Y... en el contorno cuadrado del parque, los caballitos, las voladoras, la Chicago, el gusano, los carros locos y la ola giratoria... hacían de aquel lugar un pequeño país de mentira. »Comimos chucherías, bebimos frescos, nos subimos a la ola giratoria... y...  después abordamos la Chicago. ¡Allí fue el drama! »Mi prima y su amado se [apretujaron] el uno contra la otra, y a mí me pusieron en el extremo del reducido asiento, sin más apoyo y socorro que el pequeño barrote de madera que servía de seguridad y sostén. »Al principio todo iba en calma. Los asientos subían y bajaban, y uno podía ver el panorama que crecía con amplitud en la ascensión y luego se iba reduciendo en el descenso. De pronto, la velocidad del aparato [aumentó] y lo que en un principio para mí fue gusto, se convirtió luego en un horror inmanejable. Las vueltas se sucedían una tras otra con vértigo, los asientos se bamboleaban, y la gente, entusiasmada o aterrorizada, daba alaridos.... Yo no paraba de gritar, a galillo abierto: »—¡¡Pareeen, señores, pareeeeennn!! Y trataba de aferrarme a la prima y a su caballero; pero ellos, indiferentes a la velocidad y a mi horror, permanecían atrapados en un prolongadísimo beso que sólo interrumpían para tomar aliento. Al final del martirio, me bajé pálido, sudoroso, mareado, con fiebre. Cuando... la prima vio mi lamentable condición, se afligió. »—No le vayas a decir a mamaíta Tulita que te subimos a la Chicago, oís. Yo le voy a decir que fue un fresco de ensalada el que se te cayó en la ropa. Te vamos a dar peseta... »Los miré con malevolencia. »—¡Un colón...! —exigí. »Mi prima se le quedó viendo al amado; y el escuálido caballero no tuvo más remedio que sacar un billete de a uno que, para arreciar mi desquite, exigí que fuera de los nuevecitos.»1 Esta simpática anécdota que nos cuenta el escritor salvadoreño Francisco Andrés Escobar en su obra titulada El país de donde vengo nos recuerda lo que suele suceder cuando desobedecemos órdenes superiores y nos empeñamos en salirnos con la nuestra. En realidad, aquella prima del autor no hizo más que seguir el ejemplo de nuestros primeros padres, quienes optaron por desobedecer las órdenes explícitas que les había dado Dios. Pero Adán y Eva, a diferencia de la prima y su novio, sufrieron las consecuencias, incluso el destierro del jardín del Edén, que era mucho más atractivo que un parque de diversiones o una feria.2 Más vale que obedezcamos los mandamientos de Dios y evitemos así merecer tales consecuencias, no sea que en el día del juicio nos veamos en la lamentable condición de ser desterrados del paraíso celestial, que es aún más atractivo que el jardín del Edén. «Muchas cosas sucedieron durante la Campaña de 1948.... Durante el ataque aéreo a San Isidro...., olvidando el almuerzo y el peligro, nuestros soldados tiraban a los aviones, en serio. Tiraban con rifles Mauser, pero no alcanzaban la altura de los atacantes, que se jugaban la vida constantemente, un poquito más arriba de la balacera. »La altura era una de las causas de la mala puntería de los aviadores. Y las bombas se les iban gastando en vano, después del vuelo desde San José hasta San Isidro, que no era corto para aquellas naves pequeñas. »Los pilotos necesitaban bajar más, aun aumentando el peligro de que nuestra riflería los alcanzara. Y nosotros necesitábamos que bajaran un poquito, para poder pegarles, aunque con eso mejoraran ellos su puntería, y [fuera mayor] nuestro riesgo. »Pronto imaginamos una manera de hacer bajar los aviones y ponerlos a nuestro alcance. Ordenamos parar el fuego de los Mauser, y sigilosamente subimos una ametralladora de trípode al árbol más alto, amarrándola, junto con el operador, con pedazos de mecate, a las ramas de la copa. La máquina de calibre 30 tenía más alcance que los rifles, y disparaba más tiros. Además tendría... su blanco más cerca, más bajito. »¡Dicho y hecho! »“¡Paren el fuego! ¡Paren el fuego!” hubo que gritar muchas veces. Pero un ejército de patriotas voluntarios no suele ser muy disciplinado. Y... una de las órdenes más difíciles de acatar es la de parar el fuego, cuando ya la gente ha entrado en calor.... »... El problema se complicó... porque, cuando yo ordenaba que pararan el fuego, un soldado nuestro bien escondido no sé dónde, gritaba: “¡Denles [duro], muchachos! Cuantas más bombas de esas caen, ¡más‑se‑goza!” »Por fin... a las avionetas se les acabaron las bombas, y se tuvieron que ir de regreso a San José sin hacernos ni un rasguño. Misión cumplida, misión perdida. »Tocaron las cornetas al son de “terminó el peligro”. Muchos de nuestros hombres que estaban tirados boca abajo en las zanjas preparadas [de antemano] se incorporaron, y casi fue innecesario dar la orden de almuerzo. »Pero entonces me buscó en carrera doña Andrea Venegas, la heroica Jefe de Cocina,... con una noticia peor que la venida de los aviones enemigos. ¡Por el momento no había almuerzo! »“Cuando usted ordenó tantas veces que apagáramos el fuego y que apagáramos el fuego, le echamos baldes de agua a los fogones.”»1 Así nacen las palabras y los cuentos es el título que le puso el popular ex presidente de Costa Rica José Figueres a la pequeña obra suya de la que procede esta simpática anécdota histórica, escrita en 1977. Y así como en 1948 en San Isidro, Costa Rica, doña Andrea apagó el fuego de los fogones debido a que entendió mal lo que su jefe militar quería que hiciera, también hay quienes actualmente apagan el fuego del Espíritu Santo a causa de que entienden mal la voluntad de Dios, su Jefe espiritual. The now-infamous (somewhat) personal Zoom Q&A state senator Elena Parent (D) and one of her constituents - Lena Kotler - got a lot of attention because of but a few minutes of the dialogue. Like most people, I heard it and focused just on that portion because of the mushy messaging Senator Parent exhibited with regards to the rights of the imprisoned who are trans. It's a party problem more than a "Parent problem," dating as far back as last summer. That's when Trump campaign attack ads tied former VP Kamala Harris to the existence of the right for trans prisoners to have gender reassignment surgeries using taxpayer dollars. Neither Harris nor did any Democrat(s) codify that right; it's a "Constitutional" thing, and that's the shortest, simplest response no one on the business end of the attack has embraced. Nonetheless, there's WAY more to that "Elena Parent v trans mom" conversation, and the senator deserves it to be heard. Frankly, Kotler was completely out-of-line, over-the-top and belligerent to an unruly degree. Her tone, tenure and language to Parent was beyond reproach and warrants an apology, but who apologizes anymore, right? I'm honestly stuneed Senator Parent stayed on the call as long as she did, and she's to be commended for that. Take a listen for yourself and tell me what you think.
