I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth. Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD. (Jeremiah 31:18-20) 1/ The cause of Ephraim bemoaning himself - Only chastisement but no more than that. 2/ Ephraim's prayer arising from his concern - turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God. 3/ Prayer answered and the effect felt by Ephraim. (v19) 4/ The LORD's word concerning turned Ephraim. (v20) **Sermon summary:** The sermon centers on Jeremiah 31:18–20, The passage unfolds a divine progression: from the painful awareness of rebellion under God's discipline, to a humble plea for divine turning, to the transformative effects of repentance, shame, and instruction, culminating in the sovereign promise of mercy. The preacher teaches that God's chastening, though grievous, is never arbitrary but rooted in covenant love, and that the ultimate assurance is not in human merit, but in God's unchanging mercy—revealed most fully in Christ, who bears the cost of sin and grants repentance and salvation. God's mercy is sure, not earned, but freely given to those who, like Ephraim, are brought to the end of themselves.

The Scriptures explain that there is a reason why God corrects us. It is ultimately for our own good!  This is a rebroadcast of a podcast originally recorded on September 8, 2021. This year, the commemoration of the Fast of Gedaliah begins at sunset on September 24,  2025. Living under grace as believers means we're God's children. As our heavenly Father, He loves us enough to chasten and correct us as needed. It's painful while we're going through it, but it's not punishment; chastening is a sign that we're God's son or daughter. It's God's way of dealing with our sins but doing so in love. We're unlike the unsaved world that doesn't know Jesus and therefore doesn't undergo the chastening process; we therefore can rejoice when we undergo it. Introduction Pastor Tommy reflects on Jonah's story, particularly the contrast between his initial disobedience and the second chance he received. Pastor Tommy expresses concern over Jonah's attitude in chapter 4, even after experiencing God's grace and witnessing the revival in Nineveh. Pastor Tommy warns against letting the devil take one back to a despondent, backslidden condition. Chastening is meant to grow and help individuals become better servants of God. The Second Chance The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time (Jonah 3:1-3). God's intent was for Jonah to preach to Nineveh, demonstrated by the miracles to ensure Jonah reached the city. While humans have free will, God ultimately controls their destiny. Many figures in the Bible received second chances after messing up, but some, like Ananias and Sapphira, did not. Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Ghost and died the same day. The God of Second Chances If one receives a second chance, it is by God's grace. David's sin with Bathsheba was forgiven after repentance, but consequences remained. The child born of Bathsheba died. The sword never departed from David's house. Grace makes second chances possible, as seen when God prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah and bring him back to Nineveh. Grace and Reconciliation Jonah likely reconciled with God in the belly of the fish. Jonah realized he would not die in the fish and chose to align with God's will. It is better to willingly follow God's will than to resist and face chastening. The Goal of a Second Chance When God gives a second chance, one should seize it and fulfill God's purpose. There is a goal in second chances. Some individuals hold back from God, attempting to negotiate their obedience. God is interested in His will being done, not in negotiations. Jonah arose and went to Nineveh without delay, demonstrating obedience. He didn't wait to clean himself up after being spit out by the whale. Disqualifying oneself through continued resistance can lead to being taken home early. Jeremiah could not resist God's call, experiencing it as a fire shut up in his bones. Paul's conversion demonstrated the futility of resisting God's will. The Gift of a Second Chance Jonah preached an eight-word message: "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown" (Jonah 3:4). The people of Nineveh believed God, despite the message lacking hope or promise. The Ninevites proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The king urged everyone to cry mightily unto God, in the hope that He might turn from His fierce anger. God heard them from heaven and saved the whole city. Jonah, however, did not care that they received the gift of salvation. Jonah camped on a hill to watch and see if God would actually save the people. The revival in Nineveh was extraordinary, achieved through a simple message and a reluctant preacher. One should learn from past mistakes and recognize the gift God offers in a second chance. Jonah's Unresolved Ending Jonah's heart reverted to its original state, as seen in chapter 4. Twice in chapter 4, Jonah expresses a desire to die. The book ends with God questioning Jonah's compassion for a gourd versus His compassion for Nineveh (Jonah 4:10-11). Jonah never answered God's question, leaving the story unresolved. Pastor Tommy emphasizes the importance of minding God and recognizing His sovereignty. Conclusion The story of Jonah serves as a warning. Second chances come with grace, a required response of obedience, and the potential for reward. There is a blessing from obeying God, even on the second attempt. Jonah missed the opportunity to witness and rejoice in the salvation of thousands. Pastor Tommy urges listeners to heed the warning in the book of Jonah and ensure their lives do not end with a question mark.

Jonah's Disobedience and God's Mercy The Book of Jonah is about the chastening and mercies of God, highlighting the terrifying and comforting truth of Him. Jonah resisted God's command to preach to Nineveh because he wanted God to destroy them, as they were against Jerusalem. Jonah knew that God was merciful and might spare Nineveh if they repented, so he decided to do his own thing. "The first mistake we make is when we disobey God. When God's Word has been clear in our lives. And when we begin to look another direction and see a different picture. We begin to do our own thing." God's Chastening and Restoration God's chastening of Jonah was also a restoration, as Jonah was rejecting God's sovereignty, will, and purpose, just like the people of Nineveh. Even in a horrible, miraculous place like the belly of the fish, Jonah recognized that God was keeping him alive and that God wasn't finished with him. "When they throwed him overboard. What he found waiting on him was an ark of salvation. And when that fish swallowed him down. Brother Jonah realized. God ain't done with me." Pastor Tommy expresses gratitude for God's chastening hand, which proves God's love. "Thank God for the chastening hand. For the times when He's taken us when we should have. Lord, God had every right to cast us away...which is merciful and gracious and kind." The Book of Jonah is a warning to obey and serve God. "If you think for one minute you're going to get away with anything you're wrong." God deals with people differently, some with a snap of the fingers, others with a stern word, and some, like Jonah, who are more hard-headed. God's Sovereignty and Love God is sovereign and in control, and He will get what He wants out of you. "He don't need your advice nor your opinion. He knows exactly what he wants out of you. And let me give you some news. He'll get it." God could have given up on Jonah, but He loved him and made a way for him to escape from the impossible situation. God will chase and strip away the blinders of sin to bring His children back to Him. "He'll chase you. He'll chase in you. He'll strip from your eyes the blinders of your sin. And He'll get you to the place that you're ready and willing to serve Him again." The Book of Jonah is an encouragement that God will deliver His people and not be resisted. "People throughout all the history of mankind have read about this man who resisted the will of God only to find out that God will not be resisted amen." Once you are God's, you are not your own anymore, and He will continue to work on His children. God's Love for Backsliding Children God's multiple miracles and mercy toward Jonah remind us that there is no limit to God's love toward His backsliding children. "You see, God loves us. He don't just love them that are good. But He loves them that are trying to be bad." Even when Jonah despised God's word and was willing to die rather than obey, God was already working on his behalf. "Jonah may be in a place where he has despondent, where he has become the enemy of God, but the very minute they throwed him over that ship, what Jonah didn't know was that God was already working." God had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah and take him to the bottom of the ocean until He was done doing business with him. God loves His children and will help them if they obey Him. "And He'll help you if you'll obey Him." Everyone has their own "fish" experience where God takes them down to accomplish His will. "Likely everybody in here that's been saved for any amount of time, you've got your own fish somewhere. You've got your own experience that you can speak of where God took you down." The Pearl of Wisdom in Jonah 2:8 Verse 8 of Jonah chapter 2 contains a pearl of wisdom and the summary of the entire book: "Those that observe lying van...

Heaven's Counsel for the Church: Prophecy for a Purified PeopleThis episode continues the prophecy series with a focus on how God speaks today—personally and precisely to His people, the Church. The message traces God's shift from national dealings with Israel to individual counsel for believers, showing how prophecy is meant to transform, not just inform. The speaker highlights that understanding prophecy requires purity, humility, and submission to Christ, drawing parallels to Daniel's example. Biblical prophecy, especially in Daniel and Revelation, reveals God's heart for intimacy and prepares believers for the trials ahead. Israel's geopolitical role is examined alongside the Church's spiritual calling to remain unstained by the world.

We examine what it means to run the race with patience, how the Bible defines chastening, and whether it is correction or punishment. The discussion also touches on church hurt, fellowship challenges, and how personal experiences shape spiritual growth. Throughout, we reflect on the example of Christ, the importance of pressing forward in the faith, and how believers respond when confronted with trials, conviction, or sin. Everything is weighed directly against the Bible.

We do not attend church merely out of tradition or to receive an emotional fix. Instead, we gather to reprogram our minds with the thought patterns of Christ. Two verses form the cornerstone of our Pastor's life: "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly… But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night" (Psalm 1:1–2). To avoid ungodly counsel, we must become students of the Word—ready to apply it whenever it is needed, empowering us with wisdom and discernment.

Deciding to follow God and stay the course requires endurance. Endure means to “suffer something painful or difficult, patiently.” The Bible's definition is “to bear up under hardship, to withstand adversity or persecution.” The most powerful picture of endurance is recorded in Hebrews 12:1-3. “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the Joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews then leads us into a discussion about “not despising the chastening of the LORD.” To chasten means to correct. So many times, we are offended by correction, finding fault with the one who brings it. Correction is part of our perfection. It is part of what God is using to perfect that which concerns us (Ps. 138:8),  but if we resist it or take it personally, we will miss the benefit of the chastening. Jesus will chasten you until you lay down that weight or sin you refuse to lay down. His chastening is not because He's against you but rather because He's for you. He wants you to run your “faith race” with endurance. The chastening of the Lord is not the same as punishment. It's a word that means discipline and correction. As God's children, Jesus took all our punishment for all our sins. As a born-again child of God, He doesn't punish you for sin but rather disciplines you for it. The evidence you are truly God's child is that He convicts you and corrects you for sin. But conviction is different than guilt. Guilt, condemnation, and shame are from the Devil. Conviction and chastening are from God. How should we respond to the chastening of the Lord? 1.) With humility and submission. 2.) By trusting God loves me and is for me. In times of chastening, God wants to empty us of ourselves and fill us up with Him. The pain is for our gain! The abundant life is the obedient life. The Lord's chastening is painful, but it leads to a life that is peaceful. Join Pastor Phil Hopper as he shares what Hebrews 12 tells us about the chastening of the Lord.
