Interview with Evan Taylor Bernie Worrell Orchestra bandleader. Evan Taylor whose latest production is the posthumous Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse about this release and some of his other diverse musical endeavors. Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse is a double album concocted in fourteen cities, issued on 12” LP vinyl a day after Bernie's birthday, (April 19) on Record Store Day 2024 by Org Music in conjunction with Loantaka Records as a Record Store Day “exclusive.” As of June 28 it's also available via streaming platforms. The release will be accompanied by a bound-to-be viral video of the title track directed by Los Angeles-based dancer, Madeline Riley. Taylor has remained behind the scenes for most of his career. He worked in various capacities with Worrell, mike watt, Money Mark, Theresa Wayman (Warpaint), King Tuff, The Chapin Sisters, and Jimmy Destri of Blondie. He has made 1960's country-influenced records with members of Black Flag, participated in eclectic recording projects and performed with practically every member of Talking Heads. Evan's also released a string of critically acclaimed singles as part of the Art-Rock duo Purple Witch of Culver. Evan has never identified with the archetype of “cosmic Funkateer.” He grew up with diverse tastes that ran from The Beach Boys to Prince. As a producer his brand has been “staying off-brand.” In 2022, Taylor was presented with a unique opportunity he felt he had been preparing for his entire career. Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse addresses the abundance of unfinished work Bernie Worrell, a prolific writer and visionary, left behind when he passed away in 2016. These compositions remained untouched for a period of decades, collecting dust on reels of two-inch analog tape. Eventually, the tapes were re-examined to analyze Bernie's nuanced and creative method. After a period of deep reflection, the Bernie Worrell estate decided it was time to complete his vision. With a series of Bernie's collaborators, contemporaries, and friends including Bootsy Collins, Sean Ono Lennon, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Fred Schneider (B52s), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Steve Scales, Marc Ribot, Fred Wesley (James Brown, Parliament), Marco Benevento, Stanton Moore (Galactic), Steven Bernstein, Daru Jones (Jack White), Will Calhoun (Living Colour, mike watt, Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Jared Samuel Elioseff, Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton (TV on the Radio), Binky Griptite (Dap Kings), Nick Montoya, Paul Dooely, Alecia Chakour, Smokey Hormel, Ana Becker, Eric McFadden (Sgt. Splendor), Sarah La Puerta, Michael Rueben and many more innovators his initiative was completed with dedication to preserving the integrity of the magic which makes Bernie a beloved extraordinary soul. Also included on the album is a previously unreleased Funkadelic track, “Contusion,” which showcases Bernie's masterful work with the group. https://loantaka-records.com/ . http://evantaylormusic.com.

A true classic album for our 3rd LP deep dive - do we think that Blondie's most revered record stands the test of time? We talk about the history of the iconic band, how they came together, and what were the ingredients that made this, their 3rd LP, so special. All six members of the band - Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, Clem Burke, Jimmy Destri, Nigel Harrison and Frank Infante - had songwriting credits on the record, and so we look at their contributions on the twelve tracks, along with the three covers included on the album. It was a surprise to discover that one of these songs was actually not a Blondie original, and so we created a top 10 list of cover songs you probably didn't know were cover songs. Let us know if you have any suggestions to add that should have made our list! The instantly recognisable album cover is discussed including why the band were not happy with it even though it has been lauded ever since. There have been numerous reenactments of the sleeve artwork, inclduing a Britpop frontman looking very fetching as Debbie Harry - find out who it is! We also look at where the album title, Parallel Lines, came from and highlight a wonderful documentary and a brilliant live performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test from New Years Eve 1979 in Glasgow - what a way to usher in the new decade! Links below. Finally 1978 gets our full attention. As well as reviewing what was competing with Blondie in the album and singles charts from September 1978, we discover what was dominating the movie charts. Maybe you too believed a man could fly! Blondie had already established mainstream success by the time they released Eat to the Beat, their fourth studio album. Their previous album featured the hit singles “One Way or Another” and “Heart of Glass.” While not duplicating the commercial success of its predecessor, Eat to the Beat would nevertheless showcase Blondie's diversity while continuing to draw a mainstream audience led by the hit song “Dreaming.”Blondie was an American band formed in 1974 by guitarist Chris Stein and vocalist (and former Playboy Bunny) Debbie Harry. The name of the group was originally called “Angel and the Snake,” but they changed the name to Blondie based on catcalls Harry often heard from truck drivers on the road. Blondie was a six person band for Eat to the Beat, with Harry and Stein joined by Frank Infante on guitar, Nigel Harrison on bass, Jimmy Destri on keyboards, and Clem Burke on drums. The band came out of the punk and new wave genre originally, but had already achieved crossover appeal (and accusations of selling out) with the disco-influenced “Heart of Glass.” Eat to the Beat would see further diversity in genre and sound bringing rock, reggae, and disco-influenced tracks complementing the synth-heavy new wave sensibilities. If your familiarity with Blondie is limited to the hits played on top 40 radio, you will be impressed with the variety of sounds and genres represented on this single album..DreamingThis song was written by Harry and Stein, and was inspired by ABBA. There is a lot of energy in this song, and the drums are a big part of that. The drummer, Clem Burke, was "blowing through the song," and deliberately overplaying it on this fast-paced take — they ended up using this one for the track. The Hardest PartThe funky sound of this deep cut characterizes the diversity in the album. The song itself is about a heist. “The hardest part of the armored guard...big man of steel behind the steering wheel.”ShaylaLed by a synth prelude, this song depicts a woman who works in a factory. There's an alternative, almost “coffee shop” feel to this one, and it truly showcases Debbie Harry's range in vocal talents.AtomicWe're getting a western or surf music-influenced sound with this fourth track. Destri and Harry were attempting something similar to “Heart of Glass,” and there is a definite dance feel to the song. The bass solo in the middle of the song is a nice touch. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the animated television series “Scooby-Doo”The character "Scrappy-Doo" was introduced to the Scooby-Doo lineup...beginning the start of a long line of mediocre to horrible cartoons. STAFF PICKS:Pop Muzik by MWayne leads off the staff picks with a one hit wonder from a new wave and synthpop music project from London. M was musician Robin Scott, his brother Julian bass, and his wife Brigit on backing vocals and other backing musicians known as "The Factor." It is sung from the perspective of a disc jockey spinning records at a dance club.. Lonesome Loser by the Little River BandBrian brings us the distinctive harmonies of the Little River Band. While the band is from Australia, the founding members were from the UK. The song is about a guy who is "unlucky in love," but keeps trying rather than taking a hard look at himself and realizing that he won't find love without getting himself right first. Sail On by The CommodoresBruce's pick features the close harmonies and excellent piano work of Lionel Richie and company from The Commodores and their seventh studio album. The song itself is a break-up song, but it is more resigned than angry or sad. "It was plain to see that a small town boy link me just-a wasn't your cup of tea, I was wishful thinking."Goodbye Stranger by SupertrampRob's staff pick is off Supertramp's sixth and fantastically successful studio album “Breakfast In America.” Surprisingly, this song did not do well in the UK, but made it to number 15 in the States. "And I will go on shining, shining like brand new, and when I look behind me my troubles will be few." Davies and Hodgson wrote the songs, and wrote separately. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Regatta de Blanc by The PoliceStewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Sting make their third appearance as our instrumental track with the title track to their second studio album.

My guest is Laura Davis-Chanin. Her new book is The Girl In The Back: A Female Drummer's Life with Bowie, Blondie and the '70s Rock Scene (https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Back-Female-Drummers-Blondie/dp/1617136875). Nineteen seventy-seven. New York City. Dark. Dangerous. Thrilling. Punk Rock. Blondie. David Bowie. Drinking. Drugs. Happening at the speed of light. Seventeen-year old Laura quaking within her skin while the bursting punk rock revolution explodes around her starts a band with her teenage friends called the Student Teachers. She's the drummer. They play legendary clubs CBGB and Max's Kansas City. They rehearse madly write songs and tour the East Coast, all between final exams at school. In comes Jimmy Destri from Blondie. He thinks the Student Teachers are terrific! And then he falls in love with Laura. He pulls her into the glamorous life of Blondie and introduces her to David Bowie. Bowie takes an interest in Laura's band, attends their rehearsals, and sets them up to open for Iggy Pop at the Palladium on Halloween 1979. It's exhilarating! It's the beginning of amazing success in rock 'n' roll! Until it all comes to a stunning stop. After playing a show at Town Hall in 1980, Laura is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Does it all fall apart? Later, at a dinner with Bowie, he whispers something to Laura. And it helps her save her life. In prose that flows like music, Laura Davis-Chanin presents a rich work of narrative nonfiction that is not only deeply personal but also revealing of the punk rock heyday in New York City.
