This sermon continues our series in Jonah chapter 2. After running from God's call, Jonah finds himself trapped in the dark—buried in distress and unable to save himself. But in that place, he is met by the mercy of God. We explore how Jonah returns to the presence of God, how his prayers are shaped by the Word of God, and how he comes to treasure the grace of God in a new way.Jonah 2 reminds us that even when we flee or feel stuck, grace knows how to find us. If you've been running, drifting, or hiding, this passage calls you to return. To God's presence. To His Word. And to His grace.Key Themes:·Storms of Mercy: God's storms aren't punishment—they're grace. (Jonah 1:17; 2:3)·Prayer in the depths: Jonah's lowest moment becomes his turning point. (Jonah 2:1–2)·Scripture-Shaped Prayer: Jonah prays the Psalms from the deep, reminding us of God's Word in suffering. (Jonah 2:3–7)·Idols and Steadfast Love: When we cling to lesser gods and worship created things, we forfeit the steadfast love of our Creator. (Jonah 2:8)·Salvation Belongs to the Lord: Jonah remembers who saves. Salvation is from the Lord alone. Color: Green Old Testament: Jonah 1:1–17 Psalm: Psalm 96; antiphon: v. 2 Epistle: Romans 13:8–10 Epistle: Romans 8:18–23 Gospel: Matthew 8:23–27 Introit: Psalm 107:1, 8, 24–25; antiphon: vv. 28–29 Gradual: Psalm 102:15–16 Verse: Psalm 97:1 Jesus Is Lord of All Creation In Jonah we see ourselves. For Jonah fled from the presence of the Lord (Jonah 1:1–17) even as we sinners turn our backs on God and go our own way. This brings the storm of God's judgment. But in Jonah we also see Christ. For even as he was in the great fish for three days and three nights, so also Christ Jesus was buried in the depths of death for us and raised on the third day. The Lord of creation, who rules over the wind and the wave (Matt. 8:23–27), saved us from the fury of divine wrath by taking the judgment in His own body. His love is the fulfillment of the Law (Rom. 13:8–10). Though our faith be weak in the face of peril, yet we are kept in safety on the ship of the Church; for the Son of God is with us. Though the whole creation groans with us under the curse, yet by Jesus' speaking, there is a great calm. For we know that our present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glory to be revealed in us (Rom. 8:18–23). Lectionary summary © 2021 The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. We see Jonah in the belly of the fish today, and in this moment, he remembers the Lord. He cries out to the Lord. He turns to Him and remembers His temple, He remembers His goodness, and He remembers that God saves. Salvation is from the Lord. Sometimes, we have to wind up in the belly of the whale before we are broken enough to turn to God. Sometimes, we don't think we need God, that we got it. We must have that myth destroyed. And then sometimes we think, well, I can't turn to God; He won't forgive me. We need that destroyed as well. God hears us, most especially when we are in the belly. Turn to Him, remember Him. And He will salve. Salvation is from the Lord. Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he'll dig a little deeper into Scripture and help you better understand God's Word.If you'd like to receive this daily reflection on your phone, text @39110 to 81010 to sign up. When “the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time,” sending him to preach judgment against the great city of Nineveh, “Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord” (Jonah 3:3). By this preaching, the people were brought to repentance. Because they “believed God,” as He spoke to them through His prophet, “they turned from their evil way” and were spared “the disaster that He had said He would do to them” (Jonah 3:5, 10). St. Paul also warns that “the appointed time has grown very short” (1 Cor. 7:29). Therefore, while we live in this world and deal with it, we are not to cling to it, nor put our trust in it, for “the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Cor. 7:31). Rather, give “your undivided devotion to the Lord” (1 Cor. 7:35). When our Lord Jesus Christ comes and is proclaimed in the Gospel, “the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand” (Mark 1:14–15). Therefore, He still calls men and sends them to become “fishers of men” with the net of that Gospel (Mark 1:17). ----- Trinity Lutheran Church, School and Child Care have been "Making Known the Love of Christ" in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and throughout the world since 1853 as a congregation gathering around God's Word and Sacraments to receive forgiveness and life everlasting. Calling On The Name Of The Lord (Jonah, Part 2) - Pastor DeWayne L. Wright - 08/20/23 by Kingdom Living Ministries
God became a Man in the Person of Jesus Christ. He is God, the Son, and the Son of God. Jesus is the central Person in the Bible, our Saviour and the Source of Eternal Life, and we must believe in Him and come to Him to receive salvation and eternal life (John 5:39-40, 1John 5:11-12). Salvation is of the Lord (Jonah 2:9), and only God can be our Saviour, so if Christ came to save us He must be God. Pastor Derek shares a number of Scriptures in the New Testament, which show that Jesus is fully God as well as fully man, and that believing in His Deity is necessary for salvation. In John 1:1,14, He is introduced as the Eternal Word made flesh, and later Jesus says that we receive eternal life through believing in Him - the God-man (John 3:16, 6:47, 20:31). In Romans 10:9, Paul tells us that those who confess: "Jesus is Lord" from a believing heart are saved. Derek shows that this is a confession of Christ's Deity and our submission to Him. In John 20, Thomas gives us a picture of saving faith, when he worships Jesus saying: "My Lord and my God" (v28). In John 8:58-59, Jesus claimed to be the I AM, and in John 8:24, He said: "If you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” When Jesus claimed to be the Son of God, the Jews tried to stone Him to death, because they knew He was claiming equality with God (John 5:18). His response was to affirm that He should be honoured just as the Father is honoured (v23). In Matthew 16:15-18, Jesus declared that receiving, embracing and confessing this revelation from God that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God is the key to be blessed with forgiveness and eternal life and become part of His true Church, built upon the Rock (Christ Himself). Romans 10:13 says "all who call on the Name of the Lord (Jesus) shall be saved." This is a quote from Joel 2:32, where 'Lord' translates 'Jehovah.' Thus this says Jesus is Jehovah God, and that we are saved through believing and calling upon Him as our Lord God. Thus saving faith must include knowing and submitting to Jesus as our Lord and our God.

-Who can tell--- cried the King of Nineveh , see Jonah 3-9 Salvation can not be demanded, it is the Sovereign gift of God to bestow on all of God's elect who are first born again and made to repent and believe on the Lord for salvation. Salvation is of the Lord Jonah 2-9 Follow the Link.
Commencing a four-part sermon series reflecting on the book of Jonah, we explore how despite Jonah's own prejudices and failings, God is relentless in pursuing him. Because even as the prophet runs, the Lord sends Jonah severe mercies in the form of a great wind, pagan sailors, and a huge fish, all designed to bring Jonah back to God.

Message from Rev. Paul Browne on November 20, 2022
All who trust God in His gospel of promise are guaranteed glory in Christ through the Holy Spirit. This is Paul's main point at the beginning of Romans 5. It speaks thoroughly of New Covenant hope. It also unmistakably extols the triunity of God and emphasizes that “salvation belongs to the LORD” (Jonah 2:9). As the saved sinner's only boast is in God, so his final certainty of future glory rests in God, whom he trusts. This section begins by celebrating the consequences of justification and exulting in God as the one who guarantees our future glory.
This week we'll be studying a combination of Jonah 2:1-10 under the theme of "Jonah Prays to God." Having run away from God and God's will as central to his life...having endured a self-inflicted storm that threatened the existence of everyone in his boat...and having been thrown overboard to experience the chaotic rock bottom of the sea, Jonah is finally ready to pray to God. Sometimes it takes a lot for us to truly open up to God. Experiencing our failures and God's undeserved goodness certainly helps.

The Gospel proclaims that God became a man in the Person of Jesus Christ in order to save us. Jesus Christ is not just a man, but he is fully God, He is God the Son, the second Person of the Trinity, and because He is God, He is worthy of our full devotion, our absolute love and loyalty, the total submission of our heart and life, our wholehearted worship and service. The Deity of Christ is expressed by the main Christian Confession: “Jesus is LORD” (Romans 10:9). This confession expresses our personal submission to Jesus as our Lord and God (John 20:28). It is essential for our salvation to know and believe that Jesus is both fully GOD and fully MAN, because believing in the TRUE JESUS is the KEY to receiving ETERNAL LIFE. The Deity of Christ is the foundational truth that Jesus emphasised in Matthew 16, when He announced the formation of His Church, saying that this is the key revelation that was required for any man to be blessed with eternal life and to become part of His Church. It was necessary for the Messiah to be God, for His mission was to be the SAVIOUR of mankind, saving us from the dominion of sin, death and hell, and the Bible is clear that ONLY GOD can be our SAVIOUR (Isaiah 43:11): “SALVATION is of the LORD” (Jonah 2:9). The Messianic Prophecies in the Old Testament consistently speak of the Coming Messiah as being both GOD and MAN (the unique God-man). Therefore, when Jesus claimed to be both God and man, He was claiming to be the fulfilment of these Prophecies. Therefore, the New Testament is perfectly consistent with the Old Testament revelation, and it proclaims that all these Prophecies were fulfilled in Jesus Christ. After introducing this subject, we study a number of these God-man Prophecies, and in the next video in this Series, we will go on to study even more of these most important Prophecies.
