Maar ondanks dat: een diversiteitseis."Dit zijn de woorden van Eppo Bruins, de voormalige cultuurwoordvoerder van de Christenunie, die nu door de extreem-rechtse en inmiddels ongehoorde coalitie wordt voorgedragen als Minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap. Het tweetje uit januari viel niemand op, Bruins was nog een weinig uitgesproken cultuurwoordvoerder van een partij die bitter weinig bijdroeg aan de debatten over het onderwerp.   Uitgesprokener is Bruins de laatste tijd over het conflict in Gaza en de studentenprotesten op Nederlandse universiteiten. Onlangs keurde hij nog een actie van de KABK af: Bruins past qua opvattingen goed bij de uiterst rechtse signatuur van het beoogde Kabinet-Schoof, maar de kans dat de NSC'er een zware bezuiniging op de kunsten zal doorvoeren lijkt klein. Er klopt ook een Europees hart in de man, blijkt: We houden het in de gaten de komende tijd. Dat in de formatie van de afgelopen maanden koehandel (sic) heeft geregeerd is duidelijk. Wilders heeft zijn harde lijn op onder meer cultuur en media moeten inleveren, en krijgt daar een uitgesproken raciste op Ontwikkelingshulp voor terug. Inmiddels is ook de wegens wapenbezit veroordeelde beoogd minister Immigratie vervangen door omvolkingstheoretica en van fraude verdachte Marjolein Faber. Had iemand dit nog maar een jaar geleden voorspeld, hadden we die collectief voor gek verklaard. Maar we gaan door!En ondertussen is dus het Holland Festival in full swing, soms letterlijk. Met een jonger en diverser publiek dan eerdere edities. En veel frisse voorstellingen. Lees hier wat ik meemaakte. "Ik zat zaterdag 8 juni een kleine twee uur met een glimlach van oor tot oor op rij zes van het Amsterdamse Muziekgebouw. Festivalbezoekers naast en voor mij waren vooral boos, de rijen achterin  juichten uitgelaten. Vanaf de eerste rij van het balkon zag Prinses Beatrix (dit keer zonder alle koninklijke poespas) dat het goed was. Tot en met de razend ingewikkelde, stampende toegift": Muziek met ballen voor Beatrix op Holland Festival"Met Dans la Mesure de l'Impossible onderneemt Rodrigues een poging om de gruwelijke realiteit van oorlog en verwoesting tot ons door te laten dringen. In 2022, nog voor de Russen hun verwoesting van Oekraïne begonnen, en lang voordat we niet meer ver hoefden te klikken om ons al doomscrollend te laten overweldigen door de menselijke ramp in Gaza, interviewde Rodrigues samen met zijn acteurs een dertigtal hulpverleners van het Rode Kruis en Artsen zonder Grenzen." Stervende drummer zegt alles in Dans la Mesure de l'Impossible van Tiago Rodrigues in het Holland Festival"Jatahy, dit jaar ‘associate artist' van het Holland Festival, is een meester in het spelen met fantasie en werkelijkheid. Ze zet voor haar theater alle middelen in, van live muziek en dans tot film. In ‘Despois do Silencio' (Na de stilte) vormen in de Braziliaanse Bahia-regio opgenomen filmbeelden niet alleen een kleurrijke en betekenisverhogende achtergrond, ze zijn uiteindelijk ook de speelplek. Dat gebeurt wanneer ze een podiumbreed, precies op acteursformaat geprojecteerd dorpsfeest tonen, waar de live acteurs in het Amsterdamse theater Frascati naadloos in opgaan." Met Despois do Silencio dwingt Christiane Jatahy diep respect af op het Holland Festival.Dat was het voor deze week. Vergeet niet om lid te worden, als je dat nog niet was. Of een donatie te doen.Tot de volgende!Wijbrand SchaapPS: Hammarskjöld en operaOp het jubileumfestival van de Akademie van Kunsten gaat het eindelijk weer eens over hoe kunst en wetenschap onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Dat vond ons Konijn van Olland (Lodewijk Napoleon) al, toen hij de KNAW begin negentiende eeuw oprichtte. Er is nu een festival om te vieren dat na een scheiding door steile Nederlandse calvinisten Kunsten en Wetenschap nu alweer tien jaar met elkaar samenwonen. Dat moet een huwelijk worden, zo ervoer ik. Neem Anthony Heidweiller, die zijn bewondering voor Oscar Hammarskjöld uitte in een spreekbeurt en een lied. Met zijn diepe bariton kropen opeens de rillingen over ieders rug in de statige rode zaal van het voormalige Rijksmuseum, nu vrij toegankelijk. Dat alleen al is wat kunst aan wetenschap toe te voegen heeft. Akademie van Kunsten festival - KNAWBertolt Brecht en contextDankzij DDR-archieven gingen we er lang van uit dat theatervernieuwer Bertolt Brecht een enorme verzameling plaatjes had opgebouwd, die vervolgens allemaal keurig na zijn dood zijn gecatalogiseerd.

The topic or guiding question will be the political power of images. How do they shape not only our understanding, but also our opinion of the world? Each of the episodes welcomes a guest speaker that will be in conversation with Elisa Medde, Editor in Chief of Foam Magazine. Paris Photo will be running from the 10th until the 13th of November. Federica Chiocchetti is a writer, curator, editor, and recently appointed director of the Musée du Locle in Switzerland. Through her platform Photocaptionist she collaborates with international museums (Jeu de Paume, V&A, Kunsthalle Budapest), private collections (David Solo, Archive of Modern Conflict) festivals and fairs (Jaipur Photo, T3 Tokyo Photo Festival, Paris Photo), publishers (Spector Books, Aperture, Foam), bookstores (La Fabrica, Shakespeare and Company) and universities (University of Oxford, ECAL), among others. She holds a PhD in ‘Photo-Texts', from London's University of Westminster, which she is transforming into a touring exhibition, book and educational project, the Word and Image Workshop. She has won a number of residencies (Fondation Michalski, Cité internationale des arts), awards (Kraszna-Krausz Best Photography Book, Vienna Photo Book Dummy) and in 2016 she was included among the ‘16 female curators shaking things up' by Artnet. Her research on women in photography was presented in multiple forms by L'Uomo Vogue, Fotomuseum Winterthur, 10x10 Photobooks, London Art Fair and The Photographers' Gallery. Elisa Medde edits, curates and writes about photography and visual culture. With a background in Art History, Iconology and Photographic Studies, her research reflects on the relationship between image, communication and power structures. She has been nominator for a number of prizes and chaired various juries. The interests of Rob Hornstra (b. The Netherlands, 1975) lay beyond the intellectual bubble and his work is raw, honest and daring. After teaching for several years at the KABK, Rob decided to fully focus on his long-term photography project The Europeans.

Afra Eisma (1993) studeerde aan Central Saint Martin's in Londen en de KABK in Den Haag, waar ze in 2017 afstudeerde. Voor het creëren van haar sculpturen en installaties gebruikt ze ambachtelijke materialen en technieken, zoals textiel en keramiek. Ze schept met haar beelden een kleurrijke, prikkelende fantasiewereld, waarin iedereen zich thuis voelt en een aanknopingspunt vindt om zijn of haar eigen verhaal te maken. We are honoured to announce that we will be interviewing Lucette ter Borg and Carola Houtekamer. Two renowned investigative journalists for the NRC who wrote the article on Julian Andeweg that is the inspiration for this interview.Besides being an award-winning novelist, Lucette ter Borg is also a well-known art critic writing mainly on the Dutch art scene. She has recently also published work on the lack of diversity within Dutch art institutions. Carola Houtekamer has worked as an editor on manufacturing, construction and tech for the NRC. And she has recently written investigative pieces on datacentres in the Wieringermeerpolder and the impact of windmills.The article we will be discussing is on the troubling case of Dutch artist Julian Andeweg. A three-month-long investigation by ter Borg and Houtekamer uncovered a trial of accusations of rape, harassment, violence and theft dating back to Andeweg's time at the art school KABK. The incompetence in dealing with these allegations of Dutch art institutions shocked many, but also started a bigger #metoo movement within the Dutch art scene. The Instagram account @calloutdutchartinstitutions was created and gained around 10.000 followers in only a few days. The account featured disturbing experiences of sexual harassment, racism, sexism and the inadequacy of the institutions in dealing with these allegations. This showed that the case of Julian Andeweg was not just an isolated incident but was an indication of a larger problem within the Dutch art world. The problem is a rather non-progressive and unprofessional culture within Dutch art schools, galleries, museums and more. Discussions on the lack of diversity and representation within the Dutch art scene have also gained attraction following the publication of this article.We will be discussing all of this and more during our hour-long interview with Lucette ter Borg and Carola Houtekamer.

Marwan Bassiouni (b. Switserland, 1985) is a photographer and artist who graduated from the KABK in 2018 with the project ‘New Dutch Views', in which he suggests a different view of looking at Islam in the West.

Directamente desde el estudio de Type-Ø-Tones transmitimos un nuevo capítulo de PodCasType. En esta ocasión, tuvimos el honor de conversar con dos grandes diseñadores de fuentes: Laura Meseguer @laurameseguer y Josema Urós @josema_reiet quienes conforman el colectivo tipográfico Type-Ø-Tones @typeotones una de las primeras fundiciones españolas que tuvo sus inicios a fines de los '80, inicios de los '90, de manera espontánea. En un inicio el colectivo estuvo conformado por Enric Jardí, Joan Barjau y Josema Urós, y luego en el año 1992 Laura Meseguer se incorpora en cuando conoce el mundo de la tipografía digital de la mano de Josema. Ambos iniciados en tipografía de manera análoga en primera instancia. Laura realizó el Master Type and Media de la KABK, y actualmente con Josema se enfocan en la producción de fuentes digitales y la docencia en diversas universidades de Barcelona. Conversamos sobre sus intereses, sobre conceptos fundamentales, sobre el rol de la mujer en la tipografía, como así también de su visión mundial acerca de la tipografía, de la originalidad y del amor a la letra. . Kimya Gandhi is a type designer from Mumbai with a passionate interest in Indic type design. She is an alumnus of National institute of Fashion Technology and Industrial Design Centre, IIT Mumbai. She got her professional start interning at Linotype in 2010. Over the next few years she freelanced for several type foundries catering to their multi-script requirements. In 2015, she became a partner at Mota Italic and now focuses on Indic and Latin designs for retail and custom corporate projects. On this episode, we talk about Kimya’s journey as a designer and about some of her key type design projects. Job Wouters aka Letman is a skilled letterer and mural painter, but not only that. He studied graphic design at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and typography at the KABK in The Hague, where he now also teaches. He talked to us about his smoking habit, his first typographic memory and how he started as a graphic designer. Today his work balances between art, illustration, typography and design. As an artist he follows his own paths based on his intuition. He talks about the exhibition he was part of at Marres in Maastricht, and his dream project. Born in England, Richard Hollis has been a freelance graphic designer since 1958. He has worked as a printer, art editor, production manager, writer, teacher and lecturer. Hollis taught at various London art schools, as well as co-founded, with Norman Potter, the Graphic Design Department at the West of England College of Art in Bristol in 1964. His book design includes John Berger’s ‘Ways of Seeing’, and a large body of work for the Whitechapel Art Gallery. He has also made a significant contribution to the history of graphic design in through his books including ‘Graphic Design: A Concise History’. In the interview with Richard Hollis we talk about his personal values. And how your own values are expressed through the way you work and the way you behave towards the people you’re working with or working for. Richard explains how he hardly ever changes typefaces. He always uses the same typefaces in making catalogues and books. We wonder, apart from the kind of job or the topics that he’s designing for, if his political views can be seen in his design work. We also talk about his fascination for Swiss Graphic Design and he explains why he has written a book about the topic: ‘Swiss Graphic Design: The Origins and Growth of an International Style’. We end the interview with how a painting of two tortoises, that Richard has seen at the Mauritshuis, is related to writing. Frederik Berlaen is a multi-talented Belgian type designer, programmer and teacher, who just fell in love with scripting while attending the postgraduate Type & Media course at the KABK in The Hague. He didn’t graduate with a typeface, but an application that eventually set the foundation for his recently released typescripting program, Robofont. We ask him what drove him to create his own tools. He tells us how he misses drawing, how scripting can save a designer in several ways and even makes a confession on Typeradio about his thoughts on sharing.
