In this episode, we feature a brand-new deposition-related ruling that continues to build on the post-COVID pandemic rulings holding that in-person depositions remain the default and that parties seeking to force a remote-video deposition must satisfy the formidable good-cause burden. It's a great decision for your research bank, as are the others we've provided in the show notes below. And here's a bulletin for you. As Jim explains here, research in the field of behavioral psychology shows us there's a powerful psychological reason for insisting that your deponent appear in person - and it isn't that you can personally gauge their demeanor. On today's show we look at some AppleTV and Home announcements from the Apple WWDC and look at what that fuss is about the new Sony's True RGB TVs. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Households Used More Than 10 Video Services Daily Google Rolls Out a Major Update to Its Google TV Streamer 4k Apple TV from Apple's WWDC 2026 Key takeaways for Apple TV from Apple's WWDC 2026 are relatively modest and software-focused, as the event emphasized iOS 27. tvOS 27 Highlights for Apple TV Larger Text / System-Wide Text Size Adjustment: A new accessibility option lets users increase on-screen text size across supported apps and the interface. AI-Generated / On-Device Subtitles: tvOS 27 adds real-time automatic subtitle generation for videos lacking built-in captions (including personal content).  Other Refinements: Expect Liquid Glass UI polish, performance/stability improvements, smarter recommendations, and better smart home/HomeKit ties. Siri upgrades (more conversational, on-screen awareness) should improve voice control on Apple TV, though full Apple Intelligence features may wait for new hardware. tvOS 27 developer betas are available now post-keynote, with public release expected in fall 2026 alongside other OS updates. As far as the Apple Home app goes, updates  mainly dealt with Apple Intelligence integration for smarter camera handling and notifications: The Home app now uses Apple Intelligence to generate natural language descriptions of compatible camera footage, letting you search clips conversationally by saying something like,  "show me when the dog was in the backyard" Smarter batched notifications that feel less overwhelming. Alerts are intelligently grouped and dynamic instead of constant floods. Accessory updates update in real-time as conditions change. With deeper Siri AI and Shortcuts integration you can describe automations in natural language and let Siri build them (including Home shortcuts). Voice control becomes more conversational and context-aware. Hardware Notes No new Apple TV 4K hardware was announced at WWDC (consistent with expectations). A refreshed model with A17 Pro (or similar) for full Apple Intelligence/Siri 2.0 support, better smart home capabilities, and possibly Wi-Fi 7 has been "ready for months" but is being held for later in 2026 to align with the advanced AI features. What is Sony's True RGB TV All About? Sony's True RGB is Sony's marketing name for their advanced RGB Mini-LED backlight technology, introduced in 2026 for high-end BRAVIA TVs the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II series. How True RGB Works Traditional Mini-LED or QLED TVs typically use white or blue LEDs as the backlight, then pass that light through color filters or Quantum Dots to create colors. This filtering process can reduce color purity, brightness, and efficiency. Sony's True RGB technology takes a different approach by using tiny independent red, green, and blue (RGB) LEDs in the backlight, with each color LED controllable separately across thousands or even millions of local dimming zones, generating color directly at the light source before it reaches the LCD layer rather than filtering white light. Sony's True RGB technology delivers purer and more accurate colors with a significantly wider color volume and gamut, higher peak brightness while maintaining excellent color accuracy, superior contrast and black levels that can challenge OLED performance in certain scenarios, improved energy efficiency through smart power distribution algorithms that use less power than previous generations, and outstanding off-angle viewing with minimal color shift. Key Advantages Sony Highlights Sony's True RGB technology delivers true-to-source color accuracy, backed by the company's deep professional monitor expertise and decades of innovation in RGB technology dating back to the groundbreaking 2004 QUALIA series. This is powered by advanced RGB Backlight Master Drive processing that expertly manages the immense complexity of controlling millions of individual colored diodes in real time. Overall, it successfully combines the best of Mini-LED brightness with near-OLED levels of color performance and contrast. In short, True RGB is Sony's premium implementation of direct RGB Mini-LED backlighting. Sony emphasizes not just the hardware (RGB LEDs), but their proprietary optical design, drivers, and image processing to make it perform better than competing RGB LED TVs from other brands. Sony True RGB Models with Pricing (2026 Lineup) Prices are MSRP/launch pricing (as of mid-2026; actual street prices and sales vary by retailer like Best Buy, Crutchfield, or Sony's site). Larger sizes command big premiums. BRAVIA 7 II - more accessible entry into True RGB, excellent color and brightness for the price 50" — ~$1,600 55" — ~$2,100 65" — ~$2,600 75" — ~$3,100 85" — ~$4,000 98" — ~$9,000 BRAVIA 9 II - higher brightness, more advanced processing, better anti-glare, and local dimming performance 65" — ~$3,600 75" — ~$4,600 85" — ~$6,500 115" — ~$31,000 (a massive premium flagship option)

What started as a practical solution for their own needs eventually became a commercial product designed to make whole-home audio more affordable, elegant, and reliable. The conversation explores the advantages of built-in audio systems over bulky “wireless” speakers, especially for new construction, remodels, and retrofits. Colton explains why hardwired, centralized audio systems can offer better aesthetics, stronger reliability, and higher sound quality than many plug-in alternatives.Colton also walks through the early days of launching Juke Audio, including the unforgettable first sale around Thanksgiving 2019, the simple website that helped validate demand, and the handwritten notes that helped create early customer loyalty. From there, he shares how the company built trust through industry trade shows, awards, customer support, Crutchfield, Amazon, authentic founder-led social media content, and user-generated videos. This episode also dives into one of the toughest challenges product brands face: copycats. Easton explained how they built the program from a 3-win team to a 34-3 national champion, emphasizing the importance of constant pressure defense, decision-making development through game-like practice situations, and individual player development based on each player's unique strengths. Bazzoli discussed their offensive philosophy of creating constant pressure while maintaining high IQ decision-making, their approach to practice where they play 5-on-5 competition almost daily, and their focus on developing high-character players over pure talent. Easton also shared insights on substitution patterns, player development, and how they've adapted the system to fit their personality and team needs while maintaining the core principles of constant pressure and relentless competition. Easton Bazzoli led Gannon University to the 2026 NCAA Division II national championship, guiding the Golden Knights to a 34–3 record. Gannon also captured the PSAC West Division title and finished 19–1 in conference play. Bazzoli was named PSAC West Coach of the Year, and the national title marked the first men's basketball championship in program history, establishing Gannon among the elite programs in Division II. Through two seasons as head coach, he has compiled a 61–10 overall record with an 8–1 mark in NCAA Tournament play.

The Uberization of UPL? How AI Is Outpacing the Unauthorized Practice of Law (Ken Crutchfield, Bill Henderson, Jim Doppke)

Technically Legal

The legal industry is not confronting a single disruption but a redistribution of work, capital, and regulation across a system under stress. The boundaries of Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL) in the near term may be defined more by what regulators must allow than what they restrict. These are just a couple of conclusions from author and legal business strategist Ken Crutchfield in a recent trilogy of articles he penned about the pressure artificial intelligence is placing on legal service delivery and regulations barring the unauthorized practice of law.  In this episode, Ken is joined by Indiana University Mauer School of Law Professor, Bill Hendersonand ethics attorney Jim Doppke to discuss how Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) are disrupting the legal industry. The conversation focuses on the shifting boundaries of UPL regulation and how technology is redistributing legal work from traditional law firms to consumers and Alternative Legal Service Providers (ALSPs). The panel explores the "Uberization" of UPL rules—where technology precedes regulation—and the tension between protecting the public from "bad" AI advice and yet leveraging these tools to bridge the massive Access to Justice gap. Things We Talk About in this Episode The ROI of AI: Significant investment in legal tech is driven by the potential to replace labor with technology, rather than just replacing older software. Defining the Line: Regulators are struggling to distinguish between providing "legal information" (permissible) and "legal advice" (restricted). The "Whole Product" Solution: While AI can generate drafts, it often lacks the "tacit knowledge" and human trust required to navigate the Byzantine court system. Regulatory Shift: Rather than banning LLMs, regulators are increasingly focused on holding individual lawyers accountable for the "wrong" use of technology (e.g., failing to verify AI-generated citations). Allied Legal Professionals (ALPs): Emerging roles, like those being piloted in Indiana, may serve as a human bridge between AI-driven tools and underserved populations. He was indifferent to many of them (“No one is going to like you guys, but I'll have you back,” he told Joey Ramone), blissfully unaware of how important his scruffy little club would soon become. In the span of only 15 months, the five groups that comprise the CBGB's pantheon all debuted: Television in March 1974, followed by Ramones in August and Blondie in October, then Patti Smith in February 1975 and Talking Heads four months later. Those five groups all quickly got record deals and became popular enough to outgrow CBGB's. By the fall of 1977, Smith was the only one who was still playing there. What succeeded the Big Five was an array of new and retro styles, all of which feature here: No Wave (Sonic Youth, Mars, DNA, Bush Tetras), post-punk (Ritual Tension, Unknown Gender, Khmer Rouge), mutant funk and R&B (James Chance & The Contortions, Mink DeVille), art-rock bands (R.L. Crutchfield's Dark Day, The Revelons, Erasers, Jeff and Jane Hudson) hardcore punk (Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Vatican Commandos, Beastie Boys), and lots of power pop (Sorrows, The dBs, The Rudies, The Miamis, The Paley Brothers) . The club's best-known bands are present on this compilation but we've also revived interest in dozens of unfairly forgotten acts that, for a moment in time, made an album, EP, 45, or even a demo that crackled with innovation, wit, and joy. CBGB no longer exists, at least not in the physical plane, but what happened between those soot-filled, beer-stinking walls continues to reverberate around the world.

In this episode, Jim Garrity discusses two brand-new court rulings that reflect a growing trend among judges to enforce noticed in-person depositions of parties and key witnesses. It's a subtle but striking shift away from remote depositions, which took root during the COVID pandemic. Jim discusses the rulings in detail, as well as an interesting observation by an Illinois federal judge about the behavioral psychology that favors face-to-face confrontations. Finally, Jim offers practical guidance on arguments to make for and against remote depositions in your cases, including the two most powerful arguments to make when seeking an order requiring a deponent to appear in person.SHOW NOTESJames, et al. v. Thomas, Case No. 1:24-CV-00061-RGJ-LLK, 2025 WL 2945597 (W. I'm going to begin with a wonderful quote from a recent editorial in Bioethics by our guests Parker Crutchfield & Jason Wasserman. This quote illustrates the tension between the widely held view in bioethics that slow codes are unethical, and the complexity of real world hospital practice: “Decisive moral positions are easy to come by when sitting in the cheap seats of academic journals, but a troubling ambivalence is naturally characteristic of live dilemmas.” Gina Piscitello, our third guest, recently surveyed doctors, nurses and others at 2 academic medical centers about slow codes.  In a paper published in JPSM, she found that two thirds had cared for a patient where a slow code was performed.  Over half believed that a slow code is ethical if they believed the code is futile. Slow codes are happening. The accepted academic bioethics stance that slow codes are unethical is not making it through to practicing clinicians. Our 3 guests were panelists at a session of the American Society of Bioethics and the Humanities annual meeting last year, and their panel discussion was apparently the talk of the meeting. Today we talk about what constitutes a slow code, short code, show code, and “Hollywood code.” We talk about walk don't run, shallow compressions, and…injecting the epi into the mattress! We explore the arguments for and against slow codes: harm to families, harm to patients, moral distress for doctors and nurses; deceit, trust, and communication; do outcomes (e.g. family feels code was attempted) matter more than values (e.g. never lie or withhold information from family)? We talk about the classic bioethics “trolley problem” and how it might apply to slow codes (for a longer discussion see this paper by Parker Crutchfield).  We talk about the role of the law, fear of litigation, and legislative overreach (for more see this paper by Jason Wasserman). We disagree if slow codes are ever ethical.  I argue that Eric's way out of this is a slow code in disguise. One thing we can all agree about: the ethics of slow codes need a rethink. Stop! In the name of love. Before you break my heart. Think it over… -Alex Smith

The Wild West of AI: A Legal Tech Reckoning with Ken Crutchfield

The Geek In Review

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2025 48:13

This week, we welcome longtime friend and legal tech veteran Ken Crutchfield, founder of Spring Forward Consulting. Ken brings his extensive experience from major legal information vendors like Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg, and Wolters Kluwer into a timely and candid discussion about the current phase of artificial intelligence in the legal industry. Comparing today's generative AI surge to the American Industrial Revolution, Ken describes this moment as the “Wild West” era—full of promise, hype, overinvestment, and, critically, few rules.Drawing historical parallels to railroads, oil barons, and steel magnates, Ken illustrates how unchecked growth and technological innovation can outpace regulation until market forces or policy catch up. He notes the resurgence of large-scale infrastructure investment, now not in steel or steam, but in compute power and data centers. Just as J.P. Morgan helped stabilize chaotic markets in the 19th century, Ken suggests today's AI frontier needs a similar recalibration, and possibly new rules of engagement. The conversation shifts toward the practical realities of legal tech adoption. Ken emphasizes that law firms' expectations of perfection often collide with startups' resource limitations. Vendors need to rethink how they engage with firms by building credibility, focusing on integration, and delivering actual use-case wins. Firms, in turn, must move beyond the billable hour mindset and consider new metrics like Return on Experience. Adoption is no longer optional, it's strategic, competitive, and increasingly client-driven.Ken also unpacks the looming implications of content rights and data ownership in the age of AI. If firms aren't investing in data hygiene now, they risk being left behind when more sophisticated AI tools demand clean, structured, and secure datasets. AI isn't just about automating workflows, it's about being ready to plug into a future where interoperability, metadata, and permissions will dictate who thrives and who gets leapfrogged. Finally, Ken calls for scenario planning: not just reacting to what OpenAI or Anthropic might do next, but anticipating it. Firms and vendors alike should double down on what works, define success before launching new projects, and invest in meaningful adoption strategies. In a world moving this fast, it's no longer about who gets there first, it's about who gets there with a plan.Listen on mobile platforms:  Apple Podcasts |  Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript

A lot of people follow the script—go to school, get the job, work hard—and still feel like they're barely making it. You put in the hours, do what you're told is “right,” but the numbers never seem to add up. It's like chasing a finish line that keeps moving, while watching others take completely different routes and somehow end up ahead. At some point, it's natural to wonder if the whole system was designed to keep you just comfortable enough not to question it. That quiet frustration builds, until you start looking for something that actually makes sense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwXRbX4rPNY Dr. Johnoson Crutchfield went from school principal to full-time real estate investor after realizing his career wouldn't fund the life he wanted. With over 300 properties under his belt, he now helps others do the same through his mentorship program, Grab the Map. Today, he discusses how to find and finance your first deal, even if you're starting from scratch. He emphasizes mindset, persistence, and learning how to see opportunities others miss.
