The exploration of the music of the Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896–1967) on Toccata Classics now turns to his chamber output, with this first recording of his String Quartets Nos. 1 and 4. Flury was himself a gifted violinist, and these works – written for personal pleasure and for musician friends – were composed with an intimate familiarity with the medium. In the fourteen years between these two quartets, Flury's musical language consolidated, from the early foray into mild modernism heard in No. 1 into the rich, late-Romantic aesthetic of No. 4.TracklistString Quartet No. 1 in D Minor (1926) (21:40) I. Known in his lifetime as ‘the north German Schubert', Carl Loewe (1796–1869) is remembered today chiefly as a composer of songs and ballads. Yet there is a considerable body of piano music that is strikingly innovative in content, expression and harmony, containing the germs of ideas later taken up by composers such as Wagner and Liszt. Loewe was unquestionably a brilliantly original talent, a major figure in ushering in the Romantic era – with the remarkable Four Fantasies of 1854 heard here ‘documenting' in music the contemporary emigration of German families to the United States. This third volume of Linda Nicholson's survey of his piano music on historical instruments concludes its first-ever complete recording on any kind of piano.TracksVier Phantasien, Op. 137 (1854) (36:55) I. Leo Ornstein is as well known for his extraordinary longevity as for his music: he was born in Ukraine in 1893 and died in Wisconsin in 2002, aged at least 108. His generous output of music, much of it for the piano, his own instrument, remains poorly known, although it can stand shoulder to shoulder with that of many better-known names. Some of the pieces here – which cover a span of over 60 years – have their roots in Debussy, Skryabin, and Szymanowski, but Ornstein welds those influences into an edgy, energetic language very much his own. The Three Moods of c. 1914 are anger, grief, and joy, but there is strength of feeling in all the music to be heard here. Indeed, the Nine Vignettes bear a misleading title: they are substantial and powerful virtuoso essays that can flare up into moments of startling power and violence; hitherto unknown, they constitute a major contribution to the piano literature.TracksNine Vignettes, s380 (1977) (34:39) No. 1 Moderato (4:49) No. 2 Con Moto (3:08) No. 3 Moderato (3:21) No. 4 Animato (4:26) No. 5 Moderato (2:09) No. 6 Allegro (3:30) No. 7 Animato (4:15) No. 8 Moderato (3:15) No. 9 Moderato con moto (5:46) Bagatelle, s100 (1952) (1:30) A Moment of Retrospect, s156 (?1950s) (4:45) The Cathedral, s73 (1916) (2:50) Nocturne, No. 1, s153 (c. 1922) (8:47) Three Moods, s5 (c. 1914)* (11:13) No. 1 Anger: Agitato (2:38) No. 2 Grief (5:32) No. 3 Joy: Presto (3:03) All Except * First Recordings*First Digital RecordingHelp support our show by purchasing this album at:Downloads (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.comThis album is broadcast with the permission of Sean Dacy from Rosebrook Media.
Tomorrow, October 27th 2023, marks a momentous occasion in pop music history. Sort of. 25 years ago on that date, the initial American compilation record of Now! That's What I Call Music made its way onto retail shelves. Some 87 volumes later (and with a 25th anniversary tracklist reveal tomorrow to boot)… Now! That's What I Call Country, Christmas, Motown, Dance, fill-in-the-blank Genre releases as well…it's snapshot of modern American music history. Sherman and Ski simply cannot, nay, WILL NOT, let this phenomenon go unnoticed. Ergo, this episode is dedicated to a track by track review of the original compact disc, the one that started it all. It peaked at #10 on the album Billboard charts, and went platinum (as did the 28 volumes that came afterwards). But to paraphrase Stefan from SNL, this collection really DID have everything…Janet Jackson, Marcy Playground, Fastball, Aqua, Lenny Kravitz, Tonic, Backstreet Boys, Radiohead, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Hanson, All Saints…it was so NOW, then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_That%27s_What_I_Call_Music!_(original_U.S._album) As regular listeners know, a chatfest about this type of sonic overload could stretch on for hours and hours. Therefore - Sherman and Ski have timed each other's commentary on this episode, limiting ourselves to a 90 second review of each track, and then pick our two tracks that we felt represented this unique moment in time (and our favorites). We hope you enjoy this trip down 90's Nostalgia Lane as much as we did recording it – take a listen to see our hot takes, and who we both picked as our essential tracks from this seminal compilation that has changed music distribution for the last 25 years!
There MAY be new music this week on Radio Active Kids (yes I know I've made that pun before but I only get to do it once a year haha)! New songs by the likes of Imagination Movers & Mustard Plug, Itty Bitty Beats & Claudia Robin Gunn, Josh & The Jamtones, Dub Town Rockers, Keith Munslow, Little Miss Ann (ft. Kymberly Stewart!), BENNY TIME & BVT, fleaBITE & Levity Beet, Rolie Polie Guacamole & Katie Ha Ha Ha, Marla Lewis, Charity and the JAMband, Marsha and the Positrons, Angie Who, My Friend Christopher, The Bongo Brothers, Blue Tac, Mama Birds, and a compilation by DARIA featuring Joanie Calem & more! Here's the playlist!
In this episode, Alex takes us on another journey into songs that sound the same. Borrowed Music, Volume 2 showcases tracks that possess similar musical qualities from artists like Nirvana and Yes, Leonard Cohen and Pink Floyd, Metallica and King Crimson, Phish and Pantera, and other combinations that will surprise you. As in Borrowed Music Volume 1 (Episode 20), Alex compares and contrasts the tracks throughout the episode and provides analysis on what makes the elements of the songs similar. He also discusses a legal battle that's currently being fought over one of the featured songs and shares some thoughts on the ethics of “borrowing” music.Listen to music from the episode on SpotifyFollow Alex on IG and TwitterMoods & Modes is presented by Osiris Media. It's been a long time coming... After a couple of years since the original request, the music of the podcast is finally here! Set your ears to the smooth sounds of The Pod Charles Cinecast from 2019-2022. We're talking all the theme songs, dumb snack time jingles, silly covers, weird season intros, dumb segment sound bites, and weird background music.Sit back and let the music from our very dumb podcast wash over you.
Private Ryan VS The Music series returns. Usually out in September for the birthday celebrations but definitely not forgotten. As usual this mix takes you on a journey seamlessly through genres using wordplay and unique transitions. Enjoy!

Hey horror fans! They know you were expecting the rest of Hellraiser: Deader this week, but while the guys try to wrap their brains around the rest of that movie while simultaneously preparing for an on-location movie marathon that will keep you entertained for weeks to come, they are slightly delayed. You will get the rest of Deader this weekend, with more episodes next week. Oh hi, didn't hear you come in. Welcome, have a seat won't you? We've gathered all your friends here today because we love and care about you. And one of those friends is Rick, and another one of them is Nick, and another one is our guest this week, Ron Swallow. Host of The Greatest Pod, Ron wants to give you a gift to show you how important and special you are. And that gift is White Zombie's La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One. This album is a groovy horror metal fueled carnival ride and it is so much fun. We also debate which superheroes the cast of Tiger King would be, everyone acknowledges that Rick is the Main Character, and we delve into the wild wild world of professional rollerblading. Thinking Music. I've always been frustrated with the 'study music' out there. It's either too busy/distracting or it's very obviously cheesy 'spa' or 'meditation' music. So in 2015 I created my own. There are 4 tracks: Volume 1: 18min of Piano - delicate movements and warm, satisfying chord progressions with repeating motifs that hold the brain's attention, with only gentle dynamic builds and a minimum of rhythm or overwhelming fortes. Volume 2: 7min of Soft Pad - gooey and warm structures that rely on chord inversions to convey a liquified sense of movement. Volume 3: 8min of Piano - rhythmic broken chords and colourful upper intervals to stimulate creativity in the brain through harmonic blends. Volume 4: 9min of Soft Pad with smatterings of Piano, - descending regal voicings and glassy pads that emanate rest and a sense of hope. --------------------------------------------------------- Listen to these tracks on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-wpAYBCPhA55hunofhxIEHzK6xVTZEhY Rip an MP3 of these tracks by using a site like https://ytmp3.cc/youtube-to-mp3/ Connect with Discernable - our mailing list gets exclusive and unreleased content: https://www.discernable.io/crew

In the token 'musical episode' of every series, Mon reveals what went down backstage with a rock band when she was a teen, and Sez recounts the least sexy striptease of all time. Headphone users beware - there's a reason Mon almost ruined her high school musical.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
