Why does getting exactly what you wanted so often still leave you unsatisfied a few weeks later? This message unpacks the psychology behind why achievement, comfort, and even winning never quite fill the hole they promise to — and turns to Jesus' words in John 6, where he calls himself "the bread of life," to explore what our deepest hunger actually requires. And in it, we find that Jesus challenges us to really pay attention to the difference between what we chase and what will actually satisfy us. SPEAKERS: Jay Kim (Saratoga), David Tieche (South Hills), video (RWC) Bible Passage(s): John 6:22-40

Signs of Life - The Gathering With Bob Ginsberg, Marta Kane and Tom and Melissa Gould Signs From Beyond: Mediumship, Grief, Soul Connections, and the Questions We Carry Summary Religion, Mysticism, and Mediumship The discussion opens with a listener asking how religious mediums reconcile scriptural prohibitions against communication with the deceased. The panel describes its view that mysticism and belief in continuing consciousness have existed within major religious traditions, while organized religious dogma can create fear or resistance around mediumship. Melissa recounts a painful hospice experience in which a nurse reacted strongly to her and Tom's belief that his mother would reunite with loved ones after death. Marta describes religious friends who are open to life after death and recalls a mystic rabbi who welcomed conversations about spiritual connection. The panel repeatedly distinguishes personal belief and mystical experience from institutional rules, while acknowledging that people raised with prohibitions may feel genuine apprehension. Learning to Communicate and Quiet the Mind Caller Pam asks how people might communicate with deceased loved ones for themselves. The panel recommends speaking to loved ones directly, using their names, and developing a regular practice of quieting the mind rather than trying to force an experience. Melissa describes a month-long meditation practice that gradually created a stronger internal sense of connection. Bob discusses mindfulness, positive emotion, nature, gratitude, music, and other practices the panel associates with raising one's vibration, while Tom emphasizes that calmness rather than emotional intensity is the desired state. Marta shares a guided visualization she used even during oral surgery, illustrating how focused imagery and breathing can move attention into a deeply relaxed mental space. Evidential Readings and Continuing Bonds The panel reflects on a recent retreat and the visible emotional impact of strong medium readings. They discuss why some people may find a reading from a qualified medium more convincing than a private experience, because specific information delivered by another person can feel less easily dismissed as imagination. The speakers recommend seeking mediums who provide evidential details and note that readings can be conducted remotely by phone or video. In response to a question about a recently deceased friend, the panel expresses its belief that loved ones remain aware of events, emotions, memorials, and family milestones. The conversation also includes discussion of orbs, cemeteries, celebrations, and the idea that continuing bonds may be felt most strongly when the living remain engaged with life. Traumatic Death, Children, and Soul Contracts A listener's questions about the deaths of three young children lead into the episode's most difficult discussion. The panel repeatedly acknowledges that it cannot know exactly what happens after traumatic death, but describes its belief that people crossing over are greeted, helped, and understood regardless of physical age. Several panelists discuss the concept of soul contracts—the idea that a soul may agree before birth to broad aspects of a physical lifetime, including a short life or difficult circumstances. Tom explicitly notes that he has not personally seen enough evidence to present that idea as certain, even though it has been widely discussed within spiritual circles. The panel also considers whether children who died very young could communicate through a medium and whether, from a spiritual perspective, they might possess awareness beyond their physical age. Signs, Pets, Past Lives, and Personal Meaning The conversation turns to worries about missing signs from deceased loved ones. Tom tells a humorous story about mowing over a feather he had interpreted as a sign, only to encounter another feather moments later, and the panel emphasizes that the recognition of a sign may matter more than preserving the physical object. They discuss recording signs in a journal, noticing subtle patterns, and accepting that signs may become less frequent as grief changes and life moves forward. The panel extends the same idea of continuing connection to beloved pets, describing love as the basis of an enduring bond. The discussion then moves to past lives, déjà vu, and regression, with Marta recounting a past-life regression that helped her understand and end a recurring dream she had experienced for years. Skepticism, Legitimate Mediums, and Hope In the final portion, the panel considers what happens when a medium cannot connect, recommending honesty, rescheduling, or refunding the sitter rather than forcing a reading. They describe skepticism as healthy when it is paired with openness to specific evidence, and they recount examples of skeptical people changing their views after receiving or witnessing detailed readings. Tom shares how a reading involving his mother affected his highly skeptical brother and recalls how his mother's growing belief in life after death helped her approach her own death with hope rather than fear. The panel discusses thought communication in spirit and then offers practical warning signs for evaluating a medium, including leading questions, information fishing, repetition, and a lack of specific evidence. The episode closes with a global peace prayer centered on love, forgiveness, kindness, humanity, and care for the Earth, followed by the message that loved ones are “only a heartbeat away.”

This past week, we explored the ancient practice of a Rule of Life not as a rigid set of laws, but as a trellis to support our spiritual growth. Drawing from Jesus' own rhythm of service and withdrawal in Luke 5, we discussed how to create intentional patterns around the Spiritual, Self, and Others. Rather than a self-improvement plan, this "version one" rule is a flexible, attainable invitation to reorient ourselves to the present and stay open to the transformational move of the Holy Spirit as our seasons shift. Fr. Tom Wilson joins Patrick to discuss God's Calling in our Lives How do you prepare for the big things in life when discerning your call? (5:14) where do we begin when listening to the voice of God? (16:37) Scott - I've met with Fr. Tom in my late 20's about going into the priesthood. I sat with it for 25 years and finally applied at age 50. If I would have done it over, I would have started earlier, don't let fear in the way. (27:00) Break 1 Antonio - I just turned my life to God. I told him I can't do it my way anymore. (30:11) What do you do when you missed God’s calling in your life? (40:55) Nick - He speaks to us. If we follow that word from the USCCB, that he surely speaks to us through those readings. We need to be in tune with those around us as well. Daunting task...Lord, this day is Yours. Everyday means something and we need to take each day at a time. Submit, and He'll take us. How do you discern God’s voice from other voices?
