I get her take on the Embroidery as Art debate and we cover a lot of random ground, as I had so many questions that I wanted to ask her. It was a complete pleasure talking with Susan, who has been very supportive of my journey as MrXStitch and I hope that you enjoy the show.Timestamps: 00:00:00 - Introduction00:02:07 - The Story of the Royal School of Needlework00:12:01 - Preserving Embroidery Stitches: The RSN Stitch Bank00:32:17 - Recognising Embroidery as an Art Form00:36:50 - The Resurgence of Embroidery in a Digital Age00:40:29 - The Changing Perception of Crafts Over Time00:48:00 - Susan's Cultural Touchpoints00:56:00 - An interesting fact not many people know about Dr Susan Kay-WilliamsLinks:Website: Royal School of NeedleworkInstagram: royalneedleworkIntro music is This Was Fun by Gavin Luke via Epidemic Sound.About NeedleXChange:NeedleXChange is a conversation podcast with embroidery and textile artists, exploring their process and practice.Hosted by Jamie "Mr X Stitch" Chalmers, it is an in-depth showcase of the best needlework artists on the planet.Visit the NeedleXChange website: https://www.needl.exchange/Sign up for the NeedleXChange Newsletter here: https://bit.ly/NeedleXChangeIf you want embroidery inspiration and regular doses of textile art, visit the Mr X Stitch site here: https://www.mrxstitch.comIf you're looking for modern cross stitch designs, then XStitch is the magazine you need!Subscribe to XStitch Magazine here: https://xstitchmag.com/modern-cross-stitch-magazine/And follow Mr X Stitch on all the usual social media channels!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MrXStitchTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/MrXStitchInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/MrXStitchPinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/mrxstitch/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mrjamiechalmers Hosted on Acast. Jeff Mayo, Director of Schools of Arlington Community Schools, Kay Williams, Arlington Board Member, and Dr. Dale Viox, Arlington Board Chair, discuss the importance of teacher appreciation within its schools and how these efforts have paid off - Arlington Community Schools has being designated as the #1 Top Workplace in the Memphis-Metro region. Show Notes For more information as to Arlington Community Schools, click here to access their website. Below are some facts about the school district: ACS was formed in 2014, with them opening their doors in August of the same year. Now, in their 9th year as a school district, ACS has about 4,800 students in four schools: two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. ACS has approximately 535 employees. Examples of how ACS showes teacher appreciation and support are as follows: Quarterly celebrations – lunches provided by the district every nine weeks; PLUS Experience – recognizes employees for going above and beyond their duties; Employee spotlight – every month, one employee from each school is chosen by administrators to be highlighted in the district newsletter and on social media; Birthday message – personalized birthday message sent from the Superintendent; Monday motivation – the Superintendent sends motivational message to employees every Monday to help kick off the week; and Strategic Plan incentive giveaway – employees are encouraged to post on social media how they are implementing the new strategic plan in their classroom, with a winner selected from each school.
Part of the Royal School of Needlework's collection is in tatters . . . by design. The collection includes some fine examples of stitching techniques, but what makes the archive more interesting are the pieces where fraying has revealed something about the stitching of a particular piece. All of the pieces support the school's mission: to preserve traditional needlework techniques and educate students around the world in stitching well. Whether to future needlework tutors, undergraduates, or stitchers around the world, the RSN teaches foundations in needlework that emphasize skilled craftsmanship as well as self-expression. As Chief Executive of the Royal School of Needlework, Dr. Susan Kay-Williams oversees an institution that teaches hobbyist needleworkers around the world, offers a BA degree in needlework, creates textiles for royal occasions, and above all works to preserve the techniques of stitching for future generations. One of the school's major initiatives has been the RSN Stitch Bank (https://www.rsnstitchbank.org/), a free online database that records embroidery stitches from around the world. To prevent needlework stitches from being lost over time, the stitch bank provides written instructions, videos, photos, and illustrations for 150 stitches and counting. As Dr. Kay-Williams remarks, the RSN may be a small organization, but it does not have small ambitions. This is a duet by Michele Fry, reading Ingersoll's essay, and Kay Williams, an authentic Scotsman, reading Burns' poetry. Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, the National Bard, Bard of Ayrshire, the Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. Kay Williams always had an inclination to be a professional actress, so, with stars in her eyes, she moved to New York City right after college graduation (she was a theater major). She lived in a rent-controlled apartment with no heat, and lots of rodents, too busy earning money to act (her dad had saved her letters from that time so she recently took a fresh look at those hair-raising and now hilarious adventures). After 9 months in the Big Apple, Kay slunk back to Ohio, to a safer life, teaching, directing, acting in community theater, and reviewing films and plays. Her dream didn’t die. She moved to San Francisco, where she played many leading roles until several theaters went bankrupt (an occupational hazard, she discovered). Acting roles dried up just after she earned her Equity union card. She left the Bay Area for the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Two years later that theater was too broke to renew her contract. There was only one place left to go, New York City. It still scared her, but this time, she vowed to be victorious. Kay acted in a number of new off-Broadway plays, finding it more fun than doing a show that had been successfully produced and “set in stone.” In between acting jobs, she worked as an office temp until she landed a perfect job, “Gal Friday” to an award-winning independent filmmaker, which not only gave her flexible hours to audition, but also an education about film writing, directing, and producing. She took films she’d helped produce to the Cannes Film Festival and to the Leningrad International Documentary Festival (where Kay and Eileen’s second thriller, The Matryoshka Murders, begins). Kay’s eventual move to an apartment in New York’s crime-ridden Hell’s Kitchen became one of the catalysts for Butcher of Dreams, Kay and Eileen’s first thriller (about the theater, of course). Fearful of spending her retirement as a bag lady begging for money outside Actors Equity, Kay took a “real” job. A physician she’d worked for as a temp asked her to join him as he set up a Primary Care Residency Track at NYU Medical Center. She did and learned a great deal about good doctoring and academic medicine (and the politics of academe–another book, perhaps). The NYU job was too demanding to take time off to audition so she and Eileen teamed up to write, a move they had been contemplating for several years. Kay discovered that she didn’t miss acting all that much. With fiction writing, she had total control and could play all the characters! Kay and Eileen found they jelled as a writing team. To learn more about Kay Williams and her book visit her website. Topics of conversation: Her adventures in NYC and San Francisco in the 60s Being a Gypsy Actor Working as a “Gal-Friday” for independent film writer, producer, director, Jack O’Connell Her trip to Russia to the Leningrad International Documentary Festival How she and her sister finished writing their dad’s romance novel
