Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Cyberpunk is alive and well in the 21st century and today we're talking with the author of the latest addition to the cyberpunk canon: author Cory O'Brien! In the watery streets of future LA, data is the only currency, and Infodrip fact-checker Orr Vue will find himself at the center of a twisted murder mystery that could cost him his mind, his freedom, and his life! In this episode, we talk with Cory about the origins of the novel's premise, the connections between cyberpunk and noir fiction, the difference between 20th century and 21st century cyberpunk, the literal information economy presented in the book, the gross incompetence of our techno-overlords, how humans contextualize knowledge better than AI, the limits of current AI models, why corporations "let" you be gay, and when the aesthetic overwhelms the genre. We also talk about rogue AI, losing the "punk", stacking your demos, jealously guarding your cat pictures, monetizing fun, digital beastmastering, messing around with Eliza, the home Voight-Kampff test, William Gibson poems, making cyberpunk literally juicy, and an interruption from Alexa!Telepathy would never work!Pre-order Two Truths and a Lie, available March 4th!https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/741701/two-truths-and-a-lie-by-cory-obrien/See Cory on the web!http://bettermyths.comThe new edition of Lyda's book, Ressurection Code, is out now!https://wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/books-by-lyda-morehouse/resurrection-code/Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep It focuses specifically on the Voight-Kampff Empathy Test used by bounty-hunters to distinguish between androids and humans. An episode which has been a long time coming, Georgia, David and Lillian finally tackle the cult classic cyberpunk sci-fi of Ridley Scott's groundbreaking Blade Runner. There is much to discuss from this 'parable of neurodiversity' (as David puts it), including how the Voight-Kampff test of the film mirrors the real-life 'empathy' tests of autism diagnoses, and how the tag-line 'more human than human' relates to language used to describe (and dehumanise) autistic people. The gang also consider the status of the cyborg 'replicants' as potential neurodivergent activists, while a special focus on the character of Rachel reveals how the film's cinematography potentially behaves in a neuroqueer manner. The episode is inspired by David's article on autism and Blade Runner which can be found here if you have the access: https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/10.3828/sfftv.2022.12 If not, you can find a version of the article in Chapter 4 of David's PhD thesis, which is available for free (after signing up to Academia.edu) here: https://www.academia.edu/45516790/The_Fantastic_Autistic_Divergence_Estrangement_and_The_Neuroqueer_Screen_in_Blade_Runner_The_Final_Cut_2007_and_Community_2009_2015_ And for even more on the connections between autism and Blade Runner do check out this blog series by SpeakerToAnimals: https://speakertoanimals.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/do-aspies-dream-of-electric-sheep/ Audio edits by 344 Audio.

This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve go "Off-World" to discuss a dystopian cyberpunk banger that was ahead of it's time - Blade Runner. Hot off the heels of Steve's enjoyment of The Prestige, we'll perform our own Voight-Kampff test to see whether or not he dreams of electric porpoise after his first time watch of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. Can he get over the inexplicable monsoon RAIN in 2019's Los Angeles or will he succumb to the clutches of an Esperanto-fueled origami nightmare? Let's wax this replicant porpoise.
Are you ready to take the Voight-Kampff test, poke out your creator's eye balls, spend a long time enhancing a photo, get crushed in Daryl Hannah's thighs, and ultimately rage against a short life-span? That is right, we are talking about the Blade Runner on its 40th anniversary. Many fans and critics suggest that Blade Runner is the best sci-fi film ever made. Is it? If it isn't then what is? Come along for the ride as we go back 40 years to discuss one of the great films from Ridley Scott. Empire Magazine Article Living In The Past is a show about revisiting pop culture from the past. In the future year of 2019, a grumpy man named Deckard tracks down humanoid creations called replicants. Four replicants break from their programming to find meaning in their short lives in the hellscape of Los Angeles, minus the Hollywood sign. This movie stars Erin's best friend Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos as the foxiest human this side of the solar system, and Harrison Ford being . . . himself? Our two hosts have so many implanted memories of the seven versions of Blade Runner, they need to take the Voight-Kampff test to confirm it's all real. Thanks, Dad. There are fewer laughs this week as our hosts dive into the workings of a truly brilliant work of visual art. What are humans? Are we human? Or are we unicorns? Pretty sure we're haggis.

It's my favorite film of all time...so far! Not a big hit in '82. We wanted Han Solo and we got Rick Deckard instead. More like Dick Wreckard! What a loser! But this movie has endured and earned its place among the most revered sci-fi masterpieces. Ridley Scott followed his classic Alien with this future noir detective story with androids, flying cars and endless torrents of rain! Los Angeles, 2019...well, that was the future in 1982. Thankfully, the weather's a little bit better than that in our present day L.A. There are some fascinating inside stories and lots of laughs to be had in this podcast. So, give it a listen! I promise, it's not a Voight-Kampff test.

And...we're back! Sorry for the unexpected hiatus, but a couple of co-hosts were out of town on a vacation. This week, we are back on track with a review of the 1982 sci-fi classic film, "Blade Runner." Does this film stand the test of time? How well do its story, characters, and dialogue stack up against its impressive visuals? Are its visuals good enough to make up for any other shortcomings? Is this movie more about Harrison Ford's character, or is it really more about the replicants he's hunting? Are there mixed opinions about the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Young's characters? And, what exactly is a Blade Runner anyway? Listen now to find out the answers to these and other burning questions. To be honest, this is the episode of going off on tangents. So, as a bonus, you get a mini-discussion about "Cowboys vs. Aliens," and one co-host reveals a "hot take" about a predominantly beloved Data-centric episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. This episode also sees the return of the If-This-Movie-Were-A-Chipotle-Burrito-Bowl analogy. There are also brief mentions of bread, sandwiches, and pasta, so we apologize if this review makes you hungry for carbs. Grab your jacket, gun, and Voight-Kampff machine as we investigate and chase down...Blade Runner. Hello DickHeads. Here comes a strange one. A Maze of Death is PKD's 27th published novel and the only one so far with a foreword by the author and a table of contents. Both of which are more exciting than they initially sound. Maze is the story of 14 spacefaring adventurers, a strange walking tower, and a couple of new gods. Plus: Christians on PKD. Perspicaciousness. And the closest we've seen to a Voight-Kampff video game. We did it. We finally did it. Welcome to the Dark Future/Past that is Los Angeles 2019, as we start our long awaited (and possibly quite long running) Blade Runner commentary. We're getting going where any newbie to the series should start: The Final Cut. So, crack a Tsing Tao, and... that's about it. That and Coca-Cola are like the only brands to survive the Blade Runner Curse. It's alright though, just answer your Voight-Kampff test questions truthfully, and you'll most likely avoid "retirement." Don't let this moment be lost in time or you'll be crying.... tears...... in... rain. Cineppraisal is an audio commentary podcast, designed to be played alongside the movies we talk about. During the beginning of the episode, we will mention sync points to help match up our audio with the film. This one is longer, so you don't have to do the same this week, but feel free! TLDR: Loved it) -I'm still processing, but this was maybe my favorite episode in years. It mixed everything good about the older, mission-oriented episodes of Shield with all the threats and tools that have been piling up in the last few seasons. -I like that they brought Souza in as an obstacle at first, but it'll be fun to hopefully have him allied with the team in later episodes. The line "She couldn't stay with Rick; she had to go with Victor" really gave me vibes of what I'm sure Souza experienced when Cap showed up to get Peggy back - in whatever timeline that would've happened in. I do like that he was on to Hydra infiltrating Shield all the way back here in '55, although I wonder if that means he was one of the Winter Soldier's earliest victims offscreen. -Simmons getting her Agent Carter on was fun, and it makes sense that in this age where word of mouth was bigger than anything else, she would be able to get away with it until running into someone who actually knew Peggy. She gets less and less robotic in every episode since the season 6 finale, but then again, Coulson isn't exactly robotic either, so I'm still Team-LMD-Fitzsimmons. -Other things I enjoyed: -Simmons finding out where in time they are with the radio. Seems like something I would have done. -the deeper look into the past's white supremacy and the line "stupid white privilege" -the continued storyline of Daisy getting opportunities to destroy the organization that turned both her parents into monsters -the aftereffects of season 6 on May and Yoyo -the idea that EMPs are the best weapon against chronicoms (sidenote: AIDA had EMP-proof batteries even before Radcliffe got ahold of the Darkhold. Why are the Chronicoms not as smart as Radcliffe?????) All in all, it was a great and fun episode, and exactly the kind of content I wanted from this season. Can't wait to see where the Coulson cliffhanger leads and how they get him back from Shield before that ripple turns into a wave. Until next time, true believers. Excelsior! For the past year, FAQ has been asking New York's politicians the toughest questions, namely: “Are you a replicant?” The results of their Voight-Kampff tests have been a tightly held secret until now. It’s November, 2019, and the future is here and so are the tests, and results.
It is November, 2019. Are you prepared to take the Voight-Kampff test? We watched "Blade Runner," Ridley Scott's 1982 classic. As you will hear in the episode, apologies for our hiatus. We sincerely hope to be back on a weekly release schedule. Remember to subscribe so our new episodes will be delivered directly to you for your listening pleasure. Enjoy, whether you are a replicant or not!
Los Angeles, November 2019. Blade Runner's future is now ours. Ridley Scott's 1982 classic future film of replicants escaping to a retrofitted Earth and meeting their end at the hands of the washed out, titular Blade Runner, Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, is adapted from Philip K. Dick's equally classic 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Both film and book are meditations on what it is to be human but we have been looking through the eyes of the film ever since it plunged us into its acid rain, neon coated, West Coast nightmare of flaming night skies, commercial ziggurats, flying cars and fake animals. Now its future is our present. We live in a world of mass species die off, environmental crisis, rapidly developing A.I., all powerful corporations and extreme divides between rich and poor. Film and book have bled into our culture in many different ways and in this series of the Essay, we mark the year of Blade Runner, in the month of Blade Runner. The writer Ken Hollings takes the Voight Kampff test as he examines the ethical barriers between us and the machine. "According to both the novel and its film adaptation, androids are committing a crime simply by not being human. And in the world of 2019, Blade Runner reveals, the punishment is enforced ‘retirement' – or legal execution. This is the extent to which humanity holds itself responsible for its creations. " Producer Mark Burman
Grab your Jade Key, because in this episode we are continuing our quest by breaking down the movie Blade Runner. This is Chris's first full viewing of the 1982 classic, and there are a lot of questions to be asked. How is life like a death cake? Why wouldn't this movie fly in today's social climate? What is up with the crazy social plot holes? Prepare your attack ships off the shoulder of Orion, and fire up your c-beams at Tannhauser Gate! It's time to take the Voight-Kampff test, and Get To The Good Part! This episode was originally published as a Chapter 26 bonus episode on August 5, 2018 to our Patreon campaign. If it's been a while since you listened to our breakdown of Chapter 26, give it a listen! Listen on Apple Podcasts or Anchor.

Rutger Oelsen Hauer (1944 - 2019) was the iconic Dutch actor who made a name for himself in Europe before heading to Hollywood alongside director and frequent collaborator Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP). Rutger proved he could inhabit a number of different characters but would frequently find a niche for himself taking on the darker roles of the International terrorist, the lonely hitchhiker, the Italian mercenary, the vampire king, and the renegade Replicant. Whitley (@leigh-gallagher) is a member of Glasgow techno collective "Voight-Kampff" (@vk2018), a newly formed group looking to bring an industrial techno scene to the city which is much needed. Through creating an aggressive sound, reminiscent of that in clubs such as Tresor and largely demonstrated in the Netherlands as a whole, the aim is to channel the energy created in various European clubs into his music whilst taking inspiration largely from underground techno scenes around the world.

We take a look at the sci-fi movie hit Blade Runner 2049 and the Blade Runner 2049 theory: ‘Is Rachael a Human or a Replicant?’. That Blade Runner 2049 theory is one of many that Joe and Anthony propose in this episode of Abstract Nonsense the Fan Theories and Alternate Readings Podcast. Blade Runner Theories - No. 1 [2:45] Memory girl tricked the replicants into thinking she's the chosen one This Blade Runner 2049 theory takes a very alternative view of the new Blade Runner movie, arguing that the Memory Girl tricks the replicants into thinking she is actually the chosen one. Is the Memory Girl the replicant messiah or should this Blade Runner 2049 theory be retired early? Blade Runner Theories - No. 2 [10:30] Is Rachael Human? This Blade Runner 2049 theory plays on one of the most famous theories from the original Blade Runner movie, the theory that Deckard is a replicant. This Bladerunner 2049 Theory turns that theory around posing the theory that instead of a human being a replicant...what if a replicant was actually a human? This Bladerunner 2049 argues that Rachael might actually be human and that the Voight Kampff test performed in the first Bladerunner film may not have been as effective as Deckard believes it is. Blade Runner Theories - No. 3 [19:28] Is Deckard a Replicant? As mentioned in the last Theory, this Bladerunner theory is probably the oldest and most well-known one. There's no need to introduce this theory, as everyone knows the Bladerunner theory that Deckard is actually a replicant. Blade Runner Theories - No. 4 [25:07] Is Blade Runner pro-Trump? Is Blade Runner 2049 secretly a subversive message designed to inspire people to want to build a giant wall on the Mexican border? This Bladerunner theory argues that Bladerunner 2049 is actually a secret pro-Trump film, designed to show the virtues of building a wall. Is this true or false? You’re on a bus browsing Twitter on your phone when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a notification, there's a new episode of Argue the Toss. You reach down, you hit the icon for your preferred podcast player. The episode sits there in the list, its progress bar at 0%, desperately fighting to be played, but it can’t, not without your pressing Play. But you’re not pressing Play. Why is that? Is it because this Voight-Kampff blurb conceit ran out of steam about three sentences ago? This week Chella and Drew have travelled to the far-flung future of 2049 to watch the trailer for Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to the original Blade Runner, which takes place in the far-flung future of two years from now. They return with deep and well-considered opinions, and also a sports almanac I'm not supposed to tell anybody about. Note: Apologies for technical issues on this episode. We are working to fix this for future casts.

When Data's grandpa is diagnosed with an incurable illness, he doesn't express much grief, and in return, his grandpa steals his body and makes a play at immortality. It would have been a perfect plan, but the old man was set in his ways, and really doesn't know how to act in a modern, professional starship setting. Will the crew catch on that Data is once again not who he claims to be? Will Data's bad behavior get him locked up in Rura Penthe? Can he pass a Voight-Kampff test? It's the episode where the Star Trek trading cards prove that they're worth what you pay for them.
If you are a dolphin eating a cherry pie, where does the butter go? If your answer is "Spaghetti O's" then you just passed the Voight-Kampff test! That means you wont be pursued by a Blade Runner! Devon and Brandon reflect on the 1982 cult classic, BLADE RUNNER. In this episode discussing the visually stunning adaptation of Philip K. Dick's “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, the boys ask important questions like “How the hell does a Voight-Kampff test work?”, “Is Rick Deckard a replicant and does it matter?” and “Where did Roy get that damn Dove?”. They also find time to pay a great deal of respect to the ingenious crew for the incredible work on a film rumored to have been plagued by countless bumps in the road. Why this film wasn't a smash hit in ‘82, we'll never know, but what we do know is that Deckard's gun is the absolute shit.
