Sometimes Hollywood screws up real good. When that happens, in times of direst need, podcasters will come together to teach the major studios the error of their ways by paying homage to the edited versions of these films they got us to buy a second time. We kick things of with 1990's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut, and wash that down with 1982's Blade Runner: The Final Cut. We sure showed them!Email: info@channel-37.comTwitter: @WHXN37

An episode which has been a long time coming, Georgia, David and Lillian finally tackle the cult classic cyberpunk sci-fi of Ridley Scott's groundbreaking Blade Runner. There is much to discuss from this 'parable of neurodiversity' (as David puts it), including how the Voight-Kampff test of the film mirrors the real-life 'empathy' tests of autism diagnoses, and how the tag-line 'more human than human' relates to language used to describe (and dehumanise) autistic people. The gang also consider the status of the cyborg 'replicants' as potential neurodivergent activists, while a special focus on the character of Rachel reveals how the film's cinematography potentially behaves in a neuroqueer manner. The episode is inspired by David's article on autism and Blade Runner which can be found here if you have the access: https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/doi/10.3828/sfftv.2022.12 If not, you can find a version of the article in Chapter 4 of David's PhD thesis, which is available for free (after signing up to Academia.edu) here: https://www.academia.edu/45516790/The_Fantastic_Autistic_Divergence_Estrangement_and_The_Neuroqueer_Screen_in_Blade_Runner_The_Final_Cut_2007_and_Community_2009_2015_ And for even more on the connections between autism and Blade Runner do check out this blog series by SpeakerToAnimals: https://speakertoanimals.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/do-aspies-dream-of-electric-sheep/   Audio edits by 344 Audio.

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

What unfolded was a nightmarish world of gas explosions and eruptions, darkness stabbed by beams of light, flying cars, omnipresent rain on the ground, cops, magnificent buildings, garbage and hovels. The quirky and great minds of Phillip K. Dick and Ridley Scott had flung me into a world far in the future (Ha! LA in 2019 to be exact) and then caused me to question society, religion, race, slavery, the forward progress of humans, advertising and marketing, human relationships, all in 117 minutes (BTW, everything I'm talking about refers to Blade Runner: The Final Cut, as this was the version that Scott ultimately approved). At the time, I thought it was an amazing sci-fi tale and was more taken by the visuals than the story and lessons therein. I had no concept of film noir at that point, but now I think of Blade Runner as future noir --- the noir sensibilities of the 40s and 50s launched into a world almost (and now, in fact) 100 years later. email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

This month, we are taking a look at blockbuster movies we have missed. Lauren takes Greg down the cult classic rabbit hole that is Blade Runner (The Final Cut). In our analysis of this divisive film, we discuss the moral implications of making Replicants, inconsistent population portrayals, unsympathetic characters, and Greg throws down against Lauren in an origami argument over whether or not Deckward is a Replicant.   Music: 64Sunday by Twinmusicom.org

Blade Runner has oft been tossed around as a potential subject for the show, and due to recent personal circumstances, it finally landed. Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is available in numerous formats, most notably the theatrical cut (with voiceover), the director's cut and Blade Runner The Final Cut. Blade Runner The Final Cut is the authorized restoration by Ridley Scott without the controversial voice over or Hollywood ending. During this week's episode, the team not only analyzes Blade Runner The Final Cut, but also shakes things up in presentation. Inspired by the release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Stevie proposed this show should concentrate on how films and television handle morality tales (seeing as churches are more concerned with who is sleeping with whom like institutional Hedy Hoppers....but I digress).  Singling out The Good Place, Lucifer and the second season of Preacher, Stevie and Emmet tackle how pop culture today deals with morality and religion.  Sadly Star Trek: Discovery gets short shrift, but we'll get back to that sooner rather than later.

Let us rewind once again! The year we’re going back to is 1982 – the year that Harrison Ford wasn’t doing a Star Wars or Indiana Jones movie – Blade Runner. In anticipation of the upcoming sequel Blade Runner 2049, Jason and Rob rewind to bring us a review of the Ridley Scott’s neo-noir, science fiction film. But which version you ask? Blade Runner: The Final Cut. In a slightly dystopian 2019 Los Angeles, ex-police officer Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is forced to return to his old job as a “Blade Runner” – His assignment: eliminate four escaped bioengineered Replicants. Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation where he meets Rachel (Sean Young), a Replicant girl he develops feelings for – challenging his previous views on the humanity of Replicants. In the cinematic feature that has garnered itself a cult following, we dig deep in exploring the many levels of themes (it's our most analytical podcast yet), the special effects, and standout scenes. We ask the important questions; What do the eyes mean? What’s the deal with the unicorn? And is Deckard a Replicant!? Sit back and enjoy our second episode of Rewind & Review.

We were so excited to watch Blade Runner. We've heard it's one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. Unfortunately, it's one of the worst. Blade Runner: The Final Cut moves slower than molasses and is riddled with plot holes. The only good thing about the movie is it does raise some interesting philosophical questions, but honestly I never even got to that point mentally because the movie was so bad. Luckily we have a guest host to try to defend this movie. Andre Hutchens from Backseat Directors (@TheBDPodcast) joins us and we have a great time getting to know Andre and talking about the movie. Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan have returned again to talk about the ills of capitalism. Jodie Foster's new film Money Monster puts George Clooney in a hostage situation alongside his producer, played by Julia Roberts. We discuss the film's thriller qualities and why its inability to be believable might not actually be a bad thing. Before that, we talk about some new Blu-ray releases, including Deadpool (which we did a podcast on and Dylan reviewed), as well as this week's Criterion title. There is also some Cannes discussion as we think about what films we are most excited to see when they're released stateside. A lot of news is covered at the beginning but eventually we do talk about two other movies we saw this week. Dylan revisited John Carpenter's They Live and Chris finally saw Blade Runner in the form of Blade Runner: The Final Cut. Next week we will be reviewing Shane Black's new film, The Nice Guys, starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
