Another special election just delivered still more bad news for the GOP, but Democrat Marilyn Lands', well, landslide should really have Republicans quaking. As we explain on this week's episode of The Downballot, this was the first test of in vitro fertilization at the ballot box since the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling that imperiled the procedure, and Republicans failed spectacularly—with dire implications for November.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also examine the fallout from Tammy Murphy's shock decision to abandon her Senate bid and why Andy Kim's campaign has dealt a major blow to New Jersey's political machine. The Davids then explore whether the seemingly impossible might come to pass: Could Democrats take back control of the House before Election Day? Whatever the odds, Democrats need to be ready. Our guest this week is Lauren Baer, a 2018 congressional candidate in Florida who now runs Arena, an organization dedicated to supporting the next generation of campaign staff. Baer tells us about her group's work to train and place staff with campaigns, including how they help staffers weather the dry "shoulder season" between election cycles. She also warns about the huge GOP advantage in funding their talent pipeline and explains how Democrats can make up this crucial gap in campaign infrastructure.

Lauren Baer worked at high levels of the American foreign policy establishment...an aide to former Secretary of State Madeline Albright and in the Obama State Department as Senior Advisor to Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry...until the 2016 election drove home the importance of political campaigns. She then put her own name on the ballot as the Democratc nominee in a targeted US House race in South Florida. That experience drove her decision to join Arena as their Managing Partner to recruit, train, and support the next generation of political campaign staff. In this conversation, she talks her time at the upper echelons of American foreign policy, her experience as a political rookie running in a targeted US House seat, and the work and thinking she's doing to invest in a more diverse and skilled next generation of political operatives.IN THIS EPISODELauren's late-in-life decision to get involved in politics…Lauren's time as Senior Advisor in the US State Department…Lauren's experiences working with Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry…Lauren talks the legacy of Madeline Albright…Lauren's thoughts on the most under-discussed foreign policy issue facing the U.S….Lauren runs for Congress in 2018, learning about campaigns as she goes…Lauren's take on Florida's status as a swing state…Lauren talks about the work being done by Arena train political operatives…What is the hurdle that makes a diverse pipeline of campaign staff so challenging…Lauren on the staffing "crisis” in political campaigns…Lauren's response to the idea that the Democratic staffing class tilts too liberal…How Lauren thinks about the movement toward unionizing political campaigns…AND…air quotes, Yasser Arafat, Joe Biden, bright blue bathing suits, Val Demings, End Citizens United, golden retrievers, Al Gore, Hacks, Henry Kissinger, Harold Koh, Hard Nos, The Marshall Plan, Brian Mast, moral authority, Debbie Murcasel Powell, pink cowboy hats, Samantha Power, relational organizing, Alex Roarty, Bernie Sanders, Donna Shalala, David Shor, Elissa Slotkin, Donald Trump, Raphael Warnock, WhatsApp, white-shoe law firms, wonkish outward facing orientations & more!
In 2018, Lauren Baer ran for Congress from Florida's 18th District. She won the Democratic primary handily and came close to unseating her rival in a deep-red district. While she had a stellar professional background, including stints working directly for two Secretaries of State and for the Ambassador to the United Nations, she was a first-time candidate and her district had never had an out, lesbian mom candidate running for the seat. She now runs Arena.run, an organization that prepares new candidates for office and trains staff to be effective. But years before all this, Lauren found herself in a career transition, wondering what she could or should do, and how she would accomplish that. That's when she and our host met, and it's when she was confronted big time with the anxieties and satisfactions that come up in networking. In this episode, Lauren talks with Coach Michael about her initial views on networking, how she made the process work with her, and how she took it to the next level when running for office. She also has great advice for people thinking of public office but who haven't quite taken the first step. An extra-delightful and interesting episode!

Arena's mission is to convene, train, and support the next generation of candidates and campaign staff. The organization rose up after Donald Trump was elected in 2016, in an effort to put their frustration to good use, and they've now trained 5,500 people since the beginning of 2019. Lauren Baer is a Managing Partner with Arena, and today she explains how getting involved in local races is a game-changer, as the effects inevitably ripple out into national politics. And as a former Obama administration member and Florida congressional candidate, Lauren knows the importance of a good support staff; at Arena, you don't have to train to run for office in order to get involved--you can learn how to participate in campaigning and supporting a candidate from behind the scenes. Lauren Baer, a former senior policy advisor at the State Department and candidate for Congress in 2018, joined the Millennial Politics podcast to talk about how foreign relations impact the response to a pandemic like this one and how the State Department under President Obama would have reacted differently. During this episode, Sam and Nathan ask Baer how the lackluster response by the United States government to coronavirus will affect our nation's standing on the world stage and what that could mean for future global emergencies. She also discusses what solutions she would be pushing for right now if she were in Congress and gives us some rapid-fire answers to big policy proposals such as universal basic income and a federal jobs guarantee. Baer also touched on President Trump's announcement of his intent to fire the State Department Inspector General Steve Linick and the circumstances surrounding this situation. She discusses how unusual it is for a president to fire multiple Inspectors General in a short period of time like Trump has done and how it sets a dangerous precedent and should be cause for concern.

Historically, stereotypes about women focused on the frailties of the “weaker sex.” But many women running for office this year prove those notions false. Candidates have held positions in the military, intelligence agencies, and the State Department. This is the third of three episodes in which we’re speaking with women whose career experiences exemplify strength. Host Jenny Kaplan chats with Lauren Baer, a Democrat running in FL-18. Lauren was a senior advisor to both of President Barack Obama’s secretaries of state and to the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Lauren talks about how her background in diplomacy and international relations impacted her decision to run. Experts share their perspectives on how different careers add to and influence policy perspectives and political races. She worked in the Obama Administration for two Secretaries of State (John Kerry & Hillary Clinton), and then for UN Ambassador Samantha Power. She got to know John Kerry's golden retriever (Ben) while working on Mahogany Row, and she traveled across the globe working in high-pressure foreign policy scenarios. But it wasn't until after Trump's election that Lauren Baer first thought about running for office. She credits the birth of her new-born with a fresh desire to take on our challenges head-on. She believes everyone in her district should be able to have access to quality affordable healthcare, a first-rate public education, the opportunity to live in a beautiful (and protected) environment, and a strong economy that preserves and strengthens the middle class. We sat down with Lauren on our podcast to discuss her progressive platform for her district, her experience working in the Obama Administration, and her optimism for the future.
