What separates exceptional fitness equipment from merely functional gear? According to Niall Wogan, founder and CEO of Verve Fitness, it's the perfect blend of stunning aesthetics, rock-solid functionality, and customer service that actually cares. In this fascinating conversation, Niall shares his global entrepreneurial journey that spans continents—from Ireland to South Africa to Los Angeles and finally Australia's Gold Coast. With refreshing candour, he reveals how Verve was born from a simple observation: gym owners were stuck choosing between low-quality equipment with poor service or premium gear delivered with arrogance. The market needed someone to do the simple things exceptionally well.Niall takes us behind the scenes of product development at Verve, explaining how collaborating with a former Nike designer revolutionised their equipment's form and function. "If something looks really attractive and alluring, you're drawn to it and want to use it more," he explains, challenging the "weight is just weight" mindset that overlooks how the environment impacts training motivation. This philosophy manifests in thoughtful design choices like their signature power racks—built as "racks for life" with an ecosystem of attachments that grow with your training journey. The conversation takes a personal turn when Niall shares his own fitness regimen, including his recent foray into Brazilian jiu-jitsu and his unwavering commitment to daily ice baths. "It's non-negotiable," he explains, describing how this practice builds mental toughness that translates to business challenges. His experiment with daily saunas yielded surprising performance improvements in his 5K run times—concrete evidence of how recovery modalities can enhance performance.Looking toward the future, Niall sees personalisation as the defining trend in fitness—a shift from merely "getting a sweat going" to caring for the whole person. This vision aligns perfectly with Verve's ethos of creating equipment that not only functions flawlessly but inspires users to become greater than they were yesterday. For anyone building a gym or considering entrepreneurship in the fitness space, this episode delivers practical wisdom wrapped in genuine passion. As Niall puts it, success comes from being clear on your "why"—because when challenges inevitably arise, that purpose will sustain you through the toughest decisions.Ready to transform your training environment or business approach? Press play and discover how doing the simple things extraordinarily well might be the innovation you've been seeking.
For episode two, we fast-forward two decades to 2017 and Mindhorn. Written by and starring Julian Barrett and frequent collaborator Simon Farnaby. If you're a fan of Bergerac, you'll love Mindhorn, the 80s sci-fi cop who can see the truth. Someone who is a big fan of this film is musician, producer, and podcaster Ricardo Autobahn, AKA John Matthews, who joined us to discuss his love for the Isle-of-Man-com. As well as Mindhorn, we chatted at length about 00s cult sitcom Nathan Barley, which, of course, starred Julian Barrett and was ahead of its time, to say the very least. So strap in for Geek Pies, Sugar Apes, and Trashbats, as well as Windjammers, Moonshafts, and Nutmegs. It's time for Mindhorn! Al McKenna stars as iconic broadcaster Terry Wogan in Wogan's Sweet Sixteen by Kenneth Sweeney.
David Cloake is a former professional DJ whom I have had the great pleasure to know since working at Cabin FM. We learn about David's career in radio, beginning with a chat about the pre-digital radio world. We find out how David got into radio, starting at Southern Sound, about the advice he received from other presenters, and how he received elocution lessons. David's first full time radio gig was at Northants Radio where he did the Drivetime show, and we learn that David followed a traditional route. We discuss the changes that came about after the mid-90s and how deregulation is the cornerstone of change as it enabled ownership to be more businesslike. We also learn about what community radio is able to provide. We find out that David wanted to be a radio presenter from a young age, and how the people who have influenced David include Richard Allinson and Terry Wogan (and we hear a wonderful Wogan anecdote). We discuss the differences between live and pre-recorded radio and the importance of the one to one style, and about the evolution of radio and the role of personalities and the importance of brand, where either presenters are the style or the presenters have to fit the style. This leads us to discuss the shelf life of radio presenters and how this impacted David personally, including how brutal his own demise was at Severn Sound. David talks about how this was a life lesson. He now works in emergency and disaster management where his is a senior management professional and consultant who specialises in emergency and crisis management, business continuity management, risk management and broader business planning consultancy. He is the founder of Foresight Solutions. David credits Steve Ralph for encouraging him to join Cabin FM, and we learn that David also volunteers at Herne Bay Football Club. David gives his thoughts on nostalgia and how he prefers reflection to nostalgia. We find whether David still has recordings of his old radio shows from the 80s and 90s, and we discuss mental health and the importance of not trying to seek revenge on what people did to you in the past. Then, at the end of the interview, we find out whether David is a looking back or a looking forward sort of person, and why one can shape a future more than one can shape a past.
Alan Dedicoat has been one of the most recognised voices in the United Kingdom for 45 years, having cemented himself as "The Voice of Balls", "The Voice of Strictly" and the work he has done for BBC Radio 2.In this weeks Radio Greats, Dedley sits down with Luke to share stories of the past 45 years, from getting the bug for Radio. Starting out on BBC Radio Birmingham, launching BBC Radio Devon to getting an attachment with Radio 2 as an Announcer that lead to him presenting programmes including "Nightride", reading the news and being part of the team of "Wake up to Wogan", before leaving in 2015 to enter the world of Freelance.Big Thanks to Richard Latto and Andy Walmsley for the use of content.
Aled Jones has been famous since he was only 13, when he was a choirboy at Bangor Cathedral in North Wales with a beautiful voice. In this interview he tells Gyles about his first ever public performance, in a village hall on Anglesey; about how he was discovered and asked to record an album, and about his incredible, and rapid, rise to fame. The next 4 years were a whirlwind - trips to London to be on Wogan, best-selling albums and Top of the Pops, a concert in the Hollywood Bowl in LA, singing at Paula Yates and Bob Geldof's wedding - Aled tells Gyles about all this, and about how his down-to-earth parents supported him and kept his feet on the ground. Thank you to Aled for bringing all these stories to life so vividly and for this charming interview. Enjoy this! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
This week on @monday_mile_series, it's me and @markwogan13 – the culinary legend behind @spooningwithmarkwogan and @homesliceldn It's a chat full of food and fitness this week, and there's no better man to do it with. As a person with a self-described addictive personality, Mark has lived a life of extremes. These days, though, he's all about balance: he treats his body well with ice baths and exercise, but he also fuels himself with perfect pizza from his restaurant Homeslice. He only eats the whole thing occasionally. And of course, we chat about his hit podcast Spooning, which is NOT about cuddling in bed, I discovered. Head over to Mark's page to see my episode with @katyajones – right after listening to Monday Mile of course. Thank you Mark for such an interesting and introspective chat! Hello All! We're back with a traditional episode this week. This time diving back into the Interview Archives (as we've done in the past) with Paul (& Linda's) appearance from November 1987 on the UK BBC1 Programme Wogan, hosted by Terry Wogan. We've re-edited in the performances of 'Jet', 'Once Upon A Long Ago' and 'Listen To What The Man Said' as the interview on YouTube had these cut. Paul had made appearances on Wogan in the past, (1986) and made future appearances in 1989 and 1990. The purpose of this visit was to continue to the heavy promotional blitz he was doing at the time to promote All The Best! which was already certified platinum in the UK by this time. You'll see Terry present him with a gift of it. We also discuss the recent additions to the GOT BACK tour and overall shows for the fall. Exciting times for Macca fans! We hope you're all doing well. Summer is here! Did you watch this episode live when it premiered? Let us know! Peace Andy & Tom
I get to interview someone I have been a fan of for years and years today - the brilliant and iconic Helen Lederer (Ledgenderer more like. It's going to catch on). I found the clip of her on Wogan that I mention in the intro. To make it even more enthralling, it's a real pleasure to see how confused Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan are by the whole thing. Forgot they were on the sofa too! Watch that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIvbOA8XLgw We talk about trying to phone Mickey Dolenz from the payphone at school; crushing on George Harrison; and dating artists. We also talk about Helen's new book "Not That I'm Bitter", which lifts the lid behind the scenes of the comedy world of the 1980s and 90s. It's been described as frank and funny and a bit mad - which I'm pleased to say was exactly how she was in person too. Have I said that I'm interviewing Three Bean Salad's own Henry Paker for the live show at Mach? If I haven't, I'm saying it now. I think there are a couple of tickets still left, so if you'll be at Mach, please come and join us. And come and say hi! https://machcomedyfest.co.uk/show/2024/margaret-cabourn-smith-crushed/ I think that's all the admin for this week. Welcome to another episode of Trve. Cvlt. Pop!, a full on podcast about music innit. This week marks the 60th anniversary of the legendary performance by The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show on the 9th of February 1964. So, we decided to celebrate by looking at some of Gaz's favourite performances by bands in the years since. We go from art-pop with Wogan to glam rock with Jimmy Kimmel, stopping off for novelty grunge hits on Letterman and greasy rock and roll on TFI Friday along the way. We also have a quick chat about the recent Grammys and MOBO awards and pay tribute to the late Wayne Kramer of The MC5, who passed away this week. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Hey everyone, the last episode of 2023 is here - and it is a SPECIAL one. I'm speaking with Ian Wogan from Treesources. Ian and I initially met at Sacred Sons Convergence 8 in Los Angeles and reconnected in Miami when I visited him and his family for a couple of days during my trip. Ian is an arborist, entrepreneur, father, devoted husband, and environmentalist. His life's work is dedicated to the protection, conservation, and stewardship of nature and landscapes within urban environments. Treesources stemmed out of the need to responsibly grow and incorporate our ecological resources within our ever-changing modern environment. Ian's team consists of conservationists, scientists, arborists, and designers. Ian had an immensely valuable and a deep effect on me and my personal development. His devotion, dedication, sincerity, and integrity are traits and values that I got to deeply admire and respect. I've learned so much about life, decision-making, fatherhood, responsibility, integrity, authenticity, nature, trees, and our ecosystem from Ian that I'm certain you'll get a lot out of this episode. That being said, THANK YOU ALL so much for your amazing support throughout my first year of podcasting. It has been an honor to serve all of you in this way and through these conversations. I'll work even harder in 2024 to deliver the best work and content for you to enjoy and get inspired by. Much love.

Lifeforce (aka Space Vampires) is a 1985 science fiction horror film directed by Tobe Hooper, adapted by Dan O'Bannon (writer of Alien!) and Don Jakoby, and starring Steve Railsback, Peter Firth, Frank Finlay, Mathilda May, and Patrick Stewart. It also features John Forbes-Robertson as ‘The Minister' The film is based on Colin Wilson's 1976 novel, The Space Vampires. It portrays the events that unfold after a trio of humanoids in a state of suspended animation are brought to Earth after being discovered in the hold of an alien spaceship. This was the first film of Hooper's three-picture deal with Cannon Films, the other two films are the remake of Invaders from Mars and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Prior to Lifeforce, Hooper was originally offered the script for E.T. but turned it down. Spielberg then suggested Hooper direct Poltergeist, a project he had written himself and had planned on directing. he took the job and Spielberg went on directed E.T. (and most people also believe Poltergeist as well) Before Hooper, Michael Winner was offered the Lifeforce director's gig, but it didn't work out. And Billy Idol said he had been offered a lead role as a vampire by Hooper, who had directed the video for "Dancing with Myself", but turned it down due to touring commitments. It has been suggested that this is a remake of Hammer Film Productions' Quatermass and the Pit. In an interview, director Tobe Hooper discussed how Cannon Films gave him $25 million, free rein, and Colin Wilson's book The Space Vampires. Hooper then shares how giddy he was: "I thought I'd go back to my roots and make a 70mm Hammer film." Hooper came up with the idea of using Halley's Comet in the screenplay, rather than the asteroid belt as originally used in the novel, as the comet was going to pass by Earth one year following the film's release. Colin Wilson, the author of the source material, was unhappy with the way the film turned out. He wrote of it, "John Fowles had once told me that the film of The Magus was the worst movie ever made. After seeing Lifeforce I sent him a postcard telling him that I had got one better." According to interviews with Bill Malin, who plays one of the male vampires, the film went over schedule during production. Because of this, some important scenes were never shot, and the film was shut down at one time because the studio had simply run out of money. The film marked the fourth project to feature special effects produced by Academy Award winner John Dykstra. Dykstra who has worked on 38 films including: Star Wars, Star Trek the Motion Picture, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, Spider-Man 1 and 2, and the last three Tarantino films. His last IMDB credit is a fan man Spiderman film that is getting some heat because of racist slurs used by some of the cast whilst promoting the film. The umbrella-like alien spaceship was modelled after an artichoke, while the miniature London destroyed in the film was actually the remains of Tucktonia, a model village near Christchurch, United Kingdom, that had closed not long before the shooting of the film. The initial Director's cut was 128 minutes long. This is 12 minutes longer than the final version, which had several scenes cut, most of them taking place on the Space Shuttle Churchill. According to an interview he gave on the UK talk show Wogan in 1985, most of Nicholas Ball's performance ended up on the cutting room floor Mathilda May had to learn her lines phonetically, for her audition as Space Girl, because she didn't know any English at the time. She then went on to learn the language during the six months she spent in England on this movie. Patrick Stewart has said several times that Tobe Hooper was his favourite director to work with (which is rather unkind to Jonathan Frakes I thought). 'Twas the night before Christmas and through MountPeg Towers, bottles of port, red wine and brown ale had been strategically placed into a series of time-lock-release safes to ensure an even spread of gradual inebriation throughout the twenty-fifth thereby ensuring it's not all gone after two hours. Yes, the day is almost upon us and The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour's festive celebrations peak once more with the god-tier array of light entertainment name-dropping that is ITV's 1972 showcase, All Star Comedy Carnival (that's right, the one from every fifth-or-so Steps Up The Mountain). With Blair, Grayson, Tarby, Wogan, Rod Hull, Moira Anderson AND PEGGY MOUNT, everything you have ever wanted waits in here... How slowly can time pass while you're waiting for a four-minute On The Buses Christmas Sketch to end? How quickly does a programme have to oscillate between low-brow autopilot sitcom and high-precision performance art to give viewers the televisual bends? And how on earth is your favourite* vintage TV podcast going to top this? Unwrap. Press Play. Be as disappointed as every year. *go on, admit it. Al McKenna stars as iconic broadcaster Terry Wogan in Wogan's Sweet Sixteen by Kenneth Sweeney
One of Peter Sellers' favourite episodes of The Goon Show, the inspiration for The Jet-Propelled Guided NAAFI was torn from the pages of the news as Spike Milligan picked up on a story in the Telegraph about abuses of taxpayer money overseas. James Page joins Tyler to discuss the show and they talk about how a neat happenstance in the previously referred to newspaper article provided the perfect hook for Milligan and a gag which over time has lost its original relevance; the many memorable lines and sequences which still get quoted today (and who knew g-strings were around in 1956?); a new theme tune; plus negotiations at the time for a new series with the BBC. There's also time for some Ratties praise and that time an audience member walked onto the set of Wogan during a Harry & Spike interview.

Neil has a most enlightening chat with Kevin Geddes about the fabulous television cook Fanny Cradock (1909-1994). Fanny has a reputation for being difficult to work with, cruel and monstrous, and that she was a fake. In this chat Kevin upturns SOME of those preconceptions. We talk about her way into radio and television, her manner and presenting style, the fantastic Christmas special, as well as her decline and fall from television cookery. Much of her life is fabricated and it is difficult to see where the real Fanny stops, and the celebrity Fanny begins. It's a hot mess of info this week on Eavesdroppin' as Geordie & Michelle go rogue with two different themes: Eavesdroppin' updates and the Illuminati! Remember a few episodes back when neither Geordie or Michelle could remember the big daddy of all secret societies? Well this week Geordie puts it to rights by focusing on… the Illuminati! And how it's the biggest secret society of all time, even bigger than the Freemasons… or is it? But first Michelle kicks off with some updates on missing Australian fraudster and conwoman Melissa Caddick… Why does her husband have a restraining order against him? What's this new Sex and the City looking TV show about her? How many cars are being sold off? Why did Michelle say ‘technalogy'? Listen to find out! Geordie then uncovers the ins and the outs of the Illuminati! What is the Bavarian Illuminati and how is that different to today's Illuminati? And how are the Illuminati different to the Freemasons? What is Operation Mindfuck? And is it all just made up?? And how are the Justified Ancients of MuMu all wrapped up in it? And if the Illuminti is such a secret society then why is there a website? And are all conspiracy theories anti-semitic? All this and more… so get Eavesdroppin'! Matt Lucas calls him "the Godfather of TV comedy" and he's certainly got one of the most impressive CV's in the industry. Since joining the BBC in 1980, he's been instrumental in producing the very best of British sketch comedy including A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Smith and Jones, French and Saunders, This Morning with Richard Not Judy, Little Britain and The League of Gentlemen. As a head honcho at the Beeb, he brought The Vicar of Dibley, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Goodness Gracious Me, Absolutely Fabulous, The Thick of It and The Office to our screens. He also produced (and had a small role in) series 3 of Bottom. It's Jon Plowman! Over Plowman's lunch, Jon tells us about how he started in the industry, his time winging it as a reporter, having his arm broken by Rik Mayall in Texas, accidentally destroying pianos live on Wogan, warming up audiences, working with French and Saunders, being directed by Mel Smith, taking over producing duties on Bottom series 3, working with Rik and Ade, clowning and cartoon violence, building ferris wheels in studios, working with Jon Stewart in America, turning down Sacha Baron Cohen, commissioning The Office, comedy vs drama and bringing Ab Fab to TV. The conversation took place over Zoom so please forgive the occasional connection drop out. The book "Talking Bottom: A guide to the cult sitcom" can be found to order at: https://unbound.com/books/bottom/
