Claire de Mézerville López is joined by co-host, Executive Director of IIRP Canada, Pat Lewis, for a special IIRP Canada series, highlighting the use of restorative practices and restorative justice across Canada. In this episode, they welcome seasoned youth care specialist Joe Blake to the Restorative Works! Podcast. Joe joins us to discuss the representation of Indigenous youth in Canada's justice system and the cultural disconnect they often experience. He explains how restorative practices align closely with Indigenous ways of resolving conflict—centered on healing, empathy, and community. Through stories from his own practice, including a powerful anecdote involving two youth in a group home, Joe illustrates how even informal restorative conversations can defuse tension, foster understanding, and build authentic relationships. Joe is a restorative practices instructor with IIRP Canada. He runs restorative justice training workshops and has been working in the field of Child and Youth Care for more than fifteen years. Joe has a Master of Arts in Child and Youth Care. The research focus for his Master of Arts thesis is on restorative practices with Indigenous youth within the youth criminal justice system. Joe's key areas of interest in the field particularly lie in the youth criminal justice system, youth rights, restorative practices, social justice, Indigenous practices, and youth advocacy.  He teaches these topics at several Toronto-based colleges, including Toronto Metropolitan University, Sheridan College, and Durham College. Joe serves in a variety of family counselling and court-ordered supervised access program positions. Joe identifies as Ojibwe, First Nations and is especially aware of the challenges that Indigenous and other marginalized youth face.  Tune in to learn more about how restorative justice offers a meaningful alternative to punitive systems by promoting accountability without shame, and how youth themselves begin to use these tools in their homes and schools.

There's a profound beauty in planting a seed and watching its journey from a tiny speck to a flourishing plant. But what if that journey could also nurture the minds and hearts of children? That's exactly what our panel of guests are doing through their charity, Green Thumbs, which is dedicated to teaching schoolchildren the art and science of gardening. Sunday Harrison is the founder and current executive director of Green Thumbs Growing Kids, a Toronto community-based not-for-profit now celebrating its 25th anniversary. Their mission is to cultivate environmental stewardship through hands-on garden and food education for urban children and their communities. Joining Sunday are three Green Thumbs board members. Chanel Harris was an inaugural participant in the school garden program in the early 2000s. Also joining us is Sail Vettivelu, who worked as a summer intern at Green Thumbs in 2009, and has been volunteering with the group ever since. Rounding out the panel is environmentalist and artist, Iris “Ike” Karuna. Ike's relationship with Green Thumbs began as a Child and Youth Care placement student, and continued as a staff member. All of our guests today are passionate about introducing children to the wonders of gardening and all the related life lessons. From patience and responsibility to resilience and the interconnectedness of life, the act of tending to a garden offers invaluable teachings that extend far beyond the boundaries of the garden bed. Join us as Sunday, Chanel, Sail, Ike and I delve into the transformative power of planting an early seed and watching it grow, not just in the garden but in the hearts and minds of our future generations. First time mama, Bec, joins me to share her transformational journey from Maiden-to-Mother. Bec shares so much wisdom in this episode, the grief associated with moving from maiden to mother, Bec shares the realities of her back labour and her powerful home birth of her first daughter Addison. You don't want to miss this beautiful episode filled with so much story medicine. Bec's story encompasses ALL parts of herself-mind, body and soul and began years ago, long before she would welcome her daughter wombside.  As a child, pregnancy, birth and motherhood were pieces she romanticized about often. They were brought to life when she would breastfeed her dolls and step into the roll of Mother in any game of house, barbies, etc.  As a teenager and young adult, these pieces still showed up strong for her, just in a different light.  Professionally, a career with children at the core unfolded after she graduated with her Advanced Diploma in Child and Youth Care. Personally, it wasn't time to role play anymore. It was time to dive in. To do the ‘heartwork'. To heal. To transmute traumas and addictions that no longer served… “it ran in my family, until it ran into me” is a quote that has always resonated with Bec and the path she leads.  Last year at this time, ‘right timing' prevailed and with the unwavering support and trust from her partner of 11 years, Sean, a profound journey of conscious conception, a wild pregnancy and out-of-system Homebirth, supported by Traditional Birth Companions, unfolded and they recently welcomed their beautiful daughter, Addison, earthside November 2023.  This is a story of radical self-responsibility, spiritual growth and a whole lot of MAGIC. Florence Ashley, “Reflecting on the Rhetoric of Adoption in Trans Youth Care” (2023) 2 Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies 249–75   Abstract: Adoption is increasingly being discussed as an alternative to procreation for trans youth given the impact of gender-affirming medical care on fertility. In this article, I caution against idyllic views of adoption and offer a critical perspective on the social, political, and ethical dimensions of adoption. After reviewing adoption's relationship to sexism, racism, imperialism, and cisheteronormativity, I sketch an alternative view of adoption as a complex and multi-valenced form of care in an unjust world. In this episode, we have a very special guest: Neve Swart, an 8 years old girl who, despite her young age, is already raising money for children in Africa.Neve is from South Africa and has been living in Luxembourg since January 2021.  Recently, she realised that she had a skill and a passion for doing nails and other beauty treatments and started treating her much delighted mother. Others started noticing her mom's nails, and were extremely surprised when they were told that Neve did them. Soon the ‘'bookings'' started flying in. However, when her ‘'clients'' started to give her money she did not feel comfortable receiving the money for herself. She thought about this for a while, and approached her mother - saying ‘'Mom I love doing nails for others, however I think there are others that need the money more than me'', she then asked if she could start a fund and raise money for children back in South Africa. Growing up in South Africa she was exposed to many families and children who are in need of a home, food, clothing, love and care. While living in South Africa she would donate her clothes, toys and make sandwiches for others - she thus felt she needed to do more for the children back home now that she is living away from home. And that's how her adventure started.Today she has already made a donation to the 'Eastern Province Child and Youth Care centre' and she is planning to reach an even more ambitious goal: raising Eur 500 for a new donation to the centre.Help Neve reach her goal either by contacting hi@knowthybrand.com to book a manicure if you are in Luxembourg (we will put you in contact with her parents) or by donating directly at her fundraising page: https://urlzs.com/uV9qh

Understanding WHY we do the things we don't want to do often initiates stopping doing them. So please stick with my lengthy set up this episode - it's well worth it. Lynn and I explore adoptees' concern for other people's  thoughts about us including why it triggers are own insecurities. What's wrong with me is perhaps the most common questions we ask ourselves. Listen in for some  more empowering questions in this profound episode. Here's the link to the book I mention in the podcast https://www.amazon.com/Missing-Link-Sydney-Banks-ebook/dp/B07FN6CYPBLynn Deiulis was placed on adoption at the age of nine months. Her adoptive parents were advised to raise her as their own and forget where she had come from. Her parents followed this advice, and adoption became an uncomfortable topic. Her mother would answer Lynn's adoption questions, but the emotion in her mother's eyes eventually made Lynn stop asking. Lynn grew up not knowing how or whom to ask her many questions. As an adult, Lynn found and met some of her paternal and maternal birth family members and was able to learn much about the genetic and familial information she grew up without. As a result, she has been able to piece together more of her story.Lynn holds a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Care and enjoyed a twenty-five year career in adoption services. Lynn has worked with many members of the adoption triad (children, birth parents, adoptive parents) as well as foster care and kinship families. She co-facilitated support groups where adult adopted persons, and birth parents, could freely share their unique stories and learn how and where to get some of their questions answered. Her personal and professional journey sparked a passion to write a book that offers an opportunity for children to learn the unique details of their adoption or kinship stories, and helps adults talk to children about how they came to be living together as a family or living with another family. She also hopes the book will help professionals who work with children living through all phases of the adoption or kinship journey. Lynn resides in Northern Ontario, where she enjoys spending time with her husband and family, especially her grandchildren. The relationship between the author and the illustrator has a unique quality. Krista Donnelly and Lynn are birth half sisters who met each other as adults in 2018. Separated by the adoption process, Krista and her three full sisters grew up not knowing that two older half sisters existed. When Lynn decided to write this book, she reached out to her “new sister” who is a talented graphic designer. Krista brought the book's characters to life while building a relationship with Lynn at the same time. Krista learned about the impact on Lynn of growing up as an adoptee, while Lynn learned about the impact on Krista of discovering she had two birth half sisters she never knew existed! Their new mutual understanding of the impact of adoption has enriched this book. Lynn and Krista hope this book will help children and families talk about these unique stories long before the children become adults.Links to buy the book and more: https://www.whatisyourstorybook.com/https://www.facebook.com/whatisyourstorybookhttps://twitter.com/AuthorLynnDhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCampCrQmQomhUskZ8-9fzcg/featuredhttps://www.instagram.com/authorlynnd/

Thriving Adoptees - Inspiration For Adoptive Parents & Adoptees

If you are afraid you are definitely not alone. Fear is a familiar feeling for all parents but adoption can take it to another level. That's what adult adopted person and retired adoption professional Lynn Deiulis learned working in adoption for 25 years. In this fascinating and empowering episode we get to the very heart of that fear so you can parent with less of it, thrive and help your kids thrive too.Lynn Deiulis was placed on adoption at the age of nine months.

I spoke to Isabel on July 5, 2022. We spoke about the winding road of sorts that we can go on with the work we do in the world and also how we don't always need to know the whole picture before we take the leap and follow our intuition. It was wonderful to learn more about Isabel and the journey she has been on in the last few years. BioIsabel is a Fire Team K-9's Dog trainer, Child and Youth Care worker, and a tour guide at Llama-Zing Adventures. Her passions are helping people live happier and healthier lives through pet therapy and to care for animals. Isabel offers therapy dog visits with her two certified therapy dogs, Ralph (Newfoundland) and Hachi (Saint Bernard). She also trains dogs and has experience working with many domestic animals, farm animals, even a Camel, parrot, racoons and more.Growing up, Isabel was always extremely interested in animals, especially dogs. She had her first dog, Tobi, when she was 5 years old. Being sensitive to energies, experiencing reoccurring nightmares and anxiety, Tobi helped her feel safe. She knew dogs were created to help humans. After working 13 years as a Pharmacy Technician, Isabel felt she needed to change careers and follow her passions to become a Child and Youth Care Worker and to work with animals. Being a single mom of two at the time, she took a leap of faith and trusted that the universe had her back. Since then, she is living her dream, as a dog trainer and tour guide on a farm. Life also gifted her a third child and many more pets along her new journey.Support the show

Chantal Adams grew up with the teachings and Haida laws of respect and consent. Along her journey, she realized how important deep meaningful connections and conversations were to her: along with belonging and connection to community, land, and water. Wanting to continue building connections, in a healing way with people, Chantal pursued a degree in Child and Youth Care with an Indigenous Specialization. She became involved in re-search with Kinship Rising, that re-centers Indigenous ways of being through arts and land-based methodologies. It was through this journey that she found her passion for research and storytelling. It is Chantal's keen affection for people, nature, healing, reclamation, and belonging that drives her research and creative journey.Gabriel Swift has always been fascinated by the process of creating art. Intrigued by stories about the power of the natural world and the human condition, he witnesses how visual storytelling provides an outlet to share stories across cultures and generations that can make lasting impacts on our lives and the decisions we make. He has worked alongside an award-winning team as a cinematographer on the feature length film “Coextinction.” Everyone has a voice, a perspective, and a story, they just need to be heard. Gabriel's focus is on creating films that heal and foster connection to ourselves and the natural world.  Nicolette partnered with Gabriel and Chantal on create two documentaries, 1) Grounded in My Roots and 2) Food of Our Ancestors which tell the stories of discovering food as medicine and Nicolette's journey running and biking across Canada to uncover the barriers that BIPOC peoples face in accessing clean real foods. Today's episode shares how Indigenous, Black, People of Colour (BIPOC) are disproportionally affected by chronic disease and how human and planetary healing can happen through re-connecting with food, the earth, ourselves, and our spirits. Chantal shares stories from her Haida Gwaii lineage and Gabriel shares how he was nurtured through spending time with his family in India. They discuss how their generation is choosing to live differently from the Baby Boomers that over consumed and how overconsumption led to the mental and physical health breakdowns and climate change that we see today. The first step: look to our Elders and to Nature. We need to connect to lineages and roots and bring them to the forefront if we are to heal ourselves. Find Chantal and Gabriel at:Website: https://sgaanuweestudios.ca/Instagram: @ sgaanuweestudiosGabriel Swift: https://www.gabrielswift.ca/Instagram: @gabrielcswiftVimeo: https://vimeo.com/gabrielswiftChantal Adams: https://www.chantaladams.ca/Instagram: @chantaladams Discussed on the PODCAST:Audrey Siegl - https://bit.ly/3M8TEcKFilm - Gather - https://gather.film/Film - Coextinction - https://coextinctionfilm.com/Russel Brand Podcast - https://www.russellbrand.com/podcasts/Wim Hoff - https://www.wimhofmethod.com/Landon Copplestone - https://landoncopplestone.com/Shi Narayani Holistic Centre - https://bit.ly/3NeKfleGrounded In My Roots - https://www.groundedinmyroots.com/Food of Our Ancestors - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU_E_v12Rh0 Watch the trailer for Nicolette's new film Food Of Our Ancestors - https://bit.ly/FoodAncDoc If you are currently battling a Chronic Degenerative Disease, Nicolette is doing one on one consultations again.
