This is the day we've had marked on our calendars for a little while now. We hope to see you in the room at the FWC meeting in Ocala FL and we hope you say your piece in support of a regulated bear hunt. Our voices will be met with “facts” based purely on emotion and tailored to fit a narrative. It's important when we speak, we speak educated facts not biased opinions so I'm going to provide you with a little education on how hunting is conservationUPO Gear & Such- https://uponation.co/ UPO Social Media- https://linktr.ee/underpressureoutdoorsBecome a Patron- https://www.patreon.com/user?u=45295718Deep Roots Rifle Company- https://shop.deeprootsrifleco.com/
Lionfish are an invasive species in Florida. They arrived in our waters as early as the 1980s and efforts to control the population are ongoing. Lionfish eat just about every creature they see in the sea, and can devastate ecosystems. Destin is holding a Lionfish Festival this weekend (17-18) to encourage people to catch the weird-looking fish and make a meal out of it. We speak with Tony Hart, Lionfish Outreach Coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

This week Jim and I got a chance to sit down and just talk about some of the current events across the hunting universe. Of course we talked on the Florida Black Bear hunt, I better see a bunch of you at the meeting on May 21st and 22nd by the way. The crazy fishing captain and I don't think I need to explain myself any further there. Early rifle season proposal for Georgia and Blue laws. We briefly covered some crossbow regulation changes that I think Jim might have been a victim of the ole April fools on but hey, it happens to the best of us. I'm guessing this based on the fact I can't find anything on the FWC website or anywhere else for that matter if you see something tag me in it. In a conversation with CancerNetwork®, Ginger J. Gardner, MD, FACOG, spoke about current research and advocacy efforts to improve clinical outcomes among patients with gynecological cancers. With diagnoses of gynecologic malignancies on the rise around the world, Gardner also highlighted the next steps for raising awareness in the field and addressing gaps in care. Gardner is a gynecologic surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, as well as the chair of the board for the Foundation for Women's Cancer (FWC). According to Gardner, approximately 115,000 of those in the United States and 1 million patients across the world are diagnosed with gynecologic cancer. Additionally, she highlighted a growing incidence of uterine cancers, which included a 2-fold increase in mortality among patients who are Black in the United States compared with other populations. As part of raising awareness in this patient population and advancing potential therapeutic solutions, Gardner described ongoing initiatives at FWC to facilitate collaboration among scientists, researchers, and gynecologic oncology providers to help improve outcomes. Regarding potential treatment innovations, she also highlighted clinical trials designed to assess various disease prevention methods and other therapies like targeted agents, PARP inhibitors, and antiangiogenic treatments. Looking ahead, Gardner detailed other potential developments in the gynecologic cancer space that she is excited about. For example, she spoke about future efforts to further uncover the tumor biology and molecular heterogeneity associated with these malignancies, which may help providers optimize treatment plans for patients. “We are seeing some impact in improvement for gynecologic cancers with innovation in many of our disciplines; that includes disease prevention and innovative modalities related to treatment, inclusive of surgical innovation, new targeted therapies, refining radiation treatment, and ultimately patient-reported outcomes. We need to keep our eye on the ball for where we're going next,” Gardner stated. “It is hard to dial it into just 1 or 2 snapshots, but I am so thankful that we have this time together to talk about the importance of gynecologic health awareness and research because it is important that we raise this conversation.”

A few months ago, Joseph Catanzariti AM turned 65 and thus had to retire from his position as vice president of the Fair Work Commission. His search for work in the months since, he says, has been more fraught than anticipated. Here, he reflects on the biases against senior lawyers who are willing and able to undertake full-time work, the wellness impacts of such ageism, and how he has looked to adapt following his tenure at the nation's workplace tribunal. In this episode of The Lawyers Weekly Show, host Jerome Doraisamy speaks with Joseph Catanzariti AM about his career in law spanning over four decades, the statutorily imposed retirements for judges around the country, why it has been so important to him to give back, the sense of purpose he finds as a lawyer, his reflections on being a judge, and the sense of making a difference in society. Catanzariti also discusses how he felt about his imposed retirement from FWC, his realisation that employers were not seeking a full-time 65-year-old professional, the biases dictating hiring decisions and societal impressions, how he has pivoted and responded vocationally, what legal member bodies can do to address the concerns of older practitioners, the wellness issues inherent with undervaluing those practitioners, and how both employers and individuals can navigate such issues. Steph is a Mum to a her nearly 7 year old son, a soldiers wife, and Operations manager for Forces Wives Challenge (FWC). In July 2019 Steph and her families' world was turned upside down when she became suddenly very unwell, and was subsequently diagnosed with a neurological disorder. Going from an active, full time working Mum and a keen horse rider, to fully dependant on a wheelchair, with complex health issues and requiring 24/7 care to support with everyday tasks, was life changing. With sheer determination, an incredible support network and a passion for adventure, less than two years later Steph was back in the saddle and aiming for the next challenge in life. Steph found her new 'place' within the FWC community amongst other women seeming adventure. In June 2023 Steph tackled FWC's ‘Ride to Freedom' expedition and became the world's first wheelchair dependant person to ride by horse back across the Pyrenees from France to Spain. Steph and her team battled extreme heat, a dangerous thunder and lightening storm, treacherous ground and long days in the saddle to complete the 130km route using the WW2 freedom trails. Steph has now also founded her own CIC (non-profit) called Equine Para-adventures, which will seek to offer disabled horse riders their own equine adventures out of the usual riding school set up. In February 2026 Equine Para-adventures will start its flagship adventure called ‘Ride to Independence' when a team of 6 ladies, including Steph, will ride a historic route across the Andes from Argentina to Chile and Steph will aim to complete it and gain another ‘worlds first'. *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time! How does the Florida Wildlife Corridor help provide resilience to climate change?Florida is ground-zero for climate change impacts as our natural and human communities grapple with increasing heat, flooding, sea level rise, and wildfire risk. In today's episode, we talk with Joshua Daskin, the Director of Conservation at Archbold Biological Station, about a recent assessment with Florida Atlantic University that identified the overlaps between land conservation in the Florida Wildlife Corridor and the resilience of the state's nature and people to advancing climate change. Archbold's conservation program uses the report's results to credibly motivate the Corridor's protection. At Archbold, Josh works to expand the use of science in conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. He leads Archbold's conservation strategy, connecting researchers with agencies, landowners, NGOs, and science collaborators to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of conservation actions from Archbold's own 20,000 acres to the statewide Florida Wildlife Corridor and beyond. Since 2021, he has been a leader of the scientific arm of the campaign to conserve the Corridor.Josh earned a B.S. in Biology and Environmental Studies from Brandeis University, a M.Sc. in Zoology while a Fulbright Scholar at James Cook University in Australia, and a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. Previously, Josh researched the impacts of war on African wildlife and helped reestablish scientific capacity in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique following the country's civil conflict. He was also a Donnelley Postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, a biologist in the US Fish and Wildlife Service headquarters office, and a research assistant at Archbold.Articles and links mentioned in the episode:Climate and Wildlife Corridors overview page: https://www.archbold-station.org/projects/climate-and-wildlife-corridors/The Florida Wildlife Corridor and Climate Change Full Report: https://archbold-cms.payloadcms.app/media/ClimateReport_FINAL_04152024-1.pdfPlanning Future Landscapes report: https://www.archbold-station.org/projects/cfrpc/Florida Wildlife Corridor Planning and Development Data (database of current building permit requests): https://archbold-cms.payloadcms.app/media/FLWC%20Statewide%20Study%20-%20Summary%20Report%20(2023-10-23).pdfThe full interactive ‘Bear Necessities' Story Map of M34, the Black Bear that inspired the FWC: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0cdea7371c874357a9307ac8ea701568FWC and Climate Change Water Report Executive Summary: https://archbold-cms.payloadcms.app/media/Climate%20Report%20-%20Executive%20Summary%20FINAL-2.pdfSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/florida-uncut/donations
