Away From the Presence Jonah 1:1-16 Message Slides For the bulletin in PDF form, click here. God is Present EverywhereWe Forget to Live Like God is Present EverywhereGod is Gracious and Merciful, Slow to Anger, and Abounding in Steadfast LoveDiscussion Questions1. The main lesson we learn is that God is present everywhere. Yet there are some places we would probably prefer not to go (even if God is with us). Where would you least/most want to be if you were alone: in the ocean, on a mountain, or in space? Any other places?2. Jonah tries to flee from the presence of the Lord (1:2-3), but he is unable because God is present everywhere. What are some indications in the book that reveal God is present everywhere?3. Do you have any challenges with thinking about God being present everywhere? Is this a difficult or a relatively simple concept for you? Explain.4. Have someone read Psalm 139:7-10. This passage talks about God being present everywhere and how this should encourage us. Why should we be encouraged by the idea that God is present everywhere? Have you ever been especially encouraged by this truth?5. The idea that God is present everywhere can also be humbling. Explain why. Have you ever been convicted by the thought that God is present everywhere and knows everything we do and everything we think?6. Explain how Jonah can have correct thinking in 1:9 that God is present everywhere and yet he tries to flee from God's presence. How can his thinking and living be inconsistent? What are some ways your thinking and living can be inconsistent?7. The story is ultimately about God's grace shown to Nineveh but also shown to Jonah. What are some ways we see God's grace toward Jonah in this story? What are some lessons we might apply to our lives from this?8. Jesus thinks of the story of Jonah as pointing to Him when he says, “something greater than Jonah is here” (Matt 12:41). What are some examples of how Jesus succeeds where Jonah fails? How is Jesus greater than Jonah? Why should this encourage us today?Mission Highlight - Pray for the Unreached: The Montgomery Family On Friday, March 28th, Southeast Asia experienced an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude. The Montgomery family is safe and experienced no damage, though they did feel it. Justin, Angela, Zeke, and Taos ask that we join them in praying for those effected by the earthquake. The death toll is over 1,700. During this time of loss and uncertainty, pray that people look for hope and peace in Jesus.FinancesWeekly Budget 35,297Giving For 03/23 30,039Giving For 03/30 18,053YTD Budget 1,376,589Giving 1,346,687 OVER/(UNDER) (29,902) Silent Auction | Today, 4-6:00 p.m.The Fellowship Youth and College Mission Teams invite you to a Silent Auction Fundraiser today!!

I am appalled to see how much of the change which I thought I had undergone lately was only imaginary. The real work seems still to be done. An inventor of a memory management device realizes his invention is showing him a memory he hasn't experienced, a dangerous memory. Genre: Mystery, Science Fiction   Excerpt: “Memories are unreliable…” Max paused, hesitated actually. He'd rehearsed aloud what he was going to say so many times— despite not needing to remember the words— that he'd fooled himself into believing it all sounded reasonable. But now, he was about to say the words out loud to another person, the most critical person he could possibly tell his truth to..   What story or stories am I revisiting in this episode? Each Season 8 episode is a standalone story, but it's connected to or inspired by a previous story through a character, a place, an object, a concept, a continuation of events (ahem, sequel), and so on. This story is inspired by the Season 4 episode, "My Homunculus Is Malfunctioning." I am again revisiting a theme or idea rather than the specifics of a previous story. Inventions, even when they do what they are invented and expected to do, sometimes have unintended effects. Some of those effects may be minor. Some major. The stakes get even higher when that invention is meant to directly affect the human body.  And trickier when the part of the human body they affect is the mind.    MERCH!Interested in merch, like mugs and notebooks, featuring my artwork? Knowing Christ means I have a new identity (vv.1-6) Knowing Christ means I have new values (vv.7-11) Justification - Righteousness (v.9) Sanctification - Power (v.10) Glorification - Hope (v.11) Home Church Questions1. Our passage is about knowing Christ. How would you explain to someone what it means to know Christ? What are some ways knowing Jesus is similar/different from other relationships we have? 2. In Phil 3:1-6, we learn that knowing Christ means we have a new identity. How should a person's identity change when he/she comes to know Christ? What are some ways a person's identity might stay the same? What has this looked like for you? 3. In vv.5-6, Paul gives a list of reasons why he would have more reason for confidence in the flesh than others. If you were to have confidence in the flesh, what are some items that would be on your list? Do you wrestle with putting too much confidence in the flesh? Explain. 4. In Phil 3:7-11, we learn that knowing Christ means we have new values. In vv.7-8, he says the things he used to consider as gain he now considers as loss. What are some of the “gains” in your life that you consider to be valuable? Are there any “gains” in your life you should re-evaluate so that you value them in a healthier way? 5. Paul says he considers everything as loss compared with the surpassing value of knowing Christ (v.8). What does he mean and how can he say this? Can you say this? 6. Jesus has surpassing worth because we can be justified and made right with God through Him (v.9). Was there a time in your life when you were moved by this truth that God provides the righteousness He demands? 7. Jesus has surpassing worth because we can experience the power of his resurrection even in our sufferings (v.10). How can we identify with Jesus when we suffer so we experience this power? Have you experienced this? 8. Jesus has surpassing worth because we experience the hope of future resurrection through Him (v.11). Why does having this hope of future glorification motivate us to value Jesus now? Pray for the Unreached: The Ansari are a Sunni Muslim group in India, historically weavers and textile sellers, now involved in various businesses. Many live in poverty and face illiteracy, though some have contributed to education and politics. Known for their hospitality, they offer opportunities for believers to share the gospel. Recent efforts have seen some Ansari families come to Christ, but they remain largely unreached. Pray for Indian believers to reach out with love and share the gospel with Ansari families and leaders, revealing to them the love and hope only offered through Christ.FinancesWeekly Budget 35,297Giving For 02/09 36,524Giving For 02/16 19,506YTD Budget 1,164,806Giving 1,152,806 OVER/(UNDER) (12,000)Men's Muster 2025 A car out of alignment is harder to steer, wears down faster, and wastes fuel. What aspect of Operation Christmas Child do you appreciate? Why? 2. We looked at the storyline of the Bible and discovered our God is a missionary God from the beginning to the end. Missions isn't just one aspect; it is at the very heart of Who He is and what He does. Is this a new idea to you? Explain. 3. We looked at several passages to help tell the story of the Bible (see the sermon outline). Did one or two of these passages stand out to you? How does that passage relate to the bigger story of our missionary God? 4. What are some ways we should be impacted when we consider that God's heart for missions is good news for us? In other words, when we realize we are among the “nations” and Jesus was sent as our Savior, how should we respond? 5. When we realize missions is at the heart of Who God is and what He does, we should be impacted so that missions becomes central to who we are and what we do. Would you say missions is merely one aspect of your life, or is missions at the heart of who you are? Explain. 6. How could missions become more central to your life? What next steps can you and your Home Church take so missions becomes more central to who we are and what we do? (For example, we have been including a “Mission Highlight” at the bottom of the discussion questions. Your Home Church can spend some time reading this and praying.)Mission Highlight - Pray for the Unreached: The Hui in China The Hui people of China, numbering around 13.7 million, are primarily Sunni Muslims with roots tracing back to Arab, Persian, Mongol, and Chinese ancestors. They speak Mandarin with some Arabic and Persian influences and are spread across nearly all of China's counties, known for their skills in business and various trades. Despite widespread persecution of Uyghur Muslims by the Chinese Communist Party, the Hui have not faced the same level of oppression. There are no known gospel movements among the Hui, with less than 0.1% identifying as Christians. An estimated 275 workers are needed, at a ratio of 1 worker per 50,000 people. Prayers focus on opportunities for outreach, spiritual conviction, and a desire for Jesus among Hui families, with the hope that they would embrace Christ and share the gospel across their communities. Thursday - Luke 13•. Friday - Luke 14Home Church Questions1. Have you ever been in a situation where a “Good Samaritan” has helped you? Explain.2. Have someone read the parable in Luke 10:30-37 and summarize the story. How does this story relate to Luke 10:25-29? 3. In Jesus' story, a Samaritan is the hero. His audience would not have considered Samaritans to be heroes. Why does he involve a Samaritan as a hero? 4. One point of the story is there are no limits to “who is my neighbor.” We all have people in our lives and it's fairly easy to be a good neighbor to them. Who are some of the people in our lives who are not as easy to relate to as a neighbor? Explain.5. Why should we be a good neighbor even to those we don't want to be? What might this look like for you to be a good neighbor to someone this week?6. A second point of this parable is there are no limits to how far I should go to be a neighbor. What are some examples from the parable of the extent to which this Good Samaritan was willing to go to be a good neighbor?7. Have you ever been in a situation where you have been a “Good Samaritan?” To what extent did you go to be a good neighbor? How far should we go?8. This parable is about being a good neighbor like the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:37). But the context around the parable is also about Jesus (see Luke 10:22-23 and 10:38-42). How has Jesus been like a “Good Samaritan” to us? Why would we be more likely to be a good neighbor to others when we consider what Jesus has done for us?Mission Highlight - Pray for the Unreached: The Najdi Arabs in Saudi Arabia The Najdi-speaking Arabs, with a population of approximately 14.7 million, primarily reside on Saudi Arabia's central plateau and speak the Najdi dialect of Arabic. Islam is the dominant religion, and Christianity makes up less than 0.1% of the population. The complete Bible is unavailable, with only portions of Scripture accessible in written and oral form, and no gospel movements have been reported. An estimated 293 workers are needed, at a ratio of 1 worker per 50,000 people. Pray that Najdi families experience encounters that result in their knowledge of Jesus and for protection of Muslim families who have a desire to study God's word but are fearful what may happen if they do. Wednesday - Romans 13:1-7•. Thursday - 1 Timothy 2:1-4•. Friday - Philippians 3:20-21Home Church Questions1. Have someone read Matthew 22:15-22. The goal of the two groups was to trap Jesus. Why would this question about paying taxes potentially be a trap?2. What is the meaning of Jesus' answer to their question. Why does He answer this way?3. This passage suggests a distinction between the Roman government and God. It was mentioned in the sermon that some governments have not recognized a distinction between the church and government. What are some of the negative consequences that can occur when there is no distinction between these two spheres? For example, why would it be a problem if the state tried to force someone to convert to a particular religion?4. In an ideal situation, what should Christians expect of government? What is the responsibility of the government to the church?5. While the government has responsibilities to the church, we have responsibilities to the state. First, we are supposed to be salt and light (have someone read Matthew 5:13-16). Why is it important that we are being transformed by the Gospel and becoming more like Christ in order to have an impact as salt and light wherever we live? What are some ways you are representing Christ to the people in your neighborhood, your workplace, your school, your team?6. Second, we also have certain responsibilities to obey the government God has placed over us (see 1 Tim 2:1-3 and Romans 13:1-6). Why is it important for Christians to be diligent to obey the laws?7. Third, we live under a government in which we can have an influence on policies and laws. What are some ways we can have an influence and why should we try to have an influence?8. Philippians 3:20-21 reminds us our ultimate citizenship is in heaven. If we truly believe this, how should this impact how we live as citizens in Conway? Mission Highlight - Pray for the Unreached: The Northern Uzbek in Uzbekistan Uzbekistan has a population of 27.5 million, with Islam as the main religion and Uzbek as the primary language. Christians make up less than 0.1% of the population. While the complete Bible is available in both written and oral form, no movement of the gospel has been reported. The lessons we learn from this parable help explain the Christian worldview. What is a worldview? Why is it important we understand what a worldview is?3. The first question that informs our worldview is: “how did we get here?” How does the Christian worldview explain how we got here and what are some examples of other worldviews that would answer this question differently? What difference should this make in our lives?4. The second question that informs our worldview is: “what is wrong?” In the parable, the enemy sows weeds in the good field. According to the Christian worldview, what is wrong? What is an example of a way you are experiencing the "weeds" of this broken world?5. The third question that informs our worldview is: “why are we here?” The Christian worldview says there is still meaning and purpose even though we live in a fallen world. What is the meaning/purpose of life according to the Christian worldview? What difference should this make in our lives?6. What are some reasons God allows us to remain in a fallen world with pain and suffering and weeds? How might your answer help you respond to the “weeds” you are experiencing right now?7. What difference should this make in our lives?8. Who can you talk with about these big questions in hopes of talking about the Gospel? The hosts also review new albums from Common and Jack White. --Join our Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3sivr9TBecome a member on Patreon: https://bit.ly/3slWZvcSign up for our newsletter: https://bit.ly/3eEvRnGMake a donation via PayPal: https://bit.ly/3dmt9lUSend us a Voice Memo: Desktop: bit.ly/2RyD5Ah Mobile: sayhi.chat/soundops--Featured Songs:Common and Pete Rock, "Dreamin'," The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Loma Vista, 2024Common and Pete Rock, "When The Sun Shines Again," The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Loma Vista, 2024Common and Pete Rock, "This Man," The Auditorium, Vol. 1, Loma Vista, 2024Jack White, "Old Scratch Blues," No Name, Third Man, 2024Jack White, "Archbishop Harold Holmes," No Name, Third Man, 2024Jack White, "Bless Yourself," No Name, Third Man, 2024Lou Reed, "Walk On The Wild Side," Transformer, RCA, 1972Lou Reed, "Coney Island Baby," Coney Island Baby, RCA, 1976Lou Reed and John Cale, "Images," Songs For Drella, Sire, 1990Lou Reed, "The Power of Positive Drinking," Growing Up in Public, Arista, 1980Lou Reed, "Egg Cream," Set the Twilight Reeling, Warner Bros., 1996Lou Reed, "Like A Possum," Ecstasy, Reprise, 2000Lou Reed, "Pale Blue Eyes (Live)," Take No Prisoners, Arista, 1978Luna, "Tiger Lilly," Bewitched, Elektra, 1994Lou Reed, "Edgar Allan Poe," The Raven, Sire, 2003Lou Reed, "Halloween Parade," New York, Sire, 1989Prince and the Revolution, "Purple Rain," Purple Rain, Warner Bros., 1984See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
