In this episode, we hear from Jared Lenahan, a US Navy Veteran. He was a combat medic for the Marine Corps known as a Fleet Marine Force Corpsman. After an accident overseas in 2016, he found himself going from climber to paraclimber.   He used adaptive climbing as an integral part of his recovery and has competed as a US Paraclimbing Team Athlete for four years. Jared is also an ambassador for both the National Ability Center and Move United (a Warfighter ambassador for MU). Because the outdoor adaptive community has been so critical to his personal recovery, he started a program to help other wounded warriors get reintegrated into community through adaptive climbing.   This program called “Climbable” introduces warriors to the adaptive sports community before they lose their military community and shows them a streamlined path to transition from recovery to the rest of their lives.   In this interview, Jared and I talk about disability identity, imposter syndrome, addiction, and how climbing as a through-line in his life has guided his life decisions — especially the decision to start Climbable. We recorded this conversation in early 2024 with Jared hoping to officially launch the program by the summer of 2024.

It was a chamber of commerce type weather morning on the campus of Villanova University, and the Morning Roar crew took advantage, broadcasting outside at the Riley Ellipse (aka the Oreo), in honor of WXVU's WXV Needs U fundraiser with a bonus hour! We saluted all donors who have contributed so far, and played incredible audio from Villanova radio alums, including Ian Bush, Jeffrey St. Pierre, Joe Gallagher, and Mary-Beth Fay. The fundraiser has been a major success and will ensure radio at Villanova continues to thrive! In the first hour, we analyzed digital hoarding, and in our Twitter poll question, we discussed what are the best places to study on Villanova's campus. Our special guest in the first hour was Whitey Rigsby, VU Class of 1978 and broadcast voice of the Villanova Wildcats men's basketball team on the radio for 43 years. Whitey currently works as a Senior Major Gifts Officer for the Villanova Athletic Fund. Whitey was incredibly generous with his time, and talked to the crew about his 3-year career on the Villanova basketball team, his favorite moments calling Wildcats' basketball games, and gave advice for those aspiring for a career in sports broadcasting. In the bonus hour, Ryan Dery joined the crew and talked with Allison about how the duo teamed up to save the stray cat on Villanova's campus, Austin. Our second very special set of guests was Taffy the Dog, a 2-year-old female yellow Labrador/Golden Retriever and Villanova's first full-time “community canine” and therapy dog. Taffy's caretaker, Officer Amy Lenahan from Villanova Public Safety, came by to talk about Taffy and how Villanova community members can soon make appointments to see her! John Lenahan came to Britain from his native Philadelphia for a short trip and has never quite made it back.   John originally grabbed the headlines as the first person in 85 years to be expelled from the Magic Circle. His own BBC2 series, Stuff The White Rabbit, achieved record ratings for the slot. Other TV credits include presenting the travelogue Open Road, playing the voice of the toaster in Red Dwarf, and guest appearances on everything from TFI Friday to Celebrity Squares. He also fronted HoaxBusters, an ITV network show lifting the lid on scams and hoaxes. John has performed onstage all over the world, from Beijing and Dubai to Dublin. He has toured alongside Jack Dee, Victoria Wood, Lenny Henry and Michael Ball. Besides all this, Lenahan is one of the most successful corporate entertainers in the country. Apart from his show-stealing cabaret, he has made kitchens appear, taught Bank of England staff to juggle, read thousands of minds and levitated a 20-pound Toblerone bar. He was the first person on record to perform magic live over the Internet, for BT. Sports have been a huge part of Navy Veteran Jared Lenahan's life. As he gets older, he continues to find himself more involved in sports. It was while he was climbing in Italy that Jared fell to the ground, sustaining significant injuries. But that hasn't stopped him. Nor has it altered his love and passion for climbing.
