Episode 31: Five Rules I Break for Fitness   Who says you have to follow the rules to get fit? Hilary Silver unapologetically shreds the fitness handbook and proves you don't need rigid routines to look amazing at 52. Forget arm day, endless cardio, and those boring sit-ups! In this episode, Hilary shares the five fitness rules she proudly ignores (plus the one rule that she never breaks).   Episode Highlights: Break the rules! Fitness isn't one-size-fits-all. Hilary's approach to fitness is proof you can break the rules and still get good results. Start trusting yourself to do what works for you. Cardio? Only if she feels like it. Hilary skips the treadmill grind and only walks or runs when it feels good. Fun fact? Many of Hilary's podcast episode topics come to her on these walks and runs when she's moving her body! Scheduled workouts? Hard pass! Forget those “arm days” and “leg days.” Hilary calls the shots when she hits the gym. She makes sure that she chooses moves that feel right for her body that day. For abs that turn heads, Hilary swears by twisting core-focused movements that sculpt without the six-pack bulk.  Heavy weights? Only sometimes. Lifting heavy isn't a lifestyle for Hilary. She balances strength training with light weights and Tracy Anderson-inspired routines for a toned, feminine look. Rest days are overrated. Moving every day doesn't mean burnout; it means listening to your body and switching it up to keep things interesting. Learn how daily movement—on your terms—can keep your mind sharp, your body strong, and your soul happy.   Episode Breakdown: [00:00] Fitness Confusion [00:42] Why Break the Fitness Rules? [01:35] Blending Brain Science with the Laws of the Universe [01:46] Breaking Rule #1: No Cardio Workouts [03:01] Breaking Rule #2: No Scheduled Workouts [03:43] Breaking Rule #3: No Sit-Ups [04:26] Breaking Rule #4: No Heavy Weights Regularly [06:10] Breaking Rule #5: No Rest Days [08:05] Hilary's Self-Centered Approach to Fitness and Life   Hilary's self-centered philosophy is the foundation of her life; not just her fitness. In this episode, I sit down with Joel Pearson, a professor at the University of New South Wales in Australia where he is a Director of the Future Minds Lab and a leader in the science of intuition and decision-making. This conversation will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about intuition. We often hear that intuition should either be suppressed in decision-making or trusted like some kind of mystical superpower. The reality, as Joel reveals, is far more nuanced—and far more fascinating—than either of those extremes. Joel and his team have developed groundbreaking methods to measure intuition and mental imagery, offering a rare glimpse into how these elusive processes work in our brains. Throughout the episode, he breaks down his five rules for knowing when to trust your intuition and when to ignore it. He explains how intuition is a learned skill, not an innate talent, and how it can be both a powerful tool and a dangerous trap depending on the situation. He also introduces the concept of "mis-intuition," where our gut instincts lead us astray, and shares compelling examples of when intuition works and doesn't. From life-or-death decisions in the military to everyday choices in business, this episode will challenge your assumptions and give you practical insights on making better decisions. This episode is a must-listen if you've ever wondered whether to trust your gut or dismiss it. BONUS: Leading Without Blame, Building Resilient Teams with Tricia Broderick and Diana Larsen In this BONUS episode, leadership experts Tricia Broderick and Diana Larsen explore their latest book, Lead Without Blame, talking about how leaders can create high-performing teams without resorting to blaming. This conversation tackles the key themes from their book, and offers insights on how leaders can foster resilient, learning-focused teams. Understanding "Lead Without Blame" "Leadership isn't about finger-pointing; it's about creating an environment where learning and growth can flourish." Tricia and Diana kick off the conversation by breaking down what it means to lead without blame. They explore the impact of blame in the workplace, particularly how it stifles innovation, and erodes psychological safety. The authors stress the importance of making space for learning and acknowledge that many leaders, even unintentionally, perpetuate a culture of blame. "To lead without blame, focus on building a culture where learning is prioritized over finger-pointing." The Inspiration Behind the Book "Blame has always been a leadership issue, and this book was a way to address it head-on." Tricia and Diana share personal anecdotes that inspired the book. Tricia describes writing the book as therapeutic, reflecting on her past experiences as an executive who lacked the skills to prevent a blame culture. Diana highlights how pervasive blame is in toxic work environments and the urgent need for a shift in leadership approaches to create healthier, more supportive workplaces. "Our goal is to equip leaders with the tools they need to create environments where everyone can thrive without the fear of blame." From Knowledge Work to Learning Work "Learning is the evolution of knowledge work, and it's the foundation of resilient teams." The authors discuss the shift from traditional knowledge work to what they call "learning work." They explain that building resilient teams requires fostering an environment where continuous learning is encouraged and natural. Leaders must embrace the idea that learning is an ongoing process, crucial for adapting to changes like remote work and other modern challenges. "To build resilient teams, leaders must prioritize creating a learning environment where everyone is prepared to adapt and grow." The 4Cs of Learning Leaders "Courage, Compassion, Confidence, and Complexity—these are the pillars of effective leadership in today's world." Tricia and Diana introduce the "4Cs" of Learning Leaders—Courage, Compassion, Confidence, and Complexity. They emphasize that leadership is not just about hierarchical authority but about modeling these qualities at all levels within a team. Leaders must navigate uncertainty and complexity with confidence, showing their teams how to do the same. "True leadership is about embodying the 4Cs—showing courage, compassion, confidence, and understanding complexity in every situation." Leadership Through Learning "Leaders must exemplify the learning process, guiding their teams through growth and change." The authors explore the concept of "Leadership through Learning," where leaders actively engage in and model the learning process. They discuss essential motivators like shared purpose, autonomy, and co-intelligence, which are crucial for fostering a collaborative and innovative team environment. "Leadership through learning means being intentional about creating a space where your team can grow together." The Five Rules for Accelerated Learning In their book, Tricia and Diana outline "Five Rules for Accelerated Learning" that are essential for leaders looking to cultivate high-performing teams. These rules guide leaders in creating environments where learning is continuous, rapid, and deeply integrated into the team's daily work. "Accelerated learning happens when leaders set the right conditions and provide clear, actionable guidance." Managing Conflict with the Escalating Conflict Model "Healthy conflict is a sign of engagement, but it's crucial to recognize when it starts to become destructive." The authors discuss the "Escalating Conflict Model", which helps leaders identify and manage conflict stages within their teams. The model emphasizes recognizing when conflicts move from healthy disagreements to destructive behaviors and provides strategies for keeping conflicts constructive and focused on team goals. "Understanding the stages of conflict helps leaders intervene early and keep team dynamics positive." Maximizing Learning and Adaptation through Retrospectives "Retrospectives are not just about looking back—they're about learning and adapting for the future." Tricia and Diana highlight the importance of retrospectives in team development, emphasizing that these sessions are critical for continuous learning and adaptation. They offer practical advice on how leaders can conduct effective retrospectives that focus on purpose-relevant topics and foster a culture of open, constructive dialogue. "Use retrospectives as a tool to reinforce your team's shared goals and drive continuous improvement." Learn More About the Book The book is Lead Without Blame by Tricia Broderick and Diana Larsen. In this fascinating episode, Dr. Fred interviews his longtime friend Dr. Hal Blatman, a pioneering physician who shares his revolutionary "five rules" that debunk much of what is traditionally taught about the origins of pain. Blatman claims chronic pain actually stems from restrictions in the body's connective fascia that are triggered by inflammatory foods like: • Gluten • Dairy • Sugar   He provides actionable tips for listeners, like accessing his "do not eat" list to try reducing inflammation at home. Blatman details how progressively eliminating these inflammatory foods over decades led to significant improvements in his own struggles with chronic pain conditions like: • Back pain • Migraines • And others   He boldly argues that mainstream medicine's approach has it wrong - suggesting surgery, drugs, and other invasive treatments are often unnecessary. Instead, Blatman advocates for a fundamentally new way of understanding and treating chronic pain: • Directly treating the fascia restrictions through hands-on therapy • Changing one's diet to reduce inflammation   His eye-opening perspective presents potential dietary and lifestyle changes as the keys to addressing the underlying causes, rather than just masking symptoms. It's a must-listen for anyone suffering from stubborn chronic pain conditions.   Links: Winner's Guide to Pain Relief: https://blatmanhealthandwellness.com/product/winners-guide-pain-relief/ Get the 'Do Not Eat List' Starter Guide: https://blatmanhealthandwellness.com/do-not-eat/ YT: https://www.youtube.com/@blatmanhealth  FB: https://www.facebook.com/blatmanhealth/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/dr.halblatman/ Website: DrB@BlatmanHealthAndWellness.com   Time stamps: 00:00 Introduction to The Healthy Healer 00:30 Meet Dr. Hal Blatman 00:38 Reconnecting with an Old Friend 02:24 Understanding Pain and Its Misconceptions 06:49 The Five Rules of Pain 10:46 Practical Advice for Pain Relief 23:56 Hal Blatman's Journey and Insights 29:57 Final Thoughts and Farewell

This podcast breaks down how to feed horses into five simple rules based on what the food does, good and bad, within the horse. It is a short discussion that avoids a deep dive into science. Instead, it is a to-the-point instruction set for those wondering why their horses are falling apart in front of their eyes and what they can do to help the horse survive. There are no gimmicks or supplements. If your horse is sick or lame, there is a strong chance it has been caused by the food they eat. I tell you in the first part my five rules for feeding horses. After this, if you want to understand why I made these rules, I lightly go into the science. Future podcasts will go deeper into details to strengthen your ability to share what works for your horses with those still feeding the foods that make them unsound, unhealthy, or both. ********** TheHorsesAdvocate.com is a website for learning about horses, horse barns, and farms. A lot of the behavioral sciences can feel intimidating. However, it doesn't have to be. The Five Rules Podcast Series is our attempt at giving you an easy entry point into the complex and messy world of Behavioral Science. This podcast is full of bad advice. If you do follow the five rules we present, we guarantee you will fail. We realize this might be different than our usual Five Rules episode content. However, we think that presenting the way to fail might be the way to help you succeed. (How's that for a different kettle of fish?) For example, if you want to fail, we have the rules that will help you do it. They include doing any or all of the following: Not understanding the marketplace.  Ignoring customer feedback.  Failing to adapt to change.  Not being authentic.  Overlooking diversity and inclusion.  In this episode, we explore why our five rules, otherwise known as what not to do in business, lead to failure for many brands you know, and in some cases, remember from before they crashed and burned. We share what we have learned by watching brands make silly mistakes (and hope none of you will make the same ones.) Key Ideas to Improve your Customer Experience The critical thing to remember here is that we don't want you to do these things. Instead, we encourage you to learn from these mistakes. So, if anything, we are telling you to break these five rules instead of following them.  Here are some other key moments in the discussion: 04:07  We kick it off by explaining how if you don't understand the marketplace, you are sure to blow it with them, hastening your descent into failure.  10:53  We abandon all pretense of being organized, and share all five rules at once and then fit our examples under the various rules.  12:08   We discuss business guru Charles Handy's S-curve from The Empty Raincoat about how things ebb and flow in performance, and when is the best time to change.  19:50  Colin relates the five rules back to an article he read, “15 Famous Brands Who Failed to Innovate,” and how hubris plays a role.  23:46  Ryan explains how Victoria Secret might have fared better over time if they had more diversity and inclusion built into their leadership.  _________________________________________________________________ Did you know we have a YouTube Channel too? Check it out here.
