Mike has published eight novels, written a stage musical, and optioned multiple screenplays through prestigious competitions including the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the Page International Screenwriting Awards, ScreenCraft, and the Nantucket Film Festival. The conversation weaves together music, memory, friendship, and the creative life — all anchored in the gritty, soulful sounds of the 1970s and early '80s. Mike's live music journey begins with a memorable — if reluctant — first show: escorting his grandmother to see Liberace at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. His real musical awakening came when he saw the J. Geils Band at the old Boston Garden as a teenager, an experience he still counts among his best. The blues-driven energy of "House Party" and "Musta Got Lost" made a lifelong impression, and he draws a sharp distinction between that era of J. Geils and the MTV-era band that followed. Few yacht rock hits of the 70s have endured as well as Player's 1977 classic "Baby Come Back." While they had a few other hits, they've been completely overshadowed by this monolith. What you may not be as aware of is the vast songwriting career of frontman Peter Beckett. Remember "Twist of Fate" by Olivia Newton-John? That was Peter. Or "Dare to Fall in Love" by Brent Bourgeois? Also Peter. There's also been the Temptations, Commodores, Survivor, Heart. Grace Slick, and Janet and Jermaine Jackson. There was even a stint in Little River Band. These days he's embracing the yacht rock life for all it's worth and tells us stories about all of it including seeing the Beatles at the Cavern! It's stories galore this week! Among the thousands of staff cuts and billions of dollars eliminated from federal programs is support to prevent and respond to domestic violence. Organizations that facilitate women's shelters, preventative outreach, case managers, and legal help are mostly going it alone without the once-powerful assistance of the federal government. Many are in survival mode after the sudden and unexpected elimination of funding that had been promised. The U.S. Department of Justice has also removed its access to research and recommendations about violence against Indigenous women. We'll find out how some shelters are working despite the setbacks. We'll also remember long-time women's advocate Charon Asetoyer. Among other things, she founded the Native American Community Board that works to strengthen women's health, safety, and justice. Asetoyer walked on September 26. The original Count--Butch Burden is still thumping the bass and singing the songs. Count & The Colony were the up-and-coming band in the mid-60s, hitting the road with Question Mark & The Mysterians, as well flagging shared management with Lilly Gonzales, touring in the Count's teen years. The road was no stumbling block, providing city-to-city exposure, parties, and dedication to craft which remains to this day. Then the money dried up. A Tangerine Records contract with the Ray Charles Estate included four originals that have never been released.    Burden took his rich vocals, showmanship, and musical drive back home to Mid-Michigan where he continues to reside, 60 years later. His shows are documented in this two-part series through time, story, and epic detail. The bands that he jammed with, the music he created, and the longing to continue to be in a cover oriented group, Count & The Change, giving him a lifetime as a musician.    Here in Part 2 of 2, Butch dives into the hotel residencies with Amphagas that put the spotlight on the band with the likes of Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Little River Band, George Benson, Liza Minelli, and moments with Robert Plant and Patti LaBelle that made up fantastic memories. That turned into an album that released in 2021, What Love Makes Us Do. Beeb Birtles was born Gerard Bertelkamp in 1948, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Beeb is a celebrated musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist. As a founding member of iconic bands such as Zoot, Mississippi, and the Little River Band, Birtles has left an indelible mark on the music industry, both in Australia and internationally. His story is one of remarkable transition—from his Dutch heritage to becoming an influential figure in Australian rock.Gerard Bertelkamp, better known by his stage name Beeb Birtles, was born into a Dutch family in post-war Amsterdam. His father was a skilled carpenter and building contractor, while his mother shared a love for music that would influence her son's career. In 1959, the Bertelkamp family embarked on a life-changing journey - emigrating to Australia. Settling in Adelaide, South Australia, the family embraced their new home, which provided fertile ground for young Gerard's passion for music to flourish.While attending high School in Adelaide, Beeb formed his first band, Times Unlimited. This group evolved into Down the Line, where he began honing his craft by covering popular English Mod songs. In 1967, Birtles joined the influential band Zoot as the bassist and vocalist. Zoot gained popularity with its energetic performances and hits like a rock-infused version of The Beatles' “Eleanor Rigby.”Zoot's success propelled Beeb into the limelight, but the band disbanded in '71, paving the way for new musical endeavours. Beeb then formed the duo Frieze with fellow Zoot member (the late) Darryl Cotton, which marked another chapter in his early career.In '72, Beeb joined the folk-rock group Mississippi, which later transformed into the Little River Band (LRB) in 1975. As a founding member, Beeb played a pivotal role in crafting the band's harmonious rock sound, contributing to their global success. Hits like “Reminiscing,” “Help Is on Its Way,” and “Lonesome Loser” cemented the band's reputation as one of Australia's greatest musical exports. Beeb remained with the Little River Band until 1983, during which they sold millions of records worldwide.After leaving LRB, Birtles collaborated with Graeham Goble, another LRB alum, to form the duo Birtles & Goble, releasing the album The Last Romance. He later pursued solo projects, including the 2000 album Driven by Dreams. In 2002, Birtles reunited with former LRB members Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble to form Birtles Shorrock Goble, performing LRB classics alongside new material.Beeb Birtles' contributions to music have earned him widespread recognition. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to music and inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2004 alongside his Little River Band colleagues. He was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia “for significant service to the performing arts as a singer, songwriter and musician”.Despite his success in Australia and beyond, Beeb remains deeply connected to his Dutch roots. English born Glenn Shorrock is one of the most iconic and influential singer-songwriters to emerge from Australia's rich music scene. Best known as the founding lead vocalist of Little River Band, Glenn's career spans over six decades, marked by global chart success, critically acclaimed albums, and unforgettable live performances. His deep, resonant voice and exceptional songwriting have defined the soundtracks of generations, contributing timeless classics that have shaped the landscape of classic rock and pop. Glenn's family moved to Adelaide in the 50s, where his love for music blossomed. By the early 60s, he co-founded The Twilights, a rock band that became one of Australia's most popular groups. The Twilights achieved national fame then in 69, Glenn co-founded Axiom, often regarded as one of Australia's first ‘supergroups.' Alongside music legend Brian Cadd, Axiom crafted sophisticated, soulful rock with hits like A Little Ray of Sunshine and Arkansas Grass. The band's blend of folk, rock, and pop elements set a new standard for Australian music, earning both critical and commercial success. The mid-70s saw Glenn co-found Little River Band . Combining lush harmonies and rock-driven melodies, LRB became the first Australian band to achieve sustained international success. As the lead vocalist, Glenn was the unmistakable voice behind all of their global hits, including “Reminiscing,” “Help Is on Its Way,” “Lonesome Loser,” “Cool Change,” and “Lady.” Little River Band enjoyed unprecedented success in the US with their sophisticated sound earning them 13 American Top 40 hits between 75 and 83. Shorrock's voice became synonymous with the band's transcontinental appeal. In 82, after some infighting amongst band members, Glenn went solo and has enjoyed considerable success ever since. Throughout the 80s and beyond, Shorrock released a series of solo works, dabbled in musical theatre and collaborated with several of his musical mates. Glenn was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame as part of Little River Band in 2004. Today at 80, Glenn Shorrock still inspires generations of musicians and songwriters and his songs which are often infused with themes of nostalgia, love, and self-reflection, continue to resonate with listeners around the world. Glenn remains a vibrant force in the music scene. He still performs live, delighting fans with renditions of his classic hits while introducing new music that highlights his ever-evolving artistry. Robby Carden has been a member of the Jared Stout Band since the spring of 2019. Throughout his career, Robby has had the honor of opening for iconic artists such as Blues Traveler, Emmylou Harris, Chris Knight, Shooter Jennings, Sam Williams, Phil Vassar, 38 Special, and the Little River Band.   A seasoned performer, Robby was part of the *FloydFest Band on Fire* winning group, Welcome to Hoonah, and the runner-up with Seph Custer and the Flatbreaks. With the Jared Stout Band, he achieved recognition as a *FloydFest On the Rise* runner-up and frequently appears as a FloydFest Artist at Large. Robby is also an Artist at Large and house band member at Rooster Walk Music & Arts Festival.   His recording credits include collaborations with Morgan Wade and the Stepbrothers, Tobacco Apache, Riverbank Ramblers, Funk Punch, The Mad Iguanas, and, of course, the Jared Stout Band.
