Brecht van Hulten in gesprek met fotograaf Stephan Vanfleteren. De Belgische Vanfleteren is één van de meest gewaardeerde fotografen van dit moment en is door het Mauritshuis gevraagd een nieuwe serie foto's te maken. Deze zijn nu te zien in de tentoonstelling Pentimenti – Stephan Vanfleteren tussen de Meesters. De zestien foto's, waarvan vijftien nieuwe, zijn geïnspireerd op 17de-eeuwse schilderijen uit de museumcollectie en worden getoond tussen de meesterwerken.  Stephan Vanfleteren was eerder betrokken bij het Mauritshuis tijdens de jubileumtentoonstelling FLASH | BACK (2022). De indrukwekkende foto die hij destijds maakte had een directe link met De anatomische les van dr Nicolaes Tulp van Rembrandt (1632) en zal ook nu weer te zien zijn. Pentimenti is ook de titel van het brievenboek dat uitkomt bij deze tentoonstelling, geschreven door Stephan Vanfleteren en Martine Gosselink.

After opening a major building project in May last year and announcing the details of another in September, which is due to open in the early 2030s, the National Gallery in London has revealed, quite unexpectedly, that it has to make serious cuts, including to its staff, in the face of a deficit that could rise to £8.2m in the coming year. Martin Bailey, The Art Newspaper's special correspondent in London, tells us more. Dit keer een bijzondere aflevering van Uniek Sporten Vandaag vanuit het Mauritshuis in Den Haag. Op Prinsjesdag gaat de aandacht traditiegetrouw uit naar de Troonrede en de Miljoenennota. Maar sport en bewegen krijgen daarin vaak slechts een bescheiden rol. Terwijl we weten dat sport cruciaal is voor gezondheid, welzijn en participatie. Hoe maken we sport een structureel onderdeel van ons beleid, onze zorg en onze samenleving? Maatschappelijke Organisaties in de Sport (MOS) organiseerde daarom in samenwerking met Gemeente Den Haag en de Esther Vergeer Foundation de Sportieve Troonrede. Esther Vergeer deelde haar persoonlijke visie op de rol van sport en bewegen, met bijzondere aandacht voor de zorg. Als meervoudig paralympisch kampioen en oprichter van de Esther Vergeer Foundation weet zij als geen ander hoe essentieel sport is voor herstel, gezondheid en mentaal welzijn. Daarnaast was er ook een panel van experts uit het sociaal domein en de zorg, met Lex Staal (directeur-bestuurder Sociaal Werk Nederland) en Iris de Vries (voorzitter Vereniging Arts en Leefstijl) en Arno Roest (Kindercardioloog en nauw betrokken bij de opzet van het Esther Vergeer Sportpoli in het Willem-Alexander Kinderziekenhuis). Samen reflecteerden zij op de beleidsplannen voor het komende jaar, met specifieke aandacht voor hoe kansengelijkheid in sport- en beweegdeelname kan worden vergroot in beleid en praktijk. Robert Denneman en Fonds Gehandicaptensport directeur Nike Boor waren er live bij met deze bijzondere aflevering van Uniek Sporten Vandaag. Naast het integraal uitzenden van deze sessies, blikten zij na afloop terug op het geheel met een aantal van de aanwezigen. In de studio schoven aan wethouders Hilbert Bredemeijer van Den Haag, Eva Oosters van Utrecht en Maes van Lanschot van Eindhoven; olympisch kampioenen volleybal Peter Blangé en Bas van de Goor; en uitdrager van de Sportieve Troonrede Esther Vergeer en Ruben Buijserd, directeur van de MOS.

After sending its most famous work to be featured in Amsterdam's blockbuster 2023 exhibition of nearly every work by Johannes Vermeer, the Mauritshuis museum found itself with a blank space where the iconic Girl with a Pearl Earring had been displayed. The Hague-based institution turned to more than 2,700 artists, from Texas to Ukraine, from age 7 to 70, who created their own interpretations of the 17th-century masterpiece. A selection of 60 works using materials ranging from orange peels to bottle caps to sweatshirts was exhibited in the museum while the painting was on loan 40 miles (64 kilometers) to the north. "The submissions continue to come, it will never end with her," Martine Gosselink, director of the Mauritshuis museum, told The Associated Press, pointing to the ongoing popularity of works featuring the mystery girl. A 2020 investigation into the painting using a battery of modern imaging techniques uncovered details about Vermeer's methods and the makeup of his pigments, but not the young woman's identity. Check out these examples of life-changing images brought to you by prints in books!   In s2e31 of Platemark's History of Prints series, Tru and Ann continue their discussion of the Enlightenment. This time they look at several publications that put forward new discoveries about human anatomy: William Hunter's The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus, Bernhard Siegfried Albinus' Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani, and Jacques Fabien Gautier d'Agoty's Myologie complette en couleur et grandeur naturelle. They conclude with Denis Diderot's Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, a 17-volume tome that attempted to define and codify all of human knowledge.   At the end of the episode, Ann and Tru wax philosophical about how incredible this blossoming of human knowledge is, and how talking about it makes each of them think about our place as humans on the planet. In this special episode, we are in Amsterdam for one of the shows of the year: Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum. As an unprecedented 28 of the 37 surviving Vermeer paintings are gathered in the Dutch capital, Ben Luke talks to several people involved in the project: Gregor Weber, one of the exhibition's curators, tells us about his new biography that reveals the depth of influence of the Jesuits and Catholicism on the artist. In the exhibition itself, we talk to Pieter Roelofs, Weber's co-curator; Ige Verslype, a conservator who led an extensive research project on Vermeer paintings in the Rijksmuseum, Mauritshuis and Frick collections; and Taco Dibbits, the Rijksmuseum's director. Plus, we bump into the artist Alvaro Barrington in the exhibition and he tells us what he makes of Vermeer as an artist working today. In this episode's Work of the Week, we explore a debate around the attribution of a painting: Betsy Wieseman, Curator and Head of the Department of Northern European Paintings at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) in Washington DC, discusses Girl with a Flute (around 1669-75).
