You the listeners send in questions to talk about. Your co-hosts Stuart and William, try and spin it round to the environment in some way. Neither see the questions before they press record. No preparation, they try and hopefully, a little bit like you, approach this stuff cold.Scott, Arisaig, Scotland - “Rewilding, a significant contemporary movement, entails the restoration and enhancement of local, regional, and international food chains and biodiversity. However, there is no singularly correct method for ecosystem management and conservation. Should we not, therefore, prioritize the rewilding of our own lives, thoughts, and perspectives first, before starting this journey? Alternatively, should we at the very least consider rewilding ourselves concurrently with wider ecological initiatives? Presently, this personal aspect of rewilding is often deferred until substantial progress has been made in ecological rewilding elsewhere, which creates separation between humankind and the wider natural world”.William affirms that humans are part of nature—we're animals, not separate. Stuart shares a curiosity about rewilding, which he sees as enriching biodiversity, not just letting things grow unchecked. William outlines three approaches: maintaining the present, restoring the past, or imagining something new. Stuart argues there's no single right way, stressing that nature is diverse and complex. Stuart feels somewhat “wild” already and values continually challenging his perspective. Insight, he believes, is fluid—something earned over and over. William echoes this, asking how disconnected we've become from nature and whether we're aligning with broader ecological efforts or staying isolated. In terms of action, Stuart calls for personal reflection: what does rewilding mean to you? William challenges rewilding's stereotypes, arguing it's not just for the whimsical—it's a conscious break from consumerism and disconnection. Floss, Gimli, Manitoba, Canada - “We too readily judge a book by its cover, and we know that, but readily overlook, that to just see the outside is limiting, as most things of substance happen on the inside. One of the greatest freedoms we can experience ourselves, and can offer others, is how we react to things, situations and people. Really, the only things worth doing, of true value, is that which we do for others. So we need to remember to avoid making quick assumptions about people and whether they're decent types, until we have the facts”.William agrees with Floss's point that we instinctively judge by appearances—it's how we try to make sense of things. His call to action is to view those around us as potential allies, friends, or simply connections—there's always potential. Stuart notes we often forget we judge by appearances and reminds us that whether it's a person, animal, or ecosystem, the truly important things happen beneath the surface. William tries to see beyond the exterior. Stuart questions if we're honest about the image we present and sees widespread inauthenticity.William reframes the idea: to help others, we must work on knowing ourselves. There's nothing wrong with also gaining from giving. Stuart advises withholding judgment until we know the facts. What do you make of this discussion? Mastering Book Cover Design for Amazon & Kindle: A Practical Guide. In the crowded world of self-publishing, your book cover is more than just a pretty picture—it's your first impression, your marketing powerhouse, and the visual hook that can make or break a sale. Whether you're publishing a paperback on Amazon or a Kindle eBook, designing an effective cover is essential. Here's how to make sure yours stands out in the crowded Amazon marketplace. Why Your Book Cover Matters You've heard the saying, “Don't judge a book by its cover,” but let's be honest: readers absolutely do. On Amazon and Kindle, your cover shows up as a thumbnail alongside hundreds of others. A compelling design can make readers stop scrolling and click—while a dull or unprofessional one may get overlooked entirely. Key Differences: Kindle eBook vs. Paperback Cover Before you begin designing, understand the format you're creating for:Kindle eBooks: Require only a front cover. It should be optimized for digital screens and look good at small sizes (thumbnail view).Paperback Books (KDP Print): Require a full cover including front, back, and spine. You'll need to factor in the trim size, page count, and bleed areas.Amazon provides a Cover Calculator & Template Generator for paperbacks:https://kdp.amazon.com/cover-calculator Design Specs for Amazon & Kindle Covers Kindle eBook Cover Requirements:Dimensions: Ideal ratio is 1.6:1 (e.g., 1600 x 2560 pixels).Minimum size: 1000 pixels on the shortest side.Maximum file size: 50MB.File type: JPEG or TIFF.Color: RGB only.Paperback Cover Requirements (KDP Print):File type: PDF for print.Resolution: 300 DPI.Color: CMYK.Bleed: Typically 0.125" on all sides.Spine width: Depends on page count and paper type.Design Principles That Sell 1. Know Your Genre Each genre has visual cues. Romance uses soft, emotional imagery. Thrillers often use dark tones and bold fonts. Non-fiction covers tend to be cleaner and typography-driven. Look at the top 10 books in your category for inspiration. 2. Typography is CrucialUse no more than two fonts.Title should be readable at thumbnail size.Avoid script or decorative fonts unless genre-appropriate.Author name can be smaller but still legible.3. High-Quality Images Avoid using pixelated or stocky-looking images. Invest in high-resolution assets or create custom illustrations/photos. Sites like Unsplash (free) or Shutterstock (premium) are great sources. 4. Balance and Hierarchy Design with clear visual hierarchy:Title firstSubtitle second (if applicable)Author name thirdLeave breathing space. Don't overcrowd. 5. Thumbnail Test Shrink your design to 100 x 160 px. Can you still read the title? Is it still eye-catching? This is how it will appear in Amazon search results. Tools for Designing Book Covers For DIY Authors:Canva (Free & Pro): User-friendly with KDP templates.BookBrush: Designed for authors, with genre templates.Adobe Express: Quick designs with good typography options. For Professional Designers:Adobe Photoshop or InDesign: Full control for advanced design and print-ready files.Affinity Publisher: A powerful InDesign alternative.Using Amazon KDP Cover Creator (Optional) If you're not comfortable with design tools, Amazon's built-in Cover Creator is simple and free. It has templates, font controls, and lets you preview in 3D. However, it's limited in customization, so it's best for basic layouts. Avoid These Common MistakesUsing low-res images or blurry graphicsCentering everything by defaultOveruse of effects like drop shadows or bevelsInconsistent visual tone with the genreMisaligned spine elements on paperbacksIgnoring bleed and trim linesPro Tip: Hire a Designer If You Can A professionally designed cover can significantly boost your credibility and sales. If you're serious about publishing, consider hiring a freelance designer from platforms like Reedsy, 99designs, or Upwork. Always provide your book's genre, blurb, tone, and any visual references you like. Final Thoughts Your book cover is a visual handshake with your reader. On Amazon and Kindle, it's your billboard, brand, and storefront rolled into one. Invest time and care into it. With the right tools, creative direction, and an understanding of what sells, you can design a cover that attracts, engages, and converts browsers into buyers.

Book covers are powerful, but when they don't match the story inside, they can lead to confusion, frustration, and even a book being unfairly judged. While covers are meant to sell books, they should also be honest about what readers can expect.

From Amy:We were originally hoping for a November 22 release of my Tiny Altars audiobook on Audible, but that date came and went while it awaited its turn in Quality Assurance for over two weeks. Now it's December 3, and the audiobook has arrived, which reminds me that books, like children, arrive in their own time and way, no matter how we try to control it.Fun fact: From my first callings to write my personal narrative, I kept seeing the number 123 in association with my writing. This book always knew and was telling me what it wanted to be, even if I didn't see it.The part of me that likes to watch such things notes that it's arriving nearly one year to the day that I first met K.O. Myers at Particulate Media, who created this audiobook with me. The meeting was an unexpected development, but a fortuitous one. There's what we think we're doing, and there's what wants to happen. Then we start wrap our head around what's really there. Especially in narrative craft. In this episode, I talk about the surprise of mothering twins. This book, Tiny Altars, was like that. Unexpected. I didn't want to write about the dollhouse on the cover that represents something much bigger than me. I thought I was writing a different book when this dollhouse origin story snuck into my manuscript. I tried to fit it into my German-themed book. The dollhouse image took over. It had its own story it wanted to tell. Not about Germany, but a story much closer to home. I'm so glad I let it.Which is how it ended up on the cover. The origin story of the dollhouse wraps up this episode. I hope you enjoy.Let me also introduce you to K.O. Myers, the producer of this episode and my Tiny Altars audiobook.K.O. Myers is the founder an lead editor of Particulate Media, a full-service audio production company that helps podcasters and audiobook presenters sound more professional without sacrificing their authenticity.https://particulatemedia.comhttps://www.facebook.com/particulatemediahttps://genvexed.bsky.social Amy Hallberg is the author of Tiny Altars: A Midlife Revival and German Awakening: Tales from an American Life. Siegfried Lokatis is a retired professor of book history, and former head of the University of Leipzig's Institute for Communication and Media Studies. He is the author of Book Covers of the GDR and is currently working on a history of the S. Fischer publishing house, due out in 2026. We met in Leipzig recently where Siegfried treated me to a tour of the Bibliotop's splendid Insel Bucherei book collection. Founded in 1912, the series now contains some 2,000 titles (and still counting according to Jonathan Landgrebe, head of Suhrkamp Verlag, the company that today produces the books). The series is iconic in Germany and in many ways its publishing history reflects the history of the country. The books are known for their beauty and the care with which they're produced. Qualities include: individual typographical design, exquisite illustration (notably from the thirties - stay tuned) and photography, and printing on wood-free, age-resistant paper, plus they're thread-stitched and bound in decorative cover paper. They served as the model for Allen Lane's King Penguin series. The Insel Bucherie series includes both well-known and little known texts from world literature as well as art history, non-fiction, poetry, and fairy tales, plus gift anthologies from Germany and around the globe. Subjects covered in my conversation with Siegfried include Rilke and copyright, the decision to publish established, versus contemporary works; Stephan Zweig and the Nazis, poisonous mushrooms, the rarest volume, the Allied bombing of Leipzig, censorship, the separation of East and West Germany, wartime profits, collecting, pornography and more.

She brought typography to the forefront, often treating it as a visual and emotional narrative element, while incorporating geometric abstraction to create a sense of movement and rhythm. Her work is now part of the permanent collections at MoMA, LACMA, and Cooper Hewitt. About StevenSteven Heller is one of the most prolific design historians and writers in the field, having authored, co-authored, or edited over 200 books on design, illustration, and popular culture. He is best known for his long-running column, The Daily Heller, published by Print magazine, which offers daily insights on visual culture, design history, and current events. In addition to his writing, Heller is the co-chair of the School of Visual Arts MFA Design/Designer as Author + Entrepreneur program, where he continues to shape future generations of designers.Throughout his career, Heller has been a steadfast advocate for women in design. His work has consistently featured and celebrated the contributions of women who have been overlooked in design history. He has worked to bring attention to underrepresented figures in the industry, often calling for a rewriting of design history to include more women. As early as the 1990s, Heller began amplifying the work of female designers, championing their influence on design movements across modernism, typography, and visual communication. He has been vocal about the importance of gender equality in the design industry and has pushed for more inclusive recognition of the women whose innovations have shaped the field. In 2011, Heller was awarded the AIGA Medal for his outstanding contributions to design journalism, education, and history. His ongoing commitment to uncovering the stories of women in design has made him not only a key figure in documenting design history but also an advocate for equity in the industry. Through his work, he has inspired a more inclusive and accurate portrayal of the design world, one that reflects the achievements of all its contributors. ____View all the visually rich 1-min reels of each woman on IG below:Instagram: Amber AsayInstagram: Women Designers Pod
Introduction As per Wikipedia, the phrase “You can never tell a book by its cover” was popularized when it appeared in the 1946 murder mystery, Murder in the Glass Room, by Lester Fuller and Edwin Rolfe: So let's talk about books today from a designer's lens. For this episode, I have, Multiple award winning designer, Ahlawat Gunjan. He is Head of Design at Penguin Random House, India. Ahlawat has a master's degree in graphic design from The Glasgow School of Art, UK. Previous to that he spent a semester at Indiana-Purdue University, USA, focusing on design thinking, innovation, and leadership. At the core, he is from NID, Ahmedabad. What goes into making a book cover design? Secrets of Book Publishing, what goes into making a book, the future of physical books in the digital world, and a few tips if you wish to get into editorial design or publication. Questions They often say, “Don't judge a book by its cover” Although the metaphorical meaning is different, but how does that feel to you as a designer? How true it is in the world of Book Design? What are the fundamental principles of effective book cover design? How is the balance achieved between telling a story through the cover, aesthetics, and shelf presence to grab a potential reader's attention? How does cover design differ across genres? (literary fiction vs. Children's book vs. Biographies and oh… there are endless categories) What role does audience research play in cover design decisions? Beyond the cover, what design elements go into creating a cohesive and reader-friendly book experience (typography, layout, illustrations, etc.)? How does the design team collaborate with authors and editors throughout the publishing process? Can you walk us through the entire process from penning it down to finally in the reader's hand? What factors influence the size and dimensions of a book (content type, target audience, printing costs, etc.)? With the rise of digital reading, how is the role of design evolving in the publishing industry? I recently was in London and went to Waterstones. They have multiple stores. The one at Piccadilly Circus was 4 4-story huge building. The sections/categories they had were crazy. Each airport has a bookstore. What is the future of books in this digital age? What design trends do you see shaping the future of printed books? How can one be a book designer? What advice would you give to aspiring book designers? What are some of the most iconic book cover designs in history, and why are they effective? Any that you designed and felt nice about or had a good recall? On Friday, November 22, 1963, nineteen year old Buell Wesley Frazier drove to his job at the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas, Texas. Sitting next to him in his car that morning was his coworker and occasional passenger, Lee Harvey Oswald. Little did Buell know that later that day his life would be permanently impacted by one of the most tragic events in American history, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. In this episode of Your History Your Story, we have the privilege of speaking with Buell Wesley Frazier, author of the book, “Steering Truth: My eternal connection to JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald”. Buell will talk about what it was like to train and work alongside Lee Harvey Oswald at the Book Depository, and will recollect his experiences on that fateful day in Dallas more than 60 years ago.
