Condensation: a theory of concepts is a model of concept-formation by Sam Eisenstat. Its goals and methods resemble John Wentworth's natural abstractions/natural latents research.[1] Both theories seek to provide a clear picture of how to posit latent variables, such that once someone has understood the theory, they'll say "yep, I see now, that's how latent variables work!". The goal of this post is to popularize Sam's theory and to give my own perspective on it; however, it will not be a full explanation of the math. For technical details, I suggest reading Sam's paper. Brief Summary Shannon's information theory focuses on the question of how to encode information when you have to encode everything. You get to design the coding scheme, but the information you'll have to encode is unknown (and you have some subjective probability distribution over what it will be). Your objective is to minimize the total expected code-length. Algorithmic information theory similarly focuses on minimizing the total code-length, but it uses a "more objective" distribution (a universal algorithmic distribution), and a fixed coding scheme (some programming language). This allows it to talk about the minimum code-length of specific data (talking about particulars rather than average [...] ---Outline:(00:45) Brief Summary(02:35) Shannons Information Theory(07:21) Universal Codes(11:13) Condensation(12:52) Universal Data-Structure?(15:30) Well-Organized Notebooks(18:18) Random Variables(18:54) Givens(19:50) Underlying Space(20:33) Latents(21:21) Contributions(21:39) Top(22:24) Bottoms(22:55) Score(24:29) Perfect Condensation(25:52) Interpretability Solved?(26:38) Condensation isnt as tight an abstraction as information theory.(27:40) Condensation isnt a very good model of cognition.(29:46) Much work to be done! These texts and others, Givens suggests, portray Christ apophatically: that is, by showing who Christ was not, in order to illuminate who Christ therefore must be. In addition to the novels themselves, Givens cites sources such as personal correspondence and important theological works, thus bringing an English-speaking public to greater depth of understanding than would be possible simply by reading Russian novels in translation. Dr. Terri Givens is a regular "Friend of the Show" on Trending in Ed and a professor of political science at the University of British Columbia and author of Radical Empathy. She joins host Mike Palmer to discuss the current challenges facing higher education and academic associations, the importance of collaboration, and how individuals can take action in a chaotic world. Key Takeaways: Higher education faces significant disruptions, including declining enrollment, reduced research funding, and a shift towards an adjunct-focused model. Academic associations are crucial for faculty development and networking but struggle with declining membership and funding. There's a growing demand for academic associations to take political stances, which is challenging for their 501(c)(3) status. Collaboration and strategic planning are essential for academic associations and universities to navigate current challenges. The current political landscape highlights systemic issues like racism and discrimination, underscoring the need for mutual aid and community involvement. Empathy and taking action are vital in addressing societal and educational challenges, as discussed in Dr. Givens' upcoming book, Reckoning. It's crucial for higher education to better articulate its value, especially that of a liberal education, beyond just job prospects. The politicization of higher education is a concern, but it also presents an opportunity for institutions to unite and promote their positive impact. A historical and global perspective helps us understand and navigate current challenges, recognizing that societies have overcome major hurdles before. Why You Should Listen: Gain insights into the significant challenges and disruptions impacting higher education and academic associations today. Learn about the critical role of academic associations and why their struggles have a "domino effect" on the broader academic landscape. Understand the call for greater collaboration and strategic foresight within higher education to address current and future crises. Hear Dr. Givens' perspective on how individuals can find agency and make an impact in a chaotic world, emphasizing local action and mutual aid. Explore the intersection of politics and education, and why staying politically involved is essential for everyone. Discover why higher education needs to re-articulate its value and address issues like declining male enrollment. Tune in to hear Dr. Terri Givens share her extensive experience and sharp analysis on the state of higher education, the role of academic associations, and the power of empathy and action in these turbulent times. Send us a textWhat if everything you thought you knew about salvation was fundamentally mistaken? Suppose the very ability to repent isn't something you generate but something God must grant? This profound conversation explores the revolutionary concept that "even repentance requires sovereign permission."The discussion centers around Romans 3:24, where Paul writes that believers are "justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." This little word "freely" revolutionizes our understanding of salvation. It doesn't merely suggest salvation costs nothing—though that's true from our perspective—but reveals something deeper about how God operates. One particularly illuminating analogy compares salvation to the relationship between Mike Tyson and his former wife Robin Givens. Tyson did all the work—training relentlessly, absorbing punishment, earning victory—while Givens simply received the benefits and cashed the checks. Similarly, Christ did all the work of salvation while believers simply receive the benefits without contributing anything but their sin. This understanding challenges popular misconceptions about salvation. If justification comes freely through Christ's finished work, then it cannot be lost through insufficient works. If God is the one who works in believers "both to will and to do," then authentic faith must inevitably produce good works. These truths provide tremendous security while highlighting the stark difference between biblical Christianity and works-based religious systems. The conversation ultimately reveals that while salvation costs us nothing, it cost God everything—the Father giving His Son, and the Son giving His life. This paradox of something freely given yet infinitely costly stands at the heart of Christian faith. Have you fully embraced the implications of being justified freely by God's grace? The Balance of GrayGod, doubt, and proof walk into a podcast... it goes better than you'd expect!Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

It's time to start a new year and new book for our long-form deep dive reviews of terrible Mormon books. And this one is… not terrible? The Givens present a form of Mormon theology which tries to “make sense of life” and we're here for any Mormon theology that doesn't include discrimination, sexism, and anything holding it over from its past. We dive into the introduction and first chapter of the book. But, what would a book review be without some due diligence about the authors? We spend the first portion talking about Terryl and Fiona Givens, their histories, publishing careers, and try to get a sense for what we can expect throughout this book.   Terryl and Fiona Givens: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiona_Givens https://www.fionagivens.com/about https://www.patheos.com/topics/2014-religious-trends/mormon/joseph-smith-on-mormon-women-and-the-priesthood-fiona-givens-071014?p=2 https://www.dialoguejournal.com/articles/the-perfect-union-of-man-and-womanreclamation-and-collaboration-in-joseph-smiths-theology-making/ https://www.dialoguejournal.com/articles/missing-and-restoring-meaning/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terryl_Givens https://www.terrylgivens.com/about https://web.archive.org/web/20110827023337/http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705385222/Daniel-Peterson-Terryl-Givens-making-his-mark-in-Mormon-writing.html https://www.google.com/books/edition/By_the_Hand_of_Mormon/cC_RCwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA3&printsec=frontcover https://www.deseret.com/2012/11/15/20509757/scholars-terryl-and-fiona-givens-discuss-life-love-and-their-new-book-the-god-who-weeps/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA7kdkzW09c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yecCget_CNM   Sword of Laman:    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietrich_Bonhoeffer https://www.gotquestions.org/did-Jesus-go-to-hell.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euthyphro_dilemma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-suvkwNYSQo   Email: glassboxpodcast@gmail.com  Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/GlassBoxPod  Patreon page for documentary: https://www.patreon.com/SeerStonedProductions Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/glassboxpodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/GlassBoxPod  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glassboxpodcast/  Merch store: https://www.redbubble.com/people/exmoapparel/shop Or find the merch store by clicking on “Store” here: https://glassboxpodcast.com/index.html One time Paypal donation: bryceblankenagel@gmail.com  Venmo: Shannon-Grover-10
