A lot of times we get held back by our limitations, but the truth is that most of these limitations are self-imposed and mind over matter. In this episode, Ram Gidoomal shares his journey of going from a rich boy to a refugee and then coming full circle to succeed in ways beyond his imagination. His story is nothing short of inspiring! Here's some of the great stuff that we cover in this show:Ram Gidoomal is a British author, businessman, and philanthropist who has written several books, including his most recent one - The Silk Road. He decided to write this book to highlight the issues facing young Asian women and the differential treatment between men and women in their community.Ram was born into an Indian immigrant family of silk traders in Kenya and enjoyed an idyllic childhood in Mombasa. As he turned 17, his family endured devastating second deportation, to London. Starting from scratch, his family worked hard and eventually became very successful. In 1987, Ram visited the slums of Bombay and was shocked by what he saw. He joined hands with Steve Chalke to initiate Christmas Cracker, a project that aimed to raise 1 million pounds for 200 youth groups across the UK. The project ended up raising nearly 5 million pounds over 7 years. In 2000, Ram was approached to run for Mayor of London by a new Christian Democrat party. He agreed to run, and his campaign shifted the political agenda to focus on the needs of the carless, homeless and jobless. Gidoomal proposed issuing a 500 million pound bond to regenerate East London, and today social impact finance has reached over a billion pounds in London.----------------------ABOUT RAMRAM GIDOOMAL was born into an Indian immigrant family in Kenya and has worked for over 30 years at board and senior management level in the private, public, and voluntary sectors. At present he is, among other things, Chair of Cotton Connect. Author of several books, and recipient of Honorary Doctorates from three UK universities, he is included in High flyers 50 - the 50 most eminent people of Indian origin living and working outside India. In 1998 he was appointed a CBE by HM The Queen.----------------------For complete show notes, transcript and links to our guest, check out our website: www.pushtobemore.com.

This is no ordinary memoir. Moving back and forth through time, two stories with fascinating parallels gradually unfold. One is of a Second World War Spitfire ace whose flying career came to a premature end when he was shot down and lost an eye, the other is about his progeny, a second generation fighter pilot who rose to the rank of air marshal. There were times when the lives of both father and son, Robbie and Black Robertson, hung in the balance occasions when survival was simply a matter of luck. The narrative is unique in its use of two separate and distinct voices. The author s own reminiscences are interwoven with those of his father recorded more than thirty years ago. Intensely personal and revealing, controversial too at times, this memoir is above all about people. There is a final irony though. The son spent a lifetime training for the ultimate examination one that despite strictly limited preparation his father passed with flying colours. To Black Robertson s eternal regret he was never able to put his own training to the test. His father was awarded the DFC and retired as a flight lieutenant after five years or so. He himself served for nearly thirty-six years, earned a Queen s Commendation, an OBE and CBE and served as an ADC to HM The Queen. But after reaching almost the top of the RAF tree, in one important sense he retired unfulfilled; his mettle was never tested under fire. Anyone interested to know more about flying, about the RAF, about leadership, about character even, need look no further than this beautifully crafted delivery.

Jeremy Black on James Bond - A British Icon - Is Today's James Bond Still James Bond?

So what you're saying is...

James Bond is a globally recognised British institution. As iconic as Big Ben and HM The Queen. But how do today's Bond films compare with the original films in the franchise, or indeed with the original books? Would Ian Fleming recognise Daniel Craig's depiction of the secret service agent? Can Bond survive into an increasingly woke future? Who should play the next Bond? Joining us to discuss this we are delighted to have renowned historian and prolific author, Prof. Jeremy Black, author of the hugely entertaining book "The World of James Bond: The Lives & Times of 007", which presents an insightful and thoroughly entertaining exploration of the political context of the Bond books and films. In his book Jeremy Black offers a historian's interpretation from the perspective of the late 2010s, assessing James Bond in terms of the greatly changing world order of the Bond years―a lifetime that stretches from 1953, when the first novel appeared, to the present. Black argues that the Bond novels―the Fleming books as well as the often-neglected novels authored by others after Fleming died in 1964―and films drew on current fears in order to reduce the implausibility of the villains and their villainy. The novels and films also presented potent images of national character, explored the rapidly changing relationship between a declining Britain and an ascendant United States, charted the course of the Cold War and the subsequent post-1990 world, and offered an evolving but always potent demonology. Bond was, and still is, an important aspect of post–World War II popular culture throughout the Western world. This was particularly so after Hollywood launched the filmic Bond, thus making him not only a character designed for the American film market but also a world product and a figure of globalization. Class, place, gender, violence, sex, race―all are themes that Black scrutinizes through the ongoing shifts in characterization and plot. His well-informed and well-argued analysis provides a fascinating history of the enduring and evolving appeal of James Bond. In 1800, Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, erected the first known Christmas tree at Windsor Castle. She hosted a party for the children of Windsor families. According to Dr. John Watkins, who wrote a biography of Queen Charlotte, the large yew tree stood in a tub in the middle of the drawing room at Queen's Lodge. The branches were decorated with “bunches of sweetmeats, almonds, and raisins in papers, fruits and toys, most tastefully arranged, and the whole illuminated by small wax candles.” Prince Albert popularized the Christmas tree. As he and Queen Victoria shared their family tradition of gathering around the tree at Windsor Castle with popular publications of the day, the tradition caught on with families throughout the country. With the support (and possibly encouragement) of the royal family, Illustrated London News, Cassell's Magazine, and The Graphic shared images of the royal Christmas at Windsor with details about the royal trees. After Victoria, in the early 20th century, the royals began celebrating Christmas at Sandringham. Edward VII decided to start holding family Christmas celebrations there in 1864. George V continued the tradition of the royal family Christmas at Sandringham. In 1932, King George V delivered the first royal Christmas broadcast live from Sandringham House. George VI, who succeeded his brother, gave his first Christmas broadcast in 1937. In 1939, George VI spoke on the first Christmas of World War II. He sadly reflected on the loss of peace during the Christmas season and praised the Royal Navy, British Expeditionary Force, and armies of the Empire. As the war ended and new challenges arose, George VI spoke of the unity and steadfastness of the Commonwealth and the Empire. Her Majesty the Queen gave her first Christmas message from the same desk and chair that her father and grandfather had used. She pledged to carry on the tradition of Christmas broadcasts and thanked people for their loyalty and affection. She has delivered broadcasts from Sandringham, New Zealand, Buckingham Palace, and Windsor Castle. As technology progressed, she moved the broadcast from radio to television and then to HD, and often incorporates additional footing. This year, the Queen's annual Christmas message will be delivered from Windsor Castle—which is the same location as her two previous addresses of 2020. Last year, in 2019, the Queen said it is “the small steps, not the giant leaps” that bring about lasting change in the world. This was a reference to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission and our own roles in doing good in the world. As always, her message is both timely and utterly timeless.

Podcast Notes Key Takeaways  When Jonathan Sacks first met his wife, the two of them were totally different. However, that wasn’t a bad thing:“It’s the people not like us who make us grow.” – Jonathan SacksA key lesson from The Choice: Nobody can take away our minds“Nobody can take away how we define the situation. And it is that choice that’s the very essence of human freedom, liberty, and dignity.” – Jonathan SacksTwo important lessons Jonathan learned from Lubavitcher Rebbe (one of the most influential Jewish leaders of the 20th century):Good leaders create followers, great leaders create leaders.  You don’t find yourself in a situation. You put yourself in a situation. And thereby, I think you should put yourself in a different situation. You can have an orchestra of the best musicians in the world, but if they don’t work together, the result will be noise, not music:“Whenever I takes over from a place that should be about we, you get catastrophe.” – Jonathan SacksThe US and UK have done a terrible job dealing with COVID-19 because they’re both nations that focus on the individualMeanwhile, countries that have a “We” mentality have done much better:“It is the countries that maintain that balance, like South Korea, like Taiwan, like Singapore, like New Zealand, like Germany. Those are the countries that have coped really well.” – Jonathan SacksWe currently live in an I society in the US, but it doesn’t have to stay that way:“The I society of the 1920s became the we society of post-World War II. And it can be done again.” – Jonathan SacksA true safe space is a place where you listen respectfully to the views of those who disagree with you because you know in return they will listen respectfully to your views, even though they’re opposed to them“Safe space means that courteous discipline of respectful listening, which is being shredded and defiled in too many universities today.”– Jonathan SacksRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgRabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks on Powerful Books, Mystics, Richard Dawkins, and the Dangers of Safe Spaces | Brought to you by Helix Sleep, FreshBooks, and “5-Bullet Friday"“Win the respect of people you respect, and you can forget the rest.” — Rabbi Lord Jonathan SacksRabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (@RabbiSacks) is an international religious leader, philosopher, and respected moral voice. Journalist Hugh Muir travels with Sir Simon Woolley, head of Operation Black Vote, to Buckingham Palace, where he is to receive his knighthood from HM The Queen. It’s a journey that lays bare the dilemma, the joy, the soul-searching and the agony of being honoured for services to the British Empire, for anyone whose family history is one of oppression, slavery or violence as a consequence of the Empire. When Sir Simon heard he had been selected for a knighthood, he felt elation - then anxiety. The offer needed thought. It said much about his lifetime’s work as a political and anti-racist activist, but accepting it could ultimately say much about him and his standing within the community – and not in a good way. Could he take the honour and risk tainting himself with the association between the British honours system and the British Empire? If he took the honour, would the good he might do with it be outweighed by the disapproval it might engender? Sir Simon did some research. He concluded his knighthood was distanced from association with Empire as the title dates back to medieval times. With that comfort, he accepted and was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s List in June. But why should he, or any minority who might qualify for an honour, be forced to agonise in that way? Why should they be placed in the invidious position of having to weigh up the pros and cons of Britain’s most official form of recognition for fear others will think less of them and they might even think less of themselves? The programme includes the views of Benjamin Zephaniah, journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, TV producer Samir Shah, Peaches Golding Lord Lieutenant of Bristol, Novara Media senior editor Ash Sarkar, former MP Tony Wright, and broadcaster Dotun Adebayo. Poet Lemn Sissay discusses his new memoir, My Name Is Why, which tells the story of his fractured childhood within the now infamous Wigan care system in the '60s and '70s. Since then he has gone on to become the official poet of the London 2012 Olympics, the Chancellor of the University of Manchester, and most recently won this year's PEN Pinter Prize. This Friday the BBC Proms celebrates the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth with a concert featuring Stephen Hough who will be playing Victoria’s own gold piano that she bought in 1856. Sally Goodsir from the Royal Collection Trust discusses the history of the grand piano which is being loaned for the first time by HM The Queen, as well as Victoria & Albert's keen enjoyment of music. The new HBO drama Euphoria is an uncompromising look at drug addiction, sex and the exhausting pressure of social media on a group of teenagers. The show has garnered criticism for its controversial depiction of sexual violence among young people desensitised by porn – but how accurate a portrayal of life in Generation Z is it? Critic Annie Lord gives us her take on a show purporting to give a no-holds-barred view of growing up in 2019. Presenter Samira Ahmed Producer Jerome Weatherald
