Humans love horses. We all know this. And just one expression of this passion is to breed horses for particular jobs — a skill that has historically been based upon horsemanship, knowledge of bloodlines, and a significant amount of instinct. We also know that each foal brings with it a genetic legacy with the potential for qualities that make for a talented jumper, or a superb cutting horse, or a blazing fast racehorse. In this week’s episode, Elise is joined by geneticist Dr. Emmeline Hill, all the way from Ireland, to discuss the genetics that can determine Thoroughbred racing potential. Dr. Emmeline Hill’s breakthrough discovery of the “speed gene” means that we can predict a horse’s optimal race distance by examining its DNA to determine whether it possesses genes that are more suited to sprints, to middle distance, or to longer races! This gene could also have the added benefit of helping racehorses who might otherwise get labeled “too slow” when, in fact, they may actually be fast enough if they are entered in the correct distance races. Join Elise and Dr. Emmeline Hill in this episode to hear all about her incredible findings, the studies that have been conducted around this research, and much, much more! Topics of Discussion: [:25] About today’s episode with Dr. Emmeline Hill! [1:30] What is the “speed gene” and how does it correlate to performance in racehorses? [3:06] How have Dr. Hill’s findings matched up with actual performance on the track? [7:35] Beyond racing: how genetic studies might someday maximize the potential of each individual horse, highlighting the discipline they are most suited for. [13:05] Have Dr. Hill’s studies extended through the generations of horses to determine the degree to which parents pass on this gene to their offspring? And what other factors play a role in determining a horse’s potential? [18:47] Is the gene only found in blood? Or is it possible to isolate it in tissue or hair -- even in ancient horses’ remains? [22:30] How fast can we expect Thoroughbreds to realistically run? Is there an evolutionary or anatomical speed ceiling? [29:10] How does Dr. Hill see breeders addressing negative components in a limited gene pool (whether it’s Thoroughbreds or any other breed with a closed stud book)? [32:12] The importance of genetic diversity. [33:35] How Dr. Hill’s findings can be applied to humans as well! [36:22] Could we identify the horse-loving gene in people someday? [36:52] About next week’s episode of the Because of Horses Podcast! [38:08] About Dr. Hill’s legendary equestrian roots and why she originally became so captivated by horse breeding. [40:05] How Dr. Hill applied her education in human genetics to horses and breeding. [44:00] Where to discover more of Dr. Hill’s work. Cari has provided horse talent and training for dozens of top films and television shows including Helen of Troy, Night of the Museum, Yellowstone, Taking Woodstock, and Arthur, as well as Orange Is the New Black, Person of Interest, The Knick, and Snowman. One of Elise’s personal favorites is Winter’s Tale, much of which was filmed on location in New York City and stars Russell Crowe, Will Smith, and Colin Farrell. Chances are, when you see horses in a movie, on TV, a music video, or in a fashion shoot… Cari is behind the scenes, training and working with them. From her base at Windrock Farm in Amenia, New York, Cari breeds, trains, and sells horses for dressage, jumping, eventing, and trail riding, and offers instruction to riders at all levels. Cari is known for her positive and creative teaching and training philosophies, the result of the study of multiple disciplines. She is a U.S. Dressage Federation silver medalist, an “L” program graduate, and eventing competitor through the preliminary level. Join Elise and Cari today for this amazing edition of Because of Horses! You will hear all about Cari’s experiences working on set with famous actors (and horses!), how she trains both the actors and the horses, the qualities that make a horse especially suitable for working in front of a camera, everything that she loves about her job, and some of the funny stories from behind-the-scenes! Elise’s guests this week are country performers and songwriters, husband and wife, Templeton Thompson and Sam Gay — who are currently on tour together, performing at venues all across the U.S.A. Sam is a longtime veteran of the music industry, starting out in Memphis, playing guitar and singing in local bands. After moving to Nashville, he signed on as a staff songwriter at the legendary Acuff-Rose Publishing Company, where a number of his songs had tremendous success. Templeton began writing music very early on, following an Arista Records internship, and Reba McEntire recorded one of her songs in which she also performed as a backup singer. Templeton and Sam have provided music for the award-winning film producer and director, Cindy Meehl — who is best known for her films Buck and Unbranded. And their music video for “When I Get That Pony Rode” was produced by Meehl and it reached number one on Country Music Television and on Great American Country’s Top 10 list for eight weeks. Join Elise this week on Because of Horses as Templeton and Sam talk about sharing their dreams, writing music and performing together, and the ups and downs of living in the spotlight. As even the most passionate horse-crazy kids grow up, life frequently takes them down career paths that don't include the animal that dominated so many of their childhood dreams. But Suzi Vlietstra's professional life couldn't have been crafted more meticulously if she'd created a blueprint in the very moment she laid eyes on her first pony, Brian -- a Christmas present from non-equestrian parents who recognized how deeply she connected with horses. That family love and involvement would go on to inspire the skills and creativity that led to Suzi's founding Hobby Horse Inc. -- the largest designer and manufacturer of western show attire in the world. While Hobby Horse Inc. opened over 30 years ago, its true origins began in Suzi's mother's attic sewing studio, with her mom teaching Suzi to sew a wild assortment of costumes and accessories for a variety of Shetlands, Paints, hunters, and trail horses. Join Elise and Suzi in this week’s episode to learn more about how Suzi took her business from concept to reality, her expert guidance on impressing judges in the show ring, and the role of horses in her life. Topic of Discussion: [2:24] What Hobby Horse Inc's growth has meant to Suzi Vlietstra. [2:50] Suzi was born with the horse-loving gene. [3:09] About Suzi’s first horse: Brian the pony. [5:18] Elise shares some stories of her first pony, Barney. [6:33] More about Brian, the neighborhood celebrity pony. [7:37] Dotty the Appaloosa filly: Suzi’s first training project. [8:15] Suzi’s early experiences and how they led to the genesis of Hobby Horse Inc. [12:45] The love of horse equipment: every piece of tack becomes a beloved memento. [15:15] Suzi’s talent for writing: Elise reads an excerpt from Suzi's blog. [18:35] The Kentucky Horse Park and the rich history of horses. [20:21] Suzi’s writings: from her informative "how to" posts, to what judges look for in the show ring, to her reminiscences about being a horse-crazy girl. [23:53] Selling Hobby Horse to a new owner and how the company has evolved. [27:37] The various points in time when Suzi recognized Hobby Horse's success. [30:00] How Hobby Horse has grown — from concept to thriving business, and handing it off to the next generation. [32:18] How Hobby Horse has married the strategic components of competition with the personal expression of individuals' fashion style. [35:44] Partnering with their clients: Hobby Horse’s great website and catalog, and how they help support and educate customers. [40:05] What Suzi think judges look for in the competitive arenda. [43:44] The importance of dressing well to compete and the differences between English and Western fashion styles. [48:04] Suzi’s funny story of how she answers others' questions about what she does for a living. [49:50] The importance of looking your best during a competition. Join Elise and Dave as they wrap up Grant Morrison's debut tale on the Doom Patrol book ("Crawling From the Wreckage") - a little too neatly, if you ask Dave. We see intimations of Walter White in The Chief and Twin Peaks' green glove in the heartwarming finale. "Curdle yr pilgrimage" is the new "check yr privilege".
