We discuss what it takes for citizens to take action and run for elected office. Wendy ran as a Democrat in Utah because she wanted to give voters a viable, different choice. She knew it was going to be difficult to win as a first time candidate, but she ran so hard that she left a body mark in the wall. She lost by a mere 78 votes. Her civic action toolkit recommendations are: 1. Vote and encourage other people to vote 2. OA1059 This week we welcome Rhode Island state senator Meghan Kallman for a conversation about the power of state lawmaking and ordinary people in elected office. Meghan is a professor of sociology at UMass Boston whose work in both the theory and practice of how people organize led her to a parallel career in politics. As the Democratic Presidential ticket coalesces around a woman and (for the first time since 1980!) a non-lawyer, we discuss the unique challenges which women still face in US politics at every level as well as what it is like for someone with no legal training or no political experience to run for and hold elected office. Also: How can state and local governments make progressive change even when the federal government can't or won't act? What is it like for someone with no legal training to write laws? And why is Rhode Island the last state in the Union to take an entire day off to celebrate the US victory over Japan? On today's episode Sarah sits down with two-term Senator Sandy Senn of District 41 to discuss how she and 5 other women in the Senate came together (across party lines!) to stop South Carolina from passing a total abortion ban. As we know Sarah has been to the statehouse to speak on this issue and Sandy offers fascinating insight into the process of law-making and what she and her female colleagues had to do to protect women's rights in South Carolina. Senator Sean is a republican Senator but her story shows just how important it is for us to come together as women and preserve women's rights in our state and beyond. Please get informed about your local elections and make your voice heard!

In our latest episode, we interview Erin Loos Cutraro, the founder and CEO of She Should Run, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging women to run for office - it's so needed! Did you know that women still hold less than 30% of all elected offices across the federal, state, and local level, and the numbers are even lower when looking at women from underrepresented communities? Black women comprise less than 6% of officeholders in Congress, statewide elective executive offices, and state legislatures; only 7.9% of all women state legislators identify as Latina; and, roughly 0.23 percent of U.S elected officials identify as LGBTQIA+. Women are still less likely than men to have thought about running for office or to express interest in running for office in the future. Women are less likely to have opted into leadership roles from a young age. In fact, few of us– less than 2%– grow up with the dream to run for office one day. There's lots of work to do!Before the interview, we chat about the movie American Fiction and how the Black American experience is portrayed in media. In 2018, Nigerian lawyer and politician Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan publicly announced her intentions to run for a seat in the Nigerian Senate, representing the people of Kogi Central. No matter how you look at life today, no one is happy with the state of politics. Many think they have the answer that will disrupt the current extreme climate. Here in Tennessee, there's talk of changing the process of how you run for office. I doubt it will ever be discussed, but it's an exciting idea. Basically, it says you can't run for a new political position if you're currently in office. You can't jump from job to job. You must finish your current term, and then you can run for a new office... What You Need to Know is Ron DeSantis was courageous to run for office. He may not feel great about it right now, but he's definitely wiser now than when he began his campaign. It's honestly pretty extraordinary to stand up and be willing to go into the spotlight and be mocked. Most folks who run don't win. It's a hard and humbling experience. His endorsement of Trump all but wraps up this primary, but DeSantis has earned our congratulations for getting in there and doing it. We have to remember to find the good people running or who have run and thank them for doing it. We have to encourage extraordinary willingness. Sara Guillermo's family immigrated to the United States when she was a small child. She grew up with an appreciation for this country and a desire to serve that expressed itself as early as the 1st grade, when she ran to be her “classroom organizer.” From there, she has held several leadership positions and now serves as the CEO of IGNITE, an organization dedicated to train girls and young women with the skills they need to understand how their government works and arm them with the skills they need to actively participate, up to and including running for office. Former President Trump continues to hold a big lead over his GOP rivals. He currently leads in both national polls and in key states like New Hampshire, which is an early-voting state and historically has had a good track record selecting the next United States President. However, the Granite State's governor does not believe the race in New Hampshire or for the Republican nomination is over. On the Rundown earlier this week, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH) explained to the Rundown's why he thinks there is plenty of time for President Trump's opponents to catch up. He laid out how they can do so and discussed scenarios where the former President loses. Sununu also shared why his state is proud of its first-in-the-nation primary tradition, and why he thinks gerrymandering contributed to the polarization of political parties in the country. We made edits for time and thought you might like to hear our entire conversation with FOX News Sunday Anchor Shannon Bream. On today's FOX News Rundown Extra, you'll hear even more from the outspoken governor and get more of his insights on how politics is broken, but also why he is optimistic about the country's future.
