He was born in Eisenach, in what is now central Germany. Bach lived from 1685 to 1750, The Baroque period was a 150-year period in music, dating from 1600 to 1750. Baroque music is Western Classical Music that followed the Renaissance period. Baroque music features drama, ornamentation, major and minor tones, and was presented in new ways – – like the Opera, Concerto, and Sonata, Baroque composers included BACH, HANDEL, VIVALDI. M9 AIR ON A G-STRING, JS BACH, 1730, BWV 1068 (2:27). Bach probably used the CLAVICHORD to compose most of his music. The Clavichord is small, lightweight and would not disturb people. The clavichord was very temperamental, because it required tuning before each play, just like a violin or guitar. The keyboard instruments of the day were referred to as a general category: the “KLAVIER”….these included HARPSICHORD, CLAVICHORD, ORGAN and PIANOFORTE. Bach's favorite KLAVIER instrument was the LAUTENWERK or LUTE HARPSICHORD with animal gut strings. The writing of music was in support of GOD and KINGS. Over time, Baroque Music evolved into what is today known as the modern Orchestra. Bach was a prolific composer, writing hundreds of pieces for solo instruments, particularly the organ. He also wrote pieces for orchestra and choir. Bach is MOST known for writing two or more melodies or voices against each other. Also called point against point, or, Counterpoint. Bit Bucket A BWV catalog number is a unique identifier for musical works composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, standing for Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis (Bach Works Catalogue). Today I will present 9 compositions, dating from 1710 to 1731, during the time Bach was about age 25 to 45. M1 TOCCATA & FUGUE in C MAJOR M.2 ADAGIO, 1710-1717, BWV 564 (4:20) Our first piece — TOCATA & FUGUE in C MAJOR , the 2nd movement (ADAGIO). an ORGAN COMPOSITION. It is taken from a 1959 album of BACH ORGAN WORKS . The movement is called ADAGIO ….which indicates “At Ease”, or “Slow and Stately”. Tempo is only 66-76 BPM. like the resting heart rate for many people. Great liner notes. HERE IS AN excerpt from the liner notes on that album – – QUOTE “OUR BACH” said the obituary notice, “was the greatest organ and clavier player that ever lived”. Though it may seem strange to us now, Bach's genius during his life was recognized only as a master of the organ—not as a composer. It was actually over a hundred years after his death that his works revealed him as a unique and mighty composer. His reputation as an organist brought many invitations to test new organs and advise on the construction of them. UNQUOTE As with most of his organ works , there is no autograph or manuscript score from Bach, his organ work manuscript copies are lost. This song has a CONCERTO style and rhythm. We will hear the 2nd or ADAGIO movement. . It is all very calm and beautiful and pastoral and serene…until Bach pulls out all the stops in the last minute of this ADAGIO movement. He is really rocking the walls and windows of that church. Without any further adieu, here is TOCATA & FUGUE in C MAJOR , the 2nd movement (ADAGIO). PLAY M2 SHOW PLUG – DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL ! M2 NUN KOMM DER HEIDEN HEILAND, JS BACH, 1714, BWV 61 (5:21) Our next piece is the most famous church cantata written in 1714 for THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT. NUN KOMM DER HEIDEN HEILAND or in English “NOW COME, SAVIOR OF THE HEATHANS” A HEATHAN is a person with no religion, i.e., a PAGAN. In this chorale, Jesus is asked to … come and save the pagans. In 1714, Bach would have been 29 years of age. It turns out that this song goes back almost two centuries before BACH's time. It's based on a LUTERAN CHORALE with words written by Martin Luther for the 1523 first Advent Sunday. For centuries, this was the first hymn for the first Sunday of ADVENT. What I will play next is an arrangement for as modern symphony orchestra (the Philadelphia Orchestra) and it is definitely JS BACH heard in those phrases. But it is a large orchestra – – Conducted by Leopold Stokowski. This is an extremely restrained, demure, and understated interpretation of a Bach piece the most restrained I have ever heard. The recording you will hear next is performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, with conductor Leopold Stokowski. This recording is on a Vinyl LP titled THE SOUND OF GENIUS, produced by COLUMBIA MASTERWORKS, in 1960. It was one of many records that were shipped by mail to members of the Columbia Record Club. ZAHN 1174 M3 TWO-PART INVENTION in F MAJOR, JS BACH, 1720-1723 (0:40) The next three pieces are called TWO PART INVENTIONS, composed by JS Bach around 1720 The inventions were composed for use in instruction of Bach's oldest son WILHELM FRIEDEMANN BACH who was 12 years old. Today, these inventions are introduced to music students in school grades 4-7. Learning the Two-Part Invention requires ROTE learning, practicing over and over until the two hands work completely independently of one another. The inventions teach, among other things, the use of COUNTERPOINT. Bach is MOST known for writing two melodies against each other. Also called point against point, or, Counterpoint. That is the feature of these inventions, in each one there are TWO PARTS, left and right hand parts. COUNTERPOINT is found mostly in Bach's FUGUES and in his INVENTIONS. Perhaps a brief demonstration is in order. Here is an excerpt from one of Bach's inventions. FIRST the right-hand part or first point – the melody SECOND the left-hand part or second point – the bass line LAST both parts played in counterpoint. In some of Bach works, the roles reverse, The left hand plays the first point – the melody And the right hand plays the second point – the bass line Could you do this by crossing hands on the keyboard – yes, but, the roles are reversed, so no cross-hand playing. I will now play WENDY CARLOS's rendition of three BACH TWO-PART INVENTIONS from her 1969 recording titled “SWITCHED ON BACH” .. I will play all three, back-to-back. This title comes from Johann Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, written almost 300 years ago. So what is the meaning of the song title Air on a G-String? Well, Bach composed this as an orchestral suite in 1730. 141 years later, August Wilhelm arranged the second movement for SOLO VIOLIN and he did something unique. He transposed the song down from D so that the entire piece could be played on one string of the violin, the G-String, which is the lowest register on that instrument. Here is an example of what this sounds like on the Violin G-String, thjs example with piano accompaniment—pardon the scratchy sound, is from an old 78 RPM disc in 1935. Out today under my instrumental Sleeping Animal pseudonym is a composition entitled Stream. It's a measured and minimal eleven minute miniature suite for electric piano and synthesizers. Look for Stream today, July 25, 2025 on all streaming services.I'm over half way through the release schedule of Sleeping Animal releases that took shape pretty quickly at the beginning of this year. My hope was that they might find an audience outside the niche I've cultivated with my penchant for field recording taking a co-equal, or maybe even primary role in my music. It seems like a fine time to reflect on how the Sleeping Animal experiment is going. If you're interested in this, by all means read on. If it's not what you signed up for, feel free to skip it. Neo-classical, Chilly Gonzales, Mood Music, and What Now?I'm thinking about an essay by Chilly Gonzales entitled Why I Regret Giving Birth to the Neoclassical Genre that opens with this paragraph:It's usually a forest, or a mountainside, or a beach. Ideally, it's an otherworldly volcanic terrain, maybe in Iceland. A piano sits conspicuously in the middle of this landscape, as a pianist with eyes closed exaggerates the effort required to present some familiar arpeggios on the white keys. This is Neoclassical music, a genre I may have birthed, and I hate myself for it.I had to laugh. This was accurately calling out Sleeping Animal before it even came to be. It's usually a forest. Check. Familiar arpeggios on the white keys. Fair enough. I mean, I'm pretty comfortable on the black keys too, but I tend to follow familiar pathways when composing, so touché, and ouch!In this essay Gonzales reflects on his 2004 solo piano release, aptly entitled Solo Piano, offered up as a curveball to the “electro-hipster” fanbase he garnered in the preceding years.Back in 2004 my music business contacts saw my Solo Piano transformation as career suicide. Nobody thought of solitary piano music as a potential gravy train. But here we are, the algorithm has spoken and background music is now big business.Playlists like Peaceful Piano or Music for Studying have turbo-charged the monetisation of functional background music. These playlists pay, albeit badly. And when the playlists pay, the industry pays attention…The essay was published in September last year. While the Peaceful Piano playlist is still a gravy train for the premiere names of the genre, the chill playlist diaspora have been largely reprogrammed with “ghost artists”. (In a nutshell, ghost artists are fictional artist identities given to tracks created by for-hire studio musicians willing to crank out original songs to fit a mood, all in an obfuscated scheme to cut costs for the platform.) Today, the few high traffic playlist slots that remain for real artists might be the last of the low hanging fruit for the AI-generated music tidal wave that we are being warned about. I'm not ashamed to say that the invention of Sleeping Animal was in part an experiment to see if I could grow my streaming income by diversifying. I said that much from the get-go, calling it a spin off.Gonzales relayed an anecdote about the allure of chasing playlists: A musician friend of mine worked painstakingly for years on a complex and challenging album only to hear from his record label that “we love it but we feel we could invest more of our time, energy and money if you would add something for the fans of Ludovico Einaudi”. In other words, to become Zweinaudi or Dreinaudi. It's difficult to resist this pressure. It wasn't long before my friend went back to the studio and aimed a few more pieces squarely at the “peaceful piano” bullseye. And worst of all, my friend and the label were rewarded mightily for their capitulation. But really, worst of all? This seems a bit holier than thou, honestly. So, real artists only make complex, challenging music and never think about earning a living?I watched the 2019 documentary, Shut up and Play the Piano, profiling Gonzales several years ago. He exudes main character energy in the film in a way that's almost hard to watch: complex, bedeviled, and willing to go to extremes to compensate for something—we're not sure what. A sibling rivalry? Imposter syndrome from portraying himself as a musical genius, while struggling to read beginner level sheet music? For all the vulnerable sequences and observations in the film, there's an equal number of clips cultivating a chameleonic chicanery.I am one of the many devotees to Gonzales' solo piano works. These albums featured minimalist black and white drawings, evoking the trope of a serious, studied artiste. His cover for Solo Piano III went so far as to insinuate technical prowess: three disembodied hands dancing across the surface of a piano keyboard. I bought it. I thought he was a piano genius. In a way, both he and the movie pulled the rug out from under fans like me. I wasn't sure how to feel about it.When I listen to Gonzales' solo piano pieces, I hear sincerity, depth, melody, sophistication. They want for nothing, to my ear. Did that opening paragraph in his essay ring so true because it cuts close to home? A lot of ink has been spilled about the dumbing down of musical taste at the hands of tech overlords and opportunistic hacks in service of the playlist era, serving up mood music: frictionless, dull, generic background music to soundtrack one's aspirational chill. It's hard to shake the fear that my own catalogue isn't also being dragged through the mud with this critique. A lot of hand-wringing and dislocation will certainly play out in the dawning era of AI in the music industry. The neo-classical, and lo-fi beats genres that populate so many chill and focus playlists will almost certainly be inundated. How are artists like myself to navigate the shifting sands?Ten to twenty years after they were released, Chilly Gonzales' solo piano albums sound timeless. To me, they are classics. I hope to feel something similar for my own work after the passing of many years. That's my aim. This is a public episode. Seong-Jin Cho, the 30-year-old pianist and winner of the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, has been entrusted by Deutsche Grammophon to spearhead the company's celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great French composer, Maurice Ravel. The first release, out on January 17, contains the complete solo piano works, and the second, due on February 21, is of the two piano concertos (a live recording with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons). Gramophone's James Jolly caught up with Seong-Jin Cho just after the pianist had performed the complete solo works in a single evening in Liechtenstein to talk about Ravel's important contribution to the piano repertoire.

Send us a textWhen I heard the Chilly Gonzales song Neoclassical Massacre, I immediately got in touch with his management and label to get Gonzo on the Art of Longevity. Not only are his views on AI and background music incisive, but Gonzo has some strong opinions about the music industry and the modern culture in which it operates. The ever-evolving tension between creativity and commerce has been a career-long exploration for Gonzo. It makes him the perfect guest for The Art of Longevity. Indeed, his own career has been a perfect metaphorical rollercoaster of ups and downs. After a few years on the scene as an alternative/performance artist (which he very much is right now) he had surprise success with a quiet piano instrumental album Solo Piano (2004). Only to follow up with a full-on 70s influenced pop album, launching a brief and unspectacular phase as a major label pop artist. “That first Solo Piano surprise success was a foundational moment in encouraging me to continue to take risks. When and if I wanna go back there it will be a very beautiful thing, so long as I am doing it for the right reasons, there is something fluffy and safe about it for me.”As for the pop record Soft Power, it became his “misunderstood masterpiece”, demonstrating very nicely that you can always make failures part of your narrative after the fact. “It became an opportunity for me to make it a retrospective part of my mythology - injecting a bit of drama to my career”. Fluffy and safe isn't a typical Chilly Gonzales career choice. Indeed, on the new self-titled album, he returns to his alternative origins, rapping on most tracks. And without doubt, he is a scholar of Rap - not only on a musical level, but on a cultural level. Rap seems more influential on his career than his impeccable classical training. No other musician I can think of blends the two in such an inimitable way. As such, on new album Gonzo, the songs come across as both avant garde and yet hugely entertaining at the same time. “The best works of art will always function on a superficial level that brings you in - everybody is on the same page now - we are all trying to succeed by having a catchy song that can live on 20 second snippets on TikTok but artists who are doing it at the highest levels are still managing to sneak in a deeper artistic meaning or holding up a mirror to society. “Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan or Melanie Martinez…you can tell their goal is for their music to exist on both levels…that's something that Rap gifted culture”.It also gifted us Chilly Gonzales and for that we are eternally grateful.
More and more, I've been collecting solo piano records, I imagine partly because I grew up listening to my mom play piano and partly because my ears have slowed down a bit as I've gotten older. Here's a first short stack of some favorites, which won't be the last. I have continued to be working with just one needle for most of this month, and this "mix" was admittedly done on just one turntable. But I just got my replacement styluses yesterday and I will be getting back to the usual programming soon! Tracklist: Shock G, Herbie Hancock, Mal Waldron, Dollar Brand, McCoy Tyner, Joe Chambers, Stanley Cowell

Taking private lessons can seen never ending. In fact, most of the time, it IS never ending. You never really know if you're getting better because the teacher doesn't give you any goals, benchmarks or assessments. You'll definitely want to save this lesson and download it. With the benchmarks and assessments I show you in this video, your practice will be more efficient, you'll be more motivated and inspired, and you'll without a sliver of doubt KNOW if you're getting better. This tip that I will teach you in literally one minute has the power to drastically change your solo piano sound instantly. Don't believe me? Well there is only one thing I have left to say...try it. It isn't for everyone because you might be well beyond this, but if you're playing LH root position chords with RH single note melody lines...then you absolutely need to watch this. Even if you think you're an intermediate or advanced player, try to do this with some tunes. If you can't...it might be a good time to working on your fundamentals so you can integrate this into your playing. This step will allow you to add many more advanced concepts into your playing with ease.
