383 Why Your RNAV Glide Path Won't Capture—and How to Fix It + GA News

Max tackles a common frustration among pilots: why RNAV (GPS) glide paths sometimes fail to couple with the autopilot. A recent Facebook post from a pilot flying a Cirrus SR22T triggered the discussion, as the poster encountered exactly this problem during an LPV approach, mistakenly attributing it to an expired database. Max explains that the real culprit was a fundamental misunderstanding of RNAV approach procedures. Unlike an ILS glide slope, which is a physical radio beam transmitted from ground equipment, an RNAV glide path is a computed construct generated by the aircraft's GPS navigator. It only becomes “real” for the autopilot to couple to when flown properly, following all step-down altitudes as published. A key indicator is the glide path diamond: it remains hollow and white until the aircraft crosses the fix before the Final Approach Fix (FAF), at which point it turns solid magenta, signaling that the autopilot can engage. Max emphasizes that this behavior contrasts with ILS approaches, where pilots sometimes get away with intercepting the glide slope from above. Doing so on RNAV approaches, however, won't work because the computed glide path isn't extended infinitely; it's activated only within a defined segment of the approach. To verify this, Max conducted simulator flights on multiple RNAV approaches. He discovered a consistent pattern: the glide path diamond always turned magenta while crossing the fix immediately before the FAF—not at a set distance before or after a particular waypoint. This nuance is crucial for ensuring autopilot capture and a stabilized approach. Drawing a parallel to AIM 5-4-5b, Max reinforces that both ILS and RNAV approaches are designed to be intercepted at specific altitudes. Deviating from these procedures risks automation surprises, or worse, capturing false glide slopes in the case of ILS. He recalls the Air India Express Flight 812 crash as a tragic example of why proper interception altitudes matter. The key takeaway is a simple formula for reliably flying RNAV approaches: descend to each step-down fix altitude, and ensure you're at the target altitude when crossing the fix before the FAF. When done correctly, the glide path diamond will turn magenta, allowing the autopilot to capture it and guide the descent. Max's detailed breakdown underscores why relying on social media for technical advice can be misleading. Instead, pilots should seek information from authoritative sources and understand the underlying principles behind automation behavior. By following published procedures and recognizing cues like the hollow versus solid glide path diamond, pilots can avoid surprises and maintain safe, stable approaches. Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This episode, we're stepping into the eerie and unsettling world of The Mist (2007), a harrowing adaptation of Stephen King's novella directed by Frank Darabont. Known for adapting King's works with finesse (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), Darabont delivers a tense, claustrophobic horror film that dives deep into human nature when fear and desperation take hold.Setting the Scene: Monsters in the MistThe story begins in the small town of Bridgton, Maine, where a violent storm causes a power outage. Artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son Billy (Nathan Gamble) venture into town for supplies, along with their neighbour Brent Norton (Andre Braugher). As a mysterious mist rolls in, trapping them and other townspeople in a supermarket, it becomes clear that terrifying, deadly creatures lurk in the fog.But the true horror emerges not from the creatures outside but from the growing paranoia, fear, and fanaticism inside the store. The group splinters as Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a religious zealot, gains followers by declaring the mist an act of divine retribution. Tensions rise, and survival becomes as much about navigating human threats as it is about avoiding the nightmarish creatures. Why It Stands OutPsychological Horror Over Monsters: The Mist isn't just about creepy creatures—it's a study of how fear can turn people against each other. The tension is unrelenting, and the real danger becomes the people succumbing to fear and fanaticism. That Ending: The gut-wrenching, bleak finale remains one of the most divisive and shocking in horror film history. Deviating from King's original ending, Darabont delivers a twist so nihilistic it haunts viewers long after the credits roll.Powerful Performances: Thomas Jane shines as a desperate father trying to protect his son, while Marcia Gay Harden's Mrs. Carmody is an unsettling portrayal of religious extremism. The supporting cast, including Toby Jones and William Sadler, bring depth and authenticity to their roles.Atmosphere and Tension: The supermarket setting is a perfect microcosm of societal collapse. Claustrophobic, tense, and rife with dread, the film captures the mounting hysteria and desperation.A Dad's TakeThe Mist is a great watch for horror fans, but it's not just about monsters. It's a disturbing exploration of human nature, moral dilemmas, and the choices we make when all hope seems lost. It's a reminder that sometimes, the scariest monsters are the ones inside us.Final ThoughtsFrank Darabont's The Mist is a horror film that lingers long after viewing. It's terrifying, tragic, and thought-provoking, delivering a uniquely unsettling experience. For dads who appreciate psychological horror and impactful storytelling, it's a must-watch—just don't expect a happy ending. So, join us as we venture into the mist, dissecting the film's themes, unforgettable moments, and that notorious ending. Church bans non-alcoholic wine and gluten-free bread from holy communion - NewsBreakNewsBreak, By George Lithgow, on February 9, 2025https://www.newsbreak.com/share/3798407634101-church-bans-non-alcoholic-wine-and-gluten-free-bread-from-holy-communionThe Church of England has reaffirmed a long-standing doctrinal stance that only wheat-based bread and fermented grape juice—meaning traditional wine—are valid for Holy Communion. This ruling explicitly excludes non-alcoholic wine and gluten-free bread, creating accessibility issues for those with celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or individuals who abstain from alcohol for health, religious, or personal reasons. While the church recognizes the challenges this presents, it maintains that the theological integrity of the sacrament requires adherence to these specific elements. This decision is grounded in traditional Christian theology, which emphasizes the symbolic nature of the Eucharist. According to the Church of England, the bread used must be wheat-based, as it represents the body of Christ, just as it was at the Last Supper. Similarly, fermented grape wine is considered essential, as it aligns with biblical accounts of Christ's words and actions. Deviating from these elements, the church argues, could compromise the sacrament's sacred nature. For individuals with gluten intolerance or celiac disease, this presents a significant barrier to fully participating in the central rite of Christian worship. While some branches of Christianity have made accommodations by offering low-gluten alternatives, the Church of England holds firm on the necessity of wheat content in the bread. The ruling suggests that those unable to consume gluten should receive only the wine, a partial participation that some may find exclusionary. The refusal to allow non-alcoholic wine similarly impacts those who abstain from alcohol for health or personal reasons. Many Christian denominations, particularly in the Protestant tradition, have adopted grape juice as an alternative to accommodate recovering alcoholics and others who avoid alcohol.Critics argue that this ruling reflects an outdated rigidity that prioritizes dogma over inclusivity. They contend that maintaining the spirit of the Eucharist—sharing in the body and blood of Christ—should take precedence over strict adherence to specific physical ingredients. This decision highlights the broader tension within religious institutions between tradition and modern accommodation. The Church of England has struggled in recent years with issues of inclusivity, and this ruling adds another layer of debate over how to balance doctrine with accessibility. While some parishioners may see this as a reaffirmation of sacred tradition, others may view it as an unnecessary obstacle that alienates members of the faith. The Non-Prophets, Episode 24.7.4 featuring Scott Dickie, Stephen Harder, Helen Greene and The Ejector SeatBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

In this episode of ThimbleberryU, Jon “JAG” Gay and Amy Walls tackle one of the biggest fears for retirees: running out of money before they die. They delve into the critical topic of deciding from which accounts to draw money in retirement, illustrating the profound impact these decisions can have on one's financial stability.Amy emphasizes that this concern often leads people to adopt an "ostrich" mentality, where they bury their heads in the sand to avoid facing daunting financial decisions. Jon adds that this behavior is a form of fight or flight, driven by fear and unfamiliarity. They agree that simply winging it can be a costly mistake. We introduce a case study to illustrate these points. They discuss a hypothetical couple, both aged 60, with different types of savings: $40,000 in cash, $600,000 in taxable investments, $2 million in IRAs, and $200,000 in Roth accounts. They compare the financial outcomes of spending $85,000 versus $100,000 annually in retirement. For $85,000 in annual spending, the optimal strategy involves withdrawing 45% from taxable accounts and 55% from IRAs. For $100,000, the best approach shifts to 60% from taxable accounts and 40% from IRAs. Deviating from these strategies, even slightly, can significantly impact financial outcomes. Using the $85,000 strategy for $100,000 in spending could result in $400,000 less in available funds by age 95.Using the $100,000 strategy for $85,000 in spending could lead to $300,000 less. The consequences are even more dramatic when retirees choose to withdraw 100% from either taxable accounts or IRAs. Drawing solely from taxable accounts until depletion could result in $740,000 less by age 95. Withdrawing entirely from IRAs could lead to $1.5 million less.We underscore the importance of dynamic financial planning, which involves regular reassessment of one's strategy to adapt to changing circumstances and ensure efficiency. Amy concludes by stressing that thoughtful distribution strategies are essential not only for maintaining financial stability but also for achieving personal goals, whether it's enjoying life, covering unexpected expenses, or leaving a legacy. For listeners seeking personalized advice, Amy encourages reaching out to Thimbleberry Financial for guidance tailored to individual circumstances. Trump Accuses Special Counsel of Manipulating 2024 Electoral Campaign

Following a unique course of action by Special Counsel Jack Smith, Former President Donald Trump expressed strong disapproval. Deviating from traditional procedure, Smith petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on the applicability of presidential immunity in a case surrounding the 2020 election. This move sparked reactions from the ex-president, who condemned Smith's actions in a public statement on Truth Social. The crux of the matter falls on Smith's decision to sidestep the federal appeals court and directly approach the nation's highest authority to determine whether the former president can exercise total immunity from federal prosecution. This relates to alleged illicit efforts to alter the outcomes of the previous election while he was in office. Trump took to the social forum on Wednesday, criticizing Smith. He described him as a ‘maladjusted' prosecutor, a 'Biden appointee' who has a history of overstepping boundaries and rushing important legal issues, such as the question of Presidential Immunity. Trump argued that such immunity is elemental to American democracy and thus its applicability should be a given. In the spotlight is the federal trial set to commence in March of 2024. In Smith's official documents, there is significant emphasis on the necessity of speedy and decisive action by the Supreme Court on the issue regarding immunity. The timing of the federal trial, in which Trump has staunchly proclaimed his innocence by pleading not guilty on four counts, is also a matter of keen interest for the former president. Trump staunchly maintains his innocence and has long contended that any criminal investigations against him are politically motivated attempts to destabilize his possible 2024 run. He accuses Smith of trying to leverage the Supreme Court to hinder his potential candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Andrew Sheets: November's Early Holiday Gift to Investors

The market rally of the last few weeks is based on strong economic data, suggesting that the U.S. and Europe remain on track for a “soft landing.” ----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Andrew Sheets, Global Head of Corporate Credit Research for Morgan Stanley. Along with my colleagues bringing you a variety of perspectives, I'll be talking about trends across the global investment landscape and how we put those ideas together. It's Friday, December 1st at 2 p.m. in London. November 2023 is now in the history books. It was outstanding. US bonds rose 4.5%, the best month since 1985. Global stocks rose 9%, the best month in three years. Spreads on an investment grade and high yield bonds tightened significantly. With the exception of commodities and Chinese stocks, which both struggled, November was an early holiday gift to investors of many stripes. While the size of the rally in November was unusual, the direction didn't just spring from thin air. Generally speaking, economic data in November strongly endorsed the idea of a soft landing. Soft landing, where inflation falls without a sharp drop in economic activity are historically rare. But they are Morgan Stanley's economic forecast for the year ahead. And in November, investors unwrapped data suggesting the story remains on track. In the US, core consumer price inflation declined more than expected. Core PCE inflation, a slightly different measure that the Federal Reserve prefers, has fallen down to an annualized pace of just 2.5% over the last six months. Gas prices are down 16% since the summer, rental inflation has stalled and the U.S. auto production is normalizing, improving the trend in three big drivers of the higher inflation we've seen over the last two years. Go back 12 months and most forecasts, including our own, assume that lower inflation would be the result of higher interest rates driving a slowdown in growth. But the economy has been good. Over the last 12 months, the U.S. economy has grown 3%, .5% better than the average since 1990. The story in Europe is a little different from the one in America, but it still rhymes. In Europe, recent inflation data has also come in lower than expected. While economic data has been somewhat weaker. Still, we see signs that the worst of Europe's economic growth will be confined to 2023 and continue to forecast the weakest growth right now, with somewhat better European growth in 2024. Why does this matter? While the returns of November were unusual and unlikely to repeat, it's a good reminder not to overcomplicate things. Good data, by which we mean lower inflation and reasonable growth, is a good outcome that markets will reward, and remains the Morgan Stanley economic base case. Deviating on either variable is a risk, especially for an asset class like credit. Following the data and keeping an open mind, remains important. Thanks for listening. Welcome to Revive! In this powerful sermon, we learn of the name El Shaddai—the all-sufficient one, the provider of all our needs. We begin with a reflection of Genesis, where God establishes His first covenant with Abram. The covenant, symbolized by cutting, signifies a profound commitment that requires sacrifice. Unlike modern, fickle promises, a covenant is a matter of life and death. Find out more about God's pruning work in our lives. Abiding in Him is the key, as without Him, we can do nothing. Deviating from the covenant leads to entitlement, but the new covenant enables us to cut away distractions from God's better plan. El Shaddai, the one who answers to those in covenant with Him, doesn't yield to the entitled. When God initiates a cut, it's because He has something better in store. The call to be cut comes with the assurance of abundant grace on the other side. God desires all of you, demanding the removal of sin, unrighteousness, and fear. While the process may be painful, the grace available is more than sufficient. We need to cut our spiritual umbilical cords and the things that let us stay stuck in our comfort, nourished by the wrong sources and unable to grow. Experience the profound truth that God's cutting is not punitive but redemptive, ushering in a better plan and a life filled with grace. Embrace the journey of being cut by El Shaddai, the all-sufficient one who holds all that you need. Be Blessed!

In a whirlwind of time-bending intrigue, "Loki" Season 2 Episode 1, titled "Ouroboros," picks up from where we left off.Season 1 saw Loki's escape from Avengers custody via the Tesseract, only to land in the clutches of the TVA (Time Variant Authority), tasked with safeguarding the sacred timeline. Deviating from this timeline earns the title of "variant," and Loki, captured by Hunter B-15, is no exception. With timeline resets and memory wipes, the TVA keeps the sacred timeline intact, all while revealing a startling truth - its employees are themselves variants, their lives stolen and memories erased. The revelation leads to a showdown with He Who Remains, a being of immense power, offering Loki and Sylvie a choice that would disrupt the timeline in catastrophic ways. Sylvie makes her choice, creating a multiverse of branching timelines.Returning to the TVA, Loki faces a time-slipping conundrum, while Mobius seeks a "Loki Who Remains" to aid in a crucial mission. In "Ouroboros," we meet O.B., portrayed by Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan, who's been part of Repairs and Advancement for centuries. The Temporal Aura Extractor takes center stage, with Mobius in a race against time. Meanwhile, Loki must prune himself from every thread of time and space, risking a bizarre fate.Branch overload looms as radiation emanates from timeline branches, and Loki time-slips into the past, embarking on a quest for a timestick. General Dox emerges, with Hunter B-15 as her right hand, and Judge Gamble orders a halt to timeline pruning, setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown. The post-credit scene takes us to Sylvie in 1982 Broxton, Oklahoma, at a McDonald's, seeking to reconnect with a life she never had.Amid this time-twisting chaos, the symbolism of the Ouroboros, representing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, comes to the fore.OUR SOCIALS:We are featured on STARWARS.com! Today we were delighted to host Dr. Pippa Malmgren. Pippa is an experienced economist, author, and speaker, served as an advisor to President George W. Bush, and has advised the British Cabinet and the Cabinets of several Asian nations on economic policy. She has held several significant positions throughout her career including Senior Advisor to Monaco Foundry and Avonhurst, Board Member at Premios Verdes, former Managing Director at Bankers Trust, and the author of several award-winning books. She is a founder and co-founder of tech ventures spanning robotics, cleantech, space, and more. We were thrilled to get Pippa's perspective on current global economic trends and geopolitical events. Our discussion explored a range of topics starting with Pippa's experience in the White House during 9/11 and her team's challenging task of re-creating a market for US Treasuries and re-opening the NYSE. Pippa shares her outlook on today's stress-filled geopolitical environment, the unique and often misunderstood relationship between the US and China, and why Pippa thinks the world is at a peak in geopolitical tension (and trending down from here). We discuss the potential for war between China and Taiwan, what surprises might happen there, geopolitics in Latin America including Chinese and Russian influence in the area, and the possibilities for the often-dismissed potential of space-based solar power. We then explore leadership and leaders around the world, Pippa's latest book “The Infinite Leader,” autocracy vs. democracy, Europe's seat at the table geopolitically, AI's potential and the importance of the human element and creativity, and more. We ended with Pippa's thoughts on the current culture at universities and her advice to all of us to shift from a “scarcity mindset” to the “possibility of abundance.” We look forward to continuing to follow Pippa's work on SubStack (linked here) and can't thank her enough for sharing her geopolitical wisdom, for stimulating our thinking, and for encouraging all of us to think outside our own boxes. Mike Bradley kicked us off by highlighting this week's FOMC meeting, noting that consensus was placing near zero odds for a rate hike at this meeting but roughly 50% odds of a rate hike at the next FOMC meeting. From a commodities standpoint, he highlighted that Brent and WTI prices surpassed $95/bbl. and $$92/bbl. respectively. He also noted that there was an interesting back and forth last week between the IEA (Financial Times Op-Ed from Fatih Birol linked here) and OPEC (statement linked here) regarding peak oil demand prior to 2030. He ended by highlighting that energy equities have lagged the surge in crude oil price, mostly because equity investors need to see how crude oil price trades when Saudi begins pushing crude barrels back into the market before there can be energy equity multiple expansion. Jeff Tillery shared a few observations of the public energy markets over the past 8-9 months, noting an overall trend towards normalcy in the energy sector. We greatly enjoyed the conversation with Pippa and hope you find it as interesting as we did. Thanks to you all!

A few weeks ago, I saw Taylor Swift perform, and I was blown away. I am not a huge fan; I like her music on the radio, but I've never bought or downloaded and album. I only know the songs on the radio, but it was the most inspiring performance I've ever seen. Not just because she's a great entertainer. Her storytelling and unapologetically authentic love for what she does made me want to be better at what I do. And I wanted to go for it! She makes people believe in themselves, and that's what I want to do, too. So, in this week's episode of Reflect Forward: Advice From a CEO, I share the Taylor Swift experience and why we should all feel empowered to go after our dreams and create the life we want for ourselves. Many people are afraid to go after their dreams. Why? Simple. Fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of judgment. We live in a society where the norm is often mistaken as the ‘right way.' Deviating from it, chasing something unconventional can invite criticism, uncertainty, and perceived risk. And that, my friends, can be daunting. Overcoming this fear and gaining the self-confidence to chase our dreams begins with understanding our worth and potential. Your dreams are valid, your ambitions are worthy, and you can achieve greatness. To nurture self-confidence, take small steps towards your goals and celebrate each small victory. Embrace the journey, as every step you take matters. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Failure is scary, right? Let's reframe how we see it. It isn't the end of the road; it's a steppingstone, a learning opportunity. The most successful people you know didn't get there without failing numerous times. Failure is not a stop sign. It's a detour or a scenic route on your journey toward your dream. How do we stop caring about what other people think as we chase our dreams? Let's begin by accepting that we cannot please everyone, and remember, you're not chasing your dream for them. You're doing it for you. You are the author of your life's story, so why let someone else hold the pen? When it comes to criticism, learn to filter. Constructive criticism can be a valuable tool for growth, but those voices who only criticize without adding value need to be turned down, if not completely muted. Going after your dreams requires courage, resilience, and a certain level of stubbornness. Embrace your fears, build self-confidence, learn from your failures, and don't let others dictate your path. The road to your dreams might be long and winding, but oh, is it worth it! Question of the Week “What are you reading right now?” I am reading Sober Curious by Ruth Warrington. Why? Because I have been on a mission to drink less, I like reading what they call “quit lit.” Ruth's story is inspiring, and the book is filled with all kinds of ways to help you curb your drinking habits. I'm starting a 100-day challenge using her workbook. Since I've consciously decided to curb my alcohol consumption, I've started to reap remarkable benefits. I feel more energetic and clear-headed, like I've finally kicked away a fog that I didn't even know was clouding my day-to-day life. My sleep quality has improved dramatically, and I love my mornings even more! I now have this overall sense of health – my skin looks better, my workouts are more efficient, and even my mood seems to have taken a positive turn. It's like getting a fresh lease on life. So, if you've been contemplating taking this step, take it from me - it's worth it and quit lit like Sober Curious can help motivate you. Education in America used to focus on reading, writing, arithmetic, and critical thinking. That's not as true today, unfortunately. Deviating from high educational standards and core American values has led to societal upheaval and a generation ignorant of the blessings and responsibilities of living in a free society. Teaching young people how to think, not what to think, prepares them for adulthood, and empowering them with truth prepares them for leadership. What can business owners do to support school choice, especially homeschooling, and how can doing so increase their bottom line?  Linda and her guest, Robert Bortins, CEO of Classical Conversations, discuss this and the benefits of a well-educated populace for the future of our nation. Freedom can be lost in one generation. Let's make sure it is not lost in ours. © Copyright 2023, Prosperity 101, LLC For information and resources visit: https://prosperity101.com To  order a copy of Prosperity 101 – Job Security Through Business Prosperity by Linda J. Kevn Kinney will be performing in Atlanta and Athens this weekend, and he swings by to talk to us about the shows and life on the road.  Also: One person is dead and another injured after their car left I-75 North near Bells Ferry Road and tumbled down an embankment early Wednesday, according to the Marietta Police Department. Edgar Perez, 45, and his wife, Blanca Manriquez-Rodriguez, 43, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, were traveling north on the freeway at about 5:30 a.m. when Manriquez-Rodriguez, who was driving, lost control of the 2016 Toyota Sienna minivan, said Officer Chuck McPhilamy, spokesman for the Marietta Police Department. The van “struck the right guardrail, flipped over it and tumbled down a large embankment toward Bells Ferry Lane,” according to McPhilamy. Perez died as a result of the crash, while Manrique-Rodriguez was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, McPhilamy said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Investigator St. Onge. Deviating from their normal Wednesday morning routines, members of the Catholic Church of St. Ann gathered to sing, worship and have a cross of ash marked on their foreheads. The east Cobb church held five services over the day, beginning the six-week season of Lent leading up to Easter. The season commemorates Jesus Christ's journey into the desert, where he fasted and was tempted by the devil. At the end of St. Ann's Mass, following the Eucharist, members filed down the aisles to receive the ash ritual. The Revrend Joseph Aquino, who presided over the 9 a.m. Mass, explained that ashes are a symbol of repentance for Christians — back in biblical times, people would sit in ashes and sackcloth to express penance. In keeping with that theme, Christians often forego certain luxuries during Lent, seeking to follow Christ's example. An errant kick in a physical education class made the Grayson boys basketball's postseason road more interesting. The Rams' home court flooded earlier this month when a sprinkler, hit by a soccer ball during PE, poured water on the boards and rendered the surface unplayable until it is replaced. Because of the damage, Grayson entered the state playoffs unable to host despite being a No. 1 seed. Archer is now the Rams' home site for the opening rounds of the playoffs. Grayson looked plenty comfortable in its new setting Wednesday night, riding an efficient offense to a 99-56 rout of Marietta in the Class AAAAAAA first round. It advances to host another game at Archer on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Valdosta. The Rams (22-5) put up a season high in points, had 58 points at halftime and 83 through three quarters. A total of 13 players scored in the win. Jaiden Mann and Jack Bourgeois scored 15 points each to lead Marietta (5-25). Todd LeCadre added 10 points. The Devils finish at 5-25 on the year. The Wheeler boys utilized a big fourth quarter to defeat Milton 81-64 in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs on Wednesday. Wheeler (22-6) outscored the Eagles 29-12 in the final quarter. The game was tied with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter until the Wildcats went on a 17-0 run over the next four minutes. Every point scored on the run came shots at the basket or by free throw, as Wheeler punished the Eagles on fast breaks. The win advanced Wheeler to the second round of the tournament, where the Wildcats will host North Gwinnett on Saturday, after the Bulldogs defeated Mill Creek 72-62. Isaiah Collier led the Wildcats in scoring with 28 points, including a 12-point fourth quarter. Collier was one of three Wildcats to break double-digit scoring, alongside Rickey McKenzie with 20 and Arrinten Page with 12. On the other side of the court, the Eagles were led in scoring by Josh Dixon with 20, including a 10-point second quarter. Seth Fitzgerald and Avery White each added 15 for Milton. A Senate committee voted Wednesday to advance state Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick's bill to limit passport fee receipts by Georgia clerks of court. As the east Cobb Republican noted, the operative word is now “limit,” rather than “eliminate.” An earlier version of the legislation would have barred clerks of court from receiving personal income from processing U.S. passport applications, which is currently allowed under Georgia law. The latest version of the bill would cap their income from passport fees at $7,500 per year. Senate Bill 19 was filed after media investigations into Cobb Superior Court Clerk Connie Taylor, who has pocketed more than $425,000 in fees since taking office atop her annual income of $170,000. Federal regulations allow local officials who process passport applications to charge a $35 fee for their trouble, while Georgia law permits county clerks who do so to keep that money as personal income. The practice is widespread across the state, but Taylor's proceeds drew scrutiny from Republican lawmakers who pledged to put an end to the supplementary income. Taylor, meanwhile, is facing a Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe following allegations she ordered the destruction of records of her passport fee income. Kirkpatrick's version of the bill then carried with bipartisan support. Democratic Gwinnett County state Sens. Merritt, Sheikh Rahman, and Nabilah Islam (the latter two of Lawrenceville) were the three votes against. Kirkpatrick told the MDJ she hopes for a vote by the full Senate next week. Thirty-six of Cobb County's finest minds will be celebrated for their achievements on Tuesday evening at the annual STAR Student and Teacher banquet, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Metro-Marietta. The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) banquet recognizes high school seniors with the highest SAT scores and grade point average from public, private and charter schools across Cobb and Marietta. The STAR program was launched in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and was adopted by the Metro-Marietta Kiwanis in 1966.  This year's banquet, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roswell Street Baptist Church, is expected to attract more than 200 people. Students who are honored bring family as guests, and also get to select a STAR teacher from their school to be honored. The keynote speaker for this year's banquet is Condace Pressley, a journalist for WSB Radio and Marietta High graduate. Romans 13:1-7 — Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones taught extensively on church history, specifically on the relationship between church and state. In this sermon on Romans 13:1–7 titled “Church and the State (4),” Dr. Lloyd-Jones turns his attention to the underlying foundation of the view proposing an alliance between church and state. How do they biblically defend their position? What biblical evidence do they portray to say this alliance is biblically sound and wise? He enters this controversial topic by looking at two specific confessions of faith, the Belgic Confession and the Westminster Confession. The bulk of these confessions' defense is taken from the Old Testament, with only one direct passage from the New Testament. Pointing to the position of Israel as a nation and Judaism as a religion, proponents of the alliance position maintain no distinction between Israel and the church in this way. Deviating from this position, Dr. Lloyd-Jones advocates for the separation of the church and state, based on the New Testament's teaching on the kingdom of God. As he handles this delicate discussion, he reminds his listeners of the importance of this new identity of believers: the reality that Christians are now citizens of the kingdom through rebirth and this kingdom consists of citizens from every nation and tongue.
