Have you watched this week's YouTube video? I would recommend watching it as it's a really interesting one. I taught a symposium in Idaho late last year and I had a super student on a Lusitano and he started anticipating. So I shared how we worked with him when he started to anticipate the canter transition. If you have a horse that starts anticipating and getting tense, it can be hard. I would recommend working on some circles and patterns and focusing on tempo. Dressage is definitely the hardest sport!I also shared an update about Harvey, he's going to stay with my mom in Colorado for a year to have a break and just hang out in the pasture for a year.I want to remind you all to love and cherish your horses and appreciate every day you have with them.PS. This month, we've been looking at holistic, complementary and alternative therapies for horses. We've met holistic healer Jo Rose and Ian Thirkell, the man behind Arc Equine and we've talked about Zoopharmacognosy with Joanna Haslam. In this episode, we meet a lady that has a gift for communicating with animals. She grew up with dogs and horses and remembers first communicating with a horse at the age of 10-years-old. She trained as a healer with what is now known as The Healing Trust 21-years-ago and developed her spiritual understanding and view of the world by attending workshops and courses ranging from soul development and shamanism to crystal and colour healing. She is a qualified teacher, and a trained Equine Assisted Psychotherapist, but she joined us to talk about her experiences as a horse whisperer. Listen to Karen Lyon talk about what animals tell her, how they tell her and how she translates their messages for their owners, and what Katie's Lusitano Biba (Ibéria) told her. (Note: The only thing Karen knew about Katie's horse was that she could be a little contrary. This was the first time she had met Biba.). Hop over to subscribe to our YouTube channel to watch Karen communicating with Katie's Lusitano mare, Biba, and find out what Biba the Diva had to say!
Morning! This week, we chat a turnout dilemma and discuss the pro's and con's of warmbloods vs lusitanos. Joanna also shares her autumnal to do list with the horses... which she should have written back in the summer!Hope you enjoy, Lots of love, Joanna & Evie x Hosted on Acast. Rupert is the creative force behind Horse Boy, Rowan is his mentor, teacher and muse. Together all aspects of Horse Boy begin and from there the wider team helps to develop each aspect.Rupert Isaacson was born in 1967 in London to a South African mother and Zimbabwean father, and grew up half in London, half on a remote horse farm in the British countryside and also with Africa looming large in his life. Coming from a family of pioneers and adventurers – Russian Jews who went to Africa on his father's side, British, Dutch and mixed race settlers on his mother's side – Rupert's grandparents were journalists, war correspondents, cattle ranchers and artists. His father is an architect and his mother a sculptor. So making your own destiny is something he grew up with. A journalist for the British and American press from the early 1990s (Daily and Sunday Telegraph, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, Independent on Sunday, Esquire, National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveller – among others), he has also published several guidebooks to Africa and India, and is he author of three non-fictional memoirs: The Healing Land (a New York Times Notable Book), which tells the story of his family in Africa, and of his own time spent living with the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert; The Horse Boy (a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller), which tells the story of his journey across Mongolia on horseback with his autistic son Rowan; and The Long Ride Home, which tells of the three subsequent healing journeys he and his son made to Africa, Australia and the Navajo Reservation, as well as his discovery of how horses can help autism and special needs in general.Rupert also runs the Horse Boy Foundation, from his New Trails ranch near Austin, Texas, which offers services to autism families, and helps direct several satellite centers offering similar services in North America and Europe. In partnership with Iliane Lorenz he also teaches Horse Boy Method, Horse Boy Learning (a homeschool technique aimed at autism, ADD and ADHD families among others), and other kinetic learning techniques, along with Stress Free Dressage, a way of introducing riders to the higher levels of equitation without being screamed at(!).A successful documentary filmmaker – The Horse Boy and Endangerous – and write and conceiver of reality TV shows (The Quest – which aired on ABC in 2014 – was his original concept and he helped produce the show), and in addition his mainstream Hollywood projects include The Horse Boy feature film and The Goth Lords.A career in human rights runs parallel to all this. In 2004 he founded the Indigenous Land Rights Fund, which helps hunting and gathering tribes gain legal title to their ancestral land and which helped the Bushmen of Botswana win the largest land claim in African history in 2006 – as a result of which he is now banned from Botswana (!).Finally there is his first love – horses both cross country riding, and classical dressage (he works closely with the Valenca Family in Portugal and studies with Christian Bachinger of the Spanish Riding School of Vienna). A small time breeder of Lusitano horses, Rupert relaxes by reading historical novels, planting trees and drinking beer, especially IPAs. He quite likes wine too. Do you ever meet people in this life that you are immediately drawn to? What is the defining factor for you? For us, often it's a blend of grit, charisma, authenticity and a multifaceted skillset - which this episode's guest certainly has in spades! Like many of the equestrian parents we've spoken to, Ali Surrey Dane has multiple hats to wear... She runs and owns a livery yard - Hurston Dressage and Eventing She's a British Dressage Coaching Certificate L3 coach and List 3 British Dressage judge She's a rider (although seems to take that title with a pinch of salt!) She's a Non-Executive Director for both the British Grooms Association and the Equestrian Employers Association Of course, she's also a mummy, too - to one gorgeous little boy, Rafael! How does she do it all... we'll never really know! But, on a sunny day in mid-March, we got up close and personal with the wonderful lady, herself. In this episode, listeners can hear a little bit more about... What Ali really think the equestrian industry needs more of (Clue: it's not horses!) How she managed to buy herself a little Lusitano gelding... and not a big warmblood mare? How a rough pregnancy doesn't necessarily mean a slow return to riding! Her son and his namesake How equestrian employers need to make changes for parents to sustain their own businesses Plus, much more... in true Equestrian Mums Club fashion! --- Want to hear more from the Equestrian Mums Club?
In January I visited Portugal again with CAVAGO for the very first Global Horse Dreamtours. In 6 days I experienced some of the best of Portugal's equestrian activities. And again I was so lucky to meet some of Portugal's equestrian professionals for an interview for the HorseHeroes podcast. Listen and enjoy all of their amazing stories. These series are powered by Cavago; The world-leading equestrian booking platform His passion for horses started in the early years of his life. He started riding as a child and his masters were Luis Valença and Dr. Guilherme Borba. In 1984, he joined the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art as a rider, where he continues to work and is currently a Mestre-Picador. He is also a riding instructor and trains riders of different nationalities in individual lessons in his stables in Lisbon. Given his huge passion for horses and specifically for the Lusitano breed, he began as a breeder in 1989 when he founded the stud farm Lusitanos d'Atela. His daughter Ines has had contact with horses since she was a baby. Having been brought up in the studfarm, she was keen to have a professional life in the equine industry too. She went on to study Veterinary Medicine at Lisbon University and then spent some years abroad gaining experience in different areas of the veterinary world. Enjoy the proud story of Inês and Francisco Bessa de Carvalho in this interview!

For conductor and baritone Malcolm J. Merriweather, artistic inspiration has largely sprung from asking questions related to his identity. What role does his work as a Black musician play within the larger tapestry of music history? Who are the artists of the past who contributed to the legacy he's inherited today? As director of the New York Philharmonic Chorus and music director of the Dessoff Choirs, Merriweather spends his days bringing to life great choral works from the Renaissance through the 21st century. But two composers — who happened to live 400 years apart — have proved his primary focus over the past several years: Margaret Bonds, a contributor to the Harlem Renaissance; and Vicente Lusitano, an Afro-Portuguese musician who's considered the first published Black composer. Merriweather has led the Dessoff Choirs in performances of both composers' music, oftentimes programming their work alongside that of their contemporaries. Which, in the case of Lusitano, includes Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and Giovanni Palestrina — who also happens to be an important figure in the ensemble's early history. "It's part of the Dessoff Choirs' mission to bring underperformed and underrepresented music and composers to the concert stage," Merriweather says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "That's been part of our mission since our founding in 1924 by Margarete Dessoff, a German Jewish immigrant. At that time, she was bringing the music of Palestrina to this country, which had never been heard here." In this episode, Merriweather and I talk more about his relationship to Margaret Bonds's music, and how his critically acclaimed recordings of her songs led him to London to hear Lusitano's works for the first time. Plus, he shares how the act of baking nourishes his mind and body, why he has to make his bed first thing in the morning, and his favorite restaurant in Harlem for American-Senagalese fusion cuisine. — Classical Post® is a leading podcast based in New York. Our content uncovers the creativity behind exceptional music through dynamic deep-dive interviews with prominent artists in the world today. We are powered by Gold Sound Media® — a creative studio providing omnichannel marketing and public relations services for the classical music industry.

Deze podcast is powered by Paardenpas! Meer weten over paardenvakanties. A BBC e o jornal The Guardian redescobriram a vida e obra de Vicente Lusitano, compositor português de ascendência africana do século XVI.
In September i was a guest at Quinta do Falcão. This Equestrian venue aimes at all levels of riders, from those who are just starting to practice, to the most experienced. Classes will be carried out in various disciplines, such as Dressage , Working Equitation, Classical Portuguese Riding, or simply relax on a pleasant hack through the countryside and by the river. At the day I recorded this podcast, I already had one dressage lesson and for the first time in my life i experienced a working equation lesson. On a Portuguese saddle, riding with one hand, which was incredible cool and fun. Together with some other guests from Germany, Sweden and Holland we had a fantastic day and dinner and very late at night there was time to record this interview. So imagine the setting, at 11 at night, sitting on a terras outside in a warm September night in Portugal. And there i am having an interview with Rui Salvador, the owner of the farm and one of the first figures in Panorama dos Cavaleiros, with an unique passion for what he does and, essentially, for the daily work with his horses. His Partner Sandra Strecht, who runs the daily work with the guests and has all the plans and ideas about the packages and holidays on the farm. And last but not least Pedro Teixeira Farto, the main rider is a true horse lover who likes to learn every day, improve and pass on his knowledge to everyone interested and put's a smile on everyone's face! We talk about their family, the love for the Lusitano's and ofcourse the big event Feira da Golegã. So put you feet up, sit back and enjoy listening to this interview!> Want to know more about Quinta do FalcãoPlease visit the website Paardenpas for all the information and bookings.> HorseHeroes is an production of EHS communications, a marketing & communications office, based in The Netherlands.
**This podcast is powered by Paardenpas - Horse riding holidays ... all over the world ... From 12-16th september 2022, I went for a trip to Portugal. And the first few days I was a guest at Monte Veljo. Monte Velho prides itself on being a working breeding farm with a hotel, not a hotel that happens to be on a breeding farm. In the spring and summer, the mares foal out in the field. The horses are weaned, started and trained by the same trainers who also teach the lessons in an open environment, where the hotel guests can observe. Some of the horses that they breed go to competitions, or get trained to be sold, while others become schoolmasters for the hotel. The pride off the farm was their Olympic dressage stallion Equador MVL. Together with his longtime best friend and rider João Torrão they wrote history for Portugal and the Lusitano breed. Unfortunately their Olympic hero Equador MVL passed away last may. In this episode i'll talk to Diogo Lima Mayer JR, the man who runs the incredible dressage facility and ofcourse also the mainrider of the horses with an incredible story, the wonderfull João Torrão. About this fabulous place, their Lusitano horses and ofcourse their legacy - Equador MVL in an very open and again emotional conversation.> Want to know more about about Monte Velho Equo ResortPlease visit the website Paardenpas for all the information and bookings.> HorseHeroes is an production of EHS communications, a marketing & communications office, based in The Netherlands.

Tickets & Sponsorships ~ click here For ticketing & donation questions, contact Donna Larocque: donna@theequuseffect.org — Join Us For Our Tenth Anniversary Celebration — This year Jane Strong and David Sonatore will do a live demonstration to show you exactly how we cultivate the kind of non-verbal communication that builds trust and cooperation from our horses. These skills translate directly to the self awareness, emotional intelligence and mental agility it takes to succeed in relationships with others at home and in their communities. And, we'll give you the chance to experience for yourself how The Equus Effect Program engages horses with the men and women we serve to promote respect, attunement, empathy and collaboration. We are also fortunate enough to have Bettina Drummond's protégé Elizabeth David-Zoerhof demonstrate the power of collaboration at the big Quarry Hill Arena. In this dramatic musical performance, you'll see just how this trust translates to the highest form of the equestrian arts. Elizabeth's horse ‘Xarrie' is a 12 year-old buckskin Lusitano. They both trained with Bettina and use the same ground skills we teach to begin the ascent to this magnificent collaboration between horse and human. And once again, we are excited to have the fabulous Joint Chiefs accompany the performance!

This episode is more serious than the more recent eps as I cover the recent world debut of our Andalusian x Lusitano colt, Rory. His dam, Reina, was a neglected founder case… and a broodmare. And because of the heartbreaking nature of her situation, we faced some seriously tough decisions, and still will. Thank you guys for listening. Please leave a review for us & follow the socials(:
