I have bipolar disorder, two teenaged daughters and a long-term relationship with the Arts that is borderline abusive on both sides. Over the course of human history, there have been countless tomes composed on the subject of mental health, and an equally daunting number on the joys and perils of raising children. If you factor in the mysterious nature of twins and the long-term ramifications of being raised in a cult, however, then it's basically this one and Harry Potter. If it helps, our story is shorter and contains fewer owls. Bisection is the story of one man, two children and bipolar disorder. Equal parts comedy, tragedy, absurdity and philosophy, it is a unique look at mental health, parenting and everything in between.

A Suffolk farmer who invested in growing ducks but got hit by bird flu, is trying to switch to chickens instead but says his plan is being jeopardized because of labour shortages at the Environment Agency. Tom McVeigh from Kenton Hall lost 95,000 ducks to avian flu. He now wants to rear broilers but needs the Environment Agency to sign off the change of use. However, he says there are big delays to the paper work and it could stop the project going ahead. DEFRA Secretary Terese Coffey is in America and will be speaking at the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture Winter Conference. It's the first time a foreign minister has addressed the gathering. Dr Coffey is expected to talk about forging a sustainable future and US/UK co-operation. All week we're getting a very different perspective on farming and finding out how space research and exploration could impact agriculture now, and in the future. What do astronauts eat for lunch? Well if it's been pouches of pre-prepared meals they might like a change. How about steak? A company called Aleph Farms based in Israel has made lab-grown meat in space. Conservationists say offshore windfarms in the North Sea need to reduce the impact they're having on seabirds. The warning comes as the latest windfarm, Hornsea 4, has been delayed, following concerns about the Kittiwake – an endangered species of gull. Hornsea 4's developers say they're working hard to ensure green energy and seabird populations can co-exist. Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney
In this week's episode I'm joined by Kenton Hall as we listen to songs from his former band - ist - and his solo project Kenton Hall & The Necessary Measures. We talk about the highs and lows of being a touring musician, filmmaker and human being. We explore songwriting; processing grief; bipolar; hitting rock bottom and finding a way through. Oh, and how the right song can save someone's life one night - so it's worth putting the effort in. Art matters. Now living and working without the highs, Kenton challenges the myth of the necessarily tormented creative genius and talks about how he's finding a sense of balance.Songs featured in this episode:The Boy's Not Right: https://istianity.bandcamp.com/track/the-boys-not-rightFom Toothpick Bridge, by istKenton Hall John McCourt Brett Richardson Flash Produced and Engineered by Jay Burnett ****Apologia: https://istianity.bandcamp.com/track/apologiaFrom King Martha, by istKenton Hall - Guitars, Keyboards, Vocals John McCourt - Bass, Vocals Flash - Drums, Vocals Brett Richardson - Bassoon, Conductor, String Arrangements, Vocals Jack Bomb - Guitar, Vocals Paul Swannell - Piano, Organ Kevin Hewick - Vocals Gaz Birtles - Sax John Barrow - Sax Drew Stansall - Sax Jon Read - Trumpet James Lindsay - Trombone Anna Jordan - Piano, Organ The Filthmongers' Choir - Vocals Na'im Cortazzi - Vocals Liam Dullaghan - Guitar, Vocals Sophia Marshall - Vocals Sarah Louise Collins - Clarinet Jody Moore - French Horn Strung Out Sisters - String Trio Howard Smith - Lap Steel***Careful How You Go: https://kentonhallthenecessarymeasures.bandcamp.com/track/careful-how-you-goBy Kenton Hall & The Necessary MeasuresKenton Hall - Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Glockenspiel, Percussion, Digital ErhuScarlet Hall - Backing Vocals John McCourt - Bass Brett Richardson - Guitars, Production, Kenton-fixing Alan Jenkins - Organ, Backing Vocals Chris Ilett - Late night advice and additional vocal arrangementsSong produced by Brett Richardson and Kenton Hall Hear more from Kenton Hall:Twitter: https://twitter.com/kentonhallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/kentonhallauthor Blog: https://kentonhall.wordpress.com Bisection - A more or less accurate account of bipolar parenting and twin wrangling: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bisection-accurate-account-parenting-wrangling/dp/1913256065 A Dozen Summers: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3533254/ Kenton Hall & The Necessary Measures: https://kentonhallthenecessarymeasures.bandcamp.com/Find out more about Rai:Website: https://www.behindthelabel.co.uk

Whatever your impression is of Bipolar Disorder, today's guest, Kenton Hall, will disrupt it. We travel to the UK to chat with him about his new book and his life. His book, Bisection: A More or Less Accurate Account of Bipolar Parenting and Twin Wrangling, has been critically acclaimed. He writes that though there have been countless tomes on mental health and raising children, only his and Harry Potter have similar themes, and his story is shorter and contains fewer owls. His reason for writing it is not to give the reader self-help, and not only to entertain, but to help people to understand mental illness and to offer hope for others living with Bipolar Disorder. He gives an unflinching account of his life, from boyhood in Canada with a father eventually diagnosed as Manic-Depressive and being made to live in a cult, to his penniless flight to the UK, where his talents as an author, actor, musician, director and parent blossomed, as well as his Bipolar Disorder.
