Elizabeth II: o adeus à rainha mais longeva do mundo

O Mundo Agora

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 19, 2022 4:48

In an unexpected coincidence, we recorded this episode only days before Queen Elizabeth II's passing and Charles becoming the new King of England. But long before Charles became king, and before he met Princess Diana, Charles met Camilla Rosemary Shand. And she captured his heart for the rest of his life. Why didn't Charles marry Camilla in the first place? Why didn't he feel for his wife Diana—beautiful and adored by all—as he did for Camilla? In trying to answer those questions, Kel became completely obsessed with these controversial royals. We hope you enjoy. ♡ Significant Lovers is podcast about historic and famous love stories. In this episode of A Special Place In Hell, the girls/women make some perfunctory remarks about the death of Queen Elizabeth, with Sarah praising the television series The Crown and Meghan explaining why her favorite royal is Camilla Parker Bowles. They then reflect on last week's conversation with their first ever guest, Kmele Foster of The Fifth Column podcast. Kmele, who met his wife when they were teenagers, had some fascinating things to say about the benefits of finding your mate early in life. Is he onto something? It is better to pair up with someone you meet when you're very young, like Sarah did? Or are you better waiting until you're older and have mastered the art of eating over the sink, like Meghan did? Sarah also wonders why so few famous second wave feminists were mothers and the girls/women discuss Selfish, Shallow & Self-Absorbed, the 2015 anthology that Meghan edited about choosing not to have children — and also why Meghan hates the term “childfree.” Finally, they wonder whether Sheryl Sandberg's book Lean In had any basis in reality whatever and whether Elon Musk's apparent quest to populate the world with his seed presents a good opportunity for single women wishing to have children. Bonus Content for paid subscribers includes responses to reader comments, a brief discussion of the contradictions of atheist communities, and Meghan's challenges with creating her new community, The Unspeakeasy. There was absolutely no one else on Earth with the stature, respect, influence, and as beloved as Queen Elizabeth 2nd.  She was the last major figure left who had served in some capacity during World War 2. She had been on the thrown of Great Britain for  70 years. To put that into some perspective when she became the Monarch of England and the Commonwealth of nations, Harry Truman was President of the United States, Winston Churchill was residing at 10 Downing Street, and Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union. In most of the World, only one in ten women worked outside the home, America had 48 States, Cary Grant was one of Hollywood's biggest stars,   Richard Nixon was not yet Vice President, and Strom Thurmond had not yet been elected to the United States Senate. Through all the years, all the advances in technology, all the changes on the political map around the world,  an almost entirely different world had emerged, but  she had never gone away.  Queen Elizabeth 2nd  was the one constant through it all. The very foundation of her nation and the steadfast symbol of stability in an ever changing World. She was to so many of us what appeared to be the last adult on the world stage. In this special episode, we look back over the life of the only Monarch of Great Britain 80% of her  countrymen  has ever known. 14 United States Presidents,  15 British Prime Ministers, the age of radio, television, the internet, and social media have all come, and in some cases gone, under her reign. She has somehow  figured out a way to steer her nation and commonwealth of nations through all of that dynamic, cultural, and ethnic change, and she has done it all while becoming the World's most beloved public figure. No easy feet for any one, in any office, to have achieved. Here you will hear her speech as a 14 year old child, requested by Winston Churchill, with the hope of swaying public sentiment in the United States during the early days of World War 2, her speech at age 21 pledging to serve her country with dedication and loyalty for the rest of her life, her Speech after the horrific death of Princess Diana, her inspirational  Christmas messages in 2016 and 2021, and, finally, her message of instruction to Parliament on its opening day of 2021. We will also hear the first words from King Charles 3rd as he becomes the new Monarch of the nation of Great Britain. It is a thank you to  a Queen who gave all for 70 years, as the great children's character Paddington said,  "thank you for everything" God Save the King!! The Lowcountry Gullah PodcastTheculture, history and traditions podcast where Gullah Geechee culture lives!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

The last years of the Queen's life underlined her place at the heart of national life. From a unique state visit to the Republic of Ireland to the Diamond Jubilee, from the marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles to London 2012, she remained a potent symbol. During the Covid-19 pandemic her effectiveness at capturing the public mood was re-affirmed in a series of powerful broadcasts. But, as James Naughtie explains in the last episode of Radio 4's new podcast on the reign of Elizabeth II, the concluding years of the Queen's reign were also coloured by personal heartache. Prince Philip, who had been such a stalwart support to her throughout their marriage, died in 2021 and relations with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who chose to step back from public duties and live abroad, were sometimes strained. Yet the transition to a new era was also carefully and discreetly carried on as an extraordinary reign drew to a close. Buzzn The Tower

What do Lindon B. Johnson, Camilla Parker Bowles, and George Lazenby have in common? They had the distinct honor of filling John F. Kennedy, Princess Diana, and Sean Connery's James bond shoes. Greatness is rare. The replacement of greatness being great is even more rare. Scholars agree that the 1987 John McTiernan film Predator, is the greatest film ever made. And while Predator 2 was a valiant effort to recapture lightening in a bottle, for the most part all those who have followed have been a far cry from the original. So it should come as no shock to any of you that the news of a Predator prequal taking place in the 1700s, with a female lead, had a lukewarm reception from Buzzn The Tower. However as 80s film historians we must review this potential dumpster fire and give our two cents. And that's exactly what we're going to do. Today on Buzzn The Tower we'll take a look at the latest attempt at a Predator movie as we talk all things Prey. I'm Mo Shapiro, and joining me as always the Mac to my Blain, Max Sanders. In 1981, the world watched as Prince Charles married the perfect royal bride: Lady Diana Spencer. Young, beautiful, and stylish, Diana breathed new life into the monarchy. But the fairytale didn't last long. In the years that followed, Diana and Charles's troubled marriage and bitter divorce was a constant in the tabloids, and Diana's death in a car accident in 1997 shook the world. And through it all, Charles gained a reputation as an unfaithful husband to the “people's princess” as he carried on an affair with friend Camilla Parker Bowles. But today, Camilla — once known as the notorious “other woman” — is poised to become Queen Consort when Charles takes the throne. It's a reflection of the changes the monarchy has undergone in the aftermath of the Charles and Diana saga… and the fulfillment of Prince Charles's decades-long quest to have the love of his life accepted by the royal establishment and the British public.

His portraits of filmmaker Louis Malle and of Becker's mentor and friend Brassaï featured largely in the pages of the prototype for the magazine's relaunch, in 1983. Becker's specialty in portraits, photographed by and large on location, soon became a Vanity Fair staple: Robert Mapplethorpe, Jack Kevorkian, Jocelyn Wildenstein, and Martha Graham, as well as countless socialites, artists, and heads of state. Assignments for the magazine have dispatched Becker far and wide—from the Amazonian jungle, for first-encounter photographs of members of the Yanomami tribe, to Buckingham Palace, for the first photographs showing the Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles together.Becker is known for his close collaboration with Bob Colacello, Alex Shoumatoff, and other Vanity Fair writers on stories about the denizens of worldly watering holes: the Adirondacks and Aspen, Palm Beach and Palm Springs, Capri and so forth. Over the course of three years' work for the Rockefeller Foundation, Becker documented its funded projects on five continents. Four books of his work have been published: Bright Young Things; Studios by the Sea, Artists of Long Island's East End (derived from a Vanity Fair assignment with Bob Colacello); Bright Young Things: London; and, recently, Jonathan Becker: 30 Years at Vanity Fair. Visit him online at JonathanBecker.com.______Andrew Loog Oldham's Sounds and Vision is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network.  For more of the best music storytelling follow @DoubleElvis on Instagram or search Double Elvis in your podcast app.
