Whether we invite it in, or it arrives as an unexpected guest, our best strategy for dealing with it, is to learn how to be adaptable." In this episode, Helena is joined by her husband Buck to discuss not one, but several big changes happening at Hoo Hollow. 3 Shortcuts You NEED to Stop Taking in Your Riding!

Instant gratification.  It is a very real thing in the world we live in.  People see the thing they want and, without doing a whole of anything, expect to have the same thing.  Equestrians often suffer from this same issue.  Instead of being on a path to better riding, they are guilty of taking shortcuts... And then wonder why, after time goes by, they never really get anywhere. The shortcuts are more like little circles.  They feel like they're taking you forward initially, but then you will inevitably end up back in the same place all over again.  Following a tried and a trusted path takes time.  Doing the work and putting in the effort also takes time.  And yet, it is the riders who are willing to start slow and then, over time, speed up, that see the results. What Shortcuts in Riding Look Like There are things that take time to develop and strengthen.  Suppleness, straightness, impulsion, contact...  Now, I realize that these are all steps on the training scale, but many shortcuts are based on trying to short circuit the results when it comes to one of the above. The reality is that, when you take a shortcut, you begin crumbling the foundations... I believe that the foundations of all horses and riders are relaxation and rhythm.  Take a shortcut, and look for one or both of the above to disappear.  Excess tension, choppy steps, increase in speed, heaviness, and so many other things are the symptoms of lack of rhythm and relaxation. Commit to doing the work and taking the time when it comes to improving yourself and your horse   Read More... You know that feeling when you try something new and you get it right. Maybe your trainer or instructor is with you. Or maybe you just prepared. But, for whatever reason, you got it right. You feel like a better rider. Good feeling, hey?  Until the next time you try… Maybe on your own. A couple of days later. Aaaannnnndddd nothing! Whatever it was that allowed you to create the perfect circumstances before is now missing and you’re back to square one. And a thirsty square one, because now you have tasted the potential of this new thing! Leveling up in riding is a tough one for many riders. And I believe it is because they don’t take the 3 factors necessary to be upgraded into their approach. Emotional, mental, and physical. Conversations of a Better Rider... I think as riders, we often underestimate the conversations going on in our heads. We don’t take into account the ongoing chatter that our mind creates when we do ‘the thing’. Which can have a serious impact on what is happening in the saddle. You can upgrade the skills. Even upgrade the knowledge of what to do with these skills. But if you don’t upgrade what you think about it; nothing will change It is a harsh fact and one that holds so many riders back. However, mindset is just one element that can hold you back from becoming a better rider… And, as I said, if all 3 are not being developed together, it creates a ceiling for you and your riding. What has changed for you in your riding? If you are not intentionally making a small (or the odd large) tweak here and there, I’m willing to guess that your answer is ‘Not a whole lot’… Albert Einstein said it and there’s a reason it is repeated by people who try to help others. “Insanity; doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result”. But it seems that there are a lot of riders out there who think this doesn’t apply to them. They're riding the same exercises, the same way.  The same thoughts running the show - and then complain when nothing changes! If you want to change something in your riding, you are going to have to do just that… Change something.  Be intentional about doing something differently. Choosing 1 Thing to Do Differently Now, if you have just had an ah-ha moment, or I’ve hit a bit of a nerve, hold on… Many riders, when they realize that they are the very thing holding themselves back, throw themselves headfirst into change. New saddle, new exercises, new routine, and schedule. New instructor, new yard, or, maybe, new horse! Whoa there… If you change everything at once, how will you know what has worked? Read More... Have you been feeling a little overwhelmed when it comes to finding exercises to ride with your horse in the arena? Have you found yourself creating more and more complex grids, and then struggling to make them work for you and your horse? If so, here is a simple exercise you can use this month to help minimize the overwhelm and get you in the saddle and making progress. All you need are 3 or 5 ground poles and a fairly flat piece of land to ride on if you don’t have access to an arena. The key to this exercise is intention regarding what you are doing and attention to how well things are going. Attention to detail is important when working on simple. It is what makes simple really work and help propel you and your horse forward in your training. Lay Out the Poles for the Exercise To get set up, find the quarter line of your arena. If you are working in an open space, such as a paddock or field, simply find a flat area with enough space to lay the poles out in a straight line. Read More... Is every 30-minute ride starting to look and feel the same for you? Even the ones that you painstakingly chose exercises to work on? Annoying, isn’t it? Especially because actually ‘moving forward' in your riding is the reason you are riding! If this is the case, firstly, take heart that you’re not alone! Remaining focused throughout the day to day riding can really begin to wear on most well-intentioned riders after a while. And can even cause riding to begin dropping off your list of priorities…! This is why I suggest a 3 pronged approach to developing your weekly riding plan in a way that keeps things interesting and moving forward... A plan that will take you, clearly, on a path to your goals. Part 1 is to introduce regular intentional Fun to your riding. From there, Part 2 is working on deepening your Partnership with your horse. Which leads us to... Part 3 - Developing Doing the work. This is part that most riders are good at talking about, planning about, and even trying in the arena. You have probably found yourself on more than one occasion in the arena, exercise all mapped out in your head. And yet realizing, in absolute dismay, that it is just not coming together for you. The key is to begin making ‘the work’ actually work for you and your horse! Developing is another name for training. I personally believe that both horse and rider need training in order to move forward in their relationship. Often, most horse and rider combinations begin with one team member not being as advanced as the other. In this case, the more advanced or developed team members will help to ‘lift’ the other to their level. The schoolmaster horse or the more experienced rider. However, at some point, most horse and rider partnerships will reach a level where they are now matching in their skills and abilities. And this can be where so many begin to plateau. Read More... How many days will you ride this week? What will you do on each of those days? Are all of these things moving you and your horse closer to your goals? Big questions… And ones that I think not enough riders are taking responsibility for in their riding. This is part 2 of a 3 part series to help you really become intentional about your riding plan.  Each part is an important element that, I believe, is absolutely essential for you in your riding. It is when you combine these three elements on a weekly basis, weaving them throughout your rides, that you will begin to see true success in your riding. Part 1 was Fun. The reason most people show up for their second-ever ride. And the reason most riders actually stop riding as much as they like. It just isn’t as much fun anymore. Find out how and why you can make Fun an intentional part of your riding plan HERE Part 2 - Partnership It seems so, well, obvious. Partnership. However, because it is so obvious, like fun, many riders forget to actually be intentional about developing this in their riding and relationship with their horse. Partnership is trust. It is the relationship. A partnership is the ‘liking each other’ part that will be essential to get you both over any sticky situations that show up. It is intentionally developing the understanding between horse and rider. This allows you not only to trust each other more but also to build confidence in your own abilities as well. Ever noticed how you feel more confident about something you must-do if you have someone who supports you there beside you? That is a partnership. Read More... Danash's Northern Tempest (Dani) is an Appaloosa/Friesian cross that competes on Southern Florida's Hunter circuit. Dani was named as the 2021 BreyerFest Celebration horse. You can follow Dani on Instagram @ Danithewonderhorse.Meet the BreyerFest 2021 Celebration Horse, Danash's Northern Tempest aka Dani! Dani will be the headline star of the 2021 BreyerFest Horse of a Different Color, held July 16-18, 2021. Her underdog story in the hunter rings with owner/rider Laura Reece and trainer Ashley Glica of ATG Equestrian truly embodies Breyer's Horse of a Different Color theme for 2021, and models can only be obtained by purchasing select BreyerFest tickets. But Dani's announcement as Breyer's 2021 Celebration Horse was just the cherry on top to a fantastic first week of 2021, as the striking 2013 Appaloosa Friesian mare was named Circuit Champion in USHJA 2' Hunters at ESP's Holiday Finale. The colorful mare also took a win in the Marshall & Sterling Medal Class and competed in the 15-17 Children's Equitation division with Francesca Moore in the irons.Danash's Northern Tempest (aka Dani) is a 2013 Leopard Appaloosa Friesian cross mare (Danash K x Chief’s Bold Angel) registered with Friesian Heritage Horse & Sporthorse International as well as with the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). Dani is owned by Palm Beach Sport Horses of West Palm Beach, Florida and is trained by Ashley Glica of ATG Equestrian in Loxahatchee, Florida. Dani was born in Michigan and bred by Jessica Bowman of North Horse Farm in Cheboygan. She was purchased as a filly by Jessica Collins and relocated to Southern Florida where she was slowly and properly started under the close eye of Brandy Rivas at Equines and Equestrians in Southwest Ranches. In 2017 she was purchased by Palm Beach Sport Horses, and makes her home at ATG Equestrian in Loxahatchee. Under the keen eye of ATG's Ashley Glica, Dani has quickly become an exceptional sport horse, winning Circuit Champion in Rusty Stirrup at ESP in 2019-2020 as well as several notable ribbons in Hunter Derby, USHJA, and Green Hunter Classes at the 2020 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, Florida. She has also spent the fall perfecting her style in the hunter ring, including numerous USHJA National Hunter Derbies and the Low Children's Hunter classes. While Dani is not the typical Hunter horse, she is a shining example of her lineage's versatility and a divergence from the typical sporthorses seen in Wellington. She has been recognized through a multitude of media outlets and has an active, engaged, and quickly growing following on social media. She is the Fall 2020 cover model for Equine America magazine, and along with Laura Reece of Palm Beach Sporthorses was the October 2020 cover for Wellington Magazine. She was profiled in Chronicle of the Horse in early 2020, has starred in numerous fun and fashion photo shoots, and was chosen to appear in an editorial for famed children’s photographer Olesja Mueller for publication in La Belle Kidz magazine. Much of her popularity has come from social media where she has her own Instagram account: @danithewonderhorse.ApHC Small Horse Program (Link)Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Appaloosa)

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy… Or so the saying goes. I tend to believe this is true. Especially when it comes to riders and their horses. Yes, ‘working’ is important. But, if you are only riding to ride… Well, maybe that is what is actually holding you back in your riding? I think that in order to really get the most from your riding plan to help you reach your goals, there are 3 key components. Not just work! Fun is just as important. And if you have been riding for any length of time, you will know that fun begins to wane after a while. One of the biggest reasons that riders don’t ride as much as they say they want to - is down to riding simply not being as much fun as it once was! Creating a plan for your riding is not just about the days you ride. It is also about finding a balance between 3 key elements that, I believe, are essential. Including these 3 elements will allow you to work towards your riding goals, while keeping things inspired, focused and interesting for all involved. Because, after all, that’s what Team Leaders do, right?! Read More... We are all guilty of wasting time at some point or another in our day to day lives. However, I want to challenge you for 1 month to NOT waste any more of your time with your horse. Riding for the sake of saying you rode is a waste of time. Clocking in the hours is not the same as being productive with those hours. And if you have stopped riding or you’re not riding as much as you ‘want’… Could it be that the riding you were doing was ‘wasting time’ rather than working towards something that really inspired you? Change is Okay & Maybe Necessary As I write this we are getting ready to begin the final month of 2020. The official year of the curveball. December is always a time when most people do a little review of what was, and begin planning goals for the new year. I personally don’t think you have to wait until the official end of a calendar year to do this, meaning if you are reading this in July 2021, apply this now! The world as a whole has changed so much recently, is it possible that the goals you set for yourself and your horse in December 2019 might need to be tweaked? Or even scrapped? Has this year benefited you regarding focus and identifying what is a priority? Or has it left you feeling uncertain about anything? I want you to read or listen to this with an open mind. A clean slate. And I would love it if you could set some goals with that same openness and readiness to start new and fresh if necessary. Read More... Horses are amazing creatures. They can help you make a living in so many ways, but they’re also intuitive, kind, caring animals that deserve all the love and attention you can give. Erica Hills has always loved horses, but when she realized that she could combine her love of horses with her passion for photography she knew she’d found her calling.    She initially went to college to pursue a degree in psychology. In fact she earned her Bachelors and later went back for her Master’s as well. But a career in counseling teenagers coupled with a lack of concern for herself led to a state of burnout. She knew there had to be something better.    Luckily she already had a pretty decent camera and connections with several friends who had horses and stables which were imperative to her equine photography business. And that, as they say, was that. She has since made leaps and bounds in her business and is quickly becoming known as the go to equine photographer in her area.    Listen as we chat about her background, her love for school, and why she’s so happy she’s made the change into this new business endeavor. To think that she owes it all to a podcast that she used to listen to where she was first introduced to the world of equine photography!   You won’t want to miss this amazing story.   In This Episode: [02:13] Welcome to the show, Erica! [03:06] Erica shares how she got started in equine photography and what she is doing now. [05:10] Listen as Erica speaks about her psychology degree, school counseling, and the transition into photography. [08:23] How she found out about equine photography. [13:30] Erica gives one tip for anyone who wants to become an equine photographer. [15:21] “Sometimes people don’t take your pursuit seriously, and it can be frustrating.” [17:16] Erica discusses the conventions she has gone to that have been the most beneficial. [19:05] Jenn speaks about a retreat she put together with a client before the pandemic. [21:09] Erica shares what she practiced, giving her the confidence to build a business. [22:53] Sometimes, you win, and sometimes you learn. [27:03] Canva is Erica’s favorite business tool. [30:01] Erica shares her favorite quote of all time. You have a unique language as a rider. A unique way that you do things when you are with your horse, both on the ground and in the saddle. In fact, every single other rider in the world also has their own unique language. Which is great; special snowflakes and all that. The trouble starts when your horse learns someone’s unique language; someone other than you… Once a horse has learned to do something or to associate a specific action with a specific response, it requires consistent diligent attention from the rider to retrain the horse. Retrain the horse to their way of doing things. And this is important. Failing to retrain your horse will result in mixed results, frustration, and eventual resentment for both horse and rider. Yoga for Equestrians I had been practicing yoga for about 5 years when I got my first horse at age 51.  The year was 2005.  My goal was to ride a lot and, although I considered myself fit, my body was feeling the aches and pains of daily horseback riding.  Changing my yoga routine to compensate for the muscles I was using as an equestrian really helped me get through the initial period of intense riding. Yoga helped so much, I tried talking my yoga instructor into letting me develop a class specific to equestrians. She wasn’t into horses, and I didn’t know enough people with horses to inspire a special class.  My plans for a “Yoga for Equestrians” class fizzled out.  Recently I brought up in casual conversation among my horse friends that I was once a yoga instructor.   Then they asked if I would be interested in teaching a class.  That got me to thinking about yoga again.   While I’m too busy to add a yoga class to my plate, I found a qualified horsewoman who has developed a “Yoga for Equestrians” program.  Gabrielle Diakon is a yoga instructor with a passion for horses.  Gabrielle has constructed yoga workout videos especially designed for those of us who ride.  Now, in these times of COVID quarantines, yoga online seems the perfect solution. Did you know that almost anything you can do from the saddle, with your horse, you can do from the end of the lunge line? And the words lunge line there are important. I often chat with riders who believe in free lunging or loose lunging. They are not lunging! Lunging is when you are using your aids, both natural and artificial, to actively improve your conversation with your horse through your aids. And correct lunging is one of the best ways to begin re-training or re-schooling your horse, regardless of your abilities (or lack of abilities) when in the saddle. So many riders struggle with re-training because their aids lack consistency when riding. They ‘think’ they are saying one thing to their horse, but meanwhile, their horse is hearing something completely different! Lunging removes this challenge. When you lunging, you can clearly see - in real-time - how your horse responds to your aids. Not how you think he is responding. You take on the perspective of a trainer. And you can do this in a few simple steps... Read More... #BlackLivesMatter means the black community deserves to be heard, embraced, and celebrated, especially in the horse world. We are Equestrians first, whether we’re bay or gray shouldn’t matter, and yet it does. Still.Stall and Stable is a podcast about happy horsekeeping, and we believe that starts with happy horse owners. In an effort to move the dial of racism down to zero, Helena welcomes to the conversation today, two lovely, smart women who know a thing or two about horses, podcasting, and grace. Abriana and Caitlin from the Young Black Equestrians podcast explain the origins of their show, what frustrates them as black horse people, and how white people can start advocating for their fellow horsemen and women of color. As a rider, it can be easy to think that the only way you can improve your skills is to ride.  And yes, riding is important; obviously! However, you can also use lunging as a way to develop your coordination and aids. And not just on the ground, but also to benefit you and your horse when you’re in the saddle as well.   Lunging gives you a different perspective when you ride.  And often, this one simple change can be enough to burst through limitations in your riding.  You see, when you are riding, it is easy to believe that things are happening a certain way.  That things ‘look’ a certain way.  However, if you have ever watched a video of yourself riding, you will know that this is often not true. Lunging gives you second by second feedback on how your horse is actually responding to your aids; not how you ‘think’ your horse is responding to your aids.  And it is so easy to get started with, even if you have never lunged before. I have a step by step system HERE you can use.   Read More...   Additional Resources & Information:- 4 Essentials for Getting Started with Lunging The Balance of Aids in Riding Lunging for Riding Daily Strides Podcast Free Online Community for Equestrians

Jessica and Jaclyn from Equivont have built an incredible community of Equestrians. They sat down with us and shared the nitty-gritty of what it looked like in the beginning, how their vision and business have changed and evolved. Business growth isn't linear. It's a messy journey that takes time and careful thought. Jessica and Jaclyn attribute their success to their community, building a place where people came come to find what they need, connect with like-minded equestrians, and sell their services.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=87421)
