What if the people around you – your coworkers, neighbors, even your closest friends – aren't human at all, but something else hiding in plain sight?IN THIS EPISODE: Have you ever felt like something was off about someone you met? What if the truth was more bizarre than you could imagine - that aliens walk secretly among us, perfectly disguised? (Mimic In The Mirror) *** The short story “Eight O'Clock In The Morning” by Ray Nelson – the inspiration for the movie “They Live!” *** Left-handedness: once a mark of the devil, now a unique trait celebrated across the globe. From the Salem Witch Trials to modern-day challenges with spiral notebooks, left-handers have been forced to navigate a world designed for righties, despite the historical stigmas, surprising advantages, and the evolving recognition of left-handers in combat, culture, and commerce. (Left-Handers Are In League With The Devil) *** In the shadow of Switzerland's majestic Eiger mountain, 29-year-old Aidan Roche vanished without a trace during a solo hiking trip. Despite an unlocked camper-van and one last eerie messages sent from the trail, his disappearance remained shrouded in mystery. Months later, a grim discovery brought more questions than answers. (The Disappearance of Aidan Roche) *** In the summer of 1948, a series of inexplicable fires ravaged the Willey farm near Macomb, Illinois, destroying the family's home and barns. Despite the efforts of local authorities and the U.S. Air Force, no logical explanation could be found for the hundreds of mysterious blazes that seemed to start spontaneously. At the center of this baffling case was 13-year-old Wanet McNeil, whose alleged confession to arson left many unconvinced. Was Wanet truly responsible? Could she have been starting the fires with her mind? (The Macomb Firestarter) *** In 1991, 63-year-old Vasile Gorgos left his home in Romania to visit a cattle market and never returned, leaving his family to believe he had met a tragic fate. But 30 years later, Vasile shocked everyone when he mysteriously reappeared, wearing the same clothes as the day he vanished and carrying an unused train ticket from 1991 in his pocket. With no memory of where he'd been for three decades, Vasile's strange case has left people wondering if his disappearance could be tied to supernatural phenomena like portals, alien abduction, or shifts in time and space itself.

This was an interview recorded on June 2nd. There has been some delays in getting this episode uploaded. It is still relevant and necessary. Gun violence is a major issue facing America. Our kids are learning how to hide from active shooters in schools, kids in the inner city are walking on different sides of the street to avoid altercations, and much more. Our children are victims even if they aren't near the shooter. They wonder if their school is next, their friend is next, or their family is next. It's traumatizing and unfair. So, how do we as parents address it? How do we bring comfort? How do we help them understand their value and the value they bring to others? In this conversation, I am joined by Ray Nelson, Director of Outreach and Soul Care at The House D.C. in Washington, D.C. This is a hard conversation, but necessary. I hope you can engage and listen to what is said. This is not political. This is just a focus on how to address the issue with our children and how to be a safe space. MUSIC by iEarn FIST. Ray Nelson Advocacy and IEP Coaching Bio I approach advocacy and IEP coaching a little differently. Part of that is my background, which is in sales and finance. I come from a work culture designed to solve problems rather than minimize them. That means I focus more on the child and less on the conflict, which increases my success rate with schools and IEP teams. By keeping focus on the child, many times I am able to sidestep personality clashes and create a solid plan for my clients. Making education better and more accessible is my goal for every client, every meeting, and every IEP team. As a volunteer advocate for many years, I started my business in 2016 to help more children. Yes, this is a big action film starring a wrestler who can see aliens when he puts on sunglasses. But the social commentary punches just as hard as Roddy Piper. The film wasn't a big hit, but has since become a huge cult film. The alien's simple black and white brainwashing ads are still used in political satire to this day. The Crew discusses. The audio track is garbage. Sorry but Jim's an old blind guy so it was really a goddamn miracle we recorded anything at all. Janky sound was inevitable. And, as we address almost immediately, perfect for the subject matter: the documentary (https://twitter.com/R_Roddy_Piper/status/383693269068050432) They Live. Anyway. There's a real murderer's row of talent on hand to discuss the rich, insurrectionary art of They Live. Two of my favorite writers and people join me to celebrate and dissect John Carpenter's masterwork: Slackjaw (http://www.electronpress.com/EPexec/Slackjaw.html) columnist Jim Knipfel (http://www.jimknipfel.com/) and investigative journalist Alexander Zaitchik (https://www.zaitchik.com/). When it was released in 1988, They Live was a reaction to Ronald Reagan's America but, as Jim says, "They Live never goes away." We talk about the cultural and historical forces that made _They Live _ inevitable and the diverging ideological interpretations of the movie that have sprung up since. Jim is a force of nature. Alex makes sharp observations. I drop a minor bombshell about "Rowdy" Roddy Piper being a teensy bit reckless about racial slurs in a decades-old interview. Hope his estate doesn't sue. Maybe I can convince them to put on these special sunglasses they'll see things my way. Michael Tanner joins us this week to review 1988's They Live. John Carpenter wrote and directed this cult classic. They Live is based on Ray Nelson's short story, “Eight O'Clock in the Morning”. It stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster. The movie debuted #1 in North America in its first week, but it received mostly negative reviews. The film was heavily criticized for its social commentary, but later enjoyed a cult following. This seems to be a pattern with early John Carpenter films. Most notably, the movie has entered pop-culture and has influenced street art. “Nada, a wanderer without meaning in his life, discovers a pair of sunglasses capable of showing the world the way it truly is. Nada notices that both the media and the government are comprised of subliminal messages meant to keep the population subdued. He discovers that most of the social elite are skull-faced aliens bent on world domination. With this shocking discovery, Nada fights to free humanity from the mind-controlling aliens.” Michael Tanner Michael Tanner is a co-creator of “Junior Braves of the Apocalypse” along with co-host Greg Smith.

Welcome to the latest episode of Watch.Read.Listen. Duane and David decide to tackle John Carpenter's classic film from 1988 They Live, as well as discuss the material from which it was adapted, Ray Nelson's 1963 short story Eight O'Clock In The Morning. Warning: This is a rambling discussion, in which other films are brought up, and the current state of politics are discussed. It was inevitable. Also, if you can make it to the end, you can have a taste of the Lynchian nature of Dalton Coble-Watson's Knock Knock jokes. In October, we held our first annual, Mirror Images Conference. Educators, parents, and students alike all came together to address one of the major issues plaguing our communities: functional illiteracy. We heard from Dr. John Hodge, Dr. Trenace Richardson, Ray Nelson, Talaya Simpson, Darren Reed, Bridget Adams, Dejone Fowler, and BtheMovement. Through activities, panel discussions, entertainment, and break-out sessions, community members were able to have open dialogue with educators concerning perceived challenges, cultural norms and practices that directly impact the learning process. Our annual Mirror Images Conference provides: professional development for educators and administrators who are tasked with ensuring increased student outcomes; a training ground for parents who serve as determining factors in student performance; and a platform for students who are the recipients of the educational services provided.
