In what sounds like history's most congested podcast episode, our sneezing host Hawk delivers the latest on Florida's Senate race, where former Medicare-fraud champion turned Senator Rick Scott is facing off against Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Apparently, Rick Scott spent $160 million of his own money to win three elections by razor-thin margins, which Hawk suggests might be a sign of mental illness - hey, at least he's creating jobs in the campaign advertising industry!Between sneezes and allergy attacks, Hawk explains how Scott - a man who literally banned the phrase "climate change" from government documents in a state that's basically one hurricane away from becoming Atlantis - is now trailing in polls against Mucarsel-Powell. The highlight of her campaign? A 75-stop bus tour across Florida - one stop for each time Rick Scott pleaded the Fifth Amendment when questioned about that teeny-tiny Medicare fraud situation. Talk about creative campaign messaging! Finally, Hawk manages to explain through his histamine crisis why Trump won't be able to steal the 2024 election, largely because he's no longer in charge of, well, anything. The episode wraps up with a tale of "Peggy Chud" and "Tom Chud" (not their real names, but close enough) in Arizona, who found out the hard way that refusing to certify election results because your candidate lost is, surprisingly, illegal. Who knew? Hawk certainly did.Visit Debbie's campaign website and be sure to donate!!! In 1996, after earning her bachelor's degree in political science from Pitzer College and a master's degree in international political economy from Claremont Graduate University, Mucarsel-Powell moved to Florida. There she raised money for nonprofits like the Hope Center, the Zoo Miami Foundation, and the Coral Restoration Foundation. Before entering politics Mucarsel-Powell held various posts at Florida International University, including associate dean of its College of Medicine, where she contributed to efforts to expand health care services in the state. “I was always very passionate about being involved, helping people in the community because I was very grateful for the opportunity I got when I came here,” Mucarsel-Powell told McClatchy. She was elected in 2018 on a platform of health care expansion, gun reform, immigration reform, and a commitment to addressing climate change. She sits on the House Judiciary Committee and is a member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. The issue of gun violence is particularly personal to her because Mucarsel-Powell's father was murdered outside his home in Ecuador when she was 24. She has invoked her family's experience in advocating for gun-safety measures such as universal background checks, explaining how it drives her to “take action to do what you can so that no one has to go through what you went through.” 35 minutes Wajahat Ali is a Daily Beast columnist, public speaker, recovering attorney, and tired dad of three cute kids. Ohio - Jessica rates this race as a toss-up between incumbent Sherrod Brown (D) and Republican challenger Bernie Moreno. Nevada - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Jackie Rosen (D) and Republican challenger Sam Brown as lean Democratic. Arizona - Jessica rates the race between Ruben Gallego (D) and Kari Lake (R) as lean Democratic. Michigan - Jessica rates this open seat race as a toss-up between Democrat Elyssa Slotkin and Republican Mike Rogers. Wisconsin - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Tammy Baldwin (D) and Republican challenger Eric Hovde as lean Democratic. Pennsylvania - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Bob Casey (D) and Republican challenger David McCormick as lean Democratic. Maryland - Jessica rates the race between incumbent Ben Cardin's (D) successor, Angela Alsobrooks, and Republican challenger, former Governor Larry Hogan as likely Democratic. Overall, Jessica assesses that the Democrats currently have less than a 25% chance of holding onto their Senate majority, given the tough defensive map they face in 2024.Today Bill strongly encourages listeners to go to ActBlue.com to financially support Democratic Senate candidates that he believes are important, including John Tester, Sherrod Brown, Angela Alsobrooks, Ruben Gallego, Alyssa Slotkin, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, and Colin Allred. To keep democracy's head above water in 2024 the Democrats need what's called a trifecta - meaning the Presidency, the House and the Senate - and keeping the senate is going to be a tough slog because Democrats have what's called a “bad map”. So today, instead of talking about the must win swing races we hear about all the time, we're going to discuss two Senate races that almost no-one is paying attention to. Two Senate races practically no-one is investing in, because it's assumed they've already been won by Republicans when the truth is they haven't. American Democrats often function in this weird defeatist culture where we keep fighting over the same 6 states and seeding other states to Republicans with the assumption they're lost and no Democrat can ever win there. It's not fair to the people who have different opinions in those states. It's not fair to the people who lose their rights thanks to Republican policies, and it's not democratic. People should have a candidate to vote for, and that candidate should have the opportunity to win. So today's episode includes two women, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (or DMP) from Florida and Katrina Christiansen from North Dakota. We're going to hear their stories and remind ourselves that no state should be written off. That everybody deserves a chance to be represented in America and with so much on the line, we need to support every Democrat running. The party might not be focusing on these two races, but We the People, should be. As always, if you find worth in what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. This episode is dedicated to the extraordinary Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her remarkable contributions to health, safety, humanity and the human spirit. Bonnie Lautenberg is an artist, photographer and writer. Her works have been featured in gallery shows, museums and art fairs throughout the country. In 2022, Lautenberg was appointed by the White House to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts.  Lautenberg is the type of artist who seamlessly communicates her seasoned life experiences through the lens of her camera and her digital canvas. Currently, she divides her time between New York and Palm Beach ‒ retaining the ties she nurtured in Washington, DC while she was the wife of the late Senator Frank Lautenberg. She has been described as “having enough Washington insider stories to fill a book.” Giffords Senior Advisor Debbie Mucarsel-Powell was the first South American-born immigrant ever elected to Congress. Debbie immigrated to the United States at the age of 14 with her mother and three sisters. When she was 24, Debbie's father was murdered, which led her to dedicate her life to advocating for commonsense gun reform.   Debbie was elected to Florida's 26th Congressional District in 2018. In Congress, she focused on foreign affairs, education, healthcare policy, environmental sustainability, and gun violence prevention. She sat on the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism & Homeland Security and served as Vice-Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, where she led efforts to pass the first gun safety legislation in 25 years. Debbie came to Congress with more than 20 years of experience at the FIU College of Medicine, FIU College of Health & Urban Affairs, FIU College of Social Work, Justice and Public Affairs, and Miami-Dade College, as well as experience at nonprofits providing social services, education, and environmental sustainability. Fluent in Spanish, Debbie is also available for Spanish-language media. As someone that has spent her life's work on expanding access to quality healthcare – impacting the lives of thousands, she knows that it's inconceivable that politicians in D.C. would consider ripping away healthcare access from our families. Debbie understands we must continue to improve on what's working and fix what's broken in our health care system, not abandon people who need it the most. Giffords (www.Giffords.org) is a leader in the movement to end gun violence in America. Led by the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the organization brings decades of political, legal, and policy expertise to the fight for gun safety. Nearly 50,000 people died from gun violence in the U.S. in 2021. This uniquely American crisis leaves no community untouched — but it doesn't have to be this way. From universal background checks to community-based violence intervention strategies, we know that there are proven solutions that will make our country safer. In statehouses and courthouses across America, we're taking on the gun lobby and winning.  Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook in December 2012, the organization has helped pass more than 525 gun safety laws in nearly every state and Washington DC. Gun violence is a complex problem, and ending this epidemic will require a wide range of solutions. Giffords is committed to seeing this fight through, until the promise of a safe and just country is a reality for every person and community in America. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — They seized Jones’ phone and computer … the one she’s been using to post updates on the COVID-19 crisis. She calls them the “DeSantis Gestapo.” The search came after the Department of Health filed a complaint about unauthorized access to a messaging alert system used for emergencies. — The DOH reported 106 added fatalities from the disease Monday, as well as 7,700 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus — which is a bit of a break after the past several days of more than 10,000 new infections. — As the COVID-19 surge continues, the University of Florida is putting final changes to its plan for a full reopening in January. The faculty union is fuming and some folks in Gainesville believe the university is putting money ahead of health. — Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell of Miami says enough is enough; she has been on the Governor’s case all along … accusing him of putting politics ahead of public safety. What happened to the down-ballot Democrats? Going into election day, Democrats were expecting to pick up seats and expand their control of the House. Instead, they suffered consequential blows, still managing to hold the majority but ultimately losing seats. It was a shock that launched a bevy of post-mortems trying to figure out what went wrong. For Florida Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell it was impossible to sit back and listen as folks diagnosed from the sidelines what she had experienced firsthand; elected to office in part of the 2018 blue wave, Rep. Mucarsel-Powell lost her re-election bid this November. In fact, her majority-Hispanic district swung 22 points to Trump this year. While there are no straightforward clean cut answers about what unfolded in the election, Congresswoman Mucarsel-Powell offers a clear-eyed take of what she witnessed in Southern Florida and what she thinks the biggest lesson is for the Democratic Party.

Voting is done — but the counting continues. Sunrise’s resident pollster and pundit Steve Vancore speaks about Tuesday’s election. Also, on today’s Sunrise: — Florida sides with Donald Trump. It was a narrow win over Joe Biden, but that was more than enough to claim Florida’s 29 electoral votes. While there’s plenty of ballots to be counted in the Sunshine State, just not enough to change the outcome in the presidential race. — It was a good time to be an incumbent in Florida. Most state lawmakers and U.S. Representatives were re-elected. The notable exceptions were two Democratic Congresswomen from Miami-Dade. Donna Shalala and Debbie Mucarsel-Powell; they both lost in close races. — Not much is changing in the state Legislature. It's a preliminary count, but the state elections office projects Republicans will maintain their control of both chambers, with a 23-17 split in the Senate and a 77-43 split in the House. Some faces will change, but not the balance of power. — Thousands of former felons who served their time got the chance to vote again, thanks to Amendment 4, commonly known as the “second chance amendment.” But Florida’s Secretary of State is sending lists of names of former felons to local election offices claiming they’re not entitled to vote because they still owe money. — While there were no reports of any major disruptions on election day, plenty of people stood outside the polls trying to intimidate voters. — We now live in a COVID-19 “red zone.” A report from the White House Coronavirus Task Force says the rate of new cases in Florida has been increasing steadily since early October. They’ve issued reports to the nation’s Governors every week since June, but our Governor doesn’t want the public to see them. — And finally, checking in with an Orlando rapper known as “Glokk9” who has been busted for illegal possession of — a Glock 9.

With 298 Women Running For Office, The U.S. House Could Be Its Most Diverse

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2020 6:43

This year, there are more women running for office in the U.S. House of Representatives on major-party tickets than ever before, according to the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP). In 2018, dubbed a “year of the woman," a record 234 women ran in the general election, which resulted in the chamber welcoming its first Muslim women, Palestinian American woman, Native American women, and youngest-ever woman, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Next week, 298 will vie for a spot in the 435-seat chamber, a 27.4% increase from 2018. The trend extends across the aisle and demographic groups. For the Democratic party, 204 women are running, making up 47.9% of the party’s total nominees. They join 94 Republican women, 22.9% of GOP nominees. Analysts expect Democrats to earn a net gain of 10 to 20 seats in the House, which would build on their 2018 majority. Below, the good news, the bummer news, and six women to watch. New Mexico is likely to elect all women of color to the House, which would be the largest all-women delegation in history. Rep. Deb Haaland (NM-1) and Democratic newcomer Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-3) are favored to win. The race in District 2, which encompasses the southern half of the state, is currently tight, between Democratic incumbent Rep. Xochitl Torres Small and Republican Yvette Herrell, both of whom are women of color. But it's not just in New Mexico: According to the CAWP, 115 women of color have major-party nominations (82 Democrats and 33 Republicans). That includes at least 61 Black women, 32 Latinas, and six Native American women — records for each group. According to a Bustle report, at least 11 LGBTQ+ women are on the ballot, including Rep. Sharice Davids, Georgette Gómez in California, Gina Ortiz Jones in Texas, and Beth Doglio in Washington State. And at least 15 immigrant women are running, from Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell to Sima Ladjevardian in Texas. Looking at professional backgrounds, at least 15 current and former medical providers could join the U.S. House, from Dr. Hiral Tipirneni in Arizona to registered nurse Cori Bush in Missouri. And at least 60 women educators are vying for votes. But not every state shares these rosy stats on gender parity. According to Bustle's report, in six states, no women are nominated from either major party: Hawaii, Idaho, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota, and Utah. And in 17 states, all of the Republican nominees to the House are men. To make matters worse, four states — Alaska, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Vermont — have never sent a woman to the House. (Vermont, in a race to the bottom, is the only state that's never elected a woman to the Senate either.) Only one of those has a good shot of changing: This year in Alaska, independent Alyse Galvin is running a close race against Republican incumbent Rep. Don Young, to whom she lost by 6.6 points in 2018. Much like in 2018, many women are expected to make history in their respective states, like Cori Bush, who's likely to be Missouri's first Black woman elected to federal office. The six below would make history on a national level. Are you ready for Election Day? Start by registering to vote and making a plan for Nov. 3.
