Close the Door: Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast
Spoilers, profanity, Jaime x Brienne. We find new and creative ways to say “Ugh, Theon, no!” as he finds more kids to potentially murder. Wex shames everyone into being brave, but no one thinks trying to hold Winterfell is a good idea. Theon, we know you were a hostage but listen to Maester Luwin, or your sister, or ANYONE, ffs... Anyway, Theon, you suck (but admittedly Ramsay sucks more). Bonus: Devan gives his thoughts on the new Dragon Show—can he talk Guile into podcasting about House of the Dragon? Finally, we all wonder how Matt Smith didn't know what he was getting himself into. A Song of Ice and Fire. A Clash of Kings - Theon VI. Close The Door And Come Here - Episode 445

Bran and company are hiding in the crypts of Winterfell. They venture out to find the castle destroyed and Maester Luwin mortally wounded. Mackelly and Simon sort through the debris.Chapter Review:Bran Stark sees and smells the destruction of Winterfell through the eyes of Summer. He's been in wolf form for three days, but Osha, Hodor, Rickon and the Reeds are waiting for, and on, him in the crypts beneath Winterfell. With what he's learned, the party decides to venture forth - they need food anyway.Only Hodor has the strength to move the door which is blocked by rubble. The destruction is wanton and considerable: horses, dogs, and people lie dead everywhere. Bran blames Theon Greyjoy, but Osha suspects that the "Squid Prince" might have been a victim here too. Rickon doesn't recognize it as his home. But he does recognize the direwolves who come trotting up. The wolves scent something and head for the Godswood. There they find Maester Luwin on the edge of death. He counsels Osha to split the boys up. Take Rickon to the King's Road and Bran to the Wall. Learned Hands: The Official Podcast of the Westerosi Bar Association
In this twenty-seventh episode of Learned Hands, the Official Podcast of the Westerosi Bar Association, Maester Merry, Clint, and Special Guest Hand Don Zeko ask: What does GRRM's portrayal of the Wall reveal about the values that motivate criminal law in Westeros and how does it compare and contrast with other forms of punishment? Our analysis this week includes:We take the focus away from liability and into punishment, for once.Superhero Public Defender Don Zeko schools us on theories of Westerosi punishment.A great debate ensues about who is eligible to take the black.Merry quotes The Expanse in an extremely relevant way.Clint talks about the 8th Amendment, for fun.No one says good things about Nino.A judgment is passed on whether the opportunity to take the black is good or bad or neutral.Learned Hands pays respect to Maester Luwin, the greatest law professor in Westeros. We also talk about Theon. Did I tell you that every scene in the series has a double or a triplet? Well, here's one of those doubles--Catelyn Two is the double of the Prologue. If we agree that the series is about the problem of the eyes, about Joyce's parallax and the ineluctable modality of the eyes, and about Plato's cave and how we perceive reality through our eyes, then George has to keep hitting that theme. Beyond the point-of-view structure, GRRM has to create doubles and triplets to cultivate our dragonfly eyes, to give us different views of the same problem--same issue, same concerns, but different characters, different setting. This is essentially George offering us a lesson in close literary reading, an early chapter, an early chance to cultivate and stretch our literary analytical muscles. And if you don't believe me, ask George himself--in this very chapter, the author peers out from the text and tells us to read his novel allegorically. He has Maester Luwin tell us to look through different lenses, that "there's more to this than the seeming," and how the "true message [is] concealed within." George could not make it any more explicit. This is comparable to Dante's admonition in Canto IX of the Inferno to "look beneath the veil of my verse." But in contrast to the Prologue, which ends with the Others intruding on Waymar Royce's false reality, this chapter has no such revelatory moment--we are left with the undeniable sense that something is amiss here, but with no obvious resolution to that tension. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/glen-reed/message

The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
The sea has come to Winterfell. Bran is forced to cede the seat of House Stark to Theon Greyjoy. Mikken the smith is killed and Hodor beaten. Meanwhile, Theon assures all that they'll be treated kindly as long as they follow orders. Simon and Mackelly smell something fishy. Chapter Review: Bran has an extended wolf-dream in which Summer tries to escape the walled godswood. The wolf has no inclination to climb, but his Bran-half leads him up a tree. Summer slips and falls. On impact, Bran awakens to a pain in his shoulder. He hopes Summer is OK. A stranger enters Bran's room followed by Theon Greyjoy. Theon tells Bran to come down and inform the citizens of their new ruler. Bran, Rickon, Maester Luwin, the Walders, and the Reeds, are brought to the main hall. The 30 or so Iron Islanders have gathered the other citizens of Winterfell. Hayhead has a nasty wound, Alebelly has been killed, and Palla (who played with Bran and the Walders in the godswood) has been raped. Theon demands obedience, but Mikken the smith is having none of it. He spits vitriol at Theon until a spear is thrust through his neck and he drowns on his own blood. Fulfilling more of Jojen Reed's prophetic dream. Hodor wails in dismay at Mikken's death and is beaten by Theon's men. All the while Theon claims that the people will find him a fair and gentle lord. The prisoner Reek and Osha both pledge fealty to Theon and are given their freedom. Bran sees the second of these as quite the betrayal, although less than Theon's. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Maester Luwin brings a late night message.
The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran enjoys the Reeds' company. Jojen reveals that he has the greensight allowing him to dream of the future. He offers to trade dreams with Bran. Things get tense and Summer threatens the Reeds. They avoid the wolves and later Meera shares another of Jojen's dreams with Bran. Mackelly and Simon have a go at oneirocriticism. Chapter Review: Brandon Stark is enjoying the company of Meera and Jojen Reed. The other northern dignitaries have left, and the three are frolicking with Summer in the Godswood. Meera shows her skill with trident and net. Bran shows off his and Summer's circus-stunts. Jojen reveals that he has the greensight: his dreams are prophecies. Bran wants to know his future, but Jojen wants to hear about Bran's own dreams. Jojen knows a surprising amount already. The three-eyed raven has visited him since he nearly succumbed to a fever as a child. Jojen's dream is of a winged-wolf shackled to earth by stone chains, that the raven cannot cut. Jojen knows that Bran can inhabit Summer, but this all gets too close to home for Bran. Summer, and later Shaggydog, attack the Reeds, who are lucky to be good tree-climbers. We learn that Roose Bolton's bastard son has kidnapped and married the widow Hornwood. This has been countered by Lord Manderly occupying the Hornwood lands and castles. Ser Rodrik has gone to knock some heads together. Maester Luwin dismisses greensight as a forgotten fable, that if it ever existed, is long gone. His own experiments with magic proved (to him) that it doesn't exist. Bran is relieved and disappointed. If magic did exist he could still hope for a cure to his paralysis. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Brandon (Bran) Stark - Middle son of Eddard (Ned) and Catelyn (Cat) Stark. He was pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister and lost the use of his legs. Maester Luwin - A maester in the service of house Stark at Winterfell. Big Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Little Walder Frey - Grandson of Lord Walder Frey. Ward of Winterfell. Osha - Wildling captured by the Starks now held as servant/prisoner in Winterfell. Ser Rodrik Cassel - Master-at-arms of Winterfell. Aging knight who accompanied Cat on her journey to King's Landing. Now castellan of Winterfell. Lady Donella Hornwood - Lost her son and husband in the Riverlands fighting for Robb. Beyond child-bearing age, she is in demand by greedy suitors. Wyman Manderly - Overweight Lord of White Harbor. Too large to fight with Robb, he wants to build a navy and the royal mint for his new king. Meera Reed - Sixteen-year-old daughter of Howland Reed. Jojen Reed - Thirteen-year-old son of Howland Reed. Bran, as the Stark in Winterfell, must welcome and entertain a succession of Northern nobility as they come to petition for favors and to vie for the hand of the recently widowed Donella Hornwood (who happens to be the Lady of a large tract of valuable land). He's not thrilled, but Simon and Mackelly are.Chapter Review:Bran Stark and Hodor watch the young nobles, squires, and pages practicing in the yard. The Freys come over and verbally abuse Hodor, who is unaffected by their cruelty, but Bran isn't. Maester Luwin intervenes before things get heated.Bran, Luwin, and Ser Rodrik Cassel host representatives of houses: Manderly, Hornwood, Umber, Glover, Tallhart, and Cerwyn. They all want something, and all have a plan for Lady Hornwood's hand. Her own plan seems to involve Ser Rodrik to the amusement of Maester Luwin. What's within their power is granted, but most serious matters (including Lady Hornwood) are deferred until King Robb can decide. Lady Hornwood is troubled by what Roose Bolton's bastard and presumed heir is up to in the Dreadfort. As should we all.Cley Cerwyn mentions Stannis' accusation that Joffrey is the product of incest and none other than the Kingslayer's son. This discombobulates Bran. That night he dreams of the raven who pecks open a third eye for Bran through which he sees a blonde man pushing him to his doom. Bran and Rickon both dream that their father visits them in the crypts. Maester Luwin tries to reassure them that dreams are just dreams. Osha is not so sure, especially when a raven arrives with news from King's Landing. Simon and Mac examine the dark words. Chapter Review: Bran Stark and maester Luwin watch the remnants of the north being trained by Ser Rodrick Cassel. They don't look great. Bran wants to visit the crypts, but Hodor won't go down there. He explains to Luwin that last night he dreamt he talked to his father down there. They agree to visit, with Osha taking the Hodor role. Bran talks Osha through the family history as they walk past his ancestors, she's a little bit impressed. When they reach Ned's waiting tomb, they are attacked by Shaggydog. Luwin receives a nasty cut, and both Summer and Shaggy are bloodied by the time Rickon calls off the fight. He too has dreamt of his father in the crypts. They return to Luwin's tower to patch him up and continue the lessons in history and dreams versus reality. Suddenly the wolves howl as a battered looking raven lands on the ledge. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Bran watches the Karstarks arrive at Winterfell. He talks to Osha, who warns him of the Others and assures him that the danger to their safety is not from King's Landing, but from north of the Wall. Nevertheless, the Stark banners head south to defend the Riverlands and hopefully rescue Ned. The boys try to see things through Bran's eyes (all three of them). Chapter Review: Bran watches as the Karstarks swell the numbers at Winterfell to 12,000 soldiers. Robb's headed south to protect the Riverlands, find his mom, and hopefully rescue his father and sisters from the clutches of Queen Cersei. This despite receiving word from Sansa that Robb and their mother should could to King's Landing and bend the knee. In the Godswood with Hodor's, Bran encounters Osha the wildling. She assures Bran that Robb and his army should be heading north. Whatever his concern is with the south, it's nothing compared to what's coming from the north. Bran promises to convince Robb. But he doesn't get the chance. Robb is busy convincing the hard northern Lords to follow a green boy of summer, with some help from Grey Wind. Bran confides in Maester Luwin, but the old man assures Bran that Osha's stories are fanciful. A couple of days later the armies head south, leaving Bran in charge of Winterfell. In the last episode of A Clash of Kings and the last episode of TIGBAB Season 3, Raven travels back in time and completely ruins the podcast. We kick off this episode by comparing our epic weekends and crying about an upcoming surgery. And, in A Clash of Kings, we tremble at Tyrion's living nightmare, Raven fails so hard it's sad, Jon comes face to face with the wildlings, we completely wing a chapter summary for the first time, we admire Bran's cleverness, and we say goodbye to Maester Luwin, Rickon, and Osha. Other topics include: wine, peeing too much, Babar the elephant, and the legality of working 9 days in a row. Character perspectives in this episode: Tyrion, Jon, and Bran... We will be back in a couple of weeks! Thanks so much for listening! This week, we: - Praise how masterfully George changes moods as this chapter goes along - Shiver as Jojen gets creepy with Bran's dreams - Zoom out to put the "little grandfather" in context with the other magical heralds of A Clash of Kings - Sift through both the short-term blind spots and long-term wisdom of Maester Luwin's worldview - Pity Bran for his bittersweet dreams of knighthood, tempting him onward to sorcery Next week: back to King's Landing for ACOK Tyrion VII as Lannister dysfunction somehow gets even worse. Brotherhood Without Manners - A Game of Thrones reread Podcast
Brotherhood Without Manners brings you another chapter reread. This time we are reading A Game of Thrones chapter 14 Catelyn 3. She has completely lost herself in her grief over Bran's crippling fall. Convinced she is going to lose her son we discuss her responsibilities that are being neglected. An assassin makes an attempt on Bran's life, but Cat, who was definitely not supposed to be there, defends him. We then discuss Catelyn's awakening and what this newfound clarity means for her going forward. Nate found a new favorite quote from Maester Luwin, and as always we give our chapter inductees into the Brotherhood Without Manners for this week. After several months of hiatus, Andrew and Manu are back and finally ready to wrap up season 1 of "Game of Thrones" by kicking off their discussion of the thrilling finale, "Fire and Blood." Despite the episode title, there are no Targaryens to discuss just yet. We pick up immediately where "Baelor" left off with Ned Stark's execution and Yoren's scramble to get the dazed Arya out of King's Landing. This segues to the theme of this week's podcast, which is essentially how each Stark family member (aside from Jon) reacts to Ned's death. We see Bran & Rickon learning the truth in visions before hearing the official word from Maester Luwin, Catelyn & Robb sharing in pure devastation in the Riverlands, and Sansa's quiet suffering at court in King's Landing before the shit Joffrey forces her to stare at Ned's head on a spike. (Immediately after needlessly having Marillion's tongue ripped out. Great guy.) It's at least a strong moment of personal strength from Sansa. It's good to be back and diving into all this, so enjoy! Listen to Manu's recent appearance discussing "The Queen's Justice" (season 7, episode 3) on The Night's Cast ... ... then go back and listen to our podcast on that episode from when it aired in August 2017! iTunes link Google Play link
The Nakedness is excessive! False bottoms will be discussed as we dive into Chapter 6 of George R. R. Martin's a Game of Thrones. "The Wolf and the Lion" continues as Andrew and Manu watch Bran grudgingly learn some lessons from Maester Luwin, Theon get taken down a peg by Ros, and the Tyrion/Catelyn crew fall under attack by the hill tribes of the Vale. Oh, and Bronn flashes some of his patented badassery for the first time. It doesn't suck! Come for the fight, stay for the Thrones/Star Wars crossover cameos.
