There's a difference between how long you live and how well you live. And watching someone you love lose their health changes everything about how you see that gap. I am reposting this episode of Your Journey to Joy Podcast. I get personal. I recorded this one on my dad's 92nd birthday — and if you've ever watched a parent's health decline, you know exactly the mix of emotions that comes with that.

What if joy isn't something you earn after you've fixed your life - but the thing that helps you build it in the first place? This week I'm joined by life coach, retreat host and founder of The Joy Project, Meg Holloway. After leaving a corporate career and moving to the Lake District, Meg trained as a coach and built a business around a simple but powerful idea: joy is not the reward at the end of the journey - it's the strategy that helps you navigate it. In this conversation we explore how Meg transformed herself from someone who describes her younger self as "proper glass half empty" into a coach who helps people get out of their own way and take action on the things that matter most. We talk about:Why so many people are waiting for permission before they start the business, launch a project, change careers or pursue the life they really want. Meg's philosophy of "messy action" and how tiny imperfect steps build self-trust far more effectively than endless planning. Fear of failure, fear of judgement and the stories we tell ourselves that keep us stuck. Why community, connection and finding "your people" matters more than ever. Why learning to "date yourself" can be one of the most powerful things you do.Finding joy during one of the most difficult periods of her life following a serious health challenge, and why that experience ultimately reinforced everything she teaches. If you've ever felt stuck, waited for permission, or wondered whether it's too late to make a change, I think you'll get a lot from this one.Follow Meg: https://www.instagram.com/megg.holloway/Support the podcast: Get a whopping 65% off your first Gousto box at: https://www.gousto.co.uk/raf/?promo_code=TOM42277653Mentioned in the Podcast:The Joy Project: https://www.instagram.com/thejoyprojectcoach/The Joy Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/3guaT24uvN1gky41cYfLe7?si=c1f9d15084674cf4Join the mailing list:https://substack.com/@tombryanyeah?utm_campaign=profile&utm_medium=profile-pageGet in contact:https://www.instagram.com/tombryanyeah/https://www.facebook.com/greatbritishadventurespodcasthttps://www.threads.net/@tombryanyeahChaptersChapters:00:00 Intro01:58 Life in the Lakes16:50 Training to be a Life Coach23:04 Joy is the strategy, not the reward33:03 How to chance a mindset39:08 Overcoming Cringe47:58 The Joy Project52:21 You're not stuck, you're just waiting for permission56:25 Take messy action01:01:15 Pause, pivot, progress01:04:00 The Strech Zone01:11:20 Dating yourself01:22:30 Bossing life on your own01:38:24 Meg's recent health scare01:53:20 Meeting someone01:57:01 The problem with dating apps
For a while now I've wanted to record a quick episode talking about some of the simplest ways to fight for joy. Over the past 8 seasons of this podcast, I've shared hundreds of tools that can help in the fight for joy…things that we can implement into our lives that help us fight against the “joy stealers” that life in this broken world can bring, because no matter what we're going through, there ARE practical, and powerful ways to move towards joy! To fight for it…and find it! But sometimes we can overthink it and we can overlook some of the most simple tools. Obviously there are times when counseling is the best path. Or times when you'll need medication…or times when you need to make significant changes in regards to your schedule, your lifestyle, your relationships, your weekly routine. But today I wanted to suggest a few simple ways to make some significant progress towards joy that are fairly easy to implement. Almost all of the things I'm going to mention today are free and they are things that can help almost anyone, whether you're in the midst of grief…or just in a funk. Whether your life is falling apart or you're just a little more anxious than normal. We're all going to have times when we just feel “off”. When we are lacking joy. And when we need a little extra encouragement to fight for joy. So, IF you're lacking joy and want some practical help and simple ideas of ways to fight for joy, I hope this episode helps and encourages you! Or that you'll remember to come back to this episode when you DO need it. Or, that you can even pass it along and share it with someone you know who is struggling. *The Fighting for Joy Podcast is sponsored by Better Help, an online counseling service that pairs you with a professional licensed therapist who will combine Biblical wisdom with their clinical expertise in mental health to help you address your unique situation. In this episode, I sat down with Camille Joy, founder of the Moments of Joy Podcast and author of Moments of Joy: 90 Days of Encouragement, published by Penguin Random House. Camille is a trafficking survivor who escaped an abusive situation at 21, became a high school dropout turned executive chef, and fought her way into a six-figure salary by going directly to the CEO. When her youngest son Mason was diagnosed with autism, everything shifted again, and a raw, tear-filled video she recorded in her car after a difficult doctor visit went viral with over six million views in 2022.Today Camille runs two businesses: Moments of Joy, her for-profit media brand built on brand deals, speaking, and her book, and Awesomely Different, her nonprofit that provides swimming lesson grants for children with autism. She also shares how she and her filmmaker husband manage it all without a village, and what it really took to land Holly Robinson Peete as a podcast guest after five attempts over several years.Main TakeawaysYour test is your testimony: Camille's openness about trafficking, autism, and grief is what built her audience and her business.Tackle the shame first: Before you can turn your story into impact, you have to get comfortable sharing what you have been through.Serve before you ask: Camille landed Holly Robinson Peete as a guest by consistently showing up in her community, buying her book, attending her events, and reaching out five times before getting a yes.Caregiving and entrepreneurship can coexist: Camille and her husband run two businesses while raising Mason by communicating constantly, sharing schedules, and giving each other permission to pursue their goals.Highlights Include00:46 - Camille shares what life looked like before the Moments of Joy Podcast existed01:45 - Mason's birth story and three heart surgeries in 18 months02:42 - Receiving Mason's autism diagnosis and how it changed everything04:40 - Camille reveals she is a trafficking survivor and how she escaped at 2106:06 - How a stranger saying her name out loud was the sign she needed to go to culinary school09:14 - Fighting for the executive chef title at ConAir Corporation by CC'ing the CEO11:13 - Going to the CEO directly to demand her six-figure salary and getting it on the spot23:22 - The viral reel that changed everything: 6 to 7 million views after a tearful moment in the car27:06 - Launching Awesomely Different, her nonprofit that teaches children with autism to swim31:52 - Signing with Penguin Random House and the reality of first-round edits38:45 - How Camille and her husband manage two businesses and Mason's care without a traditional village46:01 - Why tackling shame is the first step to turning your test into a testimony52:03 - The strategy behind landing Holly Robinson Peete and why she reached out five times56:17 - Lightning round: resources, role models, daily non-negotiables, and parting adviceLinks Mentioned in This EpisodePodcorn (early podcast sponsorship platform): https://podcorn.comMoments of Joy Podcast: https://www.mojpodcast.com/ Watch & ListenSide Hustle Pro Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/13qDj08lBR4ymzGhXIKy8tSide Hustle Pro Podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/side-hustle-pro/id1126021323Social MediaInstagram: @momentsofjoypodcastTikTok: @momentsofjoypodcast Hosted on Acast. Today's podcast should help offer some incite into how Lutherans read the Bible. In a nutshell…we read it through a lens of faith and grace. Pastor Eric Ohrtman breaks it down into three things we do when reading scripture: 1) We use the Bible to understand it, 2) We put things into context, 3) We read with our eyes on Jesus. He talks through the competing paradoxes of saint and sinner, law and gospel, fear and hope and love. And the importance of reading and hearing it collectively as a church, and how the lectionary is designed to help us do this together.

Heather Wald joins Marnie to talk about the role the Visual Arts team plays in creating the various visual aspects of what we see in worship on Sunday morning and Wednesday night, because worship is designed to be experienced by all our senses. Heather walks through the different colors representing each church season throughout the year (think of it as our own holy rainbow connection). And, for some reason, Heather thinks that show-and-tell will somehow work in a podcast format.

Who was the woman at the well and what makes her interaction with Jesus so authentic? Pastor Eric walks through the structure of the story with Marnie. Along the way, he gives us some background on Samaria and why Jesus chose that specific route. He ends the discussion with the notion of how turning to God turns God to us (yes…you read that sentence correctly).

Spirit of Joy partner, Sioux Falls native, and aerospace engineer, Doug Daniels, joins Marnie in the Full of Joy studio to talk about his complex faith story. Doug shares his history from being raised Catholic to eventually joining the Lutheran church after marrying his wife, Kara. He dives deep into the challenges and questions he has dealt with over the years on his faith journey, and how today he has found the grace he needs to hear. And if you like popular music, he even brings U2 into the discussion.

Pastor Eric and Marnie are in studio to talk about the two sacraments that Lutherans practice. Don't know what they are? You will have to listen in to find out! Eric explains why the Lutheran Church only deals with two sacraments, as opposed to the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. He breaks down the three-part criteria the Lutheran Church uses to determine the two sacraments, walks us through how our Spirit of Joy worship space is organized around these sacraments, and answers a couple questions Marnie has been wondering about.

The Prayer Labyrinth. You may have seen it stretched out on the floor of the Shalom Center during Holy Week or Epiphany. Or maybe you know (or didn't know) that we have one mowed into the grass in our church gardens. But what is it exactly and where did this idea come from? Jodi Hanson joins Marnie to give us more insight into walking the prayer labyrinth. Believe it or not, they have been around since 1200 A.D. (the one at Spirit of Joy is modeled after a labyrinth in the Chartres Cathedral in France). It is a spiritual practice that you can do alone, with a group, at your own pace, to help guide you through prayer and meditation. This episode is day two of the story of Moses, building on what Pastor Eric talked about yesterday (if you haven't listened to Part 1, we recommend checking out that episode first). Today, the story heads back to Egypt for the ten plagues (and Marnie's issue with flies). Then, it continues to the Red Sea, God's presence as a pillar of fire & clouds, wandering the wilderness for forty years, Mount Sinai, and the end of Moses' life. Marnie and Eric conclude by connecting Moses to Jesus and the Gospels.
We have something exciting for this podcast: a two-part episode! Pastor Eric is in studio to really get into the “reeds” about the story of Moses, and there is so much included we are splitting it over two days! Today, Eric chats with Marnie about the first part of Moses' life. The discussion includes the baby in the basket, being raised in the Egyptian royal court, fleeing to Midian, and wraps up with the burning bush. Don't worry, Part 2 will be available tomorrow to finish the discussion.

My guest today is Emily Lanphier. When she was just 28, and pregnant with her third child, she woke up in the middle of the night to a police officer knocking at her door. He was there to tell her that her parents had died together in a car accident. Those of you who are local may remember this horrific story as many of us knew and admired her parents, Ty and Terri Schenzel. Over the last 10+ years, Emily has leaned into her grief AND leaned into joy! As you listen to her story of growing in gratitude and faith, even in extremely difficult circumstances, I think you'll be encouraged in your own fight for joy! *The Fighting for Joy Podcast is sponsored by Better Help, an online counseling service that pairs you with a professional licensed therapist who will combine Biblical wisdom with their clinical expertise in mental health to help you address your unique situation. This week Craig's TV watching habits opened the floodgates to a bigger question. There's a new CNN docu-series about the tragic death of JFK Jr. called “American Prince” and while watching it, Craig somehow got the notion in his head that at some point in history and of all the tragic deaths surrounding The Kennedy family one of them happened to be eaten by a shark. The JFK Jr. story has been on Craig's mind himself, not just because the show he's watching but he too has a pilot's license and is an avid fan of aviation. Have a question for Craig? Craig is fresh off his recent promotional tour for his show SCRABBLE and he reflects on some interviews he did on podcasts. But things very quickly turn to the topic of vampires? Why? It's the new year and we have the first episode of the Joy Podcast of the new year. And what better way to kick off 2026 with Craig checking in with you all? But first some light housekeeping and a quick addressing of a unintentionally controversial take about bagpipes from last week's episode and possibly following it up with another unpopular opinion about more music.
