This week, we tracked a trail through deserts, glaciers, coral reefs, paddy fields, palaces, the DMZ between the two Koreas and an Italian hilltop to catch a copywriter with a lifetime of wild experience behind him. Ciao, Andrew Jolliffe. For 25 years he's written ads, strategies, thought starters, content, manifestos and copy. This week we're joined by the nation's favourite grumpy comedian - the incredibly funny Jack Dee!Jack joins Kate to chart his journey through his unconventional path to comedy. Despite struggling through most of school, acting was the one thing that felt like home - so that's where he set his sights. He tells us how while working in a bar, he discovered a newfound zest for learning and academia, which set the stage for an unexpected turn from acting to the world of comedy and a storied career ever since. He also remembers how he ended up doing his first gig: on a whim; one night, in the mid-80s, at 2am, standing in line at the Comedy Store, ready to show off his comedic chops... In this episode, I talk to the fantastic comedian RICHARD MORTON about his comedy career. Geordie comedian Richard Morton combines music and comedy to create a unique comic act. With hilarious comedy songs and stand-up, the energetic funny man has forged an impressive status as a live act, and supported many great comedians on tour including Lee Evans, Jack Dee, Jo Brand, Phill Jupitus and Eddie Izzard. In a long and established career, Morton had performed several sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe and other festivals, has regularly appeared on TV and radio, was one half of the musical duo The Panic Brothers (with Reg Meuross) before turning solo, and is a founder member of London's legendary Comedy Store's Cutting Edge show. Morton is determined to make an audience laugh, is extremely likeable and highly recommended. In todays chat I am in awe of another great comedy musical talent. This gentleman of the Stand Up circuit has been creating tears of laughter for 4 decades. Described as "possibly Newcastle's finest export since the famous brown ale" I learned something knew when delving deeper into Mr Morton's career and never knew he was one part of The Panic Brothers a very popular Duo working constantly in the 1980's and 90's. We hear all about their work back then and what has happened since. Reg & Richard haven't wasted any time, they have gone on to be successes in what they do best and today we talk about Richards time working with acts like Rik Mayall, Ben Elton, Lenny Henry and Fred Macauley, and his time at the Edinburgh and Montreal Festival. The Comedy Store features as well as his TV successes and Radio Work. Just a minute with Nicholas Parsons and his own radio special In the Lounge where he talks about his passions in music. All in all this is a fun chat and mini This is Your Life when I welcome Legend of Laughter Richard Morton.

John Lenahan came to Britain from his native Philadelphia for a short trip and has never quite made it back. John originally grabbed the headlines as the first person in 85 years to be expelled from the Magic Circle. The 3-card trick he exposed on How Do They Do That? is no more than a gambling con, but John took the rap and enjoyed the publicity. 2004 saw him starring in a new primetime BBC1 show, Secrets of Magic. His own BBC2 series, Stuff The White Rabbit, achieved record ratings for the slot. Other TV credits include presenting the travelogue Open Road, playing the voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf, and guest appearances on everything from TFI Friday to Celebrity Squares. He also fronted HoaxBusters, an ITV network show lifting the lid on scams and hoaxes. John has performed onstage all over the world, from Beijing and Dubai to Dublin. He has toured alongside Jack Dee, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry and Michael Ball. Besides all this, Lenahan is one of the most successful corporate entertainers in the country. Apart from his show-stealing cabaret, he has made kitchens appear, taught Bank of England staff to juggle, read thousands of minds and levitated a 20-pound Toblerone bar. He was the first person on record to perform magic live over the Internet, for BT. John has been described by The Guardian as ‘the mascot of a magical renaissance' - and by Jackie Collins as ‘extremely good looking'. John Lenahan lives in Cricklewood, London. In a world dominated by awards, he is proud to have once been voted Time Out Street Magician of the Year. John's novels: Shadowmagic , The Prince of Hazel & Oak and Sons of Macha are now available in one omnibus -The Shadowmagic Trilogy - published by Harper Collins and is out in paperback iBook, Nook and Kindle formats. The Magic Circle has finally recognised their mistake and reinstated John!

0225 - Auditory DisconnectionsWe'll look at the amount of tone and emotion a little later, but for now let's examine a bit more, the claim that the words you say and the tone in which they are said, have to be congruent. Think of the phrase “I'm happy” and you'd expect it to be said in a happy tone, bright, light, smiling, laughing. If it's said slowly, in a flat dull tone, it may not fit with the context and make you sound dull, bored, disinterested, fake, rude, sarcastic or even borderline sociopath – unable to ‘read a situation' and react to it appropriately to ‘fit in'. Now there may be a good reason for a disconnect, especially if you are acting a part and it could be used for comic effect of course. Like with the British comedian Jack Dee. Let's take another example. You may use an inappropriate upward inflection when you are talking? Like that! The tone will contradict the words and listeners will subconsciously have to work to make sense of the conflict. Their mind is not on what you are saying, and you are not communicating. So, as an incongruity can be confusing, talk in a tone that is appropriate to the message.Audio recording script and show notes (c) 2021 Peter StewartThrough these around-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection and projection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a career spent in TV and radio studios. He's trained news presenters on regional TV, the BBC News Channel and on flagship programmes such as the BBC's Panorama. Other trainees have been music presenters, breakfast show hosts, travel news presenters and voice-over artists. He has written a number of books on audio and video presentation and production (“Essential Radio Journalism”, “JournoLists”, two editions of “Essential Radio Skills” and three editions of “Broadcast Journalism”) and has written on voice and presentation skills in the BBC's in-house newspaper “Ariel”.Peter has presented hundreds of radio shows (you may have heard him on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, Virgin Radio or Kiss, as well as BBC regional radio) with formats as diverse as music-presentation, interview shows, ‘special' programmes for elections and budgets, live outside broadcasts and commentaries and even the occasional sports, gardening and dedication programmes. He has read several thousand news bulletins, and hosted nearly 2,000 podcast episodes, and is a vocal image consultant advising in all aspects of voice and speech training for presenters on radio and TV, podcasts and YouTube, voiceovers and videocalls. The podcast title refers to those who may wish to change their speaking voice in some way. It is not a suggestion that anyone should, or be pressured into needing to. We love accents and dialects, and are well aware that how we speak changes over time. The key is: is your voice successfully communicating your message, so it is being understood (and potentially being acted upon) by your target audience? This podcast is London-based and examples are spoken in the RP (Received Pronunciation) / standard-English / BBC English pronunciation, although invariably applicable to other languages, accents and dialects.Music credits:"Bleeping Demo" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/7012-bleeping-demoLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Beauty Flow" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5025-beauty-flowLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Envision" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/4706-envisionLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Limit 70" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5710-limit-70License: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Rising Tide" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5027-rising-tideLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license"Wholesome" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Link: https://incompetech.filmmusic.io/song/5050-wholesomeLicense: https://filmmusic.io/standard-license See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Trevor Feelgood Talks To Jack Dee At West Wood One UK Studio
For the last few months as the country has been a lockdown of some kind, many of us have looked to TV and radio – comedy in particular – as a form of escapism. So it seemed fitting to invite one of the nation's best-loved comedians onto The Lonely Arts Club.In this virtual episode of The Lonely Arts Club, Jo Caulfield, who is not only an award-winning comedian but also a writer and actress, displays her mischievous nature when telling us about her journey so far."A friend did an open spot at the Comedy Store and I went along to watch them and I remember the bill because it was Mark Lamarr comparing who weirdly I knew from the Rockabilly circuit; I didn't know he was a comedian. And Jack Dee and Sean Meo. Sean Meo who is still a comedian writes very good, well-structured jokes and I remember watching Sean and thinking “that's great but I couldn't do that”, cos I don't know how you write these joke things and then when Jack Dee was on I thought “I could totally do that”, because as far as I could see I didn't see the art in what he did. I just thought, “oh, I moan about stuff too, I complain about everybody, I hate people. I could do this."Getting to know about Jo's childhood and her first steps into the limelight is one of the talking points of this episode, however Jo also discusses making comedy for TV, writing for other comics, such as Graham Norton and her stance on politics in comedy.Catch this hilarious episode next Tuesday, when it will be available to download from Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Please note, this episode contains strong language.

As the General Election campaign hots up, two new political satires have been unveiled- ITV's Newzoids and Channel 4's Ballot Monkeys, with the former reuniting some of the vocal and production talent of Spitting Image. Radio 4's Dead Ringers and the Vote Now Show are also back on air, not to mention election specials for satirical stalwarts Rory Bremner, Jack Dee and Charlie Brooker. But despite this crowded market, is satire, as Spectator columnist and satirical author Toby Young would have it, headed for an early grave? Steve is joined by Rory Bremner himself to give satire a health check ahead of the General Election, in discussion with Toby Young and the Assistant Editor of the New Statesman, Helen Lewis.Pay-TV broadcaster Sky has reported a 20% rise in operating profit helped by strong demand across Europe. Nick Doody is a textbook "unsung hero" of comedy: fiercely analytical, and with an approach to jokes that is both cerebral and instinctive. He talks here in fascinating detail about elements of his writing process: divergent thinking, freeing oneself from the logic of a situation, and manufacturing outrage... Lots of emails this week from listeners angered by BBC radio's lack of coverage of what was claimed to be a 50,000-strong demonstration against the coalition's cuts - even though it started just outside Broadcasting House. Was it, you wondered, evidence that the corporation's news coverage isn't as impartial as it claims? Also under discussion - the "N word". Is it ever acceptable to use it on the air? Roger talks to the producer of Radio 4's Archive on 4 documentary A History of the N Word and Radio 4's Editor of editorial standards, Roger Mahony. Elsewhere in the programme, the truth behind the story that Jack Dee threatened to resign from Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue; the release of a report on the quality and impartiality of BBC coverage of rural affairs; and the shipping forecast - beloved of Radio 4 listeners, but is it still used by those in peril on the sea? Producer: Will Yates A Whistledown production for BBC Radio 4.
Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the comedian, Jack Dee. Comedian, actor and writer, his persona is that of the laconic miserabilist - his hit sit-com was called "Lead Balloon" and his autobiography entitled "Thanks For Nothing". That is only part of the picture: even though show business was in the family - his great grandparents were in music hall - his early working life ranged all over the place. From grafting in the kitchens of The Ritz to working in an artificial leg factory - at one point he even seriously considered the priesthood. He says his caustic, ironic, sarcastic comedy comes from "a sort of realism. You can't escape the dark stuff in life ... and my way of dealing with that is to absorb it into my life so that it's no longer worrying for me." Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
