In this episode of Audio QT, Karma Chávez talks with allgo co-founder and activist María Limón about her work supporting people living with HIV and AIDS in the early days of the pandemic, and the program called Informe Sida. This interview was recorded on December 1, 2021 and originally aired on KOOP Radio's People United program on Dec. 10. Thanks to Allan Campbell and KOOP for permission to reuse. María Limón, nacida y criada a la orilla del río que antes era grande, she finished raising herself among a circle of activists tending to issues as diverse as the gentrification of the East Side, getting the Texas national guard out of Honduras, and ensuring that Cuba stayed libre. Her fifteen minutes of fame involved the Austin police department flexing their authoritarian muscle at an anti-KKK rally and helping establish one of the longest-running queer POC organizations in the country while learning how to help close friends die. Having learned that changing the conditions that create injustice and inequality happens one meaningful connection at a time, she coaches people on uprooting the beliefs about ourselves and others an oppressive society shoves down our throats. UC Denver's Center on Domestic Violence provides the salary that brings home the fakin' bacon. Karma Chávez is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Mexican American and Latina/o Studies at UT. A federal investigation into the police response to the Uvalde mass shooting has been launched, but it does not carry the threat of criminal charges. Federal officials also warn of more gun violence in coming months, connected to the impending Supreme Court ruling on abortion and the November mid-term elections. As the Texas power grid continues (so far) to hold up under historic heat, an interesting stat emerges: almost half of the power consumed lately in the Lone Star State is coming from wind and solar sources. After being publicly shamed and having its scooters threatened with seizure by Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant, Bird has paid its outstanding tax bill of almost $150,000. Nearly a dozen high-value-breed dogs were stolen from a kennel in Cedar Creek by a team of masked thieves last Friday morning. "LivePD" - the reality TV series that was canceled after it recorded and then deleted footage of the police-involved death of Javier Ambler in 2019 - is returning to production under the new name "On Patrol: Live". A SmartAsset study shows that, at current average wages in Austin, it takes 57.4 hours of work per week to afford the average rent of Austin apartments - currently $1,346 per month. Texas Softball were trounced by OU in the opening game of the WCWS yesterday, 16-1. Game 2 starts at 6:30 Thursday night in the best-of-three series. Austin's Major League Rugby team, the Gilgronis, have been suspended from post-season play this year, reportedly due to salary cap violations. The title of "world's largest convenience store" - or, world's largest Buc-ee's - will soon be lost in New Braunfels, but is then set to return to Central Texas as the chain plans to replace its Luling location with a 75,000 square foot store. Live music for the weekend: Friday shows include the Camp Nowhere EDM festival at Germania Insurance Amphitheater, Dishwalla at the Haute Spot, KOOP Radio's 27th Birthday Party at Antone's with Kalu James and the Electric Joint, and an A. Sinclair record release at Hotel Vegas. Saturday, Jimmy Buffet plays the Moody Center, Amos Lee is at ACL Live at the Moody Center, Earthgang plays Emo's, Belle and Sebastian play Stubbs, and HeartByrne is at the Far Out Lounge. UMI plays the Scoot Inn on Sunday. And the June heat wave remains relentless, with high temperatures reaching 106 expected over the upcoming weekend.

Guided & Thinking Critically by MLK: We Are all Born with Same Abilities but are They Nourished or Stunted? We are all born with the same abilities at birth. But by race, are we provided with equal opportunity to the economic and psychological environment that nurtures those potentialities or are we subject to an environment that stunts those potentialities? In celebration of Black History Month at KOOP Radio and on the 57th Anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X, Special Guest Dr Algernon Austin joins Bringing Light Into Darkness to discuss How Far Are We from Martin Luther King's Dream of Equality of Opportunity and to recognize Dr King's prioritizing of economic justice which he indistinguishably connected to his commitment to civil rights and ending racism. Dr Algernon Austin is the Director for Race and Economic Justice at the Center for Economic and Policy Research and he has conducted research and writing on issues of race and racial inequality for over 20 years. His primary focus has been on the intersection of race and the economy. How are we doing at providing equality of opportunity for children by race? We discuss and explain the findings of researchers at DiversityDataKids.org, and their work around their ‘Child Opportunity Index.' Some 50 years after MLK's death, they document that 67% of Black children live in ‘Very Low' or ‘Low Opportunity' neighborhoods while 65% of white children live in ‘Very High' or ‘High Opportunity' neighborhoods. Please join us as Dr Austin leads us in a discussion explicating Dr King's concern of the connection between race and class as we discuss the central issues connected to economic justice and the growing wealth inequality in our country that is decimating the middle class.

Celebrating IWD: The Lives they Save & the Wealth they create for Others International Women's Day is celebrated on Bringing Light Into Darkness (BLID) as homage is paid to women for the oppression, they face in the world well into the 21st century. While wealth inequality & the wealth of colonial powers got a jump start through slavery, today wealth inequality has found surrogate sources to exploit. On IWD we recognize the oppression of women today that help line the pockets of the wealthy. Did you know that as of 2019, the world's 2,153 billionaires, had more wealth than 4.6 billion people. Where does such wealth & wealth inequality come from? According to the pre-pandemic January 2020 Oxfam report the bottom of the economy, women and girls, especially the disenfranchised, are putting in 12.5 billion hours every day of care work for free, and countless more hours for poverty wages. Oxfam calculated that this unpaid work labor of women, adds value to the economy of at least $10.8 trillion annually. Tending to others, cooking, cleaning, and fetching water and firewood are essential daily tasks for the well-being of societies, communities and the functioning of the economy that save untold lives. Special guests, Austin, Texas duo Kristin Davidson and Carolyn Phillips of Hardened & Tempered join BLID to share how their professional life experiences serving the human condition in Oncology caregiving and in Law legally representing the indigent has shaped the messaging of their music. These fascinating talents join TexChromosome's founder and KOOP Community Council (CC) member PJ Pullus on BLID to share their fascinating insights & will be featured at KOOP's CC & Texchromosome Grateful to Get Back weekend event celebrating non-profit work done on behalf of the underserved. Special guests are featured from previously aired shows as 4/11/21/election results for the President of Ecuador are being finalized. Andres Arauz who in February received the greatest share of votes, but was just shy of avoiding a runoff, was interviewed on KOOP Radio back on 10/14/19. Economist, Andres Arauz was a Senior Research Fellow Center for Economic Research (CEPR) and a former Minister of Knowledge of Ecuador and a former Central Bank General Director during Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa's administration. Guillaume Long, interviewed on BLID back on 8/10/20 held several cabinet positions in the government of Ecuador, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Culture, Minister of Knowledge and Human Talent, and most recently, serving as Ecuador's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva under both President Correa and the Lenin Moreno Admin before resigning in protest. Andres was on BLID during the midst of great unrest and brutal repression of that dissent and now is poised to become Ecuador's new president. Guillaume describes the term lawfare which has been utilized successfully to circumvent the voting preferences of the majority people by eliminating their favored candidates from eligibility through ‘lawfare'. This show provides a historically contexted and indices documented overview of the majority population's quality of life improvements or quality of life compromises as they are connected to governments favored or disliked by Washington.
