John Lenahan came to Britain from his native Philadelphia for a short trip and has never quite made it back.   John originally grabbed the headlines as the first person in 85 years to be expelled from the Magic Circle. The 3-card trick he exposed on How Do They Do That? is no more than a gambling con, but John took the rap and enjoyed the publicity.   2004 saw him starring in a new primetime BBC1 show, Secrets of Magic. His own BBC2 series, Stuff The White Rabbit, achieved record ratings for the slot. Other TV credits include presenting the travelogue Open Road, playing the voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf, and guest appearances on everything from TFI Friday to Celebrity Squares. He also fronted HoaxBusters, an ITV network show lifting the lid on scams and hoaxes. John has performed onstage all over the world, from Beijing and Dubai to Dublin. He has toured alongside Jack Dee, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry and Michael Ball. Besides all this, Lenahan is one of the most successful corporate entertainers in the country. Apart from his show-stealing cabaret, he has made kitchens appear, taught Bank of England staff to juggle, read thousands of minds and levitated a 20-pound Toblerone bar. He was the first person on record to perform magic live over the Internet, for BT. John has been described by The Guardian as ‘the mascot of a magical renaissance' - and by Jackie Collins as ‘extremely good looking'. John Lenahan lives in Cricklewood, London. In a world dominated by awards, he is proud to have once been voted Time Out Street Magician of the Year.   John's novels: Shadowmagic , The Prince of Hazel & Oak and Sons of Macha are now available in one omnibus -The Shadowmagic Trilogy - published by Harper Collins and is out in paperback iBook, Nook and Kindle formats. The Magic Circle has finally recognised their mistake and reinstated John!

John Lenahan (http://johnlenahan.com) is a man of many talents. His primary gig is dazzling passengers on cruise ships with his magic shows. Yes, that’s his real job. As such, he’s traveling much of the time. In between, he’s a published author and has been known to do a stint on a comedy tour or two. John has lots of stories to share with us over the coming weeks, but the first one comes from Tenerife, on of the Canary Islands just off the coast of Africa, but owned by Spain. Actually, there are two stories of magic and travel, one about a reverse vanishing prostitute, and the other about the one trick that got away. Speaking of that, did you know that Sheila was almost detained for carrying contraband in her carryon bag? Ah, the things you learn about people when you travel. As you may know, Evo writes articles on behalf of our sponsor, published his story on the Yak Sant Tattoo Festival in Thailand (http://travelsmith.com) … and it’s really, really good. So good, in fact, that they’ve asked him to submit it to some travel writing contests, which is a gigantic honor. Next month, we’re traveling to China for the first time ever! If we can figure out how to connect to the internet while we’re there, we’ll have some great stuff to share during the trip. But one thing that is certain? Many of the few dozen uber fans of ours -- we call them patrons (https://www.patreon.com/opptravelers?ty=h) -- will be getting postcards from there! At least we’re pretty sure the Great Firewall of China won’t block that, right? Want more ShEvo in your life? Well… you’ve got options. ShEvo.wtf (https://www.flickr.com/photos/sheila_dee) for links to your preferred listening post. We’ve quite a few!

Full Show Script [Thai translated] EVO: As you heard in the opening clip, I got a new tattoo about a month ago. I've been considering it since before we left The States, and decided to pull the trigger here in Thailand. SHE: Seriously, that's a pretty weak pun, dude.  EVO: Noted.  SHE: Woodee from 84 Tattoo Andaman Ink -- that probably rolls off the tongue better in Thai -- did the work, which took about three hours. The first time. EVO: She said "first time" because when I went to get a little touchup on some lines and color... well. You'll hear. [Tattoo redo] EVO: Pretty sure that's Thai for "stupid Americans". We'll cover the dentist a little later. SHE: Woodee is a bit of a perfectionist and insisted on redoing ALL of the outline. All of it. AND the vast majority of the color work. It now looks even better, though I'm not sure Evo would have went back had he known he'd be back in the chair for another 2 hours, going over the same not-quite-healed body art. EVO: You know... Back in the day, I'd have have released all 2 hours of tattoo audio and called it a show. I'm amazed at how much I've grown as a storyteller. SHE: And as you heard in that clip, we also went to the dentist or dental hygienist recently. That was... interesting. Super cheap, like $30 each, but interesting.  EVO: Here's the process, in a nutshell: You sit in the normal dental chair, which is immediately and rather quickly placed in the prone position. You're handed a small plastic mirror so you can watch the procedure (as if). The dentist/dental hygienist hooks the spit-sucking tool on the of your mouth, she goes to work with the water pick and scaler. 15 minutes later, you're done. And a little dazed. [Clean dentist] SHE: We recorded audio of the entire experience. But I'm a nice person who thinks the tattoo gun noise was enough torture for one show.  EVO: Don't think that all our experiences have been painful. We've been taking full advantage of thai massage shops since we've been in country. We were told by Mr. John Lenahan, professional traveling magician and fantastic author, that you could tell the legit places from the skeezy places pretty easily. SHE: If the girls are wearing hot pants, it's definitely one of those establishments, so you'll want to bring some extra cash. (Wait... bring extra cash? Shouldn't we advice simply "Don't go in"?) EVO: (Hey, I'm trying to serve all possible audiences, Honey. Just stick to the script.) SHE: We'll talk about this later.  EVO: Uh... Ok. Anyhow, while Sheila was finishing up her massage from our standard, non-hot-pants-wearing establishment, the owner of the shop took advantage of my free time to practice her English. And to cast a little doubt on John's advice. It seems some girls in the legit establishments like to do a little... freelancing. [Extra massage] EVO: She's gesturing to the young woman who just finished massaging Sheila. SHE: Good news for her: We're poor, too. We wont be spending money for anything "extra" at the massage studio. Right, honey? EVO: Right honey. and as you've seen from our various social status updates this week... we took some private thai food cooking lessons. [Cooking school] SHE: For about $20 total, we learned how to shop and prepare three tasty thai dishes. There's a video montage on Evo's YouTube page, our Facebook page, and now in these show notes. EVO: And now, Sheila has seven things she can cook!  SHE:You're already in enough trouble over this show. Don't push it. For the rest of you, we're considering doing a question and answer show next week. So if you have questions, send them to us however you like.  EVO: Bonus points if you record yourself asking them. SHE: But that's not necessary. Just ask us anything you like about traveling, housesitting, how I keep from killing him... If we get enough, it might make for a fun show. And you'll get more of our...
