Welcome my friends to season 3 of the Determined to Dance podcast. My prayer is that you'll be encouraged to persevere daily in our chaotic world. Today's episode, Learning to Let Go, focuses on the fear that says we always need to be in control. Show notes: Learning to Let Go How many of y'all like things to go your way? Like to row your ducks? A place for everything and everything in its place. You know, the job, the spouse, kids, grandkids, church. And let's not forget the house, neighborhood, and school. So many that need our help—uh—advice—our control? I'm raising my hand. I sure would like for God to ask me at the beginning of each day about my plans and how he could help them come to pass. But it doesn't quite work that way. I mean, where would find the faith that we need to please God if it's all up to us? “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6 NKJV We are back to believing that He is God and big enough to handle our lives and that we are to be seeking, not taking the lead. Ouch. Again, I repent and give it all to Him. Often, several times a day. Here's our episode two quote from Jeff Walling. “Dancing with God is allowing him to take our breath away as he whirls us through the dark and light places that life leads us. It is relaxing into his embrace and trusting fully in his strong arms. It is releasing the power of the Spirit within us to give us joy beyond measure. It is reveling in the unexpected and celebrating the divine surprise that is each new day. It is rejoicing out loud at the grace and beauty God provides and ignoring the calls of the crowd to sit down and quit grinning. But above all else, dancing with God is learning to let go.” Why do I even want to be in control? Usually, because I feel afraid. Sometimes, because I feel guilty or ashamed for something I've done or didn't do. There are days when I'm afraid and guilty for sins I've committed and things I didn't do all wrapped up in one. Not what Jesus went to the cross and died for—this state of mind where my focus is once again on me, me, me. A couple of weeks ago, I had one of those days. I needed to cancel a family member's minor surgery and reschedule it again. Mainly, because I'd come down with Covid and they'd been around me. So, we had guilt right off the bat. I waited for the nurse to call me back but she didn't. Fear instantly attacked. What did I even say to them in my feverish condition? Did they not understand me and go ahead and set up for surgery because of my botched-up state of mind? Fear, guilt, and all kind of junk piled on me. I wish I could say that I stopped it right then, called on the name of Jesus and the power of the blood, and went on my way singing Onward, Christian Soldiers. That probably would have been the right thing to do but instead, I wallowed in self-pity for a few days, then finally stopped what was going on. God knew I tried to do right and I had to believe that he was in control. If I messed up, I'd apologize to whoever I could and try to make it right. But ultimately I needed to leave it in the hands of a mighty, caring Father who has my back. And yours. So, remember: Give your life, and your control to God, the only One who can truly make it right. Give your fears to God and watch Him turn them into faith. Give your guilt/shame to God and hear His sweet whispers of forgiveness. I find it much easier to dance when I'm not juggling the suitcases of fear, control, guilt, and shame. Grabbing hold instead of grace, love, peace, and faith makes more sense and is a much lighter load. Let's pray: Father God, we come to you with overfilled hands, minds, and hearts. We can't bear the heavy burden of control that we lay on our own lives. Take it all, Father. The good, the bad, the sin, the joy, everything we hold dear, and much more.

Jesus questioned the practices and traditions of the elders. He shared that is from within out of a person's heart, that evil comes. Jesus wanted the hearts of his people, not just their outward actions. This encounters with the Pharisees and teachers of the law demonstrated what is "clean" according to God and our need for God's cleansing work in our hearts.

(Early upload! Enjoy!) Story written by Ahsoka-2Sabers on Wattpad! Link: https://www.wattpad.com/user/Ahsoka-2Sabers The door shuts and locks behind you and you finally can breathe. It's hard to believe it was only a few days ago a young amnesiac paid you ten thousand dollars to drive him to Paris. It was stupid. A stranger pays you a large sum of money–in cash upfront–to drive him alone to his house. You should have known better, but you were desperate. Now you're on the run because whoever is chasing Bourne has your picture, your life, and is after you, too. Your fingers comb through your rain-soaked, newly chopped and dyed hair. This is your life now. You shrug off your bag with the few possessions you took from your car and let it thump on the floor. Grabbing your most comfortable clothes, you rush to the bathroom and work through your routine as quickly as possible, eager for the long-awaited rest. You exit five minutes later to find Jason sitting on the floor at the foot of the bed. Blue eyes stare into nothing, head tilted as he listens. He snaps out of it to look at you. A soft, almost awkward smile tugs at his lips. “I'll take the floor,” he says, laying back on the rug before you could protest. It's cold and the hotel provides little heat. You could have met anyone when you accepted that ten thousand dollars. You were lucky enough to meet a gentleman. A gentleman tormented by a past he can't remember. Ever since you've known Jason, he's been determined, eager to figure out who he is. Today, he seems… defeated, lost, confused. You wonder if he remembered something. You leave him to his thoughts as you crawl into bed, wishing there was more you could do. You whisper goodnight and it's answered by silence. Running water through a faucet draws you to wakefulness. You blink away the heavy drowsiness and throw the sheets aside. You make your presence known as you approach the bathroom. Jason is leaning over the sink, knuckles turning white around the porcelain. Sweat pours off of his shaking frame. He looks at you through the mirror and your heart aches for the anguish you see. “Jason…” “I don't want to know who I am anymore.” His whispers are broken, raw. You step closer and touch his shoulder. The muscles twitch beneath your cold fingers, but he doesn't pull away. “I don't care. I don't want to know.” “Come back to bed. We'll–” “Everything I found out. I want to forget.” “It's okay.” “I don't care who I am or what I did.” “It's okay,” you repeat helplessly, unable to find the magic words to take his pain away. Jason turns to you, expression sharp with a sudden idea. “We have the money. We can hide. Could we do that? Is there any chance you can do that?” Warmth floods your chilled body. We. For a moment, you fantasize the idea. It wouldn't be much different from now. You would be constantly on the run. No home, no place to stay. More drafty hotel rooms like this one. Always looking over your shoulder, always listening, always watching. Good thing you were a wandering spirit, never settling in one place for long. It would be difficult, but you would have him. “Maybe,” you say instead, kissing his cheek. “Come back to bed. You need sleep.” He lets you lead him back into the room. He pauses before the rug on the floor, so you nudge him to the bed. You both crawl in, the small space forcing you together. It was not unlike another hotel room in Paris on another cold night, yet also so different. You switch on the radio on your nightstand and let classical music fill the room. Immediately, Jason leans over and tries to turn it off. “The music. I can't hear–” “Shhh,” you soothe him as you turn the volume down to the lowest setting. “It's okay. I'll turn it off once you're asleep. Just relax.” You rub circles around his back and eventually you see the tension leave his body. A few moments later, you hear his soft, deep breaths of sleep. You listen, comforted by it. This is your life now.

Barbara Sanders, Gettysburg National Military Park Residents of Gettysburg and Adams County were not just passive observers of the 1863 battle. Its citizens included men who fought on both sides of the conflict, women who took in or traveled to the wounded after the battle, African Americans who dug the graves for the dead, and generations who worked to support the community from its modest time as county seat of government, to the site of a major battle, host of veterans' reunions, and creation of a National Park. Stories of its most noteworthy townspeople will illuminate this ever-changing community as a microcosm of a nation moving forward from immense conflict to create a universal symbol of freedom, sacrifice, equality and democracy. Civilian Casualties at Gettysburg Most people who study the American Civil War are aware that there were some 51,000 casualties associated with the Battle of Gettysburg. But when asked the number of civilian casualties the answer is invariably “just one.” And although Jennie Wade, was in fact, the only civilian killed during the actual battle, there are others who died as a direct result of the fighting. A number of other civilians were wounded, and still others were taken prisoner. Depending on how you count, there are as many as 30 civilian casualties. Join Tim Smith, for the last of this winter's Sunday lectures this year, as he discusses the story of the lesser-known civilians who were casualties of the battle. The Farnsworth House at Gettysburg is once again hosting a winter Sunday lectures series featuring local historian Timothy H. Smith. As always, the groups will meet at Sweney's Tavern, with the programs starting at 6 p.m. Food and drinks are available, before, during, and after the program with weekly specials. Parking is available in rear of the Farnworth House. John Hoptak, Gettysburg National Military Park On the evening of April 18, 1861, less than 72 hours after the surrender of Fort Sumter and President Abraham Lincoln's subsequent call-to-arms, the very first Northern volunteer soldiers arrived in the nation's beleaguered capital. Although long overshadowed in history by the more famous 6th Massachusetts Infantry, these soldiers composed the ranks of five companies of Pennsylvania militia who later became known as the "First Defenders." Attacked by a pro-secessionist/pro-Confederate mob in Baltimore on their journey south to Washington, these First Defenders shed some of the very first blood of what would become the country's bloodiest conflict. Included among those injured was Nicholas "Nick" Biddle, a sixty-five-year-old African American man who may have had escaped from slavery, and who now wore the uniform of one of the Pennsylvania companies. Join John Hoptak for a look at the fascinating life and story of Biddle, and the history of these lesser-known companies, their prompt response, and their place in American Civil War history. Jeff Irwin, Gettysburg National Miliary Park Gettysburg National Military Park has been rehabilitating both the Devil's Den as well as the Little Round Top. Archeologists have been conducting metal detector sweeps of areas where ground disturbance was anticipated. The archeological findings have the potential to shed light on the activities of individuals during and immediately following the fight. The program will highlight some of the current findings. This coupled with firsthand narrative accounts allows the park to enhance our understanding and interpretation. There are many kinds of architects in the tech industry. While they don't draw building schematics, they do put together blueprints for programs, systems, networks. What does it take to effectively build solutions to technical problems? And how do you learn those skills? Grabbing tools out of a box and assembling them into a working whole is the starting point. Architects consider a customer's needs and how those are affected by the particular combinations. And as it turns out, keeping an eye on available tools has some pivotal advantages.

John Heiser, Historian In the summer of 1913, Pennsylvania invited thousands of Union and Confederate veterans to come to Gettysburg to observe and celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, what many considered to be the "High Water Mark the Rebellion". The response from veterans of the Blue and Gray was overwhelming - over 54,000 old soldiers journeyed to a battlefield skillfully transformed by a government commission into a memorial park, where the armies of both North and South would forever be memorialized. Critics scoffed that old enemies could never get along, the divisions that caused the war in 1861 having not been forgotten. But America was changing at home and abroad and those who chose to ignore this commemoration were surprised at its outcome. Was this "Great Reunion" finally the signal of national reunification so many had hoped for fifty years after the final shot had been fired? Troy Harman, Gettysburg National Military Park Did the Southern Army investigate Culp's Hill before attacking it? It is imagined the Southern Army attacked Culp's Hill for two days without knowing what they were walking into, or how impossible the task. It is generally presumed that if some forethought and investigation of the ground and circumstances had been carried out earlier, the 12 hours of combat there may never have occurred. How much truth is there to hastily attacking the hill without prior knowledge of Union strength, location, and morale? Troy Harman will explore and explain through multiple vivid accounts, illustrations, and maps.
