It's Friday, Sep 27th at 10 am in New York. For credit markets, understanding why the Fed is cutting is actually very critical. Unlike typical rate cutting cycles, these cuts are coming when the economic growth is still decelerating but not falling off the cliff. Typically, rate cuts have come in when the economy is already in a recession or approaching recession. Neither is the case this time. So the US expanded by 3 per cent in the second quarter; and the third quarter, it is tracking well over 2 per cent. So, these cuts do not aim to stimulate the economy but really to acknowledge that there's been significant progress on inflation, and move the policy towards a much more normalized policy stance. In some way, this really reflects the Fed's confidence in the inflation path. So that means, not cutting now would mean restraining the economy further through high real interest rates. So, this cut really reflects a growing faith by the Fed in achieving a soft landing. Also, the size of the cut, the 50 basis point cut as opposed to 25 basis points, shows the Fed's willingness to go big in response to weaker data, especially in labor markets. So since the beginning of the year, we have been pretty constructive on spread products across the board, particularly corporate credit and securitized credit, even though valuations have been tightening. Our stance is based on the idea that credit fundamentals will stay reasonably healthy even if economic growth decelerates, as long as it doesn't fall off the cliff. Further, we also believe that credit fundamentals will improve with rate cuts because stress in this cycle has mainly come from higher interest expenses weighing on both corporations and households. This is in stark contrast to other recent periods of stress in credit markets – such as 2008/09 when we had the financial crisis, 2015/16 we had the challenges in the energy sector and then 2020, of course, we faced COVID. So the best point of illustrating this would be through leveraged loans, which are floating-rate instruments. As the Fed started tightening in 2022, we saw increasing pressures on interest coverage ratios for leveraged loan borrowers. That led to a pick-up in downgrades and defaults in loans. As rate hikes ended, we started seeing stabilization of these coverage ratios, and the pace of downgrades and defaults slowed. And now, with rate cutting ahead of us and the dot plot implying 150 basis points more of cuts for the rest of this year and the next year to come, the pressure on interest coverage ratios are going to be easing, especially if the economy stays in soft landing mode. This suggests that while spreads are today tight, the fundamentals could even improve with rate cuts – that means the spreads could remain around these levels, or even tighten a bit further. After all, if you remember the mid-1990s, which was the the last time that the Fed achieved a soft landing, investment grade corporate credit spreads were about 30 basis points tighter relative to where we are today. That 'if' is a big if. If we are wrong on the soft landing thesis, our conviction about the spread products being valuable will prove to have been misplaced. Really the challenge with any landing is that we can't be certain of the prospect until we actually land. Till then, we are really looking at incoming data and hypothesizing: are we heading into a soft or hard landing? So this means incoming data pose two-sided risks to the path ahead for credit spreads. If incoming data are weak – particularly employment data are weak – it is likely that faith in this soft landing construct will dim and spreads could widen. But if they are robust, we can see spreads tightening even further from the current tight levels. Thanks for listening. Most of us have a negative association with the word "faith". To those of us who have escaped from high control religions, the word "faith" implies blind allegiance to a harmful belief systems that creates division and doesn't hold up to the slightest scrutiny. Today, we redefine and reclaim the word faith, and talk about the importance of cultivating your own personal belief system; one which will serve you and help you live a fuller life.  

Mary describes feeling like she lives in a lighthouse, constantly needing to keep the light shining to prevent her daughter from hitting the rocks. This is a powerful analogy for the struggle of parenting a child dealing with addiction. The importance of maintaining faith, praying constantly, and trusting one's instincts as a parent is emphasized. Mary shares how she felt God intervened to prevent her from going to church on a day when her daughter nearly overdosed. Self-care is stressed as crucial, like putting on your own oxygen mask first on an airplane before helping others. Taking care of one's own mental health is key to being able to support a loved one. The first thing we did with the company that makes this podcast, KTF Press, was publish an anthology in 2020 called Keeping the Faith. It had 36 authors writing political theology and personal stories to explain their opposition to Christian support for Donald Trump.Sy Hoekstra: We called it an anthology of dissent, a record of resistance toward the church's political witness in America. And our guests this season are going to be authors from that book, talking about what they wrote and how they're thinking about their faith and the political landscape now.Jonathan Walton: You've heard some of the writers from the book on this show before, like Dani Espiritu, Scott Hall, and Wissam Al-Saliby. And we're excited to bring you Dr. Randy Woodley, Brandi Miller, Mark Scandrette, Rasool Berry, and many more this season. First, we always pay the most attention to marginalized voices, the people who our society oppresses and pushes to the side. We had a whole discussion on this in our very first episode, so if you want to learn more, you can always listen to that. But simply put, The opinions of people who a society favors get the most airtime, but people who a society harms and ignores actually have the clearest insight about the character of that society. And so if you want to understand the world around you better, you have to talk to marginalized people. Plus, God's ministry throughout the Bible is primarily directed toward the poor and oppressed, and his disciples primarily come from them. So you just have to train yourself to learn from people whose perspectives come from that angle on the world if you want to follow Jesus.Jonathan Walton: Another value of ours is trying to be both kind and humane toward people we disagree with, while remaining uncompromising about our own views. We believe, despite all the evidence on the internet to the contrary, that this is in fact possible [Sy chuckles]. But it requires a lot of intentional growth in the area of emotional health, so we talk a lot about that too.Sy Hoekstra: The good thing is, we've been practicing all this for a long time. We have been friends for 18 years now, talking and learning about these subjects together, and having our own sometimes very strong disagreements. We have had to learn how to talk across lines of difference with each other in real time as friends and followers of Jesus. Fortunately, we have been able to do that in communities with friends and mentors who are doing the same thing. In 1829, the abolitionist David Walker published a stunning, poignant appeal to “to the colored citizens of the world.” He urged them to fight against a system of racial slavery and oppression, and to expose that system's moral bankruptcy. Walker's plea has since taken shape in the work of some of America's greatest thinkers, like W.E.B. Du Bois, James Baldwin and Billie Holiday. On this episode redux, a political philosopher reflects on their ideas, their art and their struggles against resignation.

Easter has come and gone...so what's next? That's what I asked a Georgia pastor who's been a faith mentor for me. We also talk on this podcast (make sure to subscribe) about his path to the Lord...5 decades in ministry...a recent tag team sermon with his son on the unlikely...the utter importance of discipleship...how sports can bring people to church...and more. (5:00) Pastor Mike McBride has been in ministry for 49 years, nearly 3 decades of that as a lead pastor of Trinity Temple Assembly of God in Columbus GA, where he married my wife and I, almost 24 years ago. After having high attendance at churches on Easter, it's a great beginning, but it's then a process of spiritual growth. Those instructions can happen at/through churches. (11:20) Before he became a Pastor, Mike first accepted Christ as a young teenager, after a church invite through basketball. Not having a family support system of faith, he was lost again, but listen to his story about a radical change that happened Fathers Day 1971, and how a Bible Study called "Navigators" thrust him even further. Those steps of faith next weren't easy. (22:50) God does not want to be your co-pilot, Mike preached. he explains. How do we let go and trust God? Does it get easier? It can be tough leaving security and following the will of God. In a recent tag team sermon with his son (who's been in ministry 35 years), they told the church about God using the "unlikely" do the impossible. Pastor Mike also talked about the thief turning to the man on the middle Cross...and how we can do the same. Having his family (29:09) be involved in advancing the Kingdom of God is important. Now in his 80s, Mike still enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting (and knows all too well how athletics brings people to Christ), but came out of retirement to be Seniors Pastor at a church in town. (38:00) This pastor defines Discipleship, how Jesus really modeled it for us, being Learners! Without that foundations, emotions rule. Nowadays, churches do this through small groups, life groups(used to be called Sunday School). (46:27) Top athletes and really any of us can use our platform and gifts for God. Part of that journey for Pastor Mike and his wife was both of them surviving cancer. That included 35 straight radiation treatments in his throat.
