Film critic and screenwriter Lucas Hardwick returns to the show for an extended MEGASODE with Alex chatting about film criticism, horror, Joe Bob Briggs, collectibles, comics, ANDOR and STAR WARS fan exhaustion, the obsession with backstory in the sci-fi genre these days, STAR TREK PICARD, the Inglorious Treksperts podcast, and so much more. Find out why Lucas hates the "so bad its good" moniker and the charm and heart of gold he seeks (and usually finds) in every creative project. This is a long conversation with occasional raucous bits (mostly from Alex after two glasses of wine!), but we hope you genre fans will be here for it! Don't miss this gripping conversation where we learn about life with the man the Mexican Narcos called "the most honorable criminal we ever worked with” as well as run-ins with a future king, tales of paternal cruelty, and even a bit of “Better Call Saul.” Dubbed “Mexico's real-life Don Corleone,” Pietro La Greca Sr. ran the biggest money laundering scheme in Mexican history. But his crimes soon caught up with him—and made an enemy of his son, Pietro La Greca Jr. Set in a world of fast cars, sprawling mansions, and VIP treatment, PESOS: The Rise and Fall of a Border Family is a tale of greed, ambition, and family betrayal. La Greca Jr. tells the story of how his father built himself from the ground up through lies, scams, and sheer belligerence. After sweet-talking his way from Napoli to Tijuana, La Greca Sr. married into one of Mexico's most powerful families. During the worst period in Mexico's economic history, he made millions laundering money on behalf of some of the country's most powerful politicians, businessmen, and celebrities. But his greed soon led to his downfall, earning him the enmity of presidents and drug cartels alike and twice forcing his entire family—including the young La Greca Jr.—to go on the run. Alex is joined by novelist Jeff Berney, who released his second novel in October 2022, The Fall of Faith. It's a gritty domestic thriller about love, faith, and the consequences of doing whatever it takes to survive in the small forgotten town of Eden, Missouri, somewhere between Bentonville and Kansas City. “Faith comes in many forms. It can take years to find and seconds to lose. And nothing, not money nor even morality, can help you hold onto it once it begins to slip away,” Berney says. “That's the situation a group of characters confronts as a lost trucker seeks redemption after a chance encounter with a stripper whose seductive secret threatens to unravel a town full of sin and deeply buried lies." In this wide-ranging discussion, Jeff and Alex also talk about his chilling first book, A Killer Secret, frustration and fun in writing, his journey from pre-med to advertising, all things self-publishing, and their mutual great taste in bookshelves. Ellen Butler is the internationally bestselling author of the Karina Cardinal mystery series. Her experiences working on Capitol Hill and at a medical association in Washington, D.C., inspired the mystery-action series. Book critics call the Karina Cardinal mysteries “intelligent escapism.” Butler also writes historical fiction. Her WWII spy novel, The Brass Compass, recently won a 2022 Speak Up Talk Radio Firebird Book Award for historical fiction. The second book in the duology, Operation Blackbird: A Cold War Spy Novel, is Butler's latest release. The novel is inspired by true events. Reviewers are calling it “riveting” and “a thrilling adventure.” In today's discussion, we learn how Operation Blackbird was inspired by true events and how the tensions surrounding the Cold War when the book takes place invites comparison to today's ongoing concerns in Ukraine--and the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons. In this episode, we explore the value of mindful representation of mental illness in books, TV, film. Part of the cultural struggle with mental health stigma has to do with the media representations of OCD, PTSD, Paranoia. Alex explains why there's a brand-new cover for the acclaimed John Pilate Mystery book, Pilate's Key. Check it out (and buy it!) here. Learn about the cover artist, Jason McIntyre, here. About Pilate's Key: Umbrella drink in hand, nursing gunshot wounds and a fragile psyche, John Pilate relaxes on the sun-soaked beaches of Key West. His peaceful recuperation shatters in an instant when he stumbles upon a dead body. Soon, Pilate finds himself part of a deadly mystery of the high seas. He has blood on his hands, a mysterious poker chip in his pocket, shadows over his shoulder, and a sexy cop in his bed. John Pilate is in trouble again. The only way out is to find the key…Pilate's Key. A 2012 Kindle Book Review Awards semifinalist for Best Mystery/Thriller. Named a "Page Turner" by Shelf Unbound Literary Magazine. Praise for Pilate's Key: Mmmmm....Pilate's Key is that kind of suspenseful tongue-in-cheek book that you relish when lying on a beach somewhere, and yet this is far more than easily disposable travel fiction. It is the sort of action-packed and twisted tale that will reel you in and before you know it, you'll be sunburned and your day on the beach will be over. -- John J. Staughton "It's a fun ride sorting through Pilate's inner demons and those threatening his life for his butting into business that may or may not be his. Greenwood pulls together a collection of characters that form an intricate plot with lots of moving parts. Watching it all come together makes for an entertaining and satisfying read." -BookTrib Reviews --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/j-alexander-greenwood/message

We wrap-up our interview with Alex Greenwood about the origins of the John Pilate Mysteries. Today, guest interviewer Brian Hutton probes about Greenwood's actual involvement and brushes with a modern-day tragedy at the small college that eerily parallels the events that inspired the John Pilate Mysteries. Greenwood recounts how his relationship with a former Peru State College president seemingly went from perfect to poisonous in a matter of moments, with little-known details of the man who achieved tremendous success yet was undone by a secret past, unethical behavior, and a final, desperate act. Greenwood also discusses his creative process, how he chooses locales for stories, what he regrets about John Pilate's name, and shares hints of what's next in the series. Some source material for this discussion derived from "Tragedy at Peru State College: The Murders of William Nicholas and Paul Maxwell" by Nancy Handy Moran in Nebraska History -- Fall 1988. Other materials gleaned from online reports in the Lincoln Journal Star, Omaha World-Herald and assorted websites. For a complete list of links, contact the podcast at MGOPod.com. Have time for a short story? If so... A fan favorite character in the John Pilate Mysteries is Sheriff Morgan Scovill, and in Pilate's 7 it was a joy to bring him back in a sort of prequel to the first book in the series, Pilate's Cross. In the short story Badge, we get a look at the swirling elements surrounding Scovill before John Pilate steps foot into Cross Township. I hope my reading does the story--and Morgan Scovill--justice. Because he is all about justice...the Cross kind. If you enjoy this reading, you can pick up the ebook from all the usual suspects, including Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iBooks, and Smashwords.
