, the forest should also become more resilient to them, Whitfield explained.“So, in the middle of a hot, dry summer ,you will have a woodland that's far more capable of tolerating drought and disease,” Whitefield said. “And in a wetter, warmer winter, again, it will be able to deal with that better and avoid disease.”The effects of the bison reintroduction is being measured by an extensive monitoring system. The bison are fitted with GPS trackers to show how their movement has changed the local ecology. Drones will fly overhead, mapping changes in vegetation. And a team of dedicated researchers including surveys of animal and plant life, soil quality, and even the bison dung. Last month, three female bison were released into the West Blean and Thornton Woods, an 800-hectare forest by Canterbury, in southeast England.  Credit: Richard Kemeny/The World The bison release comes at a time when the UK is facing a difficult summer, of intense heat waves and now drought. Indeed, the UK is in a poor place both environmentally and ecologically, said Richard Bunting, a spokesman for Rewilding Britain.“If you look at Scotland, for example, a lot of the very beautiful mountains there are actually ecologically poor, they're ecological deserts in many ways because the woodlands that should be there have been destroyed over the centuries.”Only around 1% of the UK is currently being rewilded, explained Bunting, which offers a huge opportunity to expand this conservation strategy.“What it does offer is nature-based solutions to these serious problems and at the moment we're really only scratching the surface of those solutions,” he said. For now, the bison have been released into a fairly small plot of just a few acres.Over time, they will spread throughout the forest to continue their work. The females will soon be joined by a wild bull from Germany, and if all goes to plan, they will breed new genetic lines. Other animals — each with distinct ecological roles — will also join the bison over the coming months and years, including longhorn cattle, iron age pigs, and Exmoor ponies. For Bob Smith, director of the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent, there is a growing recognition that restoring natural woodland would be a robust climate mitigation strategy.“Long term, woodlands with large herbivores across the UK would be one of the best ways to capture carbon. Especially in a way that then meets all the biodiversity targets that we have,” he said.Whitfield says that when it comes to tackling biodiversity loss and climate change, the bison project is just one part of the puzzle. But it's an optimistic one, he stressed, and that is key.“I actually think that is really powerful, and possibly more powerful than what they're actually going to do in the woodlands here,” he said. “It will inspire people to be positive and do stuff, rather than just giving up and being depressed about how awful it all is.”

In last week's episode, I interviewed sister clients, Cheryl and Janine, on how they were able to transition from long-term yo-yo dieters who felt out of control around food to losing weight using the power of habit. This week, I'm excited to share the interview of Unstuffed client, Anne Exmoor, on her unique experience in my group coaching program. As you know, no two dieters are the same and we all have different challenges, backgrounds, habits, lifestyles, and emotional eating struggles. Anne, a vivacious 60-something woman with a fun personality, was kind enough to open up and share some of hers.  Topics discussed: Why Anne, someone who had always refused to pay for weight loss help, decided to join the program and how it turned out to be exactly what she needed to stop bouncing up and down the scale. Anne shares some of her biggest challenges in the program (hint: it's not what you'd think) At what point in the process she witnessed her relationship with food beginning to shift and how she's been able to embrace the timeline and enjoy the process. After 40+ years of dieting, Anne talks about why this process "worked" when others never did. Her best piece of advice for those who fear weight gain if they stop macro/calorie counting, and why confronting this fear is essential for long-term success. Thanks again to Anne for being a lovely guest and sharing her valuable experience. On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we hit you with some cryptozoology and talk about the Beast of Exmoor. This creature has been spotted thousands of times since the 1970s. It gained popularity in 1983 when a farmer lost almost 100 sheep in the course of three months. It got so bad that the British Royal Marines were deployed in “Operation Beastie” to try and kill or find forensic evidence. The descriptions are remarkably similar and seem to be some sort of a great cat that looks to be roughly seven feet long. It is lean and powerful and can easily jump over six foot fences. So what is this creature? An unknown great cat? It could be a freed pet, but it's been there too long for such a creature's lifespan. So what do the experts say? What are the sightings like? How are prey killed? Listen, laugh, learn.
