For almost as long as I have split the new release series into a two part monthly feature I have labelled the first episode as a “friends of the show” broadcast. Unfortunately, we have lost one of our friends. Shortly before we hit air, I discovered that J. Waylon Miller, leader of Friends of Cesar Romero had passed away just a few days after the release of the 50th edition of his “Doomed Babe Series”. Each and every one of these releases were fantastic, and the last few were quite possibly the best of the series. He will be missed…and lovingly remembered. Besides tracks from J. Waylon, we have new music from friends such as Numb Surprise, Vista Blue, Brad Marino, Phil Cook & The Fall Dogs, The Rockerati, and Big Stir’s The Corner Laughers. There’s a lengthy set devoted to tracks from a great new compilation, Big Hopes of Mid-America Vol. 1, that includes our pals The Silent Treatment, Cindy Lawson, and Fret Rattles, and great new albums by the likes of Sick Shooters, King Tuff, The Outfit, and Young Fresh Fellows. What’s your favorite new album? For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

We are just days away from the end of March, which means we are (finally) a quarter of the way through 2026! To celebrate this fact, this week’s episode is a look back at the best albums released over the last three months. And it’s been quite a great quarter – fantastic record by new bands such as Twisted Teens (new to me, at least), The Rockerati, Mod Lang, and so many others. Fabulous returns by Uni Boys, King Tuff, The Darts, and South Dakota’s greatest current artist, Friends of Cesar Romero. There’s great covers albums by veteran acts such as The Damned, Pink Fairies, and Patt Todd & the Rankoutsiders. Plus much much more. What’s your favorite record of the year so far? For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
"I'm a jacket man," King Tuff (aka Kyle Thomas) told me as we discussed why feeling good is important to the songwriting process. I had mentioned a writer who told me that he must wear a winter coat when he writes--even during the Washington, DC summers where he lives. This is not a complicated idea: if we're in a good headspace, we're more likely to be productive and write good songs. "I want to feel like I'm sparkling and then want the songs to feel like treasure, like candy," Thomas says. But touch is not the only sense that puts King Tuff in creative mode. Like most of us, the primitive sense of smell does it for him. "I love the smell of hose water on cement and of wood smoke in the frozen air," he says.King Tuff's latest album is Moo.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got a songwriter with a long and varied history who's somehow just now making her solo debut alongside the musician and producer who helped her make it: it's Morgan Nagler and King Tuff. You could be excused for not knowing Morgan Nagler's name; she's been on the fringes of the L.A. music scene for the past couple of decades, co-writing songs with Phoebe Bridgers (the remarkable “Kyoto”) and HAIM, among others—as well as fronting the band Whispertown. She's also had another career on-screen, from Punky Brewster to American Pie 2, but that's not relevant for today's conversation. Just this month, Nagler released the first album under her own name, and it carries the all-time great title I've Got Nothing to Lose and I'm Losing It. If you love melodic, heartfelt pop with a bit of that Laurel Canyon twang, you will find something to love on this record. Check out the song “Hurt” right here, which features a cavalcade of talented backing singers, too. Kyle Thomas has been making music under the name King Tuff for the past 20 years or so, cranking out rollicking, straightforward rockers that fit perfectly with his moniker. For his new record Moo, Thomas went back to basics after spending what he felt like was too much time cleaning things up. The result is a garage-y, thoroughly catchy set of songs that never try to overcomplicate the desire to rock. Think GBV or Ty Segall or Mikal Cronin. Check out the song “Invisible Ink” from his new album Moo right here. It's out this week. In this fun chat, Nagler and Thomas talk about the fun of writing lyrics together, Thomas' move back to the snowy woods of Vermont, and what they plan to eat on their upcoming tour together. There's also white weasels and Cadbury creme eggs, so pay close attention and enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Morgan Nagler and Kyle Thomas aka. King Tuff for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. Spring shows up and suddenly the release calendar explodes, so Matt and Sam do what we always do on Super Awesome Mix: sift through the chaos and hand you a March new music playlist that's actually worth your time. We start with U2's “Yours Eternally,” a collaboration that pulls in Ed Sheeran and Ukrainian artist Taras Topolia and frames a protest minded moment with an unexpectedly hopeful finish. From there we jump into Death Cab for Cutie's “Riptides,” a track that captures modern burnout in one chorus, then test the line between country and pop with Megan Moroney and Sheeran. The mix keeps pivoting: Charlotte Sands brings a hard rock jolt, King Tuff turns time into a hook you'll quote all week, and Blackpink proves again how effortlessly K-pop can play as mainstream pop and hip hop.On the rap and rock side, we dig into Killer Mike's soundtrack cut and the idea that honesty beats a friendly facade, then crank up The Pretty Reckless, Freddie Gibbs with DJ Paul (adult ears only), and Sevendust's “Unbreakable” for anyone who needs a little volume to get through the day. We close with Bleachers pushing back against outside noise and a Mumford and Sons collaboration with Chris Stapleton that somehow feels both simple and huge.https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/sam-march-2026-new-music/pl.u-z2pvuGxoYJ1. Yo Gabba Gabba has always had a special place in my heart. I watched the series with my sister and fell in love with Brobee, the green monster. The show featured many musicians I loved while still being whimsical and fun. It also introduced me to one of my favorite bands, The Aquabats. So getting the chance to interview the co-creators of the original and the new series, Yo Gabba Gabbaland, was an honor. I spoke with them about their philosophy for creating children's entertainment, what guides their musical guests, and the staying power of monsters. The show's second season premieres on January 30th on Apple TV, and the first season is streaming now! Be sure to check it out after listening to or watching our interview! ABOUT "YO GABBA GABBALAND!" SEASON TWO: Inspired by the original "Yo Gabba Gabba!," the vibrant new ten-episode season is led by rising star Kamryn Smith as Kammy Kam and features the original performers: Brobee (Amos Watene), Foofa (Emma Penrose), Muno (Adam Deibert), Toodee (Erin Pearce) and Plex (Christian Jacobs). Season two brings this group together with a new roster of musical guests to create dynamic performances and original songs to help kids and families uncover life lessons through music, movement and joyful discovery. Created by Emmy Award-nominated Scott Schultz and Christian Jacobs (co-creators of "Yo Gabba Gabba!"), "Yo Gabba GabbaLand" is produced in partnership and collaboration with WildBrain and Yo Gabba Gabba, LLC, co-owners of the brand. Schultz and Jacobs also serve as executive producers for Yo Gabba Gabba LLC, alongside Stephanie Betts and Josh Scherba for WildBrain. Season one of "Yo Gabba GabbaLand!" was recently nominated for a 2026 Children's & Family Emmy Award. The 'Super Music Friends' and special guests feature an all-star mix of acclaimed and Grammy winning artists including Santigold, Ziggy Marley, Sharon Van Etten, Sleigh Bells, Yola, Still Woozy, Silversun Pickups, Chicano Batman, The Aquabats! and Hemlocke Springs. Viewers will also hear fresh jingles from Freedom Fry, Turnpike Troubadours, Ginger Root, CHVRCHES, King Tuff, Mates of State, Hatchie, Sylvan Esso and Chai. In addition, the new season features returning fan favorites and new guest stars including Billy Eichner ("Bros"), Tiffany Haddish ("Girls Trip"), David Arquette ("Scream"), Brendan Hunt ("Ted Lasso"), Jaime Camil ("Jane the Virgin") and more.

Double, double, toil and trouble… This week, we put a spell on you and invite you to participate in our craft. On this 3rd week of Gothtober, we bring you witches from the world of rock n' punk n' metal. These are bands named after broomstick ridin', pointy hat wearin', green-skinned cacklin' ladies of the coven. Step up to our cauldron and have some brew! What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection, an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing. Oh, and we also want your soul.Songs this week include:All Them Witches – “Heavy / Like A Witch” from Our Mother Electricity (2012)Margarita Witch Cult – “Crawl Home To Your Coffin” from Strung Out In Hell (2025) Wytch Hazel – “The Demon Within” from V:Lamentations (2025)Two Witches – “The Angel Of Pain” from Bites (1995)Witchrider – “Wake Me Up” from Metamorph - EP (2025)Witch – “Soul Of Fire” from Witch (2006)Angel Witch – “Straight From Hell” from Frontal Assault (1986)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/https://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
"I write the most when I'm supposed to be doing something else because it tricks me into thinking that songwriting is rebellious," Meg Duffy (aka Hand Habits) told me. "It feels like I get to choose to do it." I love this quote so much. It illustrates how we sometimes have to trick ourselves into being creative. Duffy used the word "summon" a few times in our conversation regarding their songwriting process, which implies actively calling on something to be present rather than passively receiving it. This is the eternal question for the songwriter: do you wait for the muse or try to summon it?Summoning can happen everywhere for Duffy: they even did some summoning during a recent oil change. Duffy also uses walking as a way to summon. In this episode, we dig into all our collective methods of summoning. But stay for the hilarious story of how, when Duffy lived below Kyle Thomas (aka King Tuff), summoning became very, very difficult. The latest album by Hand Habits is Blue Reminder. It's incredible.
Interview with Evan Taylor Bernie Worrell Orchestra bandleader. Evan Taylor whose latest production is the posthumous Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse about this release and some of his other diverse musical endeavors. Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse is a double album concocted in fourteen cities, issued on 12” LP vinyl a day after Bernie's birthday, (April 19) on Record Store Day 2024 by Org Music in conjunction with Loantaka Records as a Record Store Day “exclusive.” As of June 28 it's also available via streaming platforms. The release will be accompanied by a bound-to-be viral video of the title track directed by Los Angeles-based dancer, Madeline Riley. Taylor has remained behind the scenes for most of his career. He worked in various capacities with Worrell, mike watt, Money Mark, Theresa Wayman (Warpaint), King Tuff, The Chapin Sisters, and Jimmy Destri of Blondie. He has made 1960's country-influenced records with members of Black Flag, participated in eclectic recording projects and performed with practically every member of Talking Heads. Evan's also released a string of critically acclaimed singles as part of the Art-Rock duo Purple Witch of Culver. Evan has never identified with the archetype of “cosmic Funkateer.” He grew up with diverse tastes that ran from The Beach Boys to Prince. As a producer his brand has been “staying off-brand.” In 2022, Taylor was presented with a unique opportunity he felt he had been preparing for his entire career. Bernie Worrell: Wave From The WOOniverse addresses the abundance of unfinished work Bernie Worrell, a prolific writer and visionary, left behind when he passed away in 2016. These compositions remained untouched for a period of decades, collecting dust on reels of two-inch analog tape. Eventually, the tapes were re-examined to analyze Bernie's nuanced and creative method. After a period of deep reflection, the Bernie Worrell estate decided it was time to complete his vision. With a series of Bernie's collaborators, contemporaries, and friends including Bootsy Collins, Sean Ono Lennon, Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads), Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Fred Schneider (B52s), Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Steve Scales, Marc Ribot, Fred Wesley (James Brown, Parliament), Marco Benevento, Stanton Moore (Galactic), Steven Bernstein, Daru Jones (Jack White), Will Calhoun (Living Colour, mike watt, Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Jared Samuel Elioseff, Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton (TV on the Radio), Binky Griptite (Dap Kings), Nick Montoya, Paul Dooely, Alecia Chakour, Smokey Hormel, Ana Becker, Eric McFadden (Sgt. Splendor), Sarah La Puerta, Michael Rueben and many more innovators his initiative was completed with dedication to preserving the integrity of the magic which makes Bernie a beloved extraordinary soul. Also included on the album is a previously unreleased Funkadelic track, “Contusion,” which showcases Bernie's masterful work with the group. https://loantaka-records.com/ . http://evantaylormusic.com.
Kyle Thomas is recording artist "KING TUFF", also known for being a member of the band "WITCH" and for his original freak folk project "FEATHERS". Jaymee feels Kyle's most recent album "SMALLTOWN STARDUST" (Sub Pop) is a masterpiece, a deeply spiritual album that isn't sneaking in religious messages or mantras; it's a call to return to the magic and simplicity of art creation, nature and friendship. Jaymee and Kyle become fast friends in this episode, which is rank with laughter, amazing album recommendations, fun stories about his friendships with Josh Tillman (Father John Misty), J. Mascis, Devendra Banhart, Tim Heidecker, and what it was like recently being joined onstage by their hero Ringo Starr. We could not be more thrilled to hang out with Sub Pop recording artist King Tuff a.k.a. Kyle Thomas to discuss his favorite childhood game "Uncle Kyle's House," which consisted of a magical world he created inside of his parents' old suitcase. Jonah and Vanessa also discuss the secret door that lead Kyle to the sewers beneath Kyle's childhood home, collectively speculate about the plot to the film "City Slickers" and discuss what other movies were seemingly on a loop during our formative years, ranging from "Haunted Honeymoon" to "Adventures in Babysitting." Finally we play a spirited round of "Back To The Present" where we lament the demise of Flinstone's Push-Ups, the Friendly's Wattamelon Roll and the time-honored tradition of free coffee at grocery stores, an experience that could only be made more transcendent if it were lamp-lit. So zip yourself up in your fave suitcase and check out this hilarious ep, and the new King Tuff album "Smalltown Stardust" out now!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
