Now that you've heard what a special place Newport Folk has become, let's go back in time to learn a bit more about how we got here. Guided by the founder of the Newport Folk Festival, the legendary George Wein, we'll take you to the roots of the festival with one-time Newport board member Judy Collins, and we'll hear from Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe about the role Newport played in developing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which you may have learned about in Season 1. We'll travel from legendary moments from the festival's early history, including Mavis Staples' first opportunity to meet Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, to Newport's return from hiatus in 1985, all the way to Jim James and current Executive Director Jay Sweet first approaching George Wein with a vision for the future of the festival, which simultaneously brought it back to its roots. All of these moments have led to a stronger Newport community than ever, a place where veterans and newcomers alike are constantly working together, influencing each other, and inspiring us all to strive for a spirit of unity and a better world.  Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan.

Looking ahead to his New Year's Eve dance party, Chicago musician and activist Ric Wilson hopes that disco ideals will reign supreme. Wilson is wrapping a busy 2024 that brought domestic and international tours with DRAMA, Black Pumas, Yellow Days and Chromeo. But Chicago's “Disco Ric” will have one grand finale: “America Runs On Disco,” a year-end celebration, at Lincoln Hall. Wilson's new single also is called “America Runs on Disco,” and it's out Dec. 17 (an EP of the same name is due out in 2025). The song reflects Wilson's thoughts over the past two years on escapism and paying homage to disco's inclusive ethos. Stopping by the Vocalo studio last week, Wilson spoke with host Nudia Hernandez about his love of Chicago house music, his secret for thriving on 7-hour flights to London and his penchant for civic engagement. This segment was hosted and produced by Nudia Hernandez. It was edited by Morgan Ciocca. Rob recorded his June 6, 2024 talk at his local Trout Unlimited chapter. The subject was urban fishing in Northern Virginia. Locations were chosen based on their unconventional locations. Three locations are next to sewage treat meant plants. One spot is an urban waterfront along the Potomac, another is a tidal creek you wouldn't notice without Google Maps. Rob talks about each location, the gear required, the season to fish, flies to use, and where to grab lunch after. You might want to wear running shoes just incase the man chases you out. Be sure to let loved ones know where you are fishing just incase you decide to fish a swamp with unexploded WWII ordinances. It wasn't until the talk was over that Rob figured out where he should have placed the microphone. Apologies for sound quality on this one. Turn your volume UP. Rob hopes to see you at the Black Pumas show at Wolf Trap on July 28 Flies mentioned in this episode. Produced by Jason Reif. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We are back with a new episode of That's How I Remember It, and we celebrate being back with excellent guest Eric Burton of the Black Pumas. The Black Pumas formed in 2018 and their rise can only be called meteoric. The band went from a bar residency to Grammy nominations and worldwide touring. We talked about this, skateboarding to Albert King, external meanings being attached to the BP song “Colors”, the first meeting with his bandmate Adrian Quesada, meditating before shows, and being present and grateful in the music itself. A great talk, huge thanks to Eric for joining me.

Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/black-pumasSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeIn just seven years since meeting based on a recommendation, Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada formed the Black Pumas, released two albums, and have already been nominated for seven Grammys. However, this fruitful friendship was almost never developed.Quesada was enrolled at the University of Texas but flunking out due to his dedication to guitar over textbooks. His parents gave him a proposition: Either stay home in Laredo, or return to Austin without a guitar in hand to focus on studying. He went with option B and headed back for school in Austin—or so his parents thought. Quesada took his remaining book money (about $200) and headed to Ray Hennig's Heart of Texas, where he snagged a Squier Telecaster Thinline. His parents eventually figured out the switcheroo, but Quesada was determined and hasn't looked back. (Side note: The family obviously sees and supports his musical talents, and attended Black Pumas' Ryman show the night before the filming of this Rig Rundown.) That matador move pulled off by Quesada allowed him to become a longtime fixture in the Austin music scene with bands Brownout, Ocote Soul Sound, Spanish Gold, Echocentrics, and Grupo Fantasma (with whom he played for over 15 years, earning a 2011 Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album). He started to explore new ideas that didn't fit the mold for Grupo, and needed someone to narrate his musical vistas. A friend recommended he link up with Austin newcomer Eric Burton, who traded his busking spot on the Santa Monica pier for the bright lights of Sixth Street. The duo met up, and as the results prove, the rest is history. Before the Black Pumas' second headlining show at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville, bandleader Adrian Quesada, bassist Brendan Bond, and band tech Bryan Wilkinson invited PG's Chris Kies into the hallowed grounds for a chill conversation about their tonal tools. During our time with the Black Pumas, we learned about Quesada's love for tremolo (he even included it as a secret weapon in a semi-hollow Jazzmaster), Bond's fateful trip to the Wilco Loft in Chicago, and why a '59 ES-125 is Wilkinson's perfect pairing with Burton's expressive and emotive voice.Full Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/black-pumasSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear: https://bit.ly/GiveawaysPG Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENLMerch & Magazines: https://shop.premierguitar.comPG's Facebook: https://facebook.com/premierguitarPG's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/premierguitar/PG's Twitter: https://twitter.com/premierguitarPG's Threads: https://threads.net/@premierguitarPG's TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@premierguitar[Brought to you by D'Addario: https://ddar.io/wykyk-rr & https://ddari.io/xpnd.rr]© Copyright Gearhead Communications LLC, 20240:00 - D'Addario XPND Pedalboard0:15 - Chris Kies Intro1:57 - Adrian Quesada Intro3:15 - Touring with Vintage Gear4:02 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Custom Shop Telecaster6:13 - Playing with Fingers or Pick8:03 - College or Guitar?9:14 - Adrian Quesada's Strings10:00 - Adrian Quesada's Gibson ES-34511:53 - Playing ES-345 with DI Fuzz13:11 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster Thinline14:27 - Built-in Tremolo17:33 - Adrian Quesada's Fender Limited Edition '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb18:36 - Adrian Quesada's Pedalboard30:05 - D'Addario XPND & John Bohlinger30:55 - Brendan Bond Intro31:49 - Brendan Bond's 1974 Fender P Bass36:15 - Brendan Bond Fingerstyle & Bass...

Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Singer-songwriter Jaime Wyatt joins Rhett to talk about her latest album “Feel Good”, working with Black Pumas' Adrian Quesada, and the process of exploring new sounds during the making of the record. Jaime talks about her growth as an artist, why she practices radical self care, and the two discuss the concept of authenticity in music. Hailed by Pitchfork as one of the “most exciting and skillful storytellers” working today, Jaime Wyatt is the kind of generational talent whose raw, honest lyricism is matched only by the power of her huge, unmistakable voice. Her album, Feel Good, takes Wyatt to new heights. Feel Good is bold and ecstatic, built on tight, intoxicating grooves that belie the songs' substantial emotional stakes.  Listen to Feel Good Jaime Wyatt website Follow Jaime @jaimewyatt Rhett Miller website Follow Rhett @rhettmiller Wheels Off is hosted and produced by Rhett Miller. Say She She is here and I am still smiling from this super fun conversation I had with this stellar trio!!  The amazing Nya, Piya and Sabrina have been close friends for ages, and have finally come together in recent years to combine absolutely enthralling vocals with a vibey funk style they've dubbed "discodelic," and it's totally infectious. Their second album, Silver, released in 2023 has set a high benchmark for this expanding genre.  Fun times aside, these stellar women have been touring hard and killing it on stages both large and small, as well as massive shows from Glastonbury in the UK to the Hollywood Bowl to Central Park Summerstage. Their stories from the road are indeed epic but even more importantly, Say She She flies the flag for empowerment, diversity and social awareness; they are a band with a higher purpose, if you will. Their recent song, Norma, written in response to the overturning of Roe v Wade has propelled them speak out and raise money not only for reproductive rights, but also for other important causes such as stricter gun control legislation and climate change awareness.  Say She She is a bright light of awesome vibes and feel good music, while setting a shining example for new generations of young women. This interview is as inspiring as it is fun, and I'm all in!!

They dive into the making of their latest album, Chronicles Of A Diamond, how they received blessings from Rodríguez and Tracy Chapman to cover "Sugar Man" and "Fast Car," and, of course, some "Top 5s." The Grammy-nominated Austin, TX-based duo Black Pumas (singer/songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada) return with their sophomore album Chronicles Of A Diamond, out October 27th via ATO. Burton describes today's Song of the Day as “the exclamation point on the initiation of mine and Adrian's relationship in the first place.” “That's what we sound like, together when he is introducing music to me for me to then find the character or the moment to embellish and add colours to that initial canvas,” he told NME.  He adds in a press release, “'More Than a Love Song' is a message I borrowed from my Uncle Steve. As a songwriter and caregiver, he'd listen to me write songs from afar and if I were lucky he'd have a pointer or two for me. ‘Life is more than a love song.'” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
