"Rowdy" Roddy Piper's acting debut was a dandy! If you don't remember 1988's They Live, we've got you covered. From Keith David's perfect foil, to Meg Foster's piercing eyes, to Piper's iconic "kick ass and chew bubblegum line," John Carpenter's late '80s take on consumerism is a feast for cinephiles. The Chumps highlight the moment where Carpenter gives HIMSELF a shoutout; the oddest ending ever...but not for the reasons you think; and Corrye's wild tale of renting this film as a youngster - and why he quickly returned it immediately after watching!
What a week! AMC avoids bankruptcy with the help of meme stock traders, Connor watched a new movie on HBO Max that even three Oscar winning actors couldn't save, and most importantly the boys talk about the John Carpenter classic, They Live. *The IMDB description for The Little Things has been updated :( The old description was so much better. All Out of Bubblegum - John Carpenter Rings The Alarm - 1988's They Live On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos Mr. Chavez & I sit down to talk one of the great B-Movie, Sci-Fi Classics, John Carpenter's They Live (1988). Science Fiction has traditionally been a genre that comments on the current state of society and culture. Carpenter's depiction of an alien invasion and the subsequent enslavement of the human race, is one of the greatest criticisms of 1980s Reagan Era Economics and the rise of Yuppie culture. With a surprisingly accomplished performance from Wrestling Icon "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as John Nada - an "Everyman" of the Working Poor - and a great supporting performance from Keith David, this is an exceptional film that warned us of the dangers of the destruction of the Middle Class. Take a listen as we - once again - draw comparisons between art, culture, and the ugliness of politics. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks!

John Carpenter's "They Live" is a silly film that attempts to attack real social issues. The concept, a drifter by the name of Nada finds himself in the middle of a city that is completely overthrown by aliens. Thing is, he's the only one who can see them. How you ask? Well with a very special pair of sunglasses of course! When Nada finds them he can see the world for what it truly is. Billboards, magazines and even the food in your own grocery stores show what the intentions of the people who make them truly are. A John Carpenter social satire on the Ronald Regan era. Oh, and also a lot of gun shooting, exceptionally choreographed fight scenes and some truly poetic 1980's one-liners. Now my friends, who is ready to chew bubblegum and kick some ass?
As you all no, we are no strangers to King here on the FMB and this week is a doozey. Nick and Tobias can hardly stifle their excitement as they fanboy over Mike Flanagan's biggest movie yet! 'come play with us' as we talk all things The Shining and Doctor Sleep. Highlights include Magellan drooling over Rose The Hat, Chaboi has his knowledge of release dates tested again and we define the lines between Horror and Thriller! Next week - John Carpenter's They Live
It’s difficult to talk social commentary in film without looking directly at John Carpenter. 1989’s THEY LIVE! came along intent on making a point about classism and the lack of bubblegum in the world. Obey, Download, Consume
Uncle Ben and Hollywood Steve are back this week to take down the system! ... By talking about a movie! John Carpenter's They Live was once a silly little scifi gem from the late 80s. But today it is a horrific depiction of our potential future as a species. We discuss such hard-hitting topics as professional wrestling, the beginning of the end of John Carpenter's directing career, and capitalism. Now put on these glasses or start eating that trash can! This was a crazy episode as we watched and discussed 1988's THEY LIVE! We touch upon how timely this film is for 2019, the ultimate henchman who appears in it, the fight scene, and other movie props that show up in this film that were used in others! Conform. Sleep. OBEY.
In this episode, I draw a parallel with one of my favorite cult movies, John Carpenter's "They Live." Then you too will have glasses with which to see who understands the true nature of Magic.

Episode two! Ben recommended John Carpenter's "They Live" starring Rowdy Roddy Piper, Joey really tells us what he thinks of this one. After that, the guys talk Wes Anderson films, listing them from best to least best (there are no bad Anderson films). A Wes Anderson trailer is watched and a video game is recommended! That's right, they move away from movies for a bit, but don't worry they will loop back around to them soon enough. Get into it!
Adam and Jared chew bubble gum and talk in depth about John Carpenter's They Live. Roddy Piper's hair is discussed, along with the man's ability to take repeated knee strikes to the groin. We also debate the merits of the John Carpenter films post They Live.

Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan have returned again to talk about the ills of capitalism. Jodie Foster's new film Money Monster puts George Clooney in a hostage situation alongside his producer, played by Julia Roberts. We discuss the film's thriller qualities and why its inability to be believable might not actually be a bad thing. Before that, we talk about some new Blu-ray releases, including Deadpool (which we did a podcast on and Dylan reviewed), as well as this week's Criterion title. There is also some Cannes discussion as we think about what films we are most excited to see when they're released stateside. A lot of news is covered at the beginning but eventually we do talk about two other movies we saw this week. Dylan revisited John Carpenter's They Live and Chris finally saw Blade Runner in the form of Blade Runner: The Final Cut. Next week we will be reviewing Shane Black's new film, The Nice Guys, starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
