1996's The Long Kiss Goodnight is a Shane Black screenplay on the Renny Harlin luge. What is the deal? Is it a spiritual successor to The Last Boy Scout? What is going on? I don't know. I've been sick for months at this point. I thought I was better well after recording but I can feel the sinus infection coming on. Everything all the time.

Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz interviews Shane Black, one of Hollywood's highest-paid screenwriters, who redefined action films with witty dialogue, dark humor, and unforgettable characters. From Lethal Weapon to The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Iron Man 3, Shane discusses his journey from a self-described "oddball" to a filmmaking powerhouse.Pittsburgh Roots and Early Influences (02:55)Born in Pittsburgh, Black shares how his father's printing business and bookshelf of detective novels sparked his love for "tough guy literature" that would later influence his writing style.Overcoming Personal Struggles (08:00)Black candidly discusses his battles with OCD and alcoholism. He reveals how he transformed these challenges into creative strengths and encourages others to "just lean into being weird."The Psychology Behind His Characters (12:04)Black explains how his characters often represent different aspects of his own psychology. He emphasizes that truly compelling writing comes from creating characters with authentic emotional DNA that resonates with the writer's own experiences. The Creation of Lethal Weapon (15:32)Black describes Lethal Weapon as "an urban western" with Mel Gibson's character representing "a Frankenstein kept in a cage" - a Vietnam veteran reviled by society but needed when violence intrudes on everyday life.Working with Hollywood Icons (27:13)Black shares insights about working with legends like Richard Donner, Tony Scott, Joel Silver, and Robert Downey Jr.From Writer to Director (40:06)Black explains his transition to directing to have more creative control over his work. Black adds that directing allows him to move beyond returning to the blank page and into a more collaborative aspect of filmmaking.Latest Project: Play Dirty (52:01)Black discusses working with Mark Wahlberg, and adapting Donald Westlake's Parker series for Amazon, calling Westlake "the king" among mystery writers and explaining his lifelong admiration for these stories he first read at age 12.Throughout the conversation, Black offers a masterclass on screenwriting in Hollywood. Black and Kevin Goetz discover numerous personal connections, creating an unusually intimate portrait of a filmmaker who transformed Hollywood's action genre. His journey from a bookish child to acclaimed filmmaker serves as proof that leaning into one's unique perspective can lead to extraordinary creative achievements. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review or connect on social media. With a script by a hot shot scriptwriter named Shane Black, Donner set off to turn Lethal Weapon into a slam bang stand alone film. We know how that turned out. But before we get to the sequels, we have to cover the 1987 original. Casting already covered by us in Mad Mad Mel Gibson and dramatic actor Danny Glover, Donner had to see the actors' chemistry alone was going to make for a good time at the movies. Or did it? Listen to Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they go over the ways all of them discovered this franchise, before dissecting one of the 80s most beloved action films. Do all of them agree? Come on, you know us by now.

Which one of you two looks most like a football movie? This week, we welcome Ali back to the show to discuss a couple of sports-related flicks: The Last Boy Scout (1991) directed by Tony Scott and The Last Match (1990), directed by Fabrizio de Angelis. Get ready for some pop psychoanalysis of Shane Black, a close examination of the early 90's Bruce Willis screen persona, and just how weird it got for aging Hollywood stars in the dregs of Italian exploitation fare around the same time. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for The Last Boy Scout by skipping ahead to the 1:09:36 mark, and for The Last Match by skipping ahead to 1:51:59. This week's important questions: Is RDj the only actor that can make this kind of smarm work? How do we feel about Val Kilmer's.... situation in this movie?  Michelle Monaghan; girl next door or troublesome dame? -and-  What do you want for Christmas?

In this final podcast of 2024 we conclude the December Shane Black Christmas series with a conversation about the Renny Harlin-directed The Long Kiss Goodnight. Over the course of our chat you will hear us try to make sense of the action movie landscape in 1996 and how The Long Kiss Goodnight fit or didn't fit into the changing times, Shane Black's crassness and its interplay with Harlin's innate directorial trashiness, the way Harlin needed a win after he quite literally brought down a studio and whether Geena Davis had what it takes to join the ranks of powerful female leads of the 80s and 90s. We also talk about Sam Jackson's zingers, Geena Davis' chopping skills and just how adept she was at putting on ice skates while pursuing a car. Tune in and enjoy! Ladies and gentleman, pray forgive Dave in his capacity as host this week: His rhythm was off, as he was interrupted during the Patreon segment by a restless 9-year-old. (Speaking of Patreon, we cover the Shane Black-written, Geena Davis-starring THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT. It's a fun conversation!) This week we all watched THE BRUTALIST (3:44), Brady Corbet's post-WWII epic featuring Adrien Brody as a talented architect trying to thrive in the United States while dealing with rampant antisemitism (he's a Hungarian Jew), the process of getting his wife and niece to the United States (they're stuck in Budapest), and designing and building a giant multiuse project for garbage human Guy Pearce (his character, not Guy Pearce the person, whom we've heard is lovely). We have lots to say about this complex, multilayered, truly epic film, including whether it's the best picture of the year, like many critics contend.  Then we move onto Robert Eggers' latest: His version of NOSFERATU (40:14), inspired by F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic (which was lifted from Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula"). It looks good. Its actors are committed. Lily-Rose Depp is fantastic. But is the horror movie worth watching? Does Dave want to throw Nicholas Hoult into a windowless room and toss away the key? We had three very different opinions.

Perennial Christmas classic Lethal Weapon redefined the buddy cop genre with its festive setting, unique characters and the undisputed chemistry between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Shane Black's screenplay combined humour and action and made it a benchmark for future action films, and Richard Donner's direction brought a skilled touch to the film's pacing and storytelling. Unlike other buddy cop or action movies of the 80s, it also explores deep themes of depression, grief, and trauma, particularly through Riggs's character. Lethal Weapon broke new ground by incorporating themes of emotional vulnerability in its portrayal of masculinity. The cultural impact of Lethal Weapon is also prevalent, particularly how it addresses themes of race and the changing portrayal of law enforcement in cinema. The narrative resonates differently in today's context, especially regarding ongoing discussions about police conduct and racial dynamics in America. Lethal Weapon isn't just as a successful action film, but as a poignant commentary on friendship, trauma, and societal issues, as well as the power of found family - even if the dinner's aren't all that great... We'll start things with a 90s cult flick that might have slipped under your radar: The Long Kiss Goodnight, starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. This spy action-comedy had top level stars, a premium screenwriter (Shane Black, who created the Lethal Weapon series), a veteran director (Renny Harlin, of Die Hard 2 fame), and yet it was a box office disappointment. Why was that? Has it gained a cult following since then? Most importantly: How is it as a Christmas movie?Find out the answers to all of those and more on this week's CInemavino!
